OK - fine - I can admit to being wrong. It was actually quite a nice, not-too-hot day for BMore Pride and we had the amazingly good fortune of having some dim-witted protesters outside the fence right next to the stage. Yay for actual forces of evil to taunt through the mic for crowd amusement. Here's Tawni sending them an appropriate hand gesture while the rest of us laugh.

They should load up right at the beginning of the set. Then you can catch a little of the heckling in action in a couple video clips posted, also in the media section + a performance of Deserve.

Pride and Stuffs

Oh my! This has been seemingly the longest and most eventful pride season ever. It started last Friday at around 1:30pm, when we had to show up at the 9:30 Club to unload equipment. It's nice to have men in black descend on your car and unload all the heavy stuff you have jammed in there! Later in the day we had a sound check - and then spent a lot of time waiting in the strange crevices of the club. Go to the media page for a little taste of that stuff.

Then last Sunday was the Capitol Pride street festival. It was early as all-heck, as well as just as hot. We got introduced by Mr. Modern-Day Hollywood Squares, Bruce Vilanch, and played some tunes-some of which you can watch on the Media page.

Then Monday - onto the Ottobar with Pariah Parahna and Donita Sparks.

Finally we get to last night - Baltimore Pride's Block Party. You know- we (and by we I mean me, Bethany, and Selena and Eva) had not actually seen the special choreography-involving-back-up-dancers-treat that was to close out our set -so we were quite tickled when dudes started doing flips in front of us. All-in-all, although we cut many songs from the set, all was cool.

Now today is the Baltimore Pride festival in the park. I'm sure it will be the hottest day of the year- because it always is.

So we had a nice little time last night, despite the fact that we were, in fact, completely soaking wet after playing YNot! Glad we got to debut a new song (It Was Easy to Steal Your Girlfriend). Special thanks to Chip and others who helped schlep in that sort of adverse temperature situation.

We're totally excited about the next show - this coming Friday - 9:30 club - get your tix now! AND...then in July, we're very happy to announce a show at Rams Head Live! on the 12th...so stay tuned for more details about that one!

DIZZY!

My head is literally spinning right off my body!...b/c we have a major! announcement.

We had a killer show last night with the excellent American Princes and the charismatic and lovely Northern State at Ottobar. Everyone was super-duper awesome, and we really enjoyed ourselves...but that's not the only reason for my dizzy-spell!

We will be playing the 9:30 Club for the Capital Pride Women's Concert - with such amazing!!! acts: Melissa Ferrick, Betty, AND Bitch! We are so very excited. The show is 18+, Friday, June 13 - get tix in advance..as this is a BIG one!! Yay!

I hope it's obvious I've been doing a little sprucing up of the site. I've got some new (geeky) tricks up my sleeves that I've been wanting to try to use to make the site more "clickity-clickable." AND - I had to get a picture of Eva's bass on the front page...since it seems that no one can resist the thrall of the pink glitter bass guitar.

Girls Rock...MOST DEFINITELY!

Once again I've been neglectful of posting. Ah well.

Today we played an awesome show. It was for a collection of little girls (+ a handful of boys and parents/adults) after the screening of the Girls Rock documentary about the original Rock and Roll Camp for Girls in Oregon. The movie had us crying and feeling all warm and fuzzy. I highly recommend it. Watch it and show it to any girls you know.

Then we played for the kiddies...and they were probably the most amazingly active audience we've ever had - what with the jumping, dancing, and running conga line around the theater. They were screaming into microphones with us, yelling "hey," and asking for autographs (haha). I think we're all totally inspired to try and get more involved in the local RnR camp that opens this summer. Check out their website and give them some money, or some time, or something. As we have found, we need more girls who rock around here. Now we've got a training camp to get them headed toward rock and roll and all that cool self-esteem building type stuff!

Boy...I've been really negligent with our little diary over here, eh? So here we are in 2008..holy crap....you know OGO first materialized in about October of 2004, and when I think about where we've come from and what we are now, I can barely understand how it happened at all. I've been searching my computer to try to find our original set list from our first show, and I can't find it (though I bet Tawni has it shoved in her folder of OGO relics). I did find a sample one from very early on though....so for your general amusement:

So as you can see, mostly covers...most of which we no longer even remember how to play. And this isn't even that early on ...probably at least 7 months into being a band. So how did a cover band turn into us....it's so weird.

So anyway - I'm thinking about all this stuff b/c last night was Kristen's last show with us. She's off to do a much more thorough job of spinning, chopping, frying...and, ah, souffleing. Anyways - I swore to myself that the combination with her would be the last combo for Odd Girl Out - and here we are, again minus a guitarist, and yet still persisting. I guess we've still got songs left to play.

OGO will be working as a 4 piece for the time being, but if you know of any/are a female rhythm guitarist, bassist, or even drummer, there may be a place for you in OGO. We're willing to shift our roles (again) for the right person.

figured I'd post a little about our Chuckles show last night. Big old thanks to Daisy Grenades for coming down from NYC to play a show with us. We know how damn far that drive is....thanks for being so friendly. You've got some dedicated fans for sure...driving from Jersey to check you out in Baltimore..that's pretty awesome.

Ken of Fall Back Plan, thanks so much for letting everyone using your drums...I love anyone who volunteers to make it possible for me not to lug my own out.

Recher Theatre Show (aka the Bearded Sword Incident)

Ahh, but it's nice to see our name in lights. We met yet another photographer who was totally sweet and willing to take our photos. All pictures you see from this show are taken by cms, jr. Thanks! So we wondered what could happen when about 20 twelve through maybe 16-yr-olds show up with a bunch of tupperware and nearly no instruments...and unfortunately we found at. This is the last we're gonna mention of B.S. (how fitting an abbreviation)...but wtf!?!

Anyways. As our usual luck dictates, Kristen's amp wouldn't power up..she played direct through the pa system instead...which at such a high volume, was not actually as bad as it could have been. (Note: Any amp companies want us to endorse them? We'd be happy to..haha!). We also shared the stage with Armed Elephant, who were extremely cool and also nice enough to lend us both equipment and the photographer that came to shoot them. Here's a selection of a couple additional pics (you can find all of them posted off our History page).

Phasefest stuff...

This took a while to get to, but it's for a legit reason - I had to go back to school and do bulletin boards and that sort of stuffs..and it totally monopolized every ounce of energy I had. Anyways, let's talk about PhaseFest! It was an exciting event all around. Everyone was extremely gracious and kind to us. I'd like to personally thank the following totally awesome people for helping me carry drum crap: members of Pariah Piranha, goddess bless you for making load-in so frickin' mind-blowingly fast and painless it's unbelievable, other assorted OGO's, Claire, and Em for making moving stuff up and down the steps, through a totally packed crowd, and out the door again, completely painless. Yay tiny drums and lots of help!

Back to the fest itself. Loads of very different performances and people. Very cool. The band is thoroughly enjoying their goody bag courtesy of Riot Grrrl, Ink. Also - thanks for being such a sweet organizer and host, Mara Levi! God-dess & She get added to the official list of performers Tawni will not sing after...(and it's a short list..haha..so that means a lot!)

You may also notice these totally frickin' beautiful pictures taken by Alex Hickcox..who is never gonna stop getting invitations from me to come take pictures of us..ever again..seriously these photos are amazing (and I hear there's more that have yet to be organized/posted online...so keep checking back here for them).

And speaking of Alex's first official band invitation, it was to our Fantabulous CD release party last night at Fletcher's. It was such a nice turn-out...we really cannot express enough gratitude to everyone for all their support from the start of this band back in 2004 up through today...thanks for bearing with us as we traded up in membership and got our acts officially together. It was worth it...we hope you think so too! Pics from that show will be forthcoming (right Alex? ;) ) And now...we've got some super hot tickets for you. Mark your calendars...we haven't been back to the Recher since the time we only actually had 2 original songs...and we are very excited to return. The show's on Thursday, September 13. 7pm Doors. $7. All-ages. We've got tix in advance. We're playing along with Bearded Sword, Maddison (we saw your tagging of the merch table at Fletcher's last night), and Armed Elephant. Come out and rock out along with us for this one!

Metro Weekly Cover

Ah...so there's our dear drummer (me) on the cover of the current Metro Weekly along with Alex Voegele (with guitar), and K. Love the Infinite..both of whom were totally awesome to talk to during and after this shoot. The cover is in honor of PhaseFest, which goes down this weekend. Here's the cover story from this edition. We're very excited about the whole thing...and think it's going to be loads of fun. There's a diverse collection of music all three nights (it starts tonight, btw), and some other...shall we say very interesting demonstrations..which you can just go read about for yourself.

They also did a phone interview, and we have our own little interview section about OGO. I guess cell phones make it hard to hear the interviewee...b/c it should be that we sound something like The Donna's instead of The Madonna's...although what if there was a band composed of just various stages of Madonna...early "punk" Madonna with lace gloves, Blond Ambition Madonna, cut mommy Madonna...that would be sort of totally awesome (note to self: next band=The Madonna's). Anyway...don't worry, OGO hasn't changed membership (again)....this second picture is just from the inside pages of the feature story about PhaseFest in general (although it would be totally beautiful to have some sort of hip-hop stylings placed over one of our songs a-la-these guys over Blue Sky Traffic (as I mentioned in a posting about Hagerstown)).

We're the music interview in the current edition of Baltimore Gay Life...now if they'd only update the one online...I could point to it (if not, I will transcribe here at a later point in time)...in any event, go pick one up in person if you want a looksie right now.

Also in the August 2007 edition of Music Monthly under the Dear Readers section by Susie Mudd. Squint real hard at the list of handwritten-looking text and you can see us on line seven from the top of the list. They don't put full text online...it says:

"I recently turned onto this cool five women group called Odd Girl Out. They kick some major ass. The group includes Tawni on lead vocals, Bethany Petr does drums and sings, as do Eva Blackmer, Kristen Brzowsky on guitar, and Selena Benally also on guitar and vocals. They have just released their debut CD, Hurry Up and Wait which is available now.

They have won Battle of the Band contests. They have blown people away with their power pop punk music. Having been influenced by many great women rockers. Together they have created some cool stuff. Listen for their debut CD…it will rock you, too. They have gigged at all the major clubs in the region, and you can see them in Baltimore, Virginia, and they recently played in Toronto…"

Lessons learned:

Hagerstown is frickin' far away!

Verizon phone service does not work in the town of Hagerstown, which renders the GPS assistance from VZNavigator totally useless.

Hagerstown is hot as s**t! (and I mean literally hot...sweat causing my dollars not to work in the Coke machine hot. ew.)

We like air conditioning (a lot)

We really enjoyed talking to Blue Sky Traffic who were backing The Pham who, as a group, were totally awesome performers.

We also enjoyed the musical stylings of Dimestore Profit whose drummer Pat should, without a doubt, beg borrow and steal enough to get a set of DW's...and who frickin' thrilled me to pieces with their cover of a Darkness song.

Apparently Chad Taylor's dad attends musical events in Hagerstown with his other son's band and is incredibly nice...and helped me load my drums on the stage- which is totally awesome!

Apparently gays like Niel Diamond (or so we heard in an alley-way discussion we wished we'd missed)

We don't know anybody in Hagerstown.

Also - whenever anyone tells you to show up somewhere at 9am, you know, invariably, that you're gonna have to Hurry Up & WAIT!...but wait, we already learned that lesson!

..and well, you get the idea. Oh..one last thought - Hagerstown has the most swank McDonald's the world has ever known...complete with several flat-screen TV's, wi-fi, and a glass waterfall fixture. Now OGO takes a little tiny vacation while various OGO's venture out of town. We'll be back end of August with some not-to-be-missed shows!

Holy crap Adams Morgan is a swarming madhouse between 9 and bars-close-o-clock! We want to thank the DC Roller Girls for having us out to play their bout after-party! We enjoyed the plentiful mountains of waffle fries, the company, and the great energy brought by all. The only question remains why did my microphone smell so bad? Is it stored inside the carcass of some dead animal? Ick! Still-it was another thoroughly enjoyable show. Next week: BMX Battle of the Bands thing. Will OGO win this battle? The more ominous question: will OGO go bankrupt at the Hagerstown Prime Outlets after our set?

Sheffield & Firehouse Grill

So Wednesday evening we headed back over to Sheffield to help out a studio recording class. Basically the deal is you agree to go and let them do whatever the class is for, and then you can get a copy of the result. That's the exchange. We had some amazing pop-song/opera-style freestyling antics from Kristen (which Selena definitely caught on her camera phone and she should send to me immediately upon reading this). We had some King of the Hill theme song jamming from Eva on the bass. We got some drum and bass tracks down for Deserve, so hopefully that will turn into something we can eventually share with you. (Of course, we all know the reason I'm writing this at all is to get a pic in here of me with my tiny tiny drums. Ha.)

Then last night was a fun-filled evening with Sematic at Firehouse Grill. They'd asked us to come and play with them before they filmed their own show for an upcoming music video, and were then extremely friendly to us. Thanks guys! You're awesome. Apparently I always enjoy bands with siblings in them. Maybe b/c my first band in high school (that played actual songs instead of never-ending jams) had a set of brothers in it. James from Rome in a Day was there with a surprise acoustic set before we got started, and was awesome as well. Back in the old-school OGO days, we used to cover No One Knows (Queens of the Stoneage), and it was interesting to hear an acoustic guitar rendition of said song. Apparently James has a large GUITAR HERO repertoire! Yay Guitar Hero!

Also special thanks to Claire for hanging out with us pre-show whilst Tawni downed her taco salad, and to Jaime, Lindsey, & Anya for hanging out and rocking out with us during the show.

Roller Derby

...so roller derby is kinda wild. What a unique sport. What a unique place to play. The memories of middle school come flooding back when you see those sweet, sweet light fixtures on the walls. I personally only frequented roller rinks for a short window of time when they decided to allow roller blades. Something about the regular skate wheel setup leaves me flat on my face the second I try to move, but the in-line setup is ok.

Much thanks to the sound guy who managed to balance out the acoustics of such an odd setting. And of course, much thanks to the Charm City Roller Girls for having us out. We particularly enjoyed talking to the mascot for the Night Terrors. Sweet top hat and cane! The crowd was intense. I can't believe that many people are willing to risk their finger tips and other extremities sitting right up to the edge of the match. Crazy. Totally crazy.

All in all, good fun! This coming week we hit up a slightly different kind of roller girls event, the DC roller girls after party at Asylum. The party starts at 10pm on Saturday night. We'll be there with bells (since we probably can't play with wheels) on. There's no cover, but it's a 21+ event. Also this week, we'll be opening for Sematic at the Firehouse Grille in Virginia on Friday night. This one is also 21+, and has a $5 cover. We don't get down into VA and DC quite as often as we're out around MD, so if you're down in those lower spots, make sure you get out to see us.

Oh what a masterpiece of craptitude OGO Goes to Canada (EH!) was going to be! But my computer hates me. It won't save with my clever sound editing. It won't work with my slick widget on our page***. Whatever - time to give you some clips anyway - so here are the even more craptastic video clips from our Canada trip. I would also like to note that while there were many many more clips of great hilarity, I cannot bring myself to prove we are even more inappropriate as a band than you could possibly imagine - so here's the mostly acceptable stuff.
