Of course, I should have been even more clear that there was only a tiny glimmer of "better" in Sharia law. Its general aim and largest function seems to be to keep women hidden away so that men don't lose control of themselves. It really degrades both sexes, doesn't it?

I have no problem with the concept of certain justice. However I am too much of a "thoroughly modern woman" to ever go back to what Sharia law demands of women.

I'm not answering your question, I know, but I want to make one small point in FAVOR of Sharia law: It leads to a far more law-abiding society in general. Yes, many of the laws are "wrong" from our viewpoint, but laws on murder and theft are prosecuted and punished much "better" than they are here, because of our excessive interest in "law" rather than "justice."

Old Judge Parker of the Texas Rangers once said wisely, "It isn't the severity of the punishment, but the certainty of it." There should be no such thing as "getting off on a technicality," and in Sharia courts there aren't. They find facts and mete out punishment. What they don't do but which we would or should is to prosecute, AFTER the criminal case is over, any law enforcement misconduct in the case. Forgot to read him his rights? Fine, he gets 30 years for what he confessed to, and the cop gets a 10 day suspension (first offense).
