Looking for Open Source for your MAC

Having recently joined the 'World of Mac', I have been looking for a collection of open source software for Mac OS X to match the equivalent I have for PC. A quick trawl turned up the surprisingly named 'OpenSourceMac.org' which has a simple two page collection of what the site claims to be the best in the business. It's simply categorised and is an ideal starting point for new Mac users like myself. I really like QEmulator that allows you to run your favourite Windows programs, close to full speed.

I just love the new desktop site NetVibes. It has had a serious makeover with a slick interface that allows you to build your own personalised, ultimate startup 'universe' page. A friend has recently put me on to a cool site that allows you to find someone online. It's called 123 People and has a very clear simple interface plus it provides very detailed results from a wide variety of sources. I've just found someone based in Oz who I haven't seen or heard from for more than 15 years.

Back to the blogface after a few blog free weeks...

I've just read that Virgin Media's broadband customers, of which I count myself, now have all their email service hosted by the big G! They allow you to choose to have a new email address your.name@virginmedia.com plus allow existing customers to keep their @ntlworld.com and @virgin.net addresses.

The new service is based around Google Mail and comes with a nice 7GB storage!

If you haven't already found this great website-discovery engine and bookmark synching tool for Firefox(IE & Safari versions coming to a comp near you very soon) then you don't know what you're missing. With the 3 machines I've got it allows me to back up and synch my bookmarks across all of them, plus it also provides information about the site your on and offers suggestions for a comparable alternative.

This is just yet another great add-on that makes Firefox the browser king!

Back at the blogface after a serious technical blackout!
I'm always on the lookout for a new music site that will allow a bit of free listening, especially during the current climate. My new favourite site is We7 which lets you stream the latest tracks and even complete albums for free. There are some big names to choose from such as Coldplay, Take That, Sugababes and Britney. The only minor irritation is that every song starts with an advert, but after a while you don't notice it.

Welcome to a new film portal that let's you know where you can download, rent or buy a movie online or watch it on TV. Find any Film is backed by the UK Film Council and supported by Lottery funding and advertising which means that it is a free service for the user. It can let you know what particular format a film is available in such as Blu-Ray, DVD, VHS etc. and with a database of around 30,000 titles it's bound to have your favourites. I really like the Alert Me function that let's me know when a new release is in the Cinema or out in different formats. It also gives enough information about the plot, actors, directors etc. but maybe not to the same depth as The Internet Movie Database, another film buff's favourite. Get out the popcorn and browse this portal!

If like me you are slowly getting to grips with all the social networking, blogging scene then I've just found the ideal application that allows you to access and maintain them all in one place. AlertThingy has been created using Adobe Air technology and supports Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Digg etc. plus you can add RSS feeds via a selection or add in your specific RSS URL.

In addition AlertThingy aggregates your online friends, so a click on the contacts tab shows an alphabetical list of all these. You receive an alert anytime someone adds a new post or submits a new feed. It works really slickly and saves having to have numerous social networks and RSS sites open.

No that's not a dodgy opening question but a serious resource to help you solve a technical problem you're having with your favourite gadget. The site I've found most helpful is Fixya, which is run by Yahoo. It's basically a fantastic free technical help service that can help you fix your gadget problems in no time at all. It allows you to search for a specific model number, type in the problem you having and then review the solutions others have found. You can even chat live to an expert or post a query.

Another site worth a look is WikiHow which works like a giant online instruction manual. As users contribute to the content of this site it's more than likely that someone will have had the same problem as you.

We are all experiencing sailing on 'uncharted fiscal waters' at the moment with less and less trust in the banking system. Regardless of how much the government throws at it, the level of untrust is high as people are reluctant to save and ultimately do business with these institutions.

Looking for somewhere to put your money is a hard decision to make, so after a recent web and blog trawl I came across Zopa, a place where people meet to borrow money and also lend it. Zopa says "It's a smarter, fairer and altogether more human way of managing your money, where both borrowers and lenders get better rates". I am continuing to do some research on it and via it's community blog see what other people think. From what I've seen so far I'm impressed, so go and take a look, maybe it's for you too!

Just to let you know that the ITS GUI Web Media site has had a new facelift. No Botox was used in the redesign, just a cleaner, fresher palette!

I've just installed a cool Firefox extension called HighlightAll which is useful if you're looking for all occurrences of a particular word in a text rich web page. Simply double-click on one instance of that word and it appears highlighted everywhere in the page. Excellent and highly recommended!

What is a message 550 IP in RBL? Here's a solution!

Last week I launched a new web site for a client and had to email him over some html stationery. Sending via Outlook gave me the message "The server responded: 550 IP address 86.XX.XXX.XXX in RBL'. After consultation with my hosting provider I found that someone had labelled the ip address I was using as a source of spam.

What's the solution?
To find out why this has happened as well as how to get unblocked you first need to visit a site such as www.whatsmyip.net.

This will tell you your IP address, it will be of the form:

XX.XX.XX.XX

If you are receiving either:
550 IP in XBL,
550 IP in SBL, or
550 IP in PBL,

please go to http://www.spamhaus.org/xbl/index.lasso and enter your IP address into the form.

If you are receiving either:
550 IP in SCBL or
550 IP in RBL

please go to http://www.spamcop.net/bl.shtml and enter your IP address.

Both of these pages will explain the reason for the black listing and they also have a "remove IP address" facility. Please note that it may take several hours for your IP address to become delisted.

There are just so many different video formats to get your head around these days, some of which can only be played on specific devices. So if you've got a DivX video file on your PC and you wish to watch it on your iPod or PSP you'll have to convert it into the relevant format. I have come across the aptly named Quick Media Converter a fast, free converter that appears to handle just about any format you can throw at it! It's easy to use and lets you convert multiple files of different formats in one go. If you have a webcam it also captures this directly.

Just came across this cool desktop tool that allows quick access to your most commonly accessed programs, files and folders. It is fully customisable and is summoned by clicking the middle mouse button then rotate items using the scroll wheel and click to launch your chosen program. To add items just drag and drop them on to the dock. Get a copy of Circle Dock and have a play!!

Chrome shines for Google!

Google's venture into the browser market with Chrome has been hailed as a success as it managed to capture surfers away from IE and equal the number of Opera users, in it's first week. My initial trials have been favourable, certainly speed wise but I'm a bit concerned about security for internet banking, shopping etc.

All browsers have merits and drawbacks but you make up your choice and go and download a copy of Chrome and have a play.
