But seriously, as we get ready to take '09 by storm, we're feeling a bit nostalgic and just want to take the time to look back over what we've done over the past year.

2008 was a tumultous, eventful, and amazing year for Powderburn, but it started off with mixed feelings. Lead guitarist and founding member Josh Klayman left the band to focus on an audio/sound engineer career. Taking his place in January was Houston native Eric Smith, whom many of you have had the dubious pleasure of meeting by now. He brought with him fresh song ideas, a crazy haircut, and the fastest fingers this side of the Rockies. We are certainly glad to have him around.

Eric's first real taste of the spotlight with the band came in March, when Powderburn took the stage for KLBJ's Local Licks program. We rocked out the stage at the since-closed (and sorely-missed) Rock City Icehouse, and KLBJ broadcasted the show live over the airwaves. We have the tapes, and there might be a live song put up on our MySpace in the near future, if Ken didn't spill Jager on them and ruin the whole thing.

We closed out the month of March in our usual fashion, by not playing Austin's stroke-fest SXSW, and instead playing three shows at the very artist-friendly and recession-proof Heart of Texas Festival. We played three places in three days, including the Guitar Hero outdoor stage in downtown Austin, where Patrick took place in a tournament briefly - long enough to be vanquished in the first round by an 8 year-old. Seriously.

After an April spent mostly writing new material, the time came to test it live, namely at the Jagermeister Spring Tour, featuring Hatebreed, Type O Negative, and 3 Inches of Blood! Good times, good times.

June was spent on the road and playing the afterparty for the Monster Rock Sing-Along done by the Alamo Drafthouse. We know that we were there and we played, but in the haze of alcohol and free cigarettes we only remember singing along to "Talk Dirty to Me" and shredding on plastic inflatable guitars.

After that drunken nonsense, it was good to get back to the controlled chaos of the Jagermeister Mayhem Festival in July, which was by far the finest moment in our lives. There was Slipknot, Disturbed, Dragonforce, Mastodon, Machine Head - you name a metal band that you love right down to your taint, and they were there, and we played with 'em! We hung out with our friend John Moyer from Disturbed, watched the Metal Mulisha throw down some Motorcross craziness, and even saw our buddy Jacob from 101X in Austin wheelchair-surf on the crowd. It's on YouTube. Go check it out, and check out us rocking in front of many thousands of sunburned, mosh-crazy San Antonians.

After that, the band settled down to the business of pre-production on the upcoming record, which is tentatively titled ONE FIX. Basically, we've spent the rest of the year finishing up the tunes, putting the tracks down, and working and re-working each one until it is a dose of metal perfection, all under the Jim Beam-addled ramblings. . . I mean . . .the expert direction of producer and ProTools ninja Paul Soroski.

We took a break long enough to accept Jagermeister's invitation to be VIP guests at the one-off Ozzfest show this year in Frisco, Texas, in August. We watched Metallica play a song off Death Magnetic for the first time, saw Zakk Wylde solo for like an hour during Ozzy Osbourne's set, and almost partied with Sevendust . (Good story, there.)

Since then, we've been busy little beavers in the studio and preparing to unleash ONE FIX sometime in early 2009. We in Powderburn would like to take this time to thank all of you for all your support during the last year, both live and online. We hope last year was as good to you as it was to us, and we hope to see you in the front row this year at our CD release party!

- Ken, Patrick, Greg, and Eric

Powderburnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06878381825356669498noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28689138.post-2543427670479380952008-12-12T17:59:00.001-06:002008-12-12T18:03:00.296-06:00Powderburn's Final ShowPowderburn to play final show of year

(Austin, Texas - December 10th)

After a long, intense year of recording, playing on shows like the Mayhem Tour, and incorporating a new lead guitarist, Austin-based POWDERBURN is preparing to wind down for the holidays and take a well-deserved break. However, because POWDERBURN knows there's no fans like their Austin fans, the band is setting up one final show for the hometown crowd.

The time and place for the last throwdown of '08 is December 20th, at the renowned Austin venue Emo's. So grab some friends and join the band for one last huge party . . . that is, before the one last huge party on New Year's Eve. Due to the fact that no member of Powderburn intends on being able to even stand upright on New Year's Eve, this is your last shot to party with the band and hear some great music.

Joining POWDERBURN for this end of year event are local favorites Deejer and One-Eyed Doll, two very different bands that nevertheless offer a great live show and serious melody and songwriting. "One of my favorite things about this show is who we're playing with", says drummer Patrick Swift, "Both bands are good friends of ours who we haven't really done shows with before, and I think they blend well with what we do. Prepare to be pleasantly surprised." Another band who mixes well and puts on a live show is Houston's own Lonestar Pornstar, who will also be playing with POWDERBURN for the first time.

As this is the final show for 2008, the band has planned some serious surprises, and believe that it will be worth your time to come and see just what they have in store for the end of the year.

The doors open at 8 PM, and it's worth your while to get there early. POWDERBURN and the other bands have prepared a little Christmas surprise for the first 100 people to come in the door, so do your makeup in the car on the way, and hit the drive-thru on your way down to Emo's. See you there!

http://www.powderburn.net/
www.myspace.com/powderburn

Powderburnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06878381825356669498noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28689138.post-79041678845001438452008-12-12T17:49:00.001-06:002008-12-12T17:52:23.616-06:00Powderburn to headline Dimefest in HoustonPowderburn to headline Dimefest in Houston

December is the month for not only buying presents for friends and family, but for taking a good look around and seeing what you can do for people in need during the holiday times. Austin-based metal band Powderburn is getting in the Santa spirit as they headline the 2nd annual event in Houston, Texas, which will be now and forever dubbed "Dimefest". This year's event will be this Saturday,December 13th, at the rock club FBI # 1.

"Dimefest" was chosen as the name for this event for two simple reason - it's ten cents to get in the door, and a cup of beer will cost you ten cents. The bands are donating their time and music, and the four kegs of beer have been donated by the venue.

Another connotation of the name is the universal love in the metal community for the legend known as Dimebag Darrell. What many people may not know is that he was into the giving spirit as well, as he worked with an amazing charity called Little Kids Rock. Little Kids Rock donates brand-new instruments to public schools, so today's kids can turn into tomorrow's concert violinists, Broadway pit performers, or maybe even rock stars. The list of other performers who have worked with LKR goes on and on, including Jason Newstead, Paul Simon, Neil Peart, Joe Satriani, Ringo Starr and Brad Delson of Linkin Park.

Ken Lockman, singer of Powderburn, states: "Being so close to the holidays, Powderburn felt it was good timing to do something for the kids. In this kind of situation, everyone wins - A good show, unbelievably cheap beer, and knowing you did something good for the kids, too!"

In Dime's honor, all the proceeds of the night will be donated to Little Kids Rock, with the blessings of all the bands involved. A local business, Destin Drywall and Paint, has also donated a Dimebag-style Dean Razorback Guitar, which will be raffled off and the proceeds given to Little Kids Rock.

The show starts at 7 PM, and joining Powderburn on the stage will be the following bands" Sounds of a Solemn Mind, Cavernous, Face Meets Pavement, Epic, Aerial Second, and Nocturnal Madness.

So if you're feeling the Christmas spirit, come out to FBI this weekend and have a good time for very cheap, and put an instrument in the hands of a kid who may just be the next Slash, Jason Newstead, or Joey Jordison! As Powderburn's bassist Greg Enkler says: "It's Dimefest, so at these prices you can't blame the recession - see you there!"

FBI #1 is on 11528 Jones Road in Houston, TX 77070, and the phone is (281) 807-4116.

www.powderburn.net
www.myspace.com/powderburn
www.destinconstruction.com
www.littlekidsrock.org

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Powderburnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06878381825356669498noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28689138.post-61401180820949653932008-10-15T17:06:00.007-05:002008-10-15T17:21:20.054-05:00Video from in the studio (drums)As you know we've been busy working on a new cd. The band is fortunate to have a sponsorship from the hallowed beverage of choice for metalheads everywhere, and JAGER is bringing the metal to Texas yet again.

POWDERBURN is pleased to announce that the band has two dates on this year's JAGERMEISTER MUSIC TOUR - May 28th and 29th with HATEBREED and 3 INCHES OF BLOOD. The 28th show will also feature fellow east coast natives, TYPE O NEGATIVE.

"Needless to say, this may be one of my favorite Jager tours yet!", says drummer Patrick Swift, "HATEBREED are legends of the scene and I've been a fan of TYPE O NEGATIVE since I first picked up drumsticks . . . this one's gonna be trouble!"

"It's always fun to play on a tour that features diverse bands. I've seen Hatebreed and Type O countless times and they both put on great, yet, vastly different shows. I think Powderburn will fit quite nicely, in our own way, among these bands" added singer/guitarist Ken Lockman.

May 28th, the band joins the JAGERMEISTER MUSIC TOUR in San Antonio at Sunset Station, and then makes the journey to El Paso for the show on the 29th at Club 101. POWDERBURN leaves the tour at that point, but will be swinging through Lubbock to play a headlining show on the way home, to be held at the Lone Star Events Center on May 30th.

For more info on the tour itself, go to www.jagermeistermusictour.com.
For more information about POWDERBURN, go to
www.powderburn.net or www.myspace.com/powderburn

Powderburnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06878381825356669498noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28689138.post-71626757827447393342008-03-18T16:08:00.005-05:002008-03-18T16:32:09.722-05:00Powderburn to play KLBJ’s (93.7) Local Licks Live
Powderburn to play KLBJ’s (93.7) Local Licks Live
Story from KLBJFM.COM

IT’S BACK! However also during this week another festival has been taking place for years as well. The Heart of Texas Rock Fest has been home to Austin-based metal band POWDERBURN for five years running, and this year is no exception!

As has become tradition, POWDERBURN will be headlining the Dimebag Darrell Memorial Metal night at Spill Bar on Wednesday the 12th at 1am. "This night is always a showcase for some of the finest the metal scene of Austin has to offer", says drummer Patrick Swift, "and we're proud to be associated with a night dedicated to the legend of our scene - so come on down and getcha pull!"

The band will be taking in the sights and sounds of the festival during the rest of the week, and return to the stage to headline not one more show, but both Friday and Saturday night. In addition Powderburn will also be playing the outdoor "Guitar Hero" stage on Thursday at 3:30pm. Friday's show marks POWDERBURN's return to their new home venue, the Rock City Icehouse in the Lincoln Village, and Saturday night brings the band to Merkaba, in Pflugerville, to close out another great night of music.

Singer/guitarist Ken Lockman said: "We love Texas Rockfest because every year they invite tons of unsigned rock and metal bands from all over the country and fans can see them all for free! No wristband, no cover charge.....just free."

For more info on the festival, as well as the complete schedule featuring over 150 band, check out the official website at:

www.texasrockfest.com

Powderburnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06878381825356669498noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28689138.post-62950736817330782572008-02-04T17:51:00.000-06:002008-02-12T10:58:49.151-06:00Big hometown show annoucement Powderburn's first official hometown show of 2008 will take place on Saturday, February 23rd at Rock City Icehouse in Austin, TX. Rock City Icehouse is a brand new rock club that opened at the beginning of February and has the potential to make a lasting impression on the Music Capitol of the world.

Singer Ken Lockman stated, "The second I walked into this club I felt at home. The place is laid out great, the stage is huge, the sound is perfect, there's plenty of free parking and wait until you see the barstools! I'm very excited about the 23rd. We're planning to put on one hell of a show. Rock City Icehouse could very well be the new Backroom". The Backroom was a legendary rock club in Austin for over 30 years that Powderburn performed at regularly and sadly closed it's doors in 2006.

Rock City Icehouse is convientely located by the Highland Mall in Lincoln Center. The band wishes to welcome Eric Smith, a Houston native formerly of Swinging Teresa, Pinhed, and Epic, to the fold and hopes that all our fans and friends will join us in doing the same.

Eric brings a new style and energy to the band, and serious soloist chops as well, and is looking forward to display them at the soon-to-be announced Powderburn comeback show in Austin. When asked to comment, he simply said "Live fast, play loud, and fuckin' SLAYER!". Grammatically challenged as he may be, rest assured the man can seriously rock a guitar.

Powderburn will be taking an undisclosed period of time off from touring and recording to acclimate Eric to the band, and write a series of new songs for an upcoming full-length release. "The writing sessions have already begun", says drummer Patrick Swift, " and I cannot believe how ridiculously well the new songs are coming out. We're getting heavier and faster - we just needed some new blood to get things heavy again!"

Be sure to check back to www.powderburn.net often for the announcement of the band's comeback show, and for everything you ever wanted to know about Eric. A bio page and a link to his MySpace will be added to the site in due course. I know every band that hates each other always says "it's mutual and we all still love each other, blah blah blah". Powderburn is like a big Mafia family - once you're in, you're in. Don't be surprised if you see Josh behind the soundboard or jamming a song onstage once in awhile, just like Joel Reyes (we can't get rid of him either, he's like herpes, but herpes that can play drums well, heh). But seriously, the Homegrown show is an ending of sorts, but don't be too sad for Josh. He's got a whole different career that he is VERY good at to look forward to, and he'll still be around, begging you to buy his poor ass a crown and coke.

Secondly, and very importantly - let me assure you of this in a large font so you know I'm serious - POWDERBURN IS NOT BREAKING UP! We have had some advance notice of Josh's wishes for some time, and we've been going through the process of auditioning guitarists not only to find someone who can play well, but will fit right into this crazy family we have going on. We will have some news on that front in the very near future, so keep checking back.

We thank everyone who commented and wished Josh well. I know it means a lot to him, and it definitely means a lot to us that so many of you care. So, rock on, we'll see you on the 5th, and we will have a lot to celebrate about in '08! Later!

- Patrick

Powderburnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06878381825356669498noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28689138.post-23075752214949106122007-12-03T15:19:00.000-06:002007-12-03T16:03:27.730-06:00POWDERBURN PARTS WAYS WITH GUITARIST

POWDERBURN PARTS WAYS WITH GUITARIST
(December 3rd, 2007)

It is with a heavy heart that Powderburn makes the following announcement - lead guitarist Josh Klayman is parting ways with the band. The following is a personal note from Josh to the fans that have supported the band that he helped create many years ago:

Hey everyone, I just wanna let you all know that the 5th of December will be my final show with Powderburn at the Red Eyed Fly. It's been almost 9 years since I started this thing and its been awesome. However, I fit into this industry on the production side of things as well as the performance side and I'd like to give some other avenues a try that I don't have time to do while in Powderburn. I will still be playing live with most likely a couple bands so I'll keep everyone posted on where to catch me live in 2008! I really wanna thank everyone who ever came and saw us, bought me a beer, sang a song with me onstage, bought a cd or shirt, and basically everyone who helped us in any way.

See you on the 5th!!!

Josh

The remaining members of Powderburn, Greg Enkler, Ken Lockman, and Patrick Swift stated the following. "Learning that Josh wanted to leave was a hard thing to understand but over the last few months we've spent numerous hours talking about this and while it's still extremely sad to see him go, we all believe it's for the best thing for everyone. One thing all 4 of us have always agreed on is that things happen for a reason and we believe this change is no exception. It goes without saying though that whoever replaces him with have some big shoes to fill, both musically and personally."

As Josh stated the final Powderburn show with him in the lead guitar role will be the 101X Homegrown show at the Red Eyed Fly in Austin, Texas, on December 5th.
