Cast Bronze Manta Ray: "Ocean Aviator"

As foreign as ocean life can appear to be, the manta ray belongs to that “weird and wonderful” group that seems fairly approachable. Alan’s work was continually inspired by this magnificent creature throughout his extensive research into its habits and habitat. The result is a manta ray gracefully gliding through a kelp bed unfettered by the dramas of a neighboring moray eel, octopus and unwitting school of fish.

The release of “Ocean Aviator” maquette precedes the installation of a monumental manta ray at a premier aquatics facility in Columbus, Ohio. The maquette, mounted on a black marble base, is an edition 50. The monumental manta ray will be an edition of 15.

The purpose and goal of the Iowa Sculpture Festival is to celebrate the development and growth of sculpture as an ultimate art form and to feature artists that create it.

In pursuit of this objective, the Iowa Sculpture Festival has established Maytag Park and Newton, Iowa as a center for sculpture through its annual festival and the community for year-round educational programming on sculpture.

This is the sixth annual festival and it continues to grow larger each year.

Harold Cooper was watching a Clippers baseball game yesterday afternoon in the stadium that bears his name when an unexpected ceremony wrested his attention away from the balls and strikes.
Franklin County Commissioners Marilyn Brown and Paula Brooks and City Auditor Hugh J. Dorrian helped Clippers General Manager Ken Schnacke surprise Cooper with news that a bronze statue of him will greet fans next season at the main entrance of the new Huntington Park in the Arena District.

The sculptor, Alan Hamwi of Upper Arlington, showed Cooper a miniature version of the statue.
"The title is The Father of Columbus Baseball," Schnacke said. "You really are the father of Columbus baseball."

Hamwi said Schnacke approached him two years ago with the project. Hamwi knew of Cooper but had never met him before yesterday. The pose is of a man obviously comfortable in his own skin.

"Heck, being raised in Columbus, I can remember coming to games here with the cowbells," Hamwi said. "I did a lot of research on him. They gave me some pictures. You could see how at ease he was with what he was doing."

Cooper began working for the Red Birds as a clubhouse boy in the 1930s. When the St. Louis Cardinals pulled the team from Columbus in 1954, he purchased the Ottawa franchise of the International League and moved that team to Columbus in 1955 as the Jets. That team left in 1970.

As a county commissioner, Cooper spearheaded the renovation of the current stadium and helped bring baseball back to the city in the form of the Clippers in 1977.
"I was involved with this stadium since I was a little kid," Cooper said. "My grandfather was foreman of the construction job, and I used to bring his lunch to him. That's where I got started."

Later, he fetched chewing tobacco and gum for players and ultimately become a general manager and the president of the International League.

"Anything that they wanted me to do I would do," Cooper said. "God, I just love baseball."

Spring Has Sprung and We're Cuttin' Loose

This beautiful cast bronze horse is aptly named as it seems to be taking off in every direction at once!

Affixed to a solid black marble base, "Cuttin Loose" would be a welcome addition to any art collection.

We’ll be heading to Florida the first weekend in April to show this and many other wonderful sculptures in the Siesta Fiesta Arts & Craft Festival the 5th and 6th.

Wrestling With Demons: Giant Octopus

" Wrestling With Demons" is a visual of aquatic adventure!
You can almost feel those probing tentacles wrapping around your leg. The movement and energy of this piece translates well in the photograph but does not do justice to the full impact of the work.
The detailed and textured body of the octopus displays a beautiful translucent patina contrasting with the unusual blue smoothness of the aqua warrior.
Similar yet very different sea creatures, both are gripped in a battle of wary confidence.

Bronze Sculpture: Bobcat - Wildlife

Announcing the release of Alan's latest sculpture, "On Edge." The life-size bobcat measures 36" from tail to paw and was originally commissioned for an installation in Scottsdale, Arizona. A limited edition of 35, the piece depicts the elusive and intelligent survivor. Life-size or maquette, "On Edge" is a very popular piece.

Bronze Sculpture: Bobcat

The life-size bobcat has been delivered to the foundry. Many thanks to the patrons who have purchased the first three in the series of 35.

Alan was very appreciative to learn that two K-9 house-pets have had serious issue with the piece and began barking and growling at it. A most discerning compliment if ever there was one!

The maquette version of the bobcat is also available.

Arizona Bobcat Commission

Work has begun on a life-size bobcat for an Arizona installation. The cast bronze piece will be included in the couple's creative southwest landscape and scenic desert view. On display at the Carefree Arts Festival, the clay bobcat maquette interested several patrons awaiting the finished bronze piece.

Bronze Sculpture: The Wildebeest "Leap of Faith"

I just returned from delivering a piece to Baer Bronze in Georgia to be cast as a donation for Partners in Conservation. The piece depicts two wildebeest jumping over a crocodile and is entitled "A Leap of Faith". As stated, the first of an edition of fifty is being donated to support an orphanage in Rwanda as well as veterinary care and rangers for the mountain gorillas of the Virunga mountain range. I shot a couple of photos in his atelier so you can see the work done with clay that ultimately produces a unique mold to obtain the final product: a real size bronze sculpture of a siberian tiger.
