There weren’t any stagecoaches in my time, but there were still a few horse-drawn conveyances.

I walked to school each day (.7 mile) and soon learned that glasses were required in order to read or do just about anything. I began using them and kept on wearing them for the next 70 years. Indeed, I was totally dependent on glasses. It was not possible to do anything without them except sleep.

Then in 2008, I had a new-fangled surgery that made glasses unnecessary. My new vision allows me to drive without them. The remaining problem is to convince by subconscious self that I can actually see.

When it’s time to go out of our home, I feel sure that I need my glasses. It is necessary to operate my brain manually and tell myself, YOU CAN SEE. Forget about glasses!

Years back, I read of doctors who did cosmetic enhancement surgery. After healing, patients would return and claim they looked just the same as before surgery. They didn’t, but felt they did. Now I understand what was going on. When we are convinced that something is true, it’s very hard for reality to penetrate the years of mental scar tissue and to enjoy our new condition. But I really do when I think about it.

Now where did I lay my glasses?

America Compared to Rural Africa

We need reminders of how easy we have life in America.

Recently I purchased a pair of sunglasses with an MP3 player built in. The cost was very low and the experience of others with the product has drawn praises.

Then I came across a similar setup invented by a young man in Africa. Racial name-calling is always regrettable, but let’s look at the larger picture.

The holy name of God is used in vain endlessly and without a jail sentence or even a rebuff. We hear it at school, on radio and TV, in the workplace and nearly every place people congregate.

Notice how Israel was warned about using God’s name as a byword:

No using the name of GOD, your God, in curses or silly banter; GOD won't put up with the irreverent use of his name. Deuteronomy 6:11 in the Message version.

This is the same God people in our nation pray to for jobs and good weather. How can a person expect God to hear their prayers when they so disregard his name.

Saying, “I didn’t mean anything by it” totally misses the point. He didn’t say “Don’t use my name in vain unless you aren’t going to mean anything by it.”

Let’s change our words to exalt God’s name and plan to never use it as fillers or strengtheners in our everyday conversation.

Won By a Child’s Love

Abortion protesters showed up when President Obama spoke at Notre Dame. Among them was Norma Covey, the one-time poster child of the abortion movement. Some reports say she was arrested, other reports deny it. Norma was the Roe in Wade vs. Roe.

But in 1995 Norma changed sides. Emily Mackay, then 7 years old, befriended this pro-abortion person, asking questions that were very hard to answer. One was something like, "If you love children, then why do you let them kill babies at the (abortion) clinic?"

Eventually, Norma attended church and accepted Christ as her savior. It was not the solid logic of the Christian position, but rather the little girl who loved Norma and penetrated her heart that brought about the change of direction.

Norma Covey was then baptized by Flip Benham, the leader of “the other side.” Over the years, she has used her life to undo some of the damage caused by her original stance on abortion - something she never experienced for herself.

Clearly, it may be love more than logic that turns a life around.

In His Face

A friend of ours is not noted for his interested in religion. He knows ours and told this story.

Said friend was cruising in his large motorhome with his extended family on board when they were hit hard from behind by a motorist. The story goes that the other driver was drunk and traveling about 100 mph. He hit the motorhome so hard that it knocked the rear wheels off and totaled the machine.

Our friend got the rig off of the pavement and came to a stop with a sign three inches from his windshield. It was the sign for the local Church of Christ. I wonder if that would be forced advertising?

At least, he saw some significance in the sign as he told me the story.

Out of a Curse Came a Blessing

This weekend, I was cursed by the Vundo Trojan. My computer became unmanageable. My virus alarm was going off every 5-10 seconds. Advertising was popping up every few moments. To cure the devilish malady, I hired an online company to clean the machine and they did a wonderful job. Their address is: http://www.onlinecomputerrepair.org/ and Ryan Olson was the tech.

Ryan removed at least 150 files that had come to visit and decided to stay. During my research to get rid of this Devil-inspired disease, I came across OpenDNS. Such a blessing for anyone who takes the few moments to get engaged.

Every time a computer user types a website name in the address bar, the browser goes to the Domain Name Server (DNS) assigned by his hosting company. This is standard the world over. Everybody with a website name is listed and some are MALICIOUS. One somewhere distributes Vundo.

OpenDNS keeps a list of malicious sites and keeps the user from going there. If one of these Satanically-inspired nasties gets on the computer and calls home for its friends to come too (hence the Trojan idea), the nasty can’t reach home and so is rendered useless. Had I been using this service, my hateable trojan could not have done its hellish work.

Further, now I can block all categories of unlovables. The site offers five general levels of protection and each one of these can be customized for the computer-user’s taste. Sites that can be blocked include those adult-related, porn sites and phishing sites. There are dozens of categories. Each user can set up a list to always allow or never allow in addition to the categories. This gives parents a way to control what their children view. It gives the library or school supervision they did not have before.

All of this is free of cost and the change is permanent, but reversible. The OpenDNS site explains how to point your DNS requests to their computers. Visit them at: OpenDNS.com.

Yesterday, the site had over eleven billion hits, so it’s not just my notion.

Caring for the Brain

After a visit to the lab at the clinic, I received a 3-page print out of the chemistry of my body. When an element was out of range, either too high or too low, the entry was printed in bold letters. The marvels of science!

As Christians, we are also concerned about our minds, avoiding the kind of mental junk food that society labels as entertainment. Jesus and His apostles had much to say about feeding the spirit of man.

But the mind relies on the facilities of the brain. Our love for God can only be expressed based on our memory of Him and His great works as seen throughout the universe.

Unlike our computers, our brain loses memory power. It declines with age. In our younger days, there was an over-abundance of memory, but time takes its toll. Now we may enter a room and forget our purpose, mislay our car keys or tell the same story twice to the same person - even within a few minutes.

Is there a solution? Yes, at least a partial one that delays or reverses the memory loss. The food we eat - or don’t eat is important. Minimizing the wrong foods and being sure that we get the right foods helps. Exercise, both physical and mental, contributes to better memory and there are supplements that help slow the brain’s downhill slide.

One friend complained about his increasing difficulty in remembering. I told him about ginkgo biloba, a supplement used almost world-wide to help in memory loss. He thanked me and did nothing about it. Today his memory loss is so pronounced that he cannot be employed and lives in retirement. While some studies say this supplement does not slow the onset of dementia, the studies are not negative about memory enhancement. Ginkgo may have help this man be productive a few more years.

New research is being done in the area of brain enhancement. The book 20/20 Brain Power by Joshua Reynolds spans the gap between technical studies and our layperson vocabularies. Hundreds came. We saw people from Florida, Puerto Rico, and India.

It was moving to hear their daughter Jean affirm that she wanted to be a Christian woman like Esther. Son Jon has been a stalwart of the faith since childhood.

I thought of the God-related decisions that had contributed so much to Esther’s highly-regarded life. Her parents loved the Lord and raised her to love him, too. Her dad was the controversial and to some people – abrasive Archie Word, among the last of the great revivalists. He was loved in mill towns and disdained in college cities.

Brother Word had a heritage from the John Mulkey movement in Kentucky. This is the preach-it-hard group that many church historians discount. John Mulkey of Tomkinsville, Kentucky stood up for what he believed. He was agressive. His son, John Newton Mulkey, spent his years preaching the same message at Glasgow, Kentucky.

Archie Word's mother Maggie (whom this writer knew) lived at the edge of Glasgow and attended the Glasgow church as a girl. Archie Word's pre-school church experiences would have been under the influence of the Mulkeys clan and their hard-driving preaching.

In turn, John Mulkey had been raised to love Jesus by his father Jonathan, a preacher. Jonathan’s own father Philip had been converted to Christ by one John Newton while studying Isaiah 53. We could step back to Shubal Stearns who made the decision to follow Christ from hearing Jonathan Edwards and George Whitfield about 1740. Starns studied on his own to learn about the role of baptism in salvation.

When Philip Mulkey gave up fiddling for dances and turned his considerable talent toward heavenly causes, he could never had dreamed that in five or six generations, an heir would become renown because God had given her an extreme measure of musical talent and that it was all used to bring praise to the heavenly realm, perhaps even competing with the angels.

Healed Again

My aneurysm is gone. It was behind my eye.

Four months ago, my optometrist sent me to a doctor specializing in diseases of the eye. He found my field of vision was below normal and that I had an aneurysm (balloon-like expansion) behind one eye. He asked me to return later so he could monitor its progress. When it broke, I would lose vision in that eye.

During today’s visit, my field of vision was back in the normal range. But he was puzzled that he could not locate the aneurysm. He showed me the November X-ray with the bulge and today’s where the same blood veins were quite normal. I told him that I would thank my boss.

On the previous visit, I had told the Dr. about recovering from macular degeneration. He dismissed this entirely. One doesn’t recover from that disorder. Now he has a story that he can’t deny because he provided all of the evidence.

How we thank the Lord for his graciousness, even in these throwaway bodies that are a template for our eternal ones.

Dave Redick's Letter

We have an in-house publication at the Minnehaha Church most weeks. The following article appeared one week before Dave died. We have removed the parts that are no longer relevant:

Preacher Dave Redick’s letter is a classic on how a Christian could look at health concerns:

As I have stated before, I am fully confident in our God and trust Him to do whatever is right for me and His kingdom in this matter. I would love to be able to continue serving Him here for awhile longer (at 58 I might have a few more years under different circumstances.)

It is, however, entirely in His eternally competent and loving hands. If surgery goes well, the plan is now to start me on what they call "targeted therapy" unique to kidney cancer (yes, the cancer in my lungs and brain is kidney cancer) within four weeks of the surgery. From human perspective, these treatments are not curative. There is currently no reliable cure for kidney cancer. However, these drugs have been shown to slow and even reverse tumor growth for a time. A few people around the country are still living after the first approval and use of these drugs five or so years ago. Ah, human hope. It's nice, but my hope is in the Lord!

Please pray for me as God has given us permission to ask Him when we are in need. Pray also that I might be able to return to the pulpit. There are few things I love better than preaching His word and telling of the marvelous nature of our loving God.
Thank you and God bless you.
Dave Redick

God chose to spare Dave the "targeted therapy." Looking at the long view, we are glad. Looking at the short view, we are sad, along with hundreds of others.

More Frosting

A day or so after Dave Redick left this note (copied from below) he moved on to Glory.

While I did not benefit directly from training at NCB as a student, I am greatful to you, Charles, and your dear wife, Lois, for your years of training others and the fact that, ever since I drew my first breath of born again air, you've been there as a solid figure in the distance. I always looked up to you. Your Scripture Supply House kept me well materialed with tapes and lessons that were suitable as Kathi and I reoriented our lives toward the kingdom. He responded with words to the effect, "In our heritage, we speak of repentance and baptism rather than being born again."

Mr. Reagan grew up in the Christian Church in Dixon, Illinois. When he was 11, he read That Printer of Udell’s by Harold Bell Wright and determined to be baptized into Christ.

Mr. Reagan made an important distinction in his response to the press. Such descriptions as being "born again" and "receiving Jesus as your personal savior" are culturally defined. They may mean one thing to a Catholic, something else to a Baptist and yet something else to a Pentecostal person.

While the figure of "being born again" was spoken by Jesus, it was not recorded by John for more than 50 years. By that time, the teaching of repentance and baptism for salvation had covered the Roman Empire. Understanding "being born again" was easy. It is what the believers had been doing for the previous five decades. The meaningful figure of "being born again" today is separated from its original setting and defined by what the speaker already believes.

To "receive Jesus as one’s personal Savior" is also defined by the religious background of the speaker. To many people, it is simply a moment in time when the candidate says, "Yes, Lord, I believe." But the definition does vary from speaker to speaker and church group to church group.

By contrast, following the resurrection of Jesus, the commands of repentance and baptism were commonly presented to the inquirers.

Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Act 2:38 NASB)

Repentance presupposes faith in Christ's resurrection. How could a person repent without faith?

But when they believed Philip preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, men and women alike. (Act 8:12 NASB)

And he ordered the chariot to stop; and they both went down into the water, Philip as well as the eunuch, and he baptized him. (Act 8:38 NASB)

'Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.' (Act 22:16 NASB)

Missing here is the user-defined "They received Jesus Christ as their personal Savior." This phrase does not have a New Testament equivalent.

Also missing is praying for Jesus to enter the inquirer's heart. Those wanting to make Christ their Lord are never instructed to pray the Sinner's Prayer or any other prayer.

The language of Luke is clear and unambiguous. The meaning is not culturally defined and does not change. It allows every budding believer to express his or her love for Christ who said, "If you love me, keep my commandments."

By contrast, the user-defined salvation language omits repentance and it omits immersion, the very words used by Luke, the reporter of conversions in Acts.

We must call Bible things by Bible names. For the followers of Jesus to ever be united, we need to begin with the initial step of becoming a Christian. If we can’t get the first one right, the rest doesn’t make much difference.

Thank you, President Reagan for clarifying the issue.

A Thank You From a Simpler Time

Dear Grandma,

This is Lois writing. Rod was honored by his many friends and even some of his critics came to his funeral. The church building was full and many spoke of the great impact that he had on them. He was tired of life and found the increasing limitations burdensome. He collected on the hope that he had taught others including this writer.

Fellow San Jose Bible College graduate Ray Weideman came to the end of life’s journey. Even in the closing months of life, he won another person to Christ in the assisted-living home. It was not possible to see Ray without a smile on his face. He lived in the present, rarely discussing the past, even though he could remember it.

Dean Grammon graduated to glory with many, many friends and relatives coming to pay final respects in Stayton, Oregon. Dean leaves behind children and grandchildren who follow the faith and love the Lord.

Church leaders came from afar for the funeral of Harold Buckles in Salem. The funeral was conducted just a few steps from the Brunk House, gathering place for Oregon’s pioneer preachers. While Harold was not a pioneer, he certainly qualified as a veteran gospel preacher. He was 98 at passing.

Tony La Fond moved on to better housing this spring. Tony was widely known among youth for directing recreation at summer camp, but also for being able to preach the Word when the need arose.

Stacy Marriott, graduate of Boise Bible College, gospel preacher and long-time elder passed from this life after a bout with cancer. The high respect for Stacy can be seen in the larger number of friends that made their way to the memorial service.

Larry Kubow died with little warning this spring. We share grandchildren. Lois had just recently fixed him one of his favorite meals and he in turn played the old hymns of the Faith so we could all sing together.

Evelyn (Smith) Coloff has been in declining health and the Lord finally took her. She loved the Lord and her family, including her daughter, Julie Barker.

Finally on our list is Dorothy Snelson. She has been praying for the Lord to take her for several years. She is a veteran member of the Minnehaha Church in Vancouver. Did we mention that she was 102?

This Should Make Us Happy

Over the past two months, veteran preacher Gary Strubhar in Roseburg, Oregon has made very good progress in recovering from Parkinson’s Disease. He says this is due to diet and the prayers of the saints.

His voice is stronger all day and into the evening hours. He walks quite normally and no longer shuffles. His posture is straighter.

The tremors are almost gone and his is getting back his motor skills.

His writing is almost back to normal and is quite readable. The expert examined extensively and then explained what he saw in great detail. Sadly, the condition cannot be reversed. Just live with the diminished eye capacity.

Many of my friends prayed that I would be able to continue seeing.

In recent years, I have asked my new optometrist about the situation and he said that he could not see any macular degeneration. I thought he may lack the skills.

Recently, in preparation for an lens implant, I visited a highly skilled surgeon who doubles as a professor at the local university. The Spirit of God was so convincing that about 3,000 obeyed what Peter said: They repented and were baptized to have their sins removed from God’s records. Peter had an 11 man support team that endorsed his teaching. The 12-man jury rendered a unanimous verdict. Faith in the resurrected Jesus, repentance to change attitudes toward truth and baptism to identify with the resurrection story and to be “in Christ.” Uncomplicated.

As the crowds returned to their Jewish communities across the Roman Empire, they took this unique plan for pardon home and repeated it over and over. People obeyed these steps to peace with God.

The “New Testament” had not been written. Not the four gospels, not any writing of Paul or Peter or James. The teachings set forth by word-of-mouth from the inspired Apostles stood unchallenged. This interlude continued for at least 15 years. The believers experienced a real war with the world and enjoyed real peace within the body.

The A.D. 30 Test – Part 1

The remarkable story of Jesus was told over and over again during and after his lifetime. His teachings and miracles made lively conversation. The culture was oral-based rather than text-based culture like ours because making documents was expensive. Writing materials were even used a second time to keep down costs.

So the greatest story every told was indeed told and not written for more than twenty years after the resurrection. Jesus said, “He that has hears to hear, let him hear.” We could have sung “Tell Me The Story of Jesus” and have been right on target.

The story of the risen Jesus was presented officially by the men whom Jesus had tutored during his ministry. He had promised them perfect recall in John 14. Peter and the other 11 used this treasure when they addressed multiplied thousands at Pentecost in A.D. 30.

Their written authority was the inspired men of times past and their current authority was their own experiences with Jesus, perfectly recalled. It was this verbal story about Jesus that spread around Jerusalem, Judea and out into the Roman Empire. The believers were united and the cause of Christ spread without the hindrances of internal dissension.

Harmony was a key ingredient in church life in A.D. 30. Oh, that our generation could recapture that mountaintop experience.

Turn Up The Heat

Charles Swindoll in his book Come before Winter tells of the time when Lord Oliver Cromwell was reigning in Britain and the country ran low on silver.

Lord Cromwell sent his men to the cathedrals to see if they could find any of the precious metal. This couple enjoys saving money. Some of our friends aren't interested, so we are careful where we talk about it. But it's not in the same catagory as porn. It is upright, wholesome, fun and enables us to help the needy.

We could talk about our no-contract, $1-per-week cell phones (T-Mobile). There are no other fees. Both of us have them. Also in the communication department is our $3-per-month unlimited long-distance calling (Skype). We have a cordless Skype phone from GE. We can keep in contact and encourage others, especially seniors. Charles calls 14 different men who have been largely cast aside.

Then there is travel. We manage the Rapid Rewards points on Southwest Air so we get free trips to Tampa each year. Yes, we are having fun.

If the grocery store files for bankruptcy, it may be Lois' doings. She frequently buys her groceries for half-price by using special offers. The clerks know her and show ways of cutting costs even more. They know that some of the purchases go straight to the needy.

We can buy and sell stocks and other financial products for no cost (Zecco). Others pay brokers large sums for the identical service.

We could talk about eye glasses (Zenni Optical-$8 with frames) and hearing aids (http://stores.ebay.com/HEARING-AIDS). There are tremendous savings to be made.

The Lord shows us the route to savings. They are all legitimate and honest. There is a real sense of accomplishment when we do more with less money.

One In a Million

My computer has over 1,000,000 files. Most of them have been generated by the computer itself, but some of them I wrote or edited. How does one find a part in a wrecking yard that size?

After trying a number of programs that claimed to find local files, I have settled on Yahoo Desktop Search. After it is first installed, it needs to index everything in sight and on site. (File types can be excluded.) The interface is not elegant, but it works. And it's free.

I have shut off the indexing service that belongs to Windows. It was never ready. Other external indexing programs have been removed. Now, when I need to search, I can find files in a few seconds, either by name, or file type or even by special words within the file. Yes, Desktop Search can find one in a million.

One added point, Yahoo Desktop Search does not live peaceably with other programs, so it is not kept running in the background. When I need it, I load it. After use, it gets unloaded unless it is time to index more files.

Did They Read the Email That I Sent?

We need to defend ourselves against email. It is becoming less useful as a means of personal communication. When I send an email, I wonder if it was read or bundled with the junk.

There is a tool that removes the mystery. It is ReadNotify.com. By the year, it costs $2 per month and works very well. I don't use it often.

Recently a large insurance company owed me for a car and they agreed they did. But the adjuster would only respond to email occasionally. I needed to know if she was getting my email. I used readnotify to establish that she was indeed opening my email. This gave me the information I needed to go over her head in the company. It was not miscommunication. Armed with knowledge that she was stalling (for many months), I called a corporate office and said that my next call would be to the State Insurance Commissioner. I had a phone call from a different adjuster in less than 24 hours and the settlement was a just one.

ReadNotify made the difference.
