In January 2007, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics co-released product tests that found the chemical 1,4-dioxane in nearly two dozen popular baby soaps, bubble baths and shampoos, including Sesame Street character brands and even the iconic "pure and gentle" Johnson & Johnson's baby shampoo. Make Up Danger for Pregnant Women

France is intending to label cosmetics according to their safety for pregnant women. The alarm was raised be Roselyne Bachelot, the French health minister, saying that health authorities in France want to label cosmetics as being fit or not for pregnant women.This intention comes after a study was published by the Imperial College London, revealing that pregnant women who experienced higher than normal hairspray exposure had double the likelihood of giving birth to babies with hypospadias, which is a reproductive development condition. The report suggested that the affect was due to hormone disruption caused by chemicals in the hairspray.The British government want the EU to address the issue in a complete fashion rather than as an isolated agenda, for which reason they want to see it added to the European Cosmetics Directive . . . read article.

What is the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics?

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is a national coalition of health and environmental groups
working to protect our health by eliminating chemicals linked to cancer and other health problems from personal care products. We want the government and cosmetics companies to make sure products are safe for our long-term health before they hit store shelves.

What is the problem?
· Products we use every day -- including shampoo, deodorant, lotions and make-up --
contain chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects, reproductive problems and learning
disabilities. Hazardous chemicals to not belong in products we use on our bodies.

· The FDA is failing to protect our health. Cosmetics are among the least regulated
products on the market. Major loopholes in federal law allow companies to put unlimited
amounts of nearly any chemical into cosmetics -- even chemicals that are known to harm
human health, such as lead and formaldehyde.

· Worse, an industry-funded panel called the Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel—not the
FDA—is currently in charge of reviewing the safety of cosmetics!

· Americans are less protected than consumers in other countries. The European
Union has banned more than 1,100 harmful chemicals from cosmetic products. In the
U.S., only ten ingredients are restricted.

Breast Cancer Awareness and Your Cosmetics

I Love what I do! Researching, writing and doing what I can to help all of us create health and wellness, a great source of abundance.

And in this month of Breast Cancer Awareness I'm so concerned about the lack of information we get on why we must read and UNDERSTAND the ingredient lists of our personal care products that we use daily. Whether it's women's lipstick, baby oil or men's shaving cream we need to know what is going on our skin.

Green washing and slick marketing mislead us to think that the products we are using are safe, but, the billions of dollars at stake do not necessarily lead corporations to put our health first on their list of corporate profit requirements.

We can create a better world through consumer power. Empower yourself daily, redirect your daily spending toward products that are safe for you, your family and the planet. Find products that surround you with health and wellness.

"Consumers believe that 'if it's on the market, it can't hurt me.' And this belief is sometimes wrong." Director of the FDAs Office of Cosmetics and Colors (FDA 1988)

For example:
PAHs, or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, are common contaminants in petroleum, also called petroleum jelly or paraffin and sold under the well-known brand name of Vaseline.

PAHs and Breast Cancer
Researchers at Columbia University found that the breast tissue of women with breast cancer was 2.6 times more likely to contain elevated levels of PAHs than the breast tissue of women without breat cancer. (Rundle et al. 2000). And this is only ONE chemical source, it does not even begin to address that we come in contact with over 100 chemicals a day using our personal care products.

I find it astounding that we seem to ignore the connection between our daily chemical environment and our health as we hand over our dollars to corporations that are not holding our health, our childrens future and the environment in everyone's best interest. As Breast Cancer Awareness month winds down being AWARE is the keyword to keep in mind throughout the year, every day, when you are at the market, department store or pharmacy. Your health is your responsibility so educate yourself as much as possible about how to create a healthy environment for you and your family.

This is the last segment about Safe Skin Care. This information comes from a brochure from Safe Cosmetics. This part discusses labeling and men. Your money speaks so powerfully when you search for safe, healthy products. And your body will thank you by staying healthier and stronger.

9. MEN ARE NOT IMMUNE TO THESE PROBLEMS.
Two products marketed to men to color gray hair (EBL GreyBan and Grecian Formula 16) contain lead acetate, which can harm fertility and impact the development of a child before birth. Clairol Herbal Essences True Intense Hair Color for Men is among the highest concern hair color products in Skin Deep. Some after-shave lotions, antidandruff shampoos, tooth whiteners, sunless tanning products, men’s hair-removal products and colognes are also in the highest-concern category. Skin Deep lists many safer alternatives in each category.

10. THE WORD “NATURAL” ON A PRODUCT LABEL DOESN’T MEAN IT’S SAFE—OR NATURAL.
Neutrogena After Sun Treatment with Natural Soy has one of the highest hazard ratings of the lotions in Skin Deep. What's so "natural" about a product with more than 10 different ingredients that raise health concerns? Neutrogena is owned by Johnson & Johnson, which markets its products as superior because of their "natural" properties and recommendations from health-care providers. Another example: Barielle 10 Piece Natural Nail Care System contains several ingredients of high concern including dibutyl phthalate, fragrance and urea, despite the word “natural” in the product name.

My suggestion, use the Skin Deep: Safe Cosmetics Database. I have learned so much from their information. Shop for safer products. I do recommend a product line that is Certified Organic, Miessence. This company has triggered a passion in me to share with you what I am learning.

Safe Skin Care - Part 4

The biggest concern about all of this is that I have not been able to find any studies about the toxic effects of using the 1,000's of chemicals, used in the personal care products we use everyday, when they are mixed together. If they are so dangerously toxic alone, they must be much more toxic when mixed.

7. TWO OF THE HIGHEST-CONCERN COSMETICS ARE MARKETED TO AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN.
Products promising lighter skin and straighter hair are problematic because of their message about what is considered beautiful. But the Skin Deep report shows that some hair relaxers and skin lighteners share a second problem: they contain ingredients such as hydroquinone, placenta and petroleum byproducts that are linked to cancer, reproductive and hormonal problems, and some of them sensitize the skin, which means that dangerous ingredients are more likely to penetrate into the body.

8. EVEN INGREDIENTS THAT ARE KNOWN TO CAUSE HARM CAN BE PUT INTO PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS.
Few ingredients have been assessed for long-term health impacts, but those that have—and are known or suspected to be toxic—are still allowed in cosmetics. Seven of the most problematic are:

MERCURY
Often listed as thimerosal on ingredient labels, mercury is a possible human carcinogen, and a human reproductive or developmental toxin. Found in some eye drops, ointments and mascaras.
Note: Mercury is so poisonous that the Loons who live in polluted waters from acid rain, which contains mercury, cannot raise their babies, they forget how.

PLACENTA
Placenta produces progesterone, estrogen and other hormones that can interfere with the body’s normal hormone functions and can lead to serious health problems—like breast cancer—when used in cosmetics. Sometimes used in hair relaxers, moisturizers and toners.
Definition: A structure attached to the wall of the uterus to nourish the fetus during pregnancy. We do not need to use any animals in our products.

LEAD ACETATE
This compound of lead is a known human reproductive and developmental toxin. Prohibited from use in cosmetics in the European Union. Found in some hair dyes and cleansers.

PETROCHEMICALS
These byproducts of crude oil (appearing on labels as petrolatum, mineral oil and paraffin) may contain known or suspected human carcinogens as well as harmful breakdown products or impurities from manufacturing processes (such as 1,4-Dioxane), which are not listed on ingredient labels. Found in some hair relaxers, shampoos, anti-aging creams, mascaras, perfumes, foundations, lipsticks and lip balms.

PHTHALATES
These plasticizing chemicals are probable human reproductive or developmental toxins and endocrine disruptors. Two phthalates often used in cosmetics (dibutyl and diethylhexyl) have been banned in the European Union. Found in some nail polishes, fragrances and hair sprays.

HYDROQUINONE
A possible carcinogen and probable neurotoxin and skin sensitizer, hydroquinone can also cause a skin disease called ochronosis, which chemileaves irreversible black-blue lesions on skin. Found in some skin lightening products and moisturizers.

NANOPARTICLES
Extremely tiny particles which are largely untested and unlabeled in personal care products, capable of being absorbed directly into the bloodstream. Found in some eye shadows, bronzers, sunscreens and lotions.
Note: Because there are really no regulations, particularly in the US, the manufacturers just started using nanospheres, there aren't any studies or information on how they may be affecting our health or DNA.

Hopefully you are beginning to see the enormous injustice to all women and our families as we unknowingly purchase from companies that simply do not care about our health or protecting the environment.

It is through our own choices of how we spend our money on skin care products that will create change in an industry that simply is not concerned about our health. Labels that use words like natural and organic could be hiding extremely toxic ingredients. Educate yourself, buy healthy skin care products for you and your family.

5. The $50-BILLION U.S. COSMETICS INDUSTRY ROUTINELY OPPOSES LAWS THAT WOULD PROTECT
CONSUMERS AND THE ENVIRONMENT.
The Cosmetics, Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA) has lobbied against laws that would control pollution at cosmetics manufacturing plants, require recycled content in packaging or add more consumer safety information on labels. The industry says it doesn’t need laws because it can voluntarily regulate itself. An industry-funded panel called the Cosmetics Ingredient Review panel—not the FDA or any other government agency—is currently in charge of reviewing the
safety of cosmetics.

6. WE HAVE TO PROTECT OURSELVES UNTIL WE CONVINCE THE GOVERNMENT TO PROTECT US.
According to Skin Deep, the highest-concern product categories are:
• Hair color and bleach
• Hair relaxer
• Nail polish
• Skin lightener
• Nail treatment
