Planet Earth Poetry celebrates May Day, and ends it's season.

May 1, 2009 JACOB SCHEIER

JACOB SCHEIER, winner of the Governor General's Award for Poetry in 2008, reads from More to keep us warm.

Robert Priest says of his work: "From sickness, grief, and injury Jacob Scheier forges witty, eloquent poetry, fresh and new, but finely attuned to the classic traditions of spiritual inquiry. A strong and necessary new voice in Canadian Literature."

We begin the 2009-20010 season on September 18, 2009, with favourite poem night and a raffle and fundraiser for Doctors without Borders.

APRIL 3, 2009: LIZ ZETLIN

LIZ ZETLIN, visual artist, filmaker, award winning poet, Poet Laureate of Owen Sound, plants garlic to form words, inscribes words on ornamental gourds, grows punctuation marks in hay fields. Her latest book is Addictions of a Poet Laureate.

APRIL 10, 2009: YVONNE BLOMER & BRIAN BARTLETT

YVONNE BLOMER, award winning poet, traveller, cyclist, mother, daydreamer, memoir teacher, reads new poems. Her latest book, a broken mirror, fallen leaf.

BRIAN BARTLETT, creative writing teacher at St. Mary's University in Halifax, winner of the Atlantic Poetry Prize, has 5 collections of poetry, the latest is The Watchmaker's Table.

This is a fundraiser for the League of Canadian Poets. Great prizes.

APRIL 17, 2009: SHAYNE KOYCZAN

Winner of the US Slam Poetry Championship and Canadian Spoken Work Olympics, Shane Koyczan's performances--thrilling, rich fast and cool, have brought audiences to their feet in New York, London, Edinburgh, Sydney, Auckland and Los Angeles. He now brings this great talent to Victoria. He has two books of poetry from House of Parlance, Visiting Hours and Stick Boy.

APRIL 24, 2009: SUSAN STENSON

SUSAN STENSON, teacher at Claremont, editor of the Claremont Review, poetry enthusiast and prize winner, has two books of poetry, her latest is My Mother Agrees with the Dead. She will read from her lastest manuscript, Abstractions in Alphabetical Order to be published by So No Nis.

March 6, 2009: JESSICA MICHALOFSKY

Jessica Michalofsky lives and works in Victoria BC where she is regular reader at the Planet Earth Reading Series. A parent, teacher, and poet, she juggles the merits of anguish and delight with equal attention, exploring the psychological power of metaphor and carrying on the lyric tradition of the Romantic poets. She is published in Horsefly, The Point, and Event, but her wider claim to fame might be seeing the Pope in Penetanguishene Ontario when she was 13.

We are also celebrating International Women's Day.

March 13, 2009: ISA MILMAN & DAVID CAVANAUGH

Award winning Victoria poet, Isa Milman, reads from her second book of poetry, Prairie Kaddish, from Coteau, which tells the story of the survival of the Jewish immigrants to Saskatchewan at the end of the 19th century.

David Cavanaugh, Canadian poet and Burlington Vermont resident, teacher, and great Victoria fan, reads from his second book of poetry, Falling Body , from Salmon Books, in Ireland.

March 20, 2009: RANDALL MAGGS & BRENDA LEIFSO

Newfoundland poet, Randall Maggs, reads from Night Work: The Sawchuk Poems, from Brick Books. This book, complete with photographs, are poems written on the tormented goalie, Terry Sawchuk. He poured over countless magazine stories and articles, talked to hockey players and coaches who knew Sawchuk and watched him in action, capturing Sawchuk in his poems.

Brenda Leifso, reads from her first book of poetry, Daughters of Men, from Brick Books. She explores the secrets of a rural Alberta childhood with great honesty and exquisite language. She was the executive director of Prism International.

March 27, 2009: JAN ZWICKY & ROBERT BRINGHURST

Jan Zwicky is a philosopher, poet, essayist and violinist. She was winner of the Governor General's award for poetry in 1999 for Songs for Relinquishing the Earth. In 2004, she won the Dorothy Livesay Poetry prize, for Robinson's Crossing and was shortlisted for the Governor General's award twice, for her poetry and for her non-fiction.

Robert Bringhurst is one of Canada's most probing cultural historians and poets. He was shortlisted for the Griffin Poetry Prize for Poetry with Nine Visits to the Mythworld translated from Haida. His book, Everywhere Being is Dancing: Twenty Pieces of Thinking contemplate the connections between poetry, language, nature and philosophy.

FEBRUARY 6, 2009: PATRICK LANE

Considered to be the greatest poet of his generation and one of the finest non-fiction writers; and now, novelist for Red Dog, Red Dog, reads poetry from his many collections.

FEBRUARY 13, 2009: SHERI-D. WILSON

One of the world's great performance poets, gives poetry a new meaning when she's on the stage.

FEBRUARY 20, 2009: MONTE REID & DVORA LEVIN

MONTE REID, this award winning poet reads from The Luskerville Reductions, recording a year in the life of a small Quebec town and the marriage that disintegrates there.

DVORA LEVIN, launches her chapbook, Bite the Blue Apple, her healing poems, and Sharav. Poet Susan Stenson says, "these poems summon the silence after prayer, hopeful and still." She will be accompanied with lovely music.

SUSAN GILLIS, Montreal poet, is the author of Swimming among the Ruins. Her second book Volta won the A.M. Kline Prize for Poetry. She is presently working on a collection of poems concerning buildings and rivers.

JANUARY 23, 2009: LORNA CROZIER

Over a career spanning three decades, Lorna Crozier has become one of Canada's most beloved poets, receiving the Governor General's Award, the Pat Lawther Poetry Award and many others. She has published fourteen books of poetry, her latest, The Blue Hour of the Day, from McClelland & Stewart draws on her eight major collections. She has been awarded the Distinguished Professor Award, from the University of Victoria, where she has been chair of the Creative Writing department.

JANUARY 30, 2009: MATT RADER, PETER LEVITT & SHIRLEY GRAHAM

MATT RADER studied writing at the University of Victoria. He is the editor of Mosquito Press, and a Graduate Teaching Fellow at the University of Oregon. His second book, from Nightwood Editions, Living Things, was written in the year after the birth of his daughter.

PETER LEVITT has 9 books of poetry, is a translator, teacher in the UBC Creative Writing Optional Residency MFA Program. His latest book is Within, Within, from Black Moss Press.

SHIRLEY GRAHAM lives on Salt Spring Island with her husband, Peter Levitt. Her latest book, What Someone Wanted, was published by Black Moss Press.
