It was selected as the opening film for the 1997 <b>Cannes Film Festival</b>. The production design for the movie was developed by <b>Jean Giraud</b> (<b>Moebius</b>) and <b>Jean-Claude Mézières</b> and showed a strong influence of French comic storytelling. The costume design was created by French fashion designer <b>Jean-Paul Gaultier</b>, who produced 954 costumes used in the film. The movie was written and directed by <b>Luc Besson</b>.
