This Monday night, July 13th the Lake George Steamboat Company's MOHICAN cruise boat will play host to a cast of characters never before seen plying the 32-mile long Lake George in the Adirondack Mountains. The Last of the Mohicans Outdoor Drama production company has had the good fortune to have Chronicle Newspaper owner, Mark Frost decide he wanted to sponsor a fundraising benefit cruise for the non-profit outdoor drama production company. The cruise, which begins boarding at 7 PM for a two-hour cruise will feature several historically dressed actors and a bevvy of living history reenactor "extras" who will perform a couple of selected short vignettes during the cruise on Lake George. The evening will include time for "meet and greet" of the cast and reenactors as well as several musket volley's over the crystal clear waters of Lake George which formed the inspiration and backdrop for James Fenimore Cooper's timeless novel. Cost for tickets are $20 /Adult, $11 Children-12 years old and younger. There may be tickets available at the gangway at 7 PM if supplies allow.

The Last of the Mohicans Outdoor Drama is in the process of raising funds to begin full summer productions with an eye on 2010 to host several weekends filled with special effects and the full play adaptation written by Michael Dufault and actor from NYC who moved to the Lake George Region 6 years ago with the concept. Outdoor Drama's are very popular tourism attractions across the country. The Institute of Outdoor Drama, housed at the University of North Carolina has assisted the group with strategic planning and noted that given the history of the region, its majestic mountain backdrop, the presence of the lake and known tourism destination--the Last of the Mohicans Outdoor Drama stands to quickly become on of the most well known and attended outdoor dramas of its kind. They estimate Millions of dollars of economic impact will be netted once the full production with its unique outdoor performance area is built.

In the meantime, the non profit, Last of the Mohicans Outdoor Drama continues to build its support and reputation for providing unique, historically based family entertainment. In August, the weeknd of August 15-16 the troupe will stage "SIGHTS, SOUNDS AND SCENES FROM THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS OUTDOOR DRAMA in Shepard Park on the shore of Lake George. Saturday evening's performance is at 7 PM, Sunday is a matinee at 1 PM. Both shows will include historically dressed cast, living history reenactment units, artillery cannon fire and may even include live horses during part of a scene. The event is free, but a goodwill donation will be greatly appreciated.

So act quickly if you would like to purchase a ticket to go on the Monday, July 13th Benefit Cruise for The Last of the Mohicans Outdoor Drama. The weather was perfect and the scenery breathless. The Sagamore, under new ownership has been undergoing major renovations and upgrades to its majestic historic hotel since last winter. Still to go are finishing their new outdoor pool which is perfectly terraced with the backdrop of one of the most captivating and far reaching view of the 32-mile long Lake George. I can just envision the neatly set rows of ADK chairs and lounges overlooking the view.

Over 120 guests of the chamber, made up of leading movers and shakers in business, the tourism industry and officials networked, mingled and filled the evening out on the enlarged terrace which commands the highpoint of the sweeping lawn overlooking the lake with a 180 degree panorama of the Queen of the American Lakes-Lake George.

Many thanks to the staff and management of the Sagamore for making the evening a huge success. The staff gave tours of their new Caldwell Lobby Bar, The Sagamore Dining Room, both with open air decks for outdoor wining and dining. We were also treated to tours of their new wing of beautiful guest accomodations and a roof top terrace that any bride could only envision in a dream as the "perfect picture spot" for her wedding party.

Thank you again Sagamore, for being a supportive member of the Lake George Regional Chamber of Commerce & CVB and for being such wonderful hosts this week! Well...we can not promise you will be able to do all of that but if you visit Lake George, NY this weekend you WILL be able to see THE LARGEST DRESS FIREFIGHTERS PARADE being hosted in New York State this year! Over 135 fire department units will line up to parade through the Village of Lake George culminating at the foot of Lake George in the former Gaslight Village area. The event is the Hudson Valley Volunteer Firefighters Association annual convention. On tap throughout the weekend are special events for both convention attendees and the public. Two parades are planned for the weekend. The first one, their "Mardi Gras Parade" steps off at 7 PM on Friday night. The second, with its claim to fame as the largest held in NYS this year steps off on Saturday at the north end of the Village at Noon and is expected to run for several hours. Canada Street leading into the village will be closed for aproximately 3-4 hours to drive-thru traffic.

BEST BET: Use RT 87/The Northway, Exit 21. Left onto RT 9 heading north. Parking is most easily accessed by taking a right onto RT 9L, to intersection of 9L and Beach Rd. Take Left onto Beach Rd. and park in the Million Dollar Beach (DEC) parking lots. Walk west on Beach Road into the Village. Another suggestion is to use RT 9 Northbound, to Left on Mohican Street (Lobster Pot Restaurant on corner) to stop sign, take Right on Dieskau St., go a few blocks to see public parking lot on left. Often if you are willing to walk a block or two off the main drag you can easily find parking! The parade will be worth it for any Firefighter affectionato!

LARAC Arts and Crafts Festival in Glens Falls

LARAC Arts and Crafts Festival this weekend in City Park in historic downtown Glens Falls. Decades ago, before the major interstate highway system was installed, Route 9 served as the major artery connecting New York City to Montreal. Families who shared ties in both locations used Route 9 as their primary travel route. Route 9 goes right through the heart of Lake George Village and stands even today as a perfect mid-way point on the travel route. For decades, weary travelers would stop in Lake George or use this destination mecca as the mid-way meeting point to reconnect with family and friends and enjoy a vacation together. Canada Street, Lake George's main artery is reminiscent of those times and still provides a fantastic array of restaurants, hotels and motels, lakeside attractions and shops.

Do you have some stories about traveling from NYC to Montreal? Please share them with us on our blog!

To welcome visitors from Canada, the Lake George Regional Chamber of Commerce initiated several special programs in recent years. Their Canadian Friendship Week centers around the Victoria Day long weekend which preceeds the American's Memorial Day weekend. The week features special entertainers and welcome characters like Georgie and Jacque--chamber mascots who greet visitors in the village. During Canadian Friendship Week, local businesses dress out their Canadian Flags, staffers wear Canadian/USA flag pins, and marquee signs on Canada Street businesses welcome their Northern friends. The special programs continue with the annual issuance of a Canadian Bienvenue Discount Card which is provided free-for-the-asking to any Canadian resident. The Lake George Regional Chamber and CVB provide this exclusive program which currently offers over 30 businesses who provide discounts when the card is shown. Discounts range from special rates at hotels to BOGO offers at local shops. If you are a Canadian resident there are several ways to get your own personal discount card. You can request one from the chamber's website at http://www.lakegeorgechamber.com/ or email directly to Bienvenue@lakegeorgechamber.com . The card will come with a complete up to date listing of discount offers.

There is plenty of reasons to visit Canada Street in Lake George Village....our red carpets are out to all visitors...but during May...its the "red and white carpet" that is out to remember and commemorate why Canada Street...is called "Canada Street"!

Adirondack Winery in Lake George, NY-1st year anniversary!

On April 17th, 2008, Adirondack Winery & Tasting Room opened its doors to the public for the very first time. The snow is still plentiful, and it was -5 degrees this morning when I left Bolton Landing headed for work in Lake George today!! What a GREAT TIME FOR CHILI!!
Bands N' Beans is a fun-loving event held annually by The Lake George Arts Project as one of their major fundraising events. Proceeds go to support the many free concerts the LGAP host during the summer months in Shepard's Park. Having attended several years of this event I will tell you that no where can you sample such a fantastic array of homemade chili's from literally dozens of restaurants, caterers and private chefs. The concept is great...purchase a ticket to get in and then go from table to table (and back as many times as your belt notches will allow) and fill up on chili ranging from Venison Chili (Yup, one of the outdoor sportsman's clubs hosts that booth) to Vegetarian Chili's. But not to be missed are the live bands that play throughout the entire event! Reggae, Blues, Rock n roll, its all here... so come on...shake off your cold winter chills and get with some chili...bands and beans! Their ability to thrive in a not-so-easy area (both economically and environmentally) should be commended. This past week in Lake George village, on New Years Day was proof of this tenacity. Hundreds of brave souls took a dip in freezing Lake George when temperatures struggled to try to get above 10 degrees! (it was - 5 at my house in the morning). Kudos to all who participated (many from near and far away places) to do this great winter homage!

Driving from Bolton Landing to Lake George this weekend my husband and I did see that the bays along the west side of the lake are showing ice...hopefully this trend will continue so that the Winter Carnival Committee can have all their great special events on the ice during the weekends in February. (More about winter carnival in future blog updates).

Snowmobiliers and skiiers have been very happy these past few weeks in the North Country. Skiing at West Mountain and Gore are in full speed ahead mode and only less than 28 minutes either direction from Lake George. DEC opened up the road to the summit of Prospect Mountain just opposite our chamber office on RT 9 in Lake George and i did see several snow mobilers making the pilgrimage. It's an awesome view from the top of the mountain and the several overlook sites. Also handy is the Stewarts Gas Station and Super 8 Motel that are at the base of the driveway (Super 8 even has snowmobile parking areas). Makes gas-ing up and overnighting really easy for snow mobile lovers. Speaking of Gas prices...it sure is nice to see $1.66 per gallon again!

Watch for updated news on the 09 Elvis Festival, Winter Carnival and more being posted soon! Let me know if there are topics you would like to see covered in our chamber blog. We would love to hear from you anytime!

North Country Holiday Bed and Breakfast Tour, Lake George Region, NY

The Lake George Regional Chamber is announcing the last chance to peak inside 15 Adirondack Bed & Breakfasts in the Lake George Region of Upstate NY during special tours this weekend. This weekend, Dec 6 & 7, fifteen Bed & Breakfast Innkeepers have decorated their inns in holiday finery, will put out goodies and refreshments and await your visit to tour their lovely properties. The event, being sponsored by the Lake George Regional Chamber of Commerce features North Country B & B's including Victorian Gingerbreads, historic farmhouses and secluded Log Cabins. Tickets have been on sale for a month, but there is still time to take yourself (and perhaps a good friend or "best friend") on a fun filled weekend self-guided tour! Tickets are available for sale at the chamber office from 9 AM-10:30 AM on Saturday, Dec 6th only (cash or check). However, each participating Bed & Breakfast also has tickets available at their door. Tickets are $25 per person, $20 for Seniors/Students. Tickets are required to tour each of the 15 properties. Ticket holders may visit over the two days of the tour. Tour hours are; Saturday, Dec. 6th from 11 AM to 7 PM and Sunday, Dec. 7th from 11 AM to 4 PM. A portion of the ticket proceeds will benefit local Habitat for Humanities Programs. The tour is a wonderful way to get decorating ideas, restoration and holiday decorating ideas and to see inside some of Washington, Warren and Saratoga Counties most beautiful Bed & Breakfasts! Check out the event website at: www.lakegeorgechamber.com/bbtour for more details and a complete listing of the properties on tour. Once again, its not too late to go on the tour--just make a trip to the closest B & B on the tour and purchase your ticket. You will be given complete information and driving directions to all the inns on tour by a gracious innkeeper. The best part is...if you visit at least 9 of the 15 inns on tour this weekend you will be able to register to win a FREE weekend get-away at one of the inns of your choice! Of course, our beautiful scenery never stops either-majestic mountains, scenic lakeside overlooks, meandering hiking trails...roaring fireplaces in restaurants! There are activities and unique things to keep you busy...if you want to be! This coming weekend in the heart of Glens Falls (if you have not seen or experienced their renaissance you need to!) there is the Wine & Chocolate Festival on Friday, Nov. 14th held at the Queensbury Hotel. Meet Me in St. Louis a play put on by the Glens Falls Community Theater continues its run this weekend and there is an Exhibition Reception of Prints by Kristine Croso Tolmie at the Courthouse Gallery of the Lake George Arts Project from 4-6 OM on Saturday, Nov 15th.

For more information on these and a myriad of other cultural, sporting and historical events happening this weekend (or any week for that matter) please check out our online calendar at:

www.lakegeorgechamber.com/chamber_events.asp or call our friendly and knowledgeable staff at 518-668-5755--they have the details and also can offer lodging and restaurant info for the region.

It is true we get a little bit sleepier up here in the North Country during non-summer months, some seasonal only businesses are closed, others limit their hours, but for many people that is the best time to enjoy our natural setting, unwind and enjoy what locals know are the real fruits of living in such a beautiful area. Fifteen (15) area bed and breakfasts will be completely decked out in their holiday finery and open their doors to ticket holders to tour their inns. From rustic Adirondack Log "Castles" to quintessential Victorian Gingerbreads and Historic Farmhouses, tour visitors will get a chance to see the many varied and unique lodging experiences available in "The North Country" of the Lake George Region. The tour is self-guided with the chamber providing a brochure guide of each property with directions and sample driving itineraries.

Tickets will go on sale through the chamber's office beginning next week. Advance ticket purchases are required. Tickets are $25 per person, $20 for Seniors/Students. The tour will be held regardless of weather. Tour hours will run: Saturday, 11-5 (with some inns open till 7 PM) and Sunday, 11-4. The B & B's on the tour do have limited rooms available for weekend stays at this time. In addition, you can find a myriad of lodging at nearby hotels and motels by visiting the chamber's website at http://www.lakegeorgechamber.com/ This two-day outing is perfect for a girlfriend getaway or for couples to see what romantic or rustic retreat they wish to visit for a future stay!

The Lake George Regional Chamber will be hosting special pages on their website which will show a photo and have a weblink to each of the 15 Bed & Breakfasts on the tour. The tour is self-guided, so ticket holders can go at their own pace and tour the countryside, perhaps stopping off for lunch along the way. The chamber expects the website to be active also beginning next week and will continually add new information and features as the months progress leading up to the tour on the first weekend in December. Support for this event is being provided by the Warren County Tourism Dept.'s Occupancy Tax Event Fund.

Watch for our announcement that the

North Country Holiday Bed & Breakfast Tour

Webpages are active!

EMAIL ME TODAY at Director@lakegeorgechamber.com

if you would like a tour flyer sent to you!

Flyer features a photo of each property, tour and weblink information.

A portion of the ticket sales will be donated by the chamber to benefit Habitat for Humanity.

Lake George Jazz at the Lake--this weekend

Lake George, NY will really be "warming up" this weekend for the 25th Annual Jazz at the Lake, Lake George Jazz Weekend hosted by the Lake George Arts Project. What does this mean? It means that for the modest price of $17.57 dining customers can relish in a 3-course meal at any one of 15 participating restaurants in the area. A sampling of the types of offerings include; Lobster, Prime Rib, Chicken or Shrimp Alfredo's, fantastic Italian and Mexican dishes, Roast Duck, Grilled Salmon and a myriad of other culinary delights. But that's not the half of it!! Each 3-course meal comes with your choice of an appetizer and a dessert.

The hardest part of Restaurant Week is trying to select which ones to try! Since there are 15 to choose from we have tried to help by showing their specialty menus on our website. This way you can see what great varieties are being offered and perhaps try a restaurant you have wanted to get to but never got the chance. Here is a perfect way to try a new eating establishment for a very affordable price. Check out the details including restaurant websites for hours, days of operation and their special menus for the week at: www.LakeGeorgeChamber.com and click on the Restaurant Week icon on the left margin.

Why $17.57? In the year 1757, the British Army controlled Lake George and were garrisoned at Fort William Henry on its southern shore. The French Army moved along the western side of the lake from Montreal and laid siege to the fort. The British were forced to surrender. It is considered one of the high points in the French & Indian War. So much so that centuries later, James Fenimore Cooper wrote a fictional tale using the siege as the basis for his novel, The Last of the Mohicans. The Lake George Area is so rich in history from both the French & Indian War era and the Revolutionary War. Last year there was a major living history reenactment to commemorate the 1757 siege.

ADK Nationals Car Show this Weekend!

For anyone who jittered in the 40's, be-bopped in the 50's and survived the 60's there is something for you to see this weekend as the 20th Anniversary of the ADK Nationals Car Show rolls into Lake George! The Racetrack at Saratoga is open and just 25 minutes from the shores of Lake George. This weekend is the famous "Travers Weekend" and so the entire region will be hopping. The weather forecast is looking grand with near mid to high 80's and sunny--thank goodness! We have had our share of cooler than normal temps this summer and a bit more rainfall than most of us would like....however that has all translated out to some of the most beautiful flower beds and plantings in LG Village and at various hotel/motel locations. It also means that we are --believe it or not---starting into what could be a fantastic fall foliage season. Yes, thats right, some of our Maple trees are already starting to show just a peak or two of red leaves. A native "Bolton fella" that i know said that with the combination of moisture and the cool nights we have had (43 degrees when i left for work this morning) our fall will most likely come early and be beautiful!

But back to summer cause we still have a lot of unfinished vaca-mode left in all of us. Around our entire region there are some great things happening from blue grass concerts to boat shows. Don't forget our chamber will also be hosting the 2nd annual LAKE GEORGE AREA RESTAURANT WEEK which runs from Sept. 8-13th and features 15 restaurants offering special 3-course meals for $17.57. the list of restaurants and more info is available now off our home page. More on restaurant week in an upcoming blog entry. We list them all on our events page on our website so check that out. Once school does go back in session our September line up of happenings also gets into high gear again. September and October in the ADK's is in my impression one of the best times of year. There are many festivals, historic sites...and of course those leaves to see and experience. What a time to hike Tongue Mountain!

Family Summer Festival on this Weekend in LG!

Shepard Park on the shores of Lake George is full of craft vendors, artists, activities for all ages as well as some great music and entertainers planned for this entire weekend. The weather is supposed to be quite good on Saturday and spectacular on Sunday. From the looks of the park as i drove into the chamber to work this morning the craft tents set up were filling the park, the flowers along Canada Street and Beach Road are beautiful and everyone was really soaking up the beautiful sunshine. So its a great weekend to come to Lake George! Remember that our chamber office located at 2176 State RT 9 ( just south of the village itself) has many discount coupons, event listing handouts, guides, and discount tickets to major area attractions. Please stop in and say hello and let them know you read our blog!!

Georgie our beloved Lake George "Lake Monster" (and chamber mascot) was out carousing around the village yesterday afternoon. This year, since the 4th hits on a Friday there is no doubt that revelers will really come out in droves. That's good for business and a great way to show patriotism at its best. Our chamber posts a complete listing of all the various fireworks shows throughout the region on our website online events calendar. Its worth a few minutes to check that out. Whether you want to view fireworks from a ball field, an amusement park or along the shores of Lake George itself---there are many venues to take your family and friends and enjoy the evening.

If you are gushing over the fact that gas prices are creating a dent in your vacation plans there are lots of ways to save some bucks on gas and use it towards things that are much more appealing like mementoes, a savory meal, a hole in one at mini-golf, or a ticket to a local attraction or family amusement park.

Some money saving tips for your visit to Lake George, NY

(1) Visit http://www.lakegeorgechamber.com/ and print out money saving coupons to area restaurants, attractions and shops.
(2) stop by the chamber office and pick up a schedule for the North and South Trolley routes. The trolleys run constantly between Bolton Landing to Lake George and Lake George to Glens Falls and for $1 per person (either north or south routes)-- (5 year olds and under ride free) it can save you gas and parking fees. This year i had the pleasure of meeting a woman who was purchasing a whole lot of yummy goodies at the Perfect Blend Cafe in Maynard Square on Canada Street--she was from the UK. One word out of her mouth confirmed it...what a lovely accent! In any case, she explained to me and the owner of the cafe, Adele that she and her husband ship their bikes here and have been coming over for the past 6 years. This was her 7th Americade and she loves it! Last year I met a lovely gentleman from Israel.

While working at the Lake George Rotary booth at the Holiday Inn on Monday and Tuesday of Americade week as a volunteer I had the pleasure of meeting people from Wisconsin, California, Texas, Connecticut, lots of folks from New Jersey (my home state-have to give that a plug) , tons of folks from Canada (they are so glad their money is worth more here now) and of course a great throng of New York folks who just love the fact that they have this beautiful region to call their own playground in the mountains.

By all accounts the event was another great year! My friends from New Jersey who have been coming for the past 6+ years and stay at the Twin Pines on Trout Lake in Diamond Point had a marvelous time once again. They spent a good part of the time in LGV, at the Americade Trade Show and then did day outings to Lake Placid and touring our beautiful mountain countrysides.

Economically, according to a SUNY Plattsburg study conducted last year, Americade Tour Rally is responsible for a $46 million dollar economic impact to our region. Some businesses in the area would not exist...or at minimum could not sustain through a rainy summer without having Americade as the lead position of opening season in the Adirondacks. Is there a downside? yes, for one week we listen to motorcycles, we stand in line at a restaurant or at a gas station ( they only take a few gallons of the precious stuff to fill their bikes), it takes a bit longer to get out of your driveway or parking lot (which as one savvy business person told me just "ka-chings" money in her mind) and the upside...besides great for business? we learn that there is a lot to be said about aging gracefully, with great spirit and the wind in your hair---many Americade participants are well into their 60's, 70's and 80's and enjoying the ride more now than when they were 20!

We would love to hear your comments about Americade!

Aloha from Elvis on Shores of Lake George, NY!

The Lake George Elvis Festival is kicking (or should I say 'rockin' ) into high gear. From what I understand...what we had was a "typical old fashioned winter here"...and lingering snow is part of that mix. However, it still amazes me that we can have 8 days of mid -60-70 degree weather and still have snow ladden forests and streambed rocks. It is beautiful!

Just the same, our mid-70's degree sunny weather has foisted us into some great opening days to the season. Last week, while enjoying a lunch out on the sunny deck of JC Montana's restaurant on Canada Street my friend and I could not help but notice the literal "throngs" of people. The restaurants that were open had small waiting lines to get a seat outdoors!! Bless those outside cafe's started last year--now business owners have to scramble to get them re-installed. Kinda seems silly to have to take them down in the first place but that was the Village rule. In any case, Kudo's to those businesses who in a flurry opened their doors, put on their smiles--greeted the visitors and fired up their cash registers!! Reports have it from one business on Canada Street that business on Saturday was amazingly close to volume of a typical Americade day. Now that IS SAYING SOMETHING!

When a Channel 8 news reported stopped in my office to do a story on the rising gas prices and how they were going to affect tourism, I said---now IS THE TIME, but here is NOT THE PLACE, "lets go down to the lakeside and enjoy the sun, the water and of course--this one in a million view!" So off we went and enjoyed ourselves while doing business. Any excuse I can get (or for that matter our hundreds of thousands of annual visitors can get) to come away and escape to "THE LAKE" is a good enough reason for me. I still have to pinch myself that I have been so fortunate to live right here in this majestic place.

Some may say that late spring is still not the time for a visit to LG. I beg to differ. While its true that not all the businesses are open--many are, at least on the weekends. But the clear sky, the little bit of crispness in the air and the warm sun are a magical recipe. Putting in a canoe or kayak can yield the paddler and up close and intimate rendezvous with a Loon and his family or the awesome sight of a bald eagle or deer who have come to feed on remote lakeshores. If you are into white water rafting---there is NO BETTER TIME than now! There is plenty to see and do and places to stay. The area is waking up and we are loving the folks who have already come to visit and get a jump on summer!

Please let me know if there are topics of interest that you would like to see covered in my blog about the Lake George Region. I would be happy to oblige if possible!

Next week.....info about Americade and Elvis!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lakegeorgenychamber.blogspot.com/2008/04/wow-this-weather-gets-visitors-coming.html' title='WOW.. Sitting at the head of Dunham's Bay the view is simply breathtaking (and sure is good to see NO signs of ice!) and we could not help but feel that spring and the new summer season is around the corner. We had a very nice turn out of members and it was especially great to have three of our newest member businesses on hand; Adirondack Winery, Paychex, Inc-K. Delsignore and Ballooning Adventures! Our chamber mixers are a great way for members, prospective members and new members to meet, greet and network. I saw some great cross-marketing talk going on between retailers and hoteliers, accommodations and restaurant owners. That type of event is what a chamber is all about. Thanks again Rex Moon (Marketing Director) and Mark Childs (General Manager & Executive Chef) from Dunham's Bay Resort for making this event such a great one!

Hey...there are people out there!!

It is always great to know that somewhere, at some point in a busy day...someone has had a chance to visit our blog. It makes the time spent feel worthwhile for sure. Well, Lake George is coming alive slow but sure. In Bolton Landing there are still places with two feet of snow (like my backyard!) but in LG Village signs of spring are happening. The shop keepers are starting to restock, spiff up storefronts and the village crews are starting their rounds. I even saw some crocus blooming in Queensbury yesterday! We have several new stores that have opened over the late winter and a few more soon to open in spring.

You simply have to check out the new bakery on the side street going to the Mini-Chopper food store. Old fashioned bakery feel with simply luscious things to eat! Also new and soon to open will be Adirondack Winery on Canada Street. They are up in the new building opposite Shepard Park. The decisions they make affect every segment of our business climate and the quality of life for area residents. At a recent meeting I attended (I try to attend as many as my schedule will permit) one topic of hot discussion was the continued funding and support for the expansion of the "tourist rail" lines that could eventually link the North Creek Station to Saratoga. The County is already in for a considerable amount of funds as well as a signer on a grant that would infuse more dollars. The question appears to lie on just how much more will need to be spent and should additional funds be allocated and sought to build "real stations" at strategic points or would simple platforms suffice.

What a blissful marriage this historic tourist rail program would be! Saratoga is already an easy destination for NYC dwellers who do not own cars but can easily get to Saratoga via rail. Having that additional amenity of a rail connection to North Creek could enhance not only the viability of this quintessential North Country village year round--but also provide viable reasons for economic development and tourism promotion to the small towns and villages that dot the tracks along the way. Towns like Thurman, Stony Creek and even Lake Luzerne (though over the river) can and would all benefit from this added rail link with creative and progressive thinking and their own communities support. There are special interest hobbiests and clubs who seek out historic rail excursions, and non-profit groups have already seen some great results from hosting events on the train. I can envision full schedules of fall foliage tours, Christmas Holiday Santa Trains, School trips, Red Hatters, Senior bus tours, etc. etc. A growing Destination Wedding marketing effort is panning out as well! (see our article in our 08 vacation guide which highlights the Upper Hudson River Railroad and a wedding held there). As part of being able to lure tour operators to our region having a unique cache of itineraries to offer is key to landing them here.

Our economic tourism generator is always in need of new things to keep our region fresh and competative. When we, as a chamber, go promoting our region at national travel expos it is normally the first or second question we get asked...."what is new??" Of course this is always what media and travel writers want to know as well. It behooves us, our tourism-based businesses and yes, the county fathers and mothers to always be looking for opportunity when it comes knocking...or in this case...tooting its whistle!
