We worked in acrylics, oils, graphite, charcoal and conte. They learned Art presentation, Art journaling and Art Marketing!

Still lifes, landscapes and portraits, all in the traditional mode helped expand their vision and stretch a bit more from them. We also taled about what to look for when selecting an art schoo for college-a very necessary topic to save tens of thousands of dollars for the parents!

Next camp is July 6-10 and the final is August 3-7. Held just off the Blue Ridge Parkwayin the NC mountains, it is wonderfully cooler than the Piedmont. There is something in everyone's DNA where some ancient connection to mountains manifests itself. A portrait should virtually breathe on it's own!
This 24 x 30 oil is a good example of that concept. By intertwining the likenesses of the subject with a visual example of their long term relationship and devotion to each other the portrait took on a life of it's own.

In other words, it went far beyond "looking like the subject" or what a photo is required to do. A fine art portrait creates a perpetual record of a subject on that day, in time and the interaction to the environment around them. A moment in time. A forever reminder that life is good!
Come into My Art Studio and visit! Odd, huh? You would think that an artist would paint pretty much anything and in one respect, I do. But my artistic heart is on subjects...people and animals especially. Or a tree. Now THAT I can get a grasp on-a big, impressive or gnarled subject! But a landscape? No. To look at a beautiful landscape has always held a wonder for me. The oceans, the the pastoral farm settings, a pasture with cows, the mountains of the Blue Ridge. But to paint those scenes? Actually.....no. Sometimes I look at all the green in all its variations and think "No, I don't wish to paint each leaf." But of course I miss the point don't I? In memory, one remembers with a softness, not with clarity and that is probably why the Impressionist movement has such a following. I am quite fond of my husband's work as he loves his landscapes and perhaps has the essence of what I just said-light, color and generalities to combine into a beautiful coherent scene. But having said all that, maybe, just maybe, after wandering through my yard yesterday and looking at the once a year amazing burst of colors from the wold and heirloom roses that surround the house, studio and pastures, I might be persuaded to pick up a brush and boldly go where I usually don't go! Into a landscape!
Come into My Art Studio and visit! You would give anything to make a living at something you love! Did they laugh?

Did they tell you stories about starving artists and wealthy dead artists? Maybe they told you that you weren't good enough? Or did they tell you that artists can't run a business?

Now, we're not sure who decided that artists could not sell. That is a new concept as artists have sold their art and crafts throughout history!

We're not sure why the Art Communities in general came up with the idea that artists "should" not have to market their art.

We're not sure when the phrase "starving artist" was first used. But the damage was done long enough ago that it has become a standard assumption that ALL artists are starving!.........

Doesn't that ring a bell? Today is the final Paintings, the wall displays are in. Let's see, a few pillows, the portable coffee, the pastels, the easels, the clothes.....a lo-o-o-ong list!

At this art festival we are renting the tents and tables. Far more cost effective than hauling two Craft Huts and their weights across the country. I am finalyzing one pastel and hope to ship later today. Shipped the large pastel on the right on Tuesday to its new owner in FL. There is always SO much to get ready! Lists are critical.

5 dogs are getting worried. They know something is up and they' re not happy but no one is coming on this trip! We aren't pulling the camper this time and I know as we get closer to the desert regions, it will get warmer. There is nothing worse than traveling with a pet in hot weather!

Then again, I have to keep reminding myself that it WILL be hot. Just as heading down to Florida last month from a snowey NC (and returning to one!) presented a mindset challenge (it was hard NOT to pack a coat) so will our trip across the country.

I guess we are really www.OnRoadArtists.com!

Come into My Art Studio and visit! Their joy of life and their home in the country pours into their everyday attitude and being! Although their 30 x 40 oil is not quite done,I have had the family live with their portrait for a few weeks to get a feel for the overall impact. So just a few tweaks to do here and there and this beautiful moment in time is theirs forever!
Originally I photographed the boys and their huge Newfoundland and mellow Golden Retriever (and Siamese) in the late fall.
I created a more springtime look to the portrait and although everything is pulled together to create one cohesive look, the viewer can't tell that I used many reference photos!

But in this scene it is all about the exuberance of childhood! The rough and tumble relationships between brothers. The family pets involved with their young masters. And the growing up with an emphasis on being outside in all weather. I love zooming in on the subjects and although it means the portraiture must be very accurate when working almost lifesize, I find it actually easier to work larger.
The Jones family was delighted with my portrait of their two daughters, Lacey and Morgan and of course they loved Jack, their lovable Westie.
Although the garden was not in bloom, I recreated my rendition, groomed Jack, changed faces, hairstyles, perspective and a number of small areas to finalize my composition.
I met the family in October, took the photos early in November and completed this pastel right before Christmas! An heirloom for generations!
Come into My Art Studio and visit! Built in the 1930's with young men from FDR's programs, I often marvel at how little has changed on the Parkway. It is like a time capsule. Year after year we, along with thousands of Americans, stop at the overlooks and marvel at the views. For over 70 years, travelers have stopped where we have stopped, looked at what we look at, and continued their journeys down through time. I think of the Blue Ridge Parkway like an Alma Mater, a college campus where ghosts of one's past pop up here and there!
