Texas Governor Affirms Texas Sovereignty Under the Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution

On April 9, 2009, Rick Perry, the Republican Governor of Texas, held a press conference in which he said that the federal government has become oppressive and stated his unwavering support for the U.S. Constitution which guarantees the sovereignty of every individual state under the Tenth Amendment. Governor Perry called for the adoption of a resolution asserting the proper role of the federal government and the states as designed by the Founding Fathers.

The Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states the following:

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

Americans should welcome Governor Perry’s leadership in protecting the sovereignty of the great State of Texas and his determination to rein in the power seekers at the federal level of government.

We urge you to urge the governor of your state to join with Governor Perry in this essential move to restore constitutional rights to the states and to the people.

Sebelius lowballed donations from abortion doctor

It is extremely troubling that during Governor Sebelius' confirmation hearings before the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions, only one committee member, Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK), asked her questions related to the life issues. He asked two questions: One regarding the Obama administration's intention to rescind conscience protection for health care personnel, a matter of grave concern to Senator Coburn who is a practicing obstetrician, and another regarding whether HHS, under direction from President Obama, intends to reclassify the abortion drug RU-486 as "emergency contraception," thus removing it from Hyde Amendment restrictions that prevent taxpayer funding of abortions. Thank you, Senator Coburn.

In light of Sebelius' long standing pro-abortion position and her close relationship with Dr. George Tiller, a third trimester abortion practicioner, it is beyond strange that other committee members who are generally viewed as pro-life, failed to bring her strong abortion affiliations to light. Republican Senators Mike Enzi (R-WY), Judd Gregg (NH), Lamar Alexander (TN), Richard Burr (NC), Johnny Isakson (GA), John McCain (AZ), Orrin Hatch (UT), and Pat Roberts (OK) reportedly said nothing. The National Right to Life Committee Legislative Scorecard for the last Congress (110th) shows, in addition to Tom Coburn, that Enzi, Isakson and Roberts scored 100%, with Gregg, Alexander, Burr and Hatch getting it right 85% of the time. John McCain brings up the rear with a 66% pro-life score. The only Democrat committee member who claims to be pro-life is Bob Casey with 57%.

How is it that they could let the most pro-abortion Governor in America be confirmed as HHS Secretary without strong and public opposition?

HHS Comment Deadline is Fast Approaching

If you haven't sent your comments to HHS regarding President Obama's intention to rescind the Leavitt/Bush regulation enforcing protection of the rights of conscience of health care providers and institutions, please do so right away.

The comment period ends on April 9!

Protection for the rights of health care personnel to refuse to act in violation of their consciences must be retained in HHS regulations. No one should be threatened with job loss or any other type of discrimination because of their ethical, moral or religious beliefs.

The Department of Health and Human Services has published the following announcement in the Federal Register: Rescission of the Regulation Entitled "Ensuring That Department of Health and Human Services Funds Do Not Support Coercive or Discriminatory Policies or Practices in Violation of Federal Law." You can click on either the PDF or HTML version.]

The Leavitt/Bush regulation required any entity, including individuals, receiving federal funds through HHS to certify their compliance with federal laws protecting health care providers and personnel from discrimination because of their refusal to participate in or abet in any way the performance of abortion or any other medical actions they find morally or religiously objectionable.

Several federal laws protect the rights of conscience of health care providers. The Church Amendments and the Hyde/Weldon Amendment to the Labor/HHS annual appropriations bill are described in the Federal Register.

Parents who generate children through in vitro fertilization and decide to allow their "leftover" babies, who are currently frozen in liquid nitrogen tanks, to be killed through the process of extracting their stem cells, may do so at will, if Obama removes the Bush restrictions.
