Richard and his team returned home (Lewa) on Monday after two weeks of the tough operation. The Lewa team in conjuction with Kenya Wildlife Services moved 30 black rhinos from Solio Ranch to Ol Pejeta conservancy. The conservancy is ideal for the black rhino because of its excellent terrain, shrubs, and well trained monitoring security.
The Lewa security team is on high alert not because of an eminent external aggression but to help the local neighboring communities tackle the human wildlife conflict. The harvesting season is on and this attracts numerous uninvited guests to the farms around Lewa. The baboons top the list. The security team has been deployed to prone areas to scare way these animals. The security team has also planned to treat an injured male giraffe. The injury (hind leg) might have been caused by a lion.

LOGISTICS
The recent rains saw unprecedented swelling of the Lewa swamp. This swelling has blocked the main access route to Ngare Ndare and Manyangalo (S.West of Lewa). This route will be usable soon, thanks to the plans by the logistic team to put up rocks and murram on the road.
With the ever increase in fire risks within and outside Lewa, the Logistic department has planned to build and equip a fire fighting equipment house to cater for such needs. The department is also facilitating the construction of security staff houses
(At Ngare Ndare Gate) and fixing water systems at different staff quarters.

LEWA EDUCATION TRUST - The trust has organized ball games for the Lewa sponsored schools. It has also organized visit by different donors to meet pupils in schools that they support. Tomorrow John Taft will be visiting Kariba School to see the implementation of the education programs that he is funding.

NORTHEN RANGELAND TRUST (NRT)
It’s a conservation initiative involving the local communities to champion environmental conservation in order to benefit from it.
The Lewa logistics department has been tasked by the NRT to construct staff houses for the for the Sera Conservancy staff (North of Lewa).

RESEARCH
With the harvest season on, and the grass and shrub soon drying, this will increase fire outbreaks. The research team has embarked on an effort to make fire breaks to prevent such fires from spreading to and from Lewa.
{Have a wonderful stay!}Lewa Diaryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17822452115435416475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29811337.post-64222735424200121022007-02-08T08:40:00.000+03:002007-02-22T17:58:04.702+03:00Diary 8 -10th Feb 2007

COMMUNITY

Lewa's mission is and will continue to be geared towards empowering the local communities to benefit from sustainable utilization of local resources.
