I haven't finished much of anything in a long time, but I have been making little bits and pieces of progress on lots of progress. One of these days its going to all fall into place at once and I'll have a big pile of finishes. I don't know when that will be, but someday! LOL. Part of my lack of recent posts is being away from home and my internet connection a lot lately, and the other part is an extreme facebook addiction when I have been near my internet connection. I am thinking about blogging, but it just hasn't been happening. LOL

I've been working on Bea's fairy tale blocks. Blocks 1-4 are completed, and the other 4 are traced and waiting to be stitched. They still need the embellishments, but I'm not adding those until the top is quilted.

More tomorrow, hopefully.

Two Christmas in July Swaps - Sent

I participated in two Christmas in July Swaps.

The second, was hosted by Karen. The partner I sent to was Kimberly. In this swap, we had a specific list of things to send to our partner. Among things that Kimberly said she liked were Scotty Dogs, fuschia and candy, so I tried to acommodate her preferences in what I sent her. This is her pile of goodies:

Kimberly made me a beautiful stitchery (awesome job for her first stitchery!) which I love (I told her I love the retro-ish christmas stuff, and love snowmen, so this is perfect), she sent a great fabric and buttons that I love, a yummy scented candle and a fabulous papercrafted banner that will look great on my mantel at Christmastime. She also included a great magazine that I didn't have (which I forgot to put in the picture). The other things on the list are still under constructions, and I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of the rest of my goodies. Will update you all when they arrive

So, time to update on my crazy life. Last time I posted, my Dad was undergoing pherisis for TTP, and the doctors were trying to figure out what was going on with him. Long story short, on May 22nd, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, of unknown origin (they couldn't pinpoint the source because it was so advanced). He went home on oxygen for a couple of weeks and had chemo as an outpatient. Then he got sick with pneumonia, spent a few days in the hospital and then went home on June 18th, with the intention of Hospice at home startign the next day. But on the morning of June 19th, with Mom, my nephew, and a friend of my nephew's at home with him, Dad passed away. The weeks since then have been busy, with my brothers and I helping Mom as much as possible, and trying to just get over our grief. The good thing about it all was that Dad passed away without suffering from pain, it went quickly, and he was at home (like he wanted.

During this time, I've also been working quite a bit, and finding that I am loving this job.

At home, Thing One is at day camp this week (and I'm enjoying that break!), and Thing Two is happy to have me to himself for a while. I'm working on sorting out some of my scrap bins...I've been cutting strips into various widths and sticking them in ziploc bags according to Bonnie's system. I've also been working on some block of the month stitchery projects that I'm behind on. No pictures of those yet. I've completed projects for two Christmas in July Swaps, both of which were mailed last week. I'll share pictures of those once they arrive at their destinations (one here in the US, the other far far away).

I did complete this tote bag back in early June. I like it a lot, but it is a little on the small side for me to use as my everyday bag. I also made myself a lunch bag for work. I'll get pictures of that to share tomorrow.

Linda's Christmas in July Swap

Last night when I got home from work, I had a fat package waiting for me from Finland! Lucky me, my swap partner in Linda's Christmas in July Swap was
Jeanette In my package were all these wonderful goodies: An adorable Santa gift bag, two beautiful crocheted potholders and a hook to hang them on. a set of purse handles, two spools of thread, a measuring tape in an adorable little tin (perfect for in my purse!), a new pair of scissors and a small needlecase (perfect for in my little bag of stitching that comes to work with me!). Thank you so much, Jeanette! And thanks to Linda and Stephanie for organizing this swap!!

I can hardly believe that it is has been two months since I last blogged. So much has happened to keep me away, but now I hope to be back on a more regular basis. I'll tell you all about it in the next few days. At them moment, I'm having some computer troubles...my laptop's space bar sticks which makes it impossible to type anything, but I've got a new keyboard waiting to be installed (fingers crossed).

Retreat Weekend

Two weekends ago was my quilting groups annual retreat. We had lots of fun, and as you will see, we did a lot of sewing!
We all did a pattern called Contra Dance, which was fun. Basically you sew a four patch quilt like this:

Then you cut it apart on the diagonals, like this:

You rearrange it like this:

And then you sew it back together, and add borders. Then it looks like you pieced it on the diagonal. Pretty cool, huh?

Slow but steady...

I have in fact been working on a number of projects, just in small increments, and without much posting. I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel though, so all this craziness here is about to slow down (I hope). I haven't had many actual finishes, but I am working on block of the month projects, secret swaps, a project for Thing Two and a few other things. Hopefully I'll have lots of COMPLETED things to share very soon.

Dad is still in the hospital, he is on his 19th day of plasma pherisis, and he is improving a bit, but not as much as I've been hoping for. Today I went and donated blood for the first time since I was in high school. I do plan to keep doing that.

The quilt pictured above is the one I finished for the neighbor girl a few weeks ago. I got a lovely thank you note from her Dad...apparently she is very happy with it, and so I am pleased.

I've been at a lot of training classes for work, and I've also been away from home a bit in between. Last weekend (okay, two weekends ago now, the 1-2-3 of May) I was at a quilting retreat in Vermont...I'll be sharing pictures from that in my next post just as soon as I can get myself a little bit organized.

Finished Projects.

Last weekend I worked on a few projects, and actually finished 3 of them (2 UFOs, one started and finished last weekend).

First, I finished this UFO. I'm embarrassed to say that I posted a picture of this quilt, only lacking a binding on Sept. 6, 2007. Yes, it took me more than a year and half to get the binding on it. But it is now finished, and donated to my guild's community service project.

Then I finished this UFO, someone gave me the panel, then I found matching backing fabric when a local shop was going out of buinsess, and on another trip to another store, I found the ruffled binding. I quilted it a while ago, but finishing the end of that ruffled binding perplexed me. Last weekend I decided to just do it, and technically, the close of the two binding edges is not right, but it IS finished. This one went to the NICU at UConn Health Center.

Finally, I did my crayon challenge for guild. The two colors of crayons that I had were cerulean blue and sepia. We were able to add one color (I interpreted as one fabric, some people used multiple fabrics in the third color family, but whatever). I used the split nine patch pattern that I've seen all over blogland for a while, and I made this:

Tomorrow, I go to my quilters weekend in Vermont with my non-guild group. Woo Hoo!
We get to stay in the shop as late as we want to sew, then we get yummy meals at the restaurant in the inn next door, a nice bed to sleep in and lots of laughs with our friends! Just perfect! I need to toss some clothes in a bag, choose some projects to work on and head out to Vermont after my Med Certification class tomorrow morning.

I've not gotten too much sewing done lately because my dad has been in the hospital for the last 10 days. It took them a while, but they finally determined that he has an enzyme deficiency which is relatively uncommon. To treat him, he has to have a 1-8 week long treatment of plasma pherisis, where all the plasma in his blood is exchanged for donor plasma. Anyway, this daily treatment uses 16 or 17 pints of blood plasma every day (plus he's still having a pint tranfused nearly every day). He's getting much better, but not well enough to go home yet. The sheer amount of blood that is required for this treatment is just astounding to me...so today I am going to ask each and every one of you to please consider donating a pint of blood if at all possible. It has been years since I donated blood, but now I am planning to start doing so on a regular basis (the next bloodmobile here in town is next week, and DH and I will both be there) I am so grateful to everyone who has donated blood so that my father can have this treatment which will hopefully be life-saving for him that I now feel I need to return the favor. If you have never donated blood, or if it has been a while, please consider it. If for some reason you can't donate, please consider asking your loved ones to do so. And if you do donate blood, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart!

Spring Swap

May Kristin sent me an email yesterday that the Spring Swap package I sent to her has arrived! She hasn't posted on her blog yet, probably because she is about to go on a trip, but thats okay, I can finally share what I made for her!! I sent a tote bag, a little wall quilt, a pincushion and some sugary goodness: Peeps and Pez.

This little wall quilt pattern was in the most recent Australian Homespun Magazine (those of you in Australia probably have had a couple of issues since this one, because we seem to get them with a delay). I decided not to use the little alphabet border that was part of the pattern.

This pincushion was from a tutorial that I saw on a blog somewhere a while ago (sorry, I don't remember where) and I used a DVD as the template for the circle.

And the totebag was one of those patterns that I recently ordered from Australia. The pattern is from the Rivendale collection. This was VERY hard to give away, I really wanted to keep it for myself!!

Spring Swap

Yesterday while I was at work, my DH sent me a picture of the pile of mail! Why in the world did he do that? I wondered to myself, until I realized that he was showing me that my Spring Swap package had arrived! I was so happy. Well, that was at about 1PM, and after work I had to go directly to my daughters dance recital dress rehearsal, so I didn't get home to see my goodies until almost 10 PM!

My package came from Marit in Norway. Inside, there were several adorable springy things:

This is a little birdhouse and bird on a stick. I'm going to stick this in the soil of a plant on my dining room table. That sounds like a good excuse to go and get a hyacinth of daffodil plant for myself, right?

Next is this beautiful bucket/bag has a gorgeous stitchery design on the front and an adorable springy fabric on the inside. Marit did such a nice job on the stitchery! Maybe I'll put a vase of flowers inside of it?

And then there is the chicken! Is this knitted chicken not the cutest thing ever? This is one of those things that I am going to sit on my shelf in my sewing room and smile every time I see it. It looks to me like Marit knitted it and then felted it because it has that fuzzy felted look. So cute.

Marit also included a beautiful postcard and some yummy chocolates, which I have already eaten! Thank you so much for the wonderful goodies, Marit! I love them all.

Not sewing

Sigh. No sewing to report on. Remember my plan to bind and wash that quilt and give it to the little girl on Monday or Tuesday? Forget it...that went out the window. I have to go to three days of training for 8 hours this week (Mon-Tuesday-Wed) this week and next. No problem I figure. HA! I went for my training yesterday, and I was wiped out by the end of the day! I had such a headache from eye strain that it wasn't even funny. When I went to the eye doctor a bit more than a year ago, he suggested that I might want to consider bi-focals now that I am (ahem) over 40. Ha ha, very funny I thought. But it is becoming more and more obvious, espcially when I do embroidery while watching TV, that I need to go get the bifocals. Yesterday in training, trying to look back and forth between the powerpoint presentation, and the handouts (and coupled with the sitting down all day, which I never do) really did me in. When I got home, I made dinner, straightened up a bit, and fell asleep almost immediately. So none of that binding on the quilt got done.

Today, training was a lot more physical: we learned about how to restrain someone having a violent outburst and how to protect ourselves. Let me just say that if one of these guys in my care ever decides to hurt me, I'm probably going to be in trouble! I'm exhausted. No sewing is going to happen tonight either.

I need to get Thing One's costumes together: Tomorrow I have to go straight from training to the first Dress Rehearsal for the dance recital (we have four shows, and each show has a separate Dress Rehearsal, plus there is a technical rehearsal for certain numbers that we also need to attend). There goes the next 11 days. I'm exhausted just thinking about it.

An emergency Quilt.

Note: Don't read this post if you are a perfectionist, member of the quilt police, or prone to panicking about quilts that are not done 'properly'.

I am furiously working on an emergency quilt. Normally I keep several finished quilts on hand so that I can give one away if there is a quick need. But this weekend, I found out about a little girl in the neighborhood whose Mom died on Friday. This girl is almost 9 years old, and a friend of my children. All the quilts I have on hand are more baby/toddler size and style. So I had to come up with an idea, quick. I pulled out several unfinished tops and asked Thing One to pick a top that she thought the girl would like. She chose the Scrappy Bargello Quilt that I have been waiting to finish. My plan was to add some pieced words in the border, but fine, I'll finish this top in the next few days for the neighbor girl.

So I found some bright and cheerful backing for the top. I had put narrow lime green borders on it, but it still really needs a wider border. BUT, I need to quilt it quickly and on my quilting frame. But the frame is set up at only half width, and that means that if I add borders, it will be too wide to mount on the frame. Well okay, I can just leave it with the narrow lime green borders and call it good. That will still work. So I mounted the quilt on the frame and started quilting. Uh oh. Oops.

If you've quilted on a frame, you can see the problem I have: the quilt is still too wide for the size of the frame because the machine carriage is all the way to the end, and the needle doesn't reach to the edge of the quilt. I suppose that I would have realized that was going to happen had I actually MEASURED, which I didn't. Oh well. I can think of something right? So I quilted the center of the quilt and didn't quilt the borders at all. I'll do those later on the regular machine with the walking foot.

I finished quilting, found some binding fabric (hot pink, per Thing Ones specifications), ready to do some stitching in the borders with the walking foot. It was a great idea. The part that was NOT a great idea was when I put my thumb under the needles while the machine was running. I didn't realize I did it until I had searing pain in my thumb. At that point, I realized that the needle was in my fingernail and I couldn't pull my finger out from under it. After a small panic, I managed to get my thumb out without gushing blood all over the quilt. Eventually I got myself cleaned up, stopped hyperventilating and calmed down enoough to go near the machine again.

The quilt is quilted, the binding is on and waiting to be handstitched. Yes, the borders are a little bit wavy. If they were wider, I would have cut them narrower to minimize the waviness (like I said, don't read if you are squeamish about incorrect quilting procedure!) I know that solution works because, well, I've done it before. But I couldn't really make them narrower than the 1 1/2" they already are. So she's going to have a slightly wavy edge on her quilt. Somehow I doubt she'll notice.

Tonight I will finish the handstitching and wash the quilt. Then tomorrow after I go to the wake, I'll drop the quilt off at her house and come home and cry for this poor child, her Dad and her Grandma. Thank goodness that the family has Grandma living with them to help them out.

Block of the Month Progress

I'm trying to get caught up on all the beautiful block of the month projects that are available in Blogland... and in the past few days, I caught up with two of them.

First, Verandah Views. I have January, February and March's blocks complete. Today I printed April's block and have it ready to stitch this weekend, hopefully. I'm not doing the sashing strips on these until I have a better idea of how the whole project is going to look. The pictures are not good because it was very cloudy and gray outside today, and if I waited for more sunshine, who knows how long it would be before I got another chance to post!

Next up, is Christmas Wish. Here are the first three blocks. When I shop hopped two weekends ago in Vermont I bought the fabrics for the strips. I'm very pleased with these fabrics, and they aren't normally 'my' colors. I'm looking forward to the next block sometime next week.

I'm also working on my Spring Swap package. I'll be mailing it on Friday, but I have some last minute tasks to complete before then. Maybe I'll post some sneak peeks over the weekend, but I can't show the whole thing until my partner receives her package. And I'm mailing it to a country that I've never mailed to before.

The next two weeks are going to be crazy busy here in the Quilting in Connecticut family. I start training for my job on Monday and Thing One, Thing Two and DH (aka The Big Thing) have dance recital the weekend of the 18th, so we have extra practices and five dress rehearsals between now and then. Oh, and Easter too. I hope I get some time to sew in there somewhere or I might go a little bit nuts. But I promise that once the recital is over, I will be here more often.

Busy stitching

I haven't been posting, but I have been stitching. Life is very busy right now.

One thing I've been up to in my absence is getting a job. I have not had a job since I was pregnant with my 12 year old, and DH and I decided that this would be a good time to find a part time job. I am going to be working as a Residential Program Worker in a group home for developmentally disabled adults. There are four men living in the house and the deal is that I will be one of the people that helps them with the day to day tasks such as cooking, cleaning, personal care, driving them to doctors appointments and their day programs, participating in recreational activities with them, etc. I'm looking forward to starting, but first I need to finish up all the pre-employment stuff. I've been to a medical exam, drug test, physical test to see if I can lift, walk, carry, bend, etc. I'm working on getting my public service drivers license. I've been thru background tests, including being fingerprinted. I still need to complete classroom training, defensive driving class, CPR and first aid class, medication administration certification and some other stuff that I can't even remember. But I start training classes in less than two weeks. I think this job is going to be fun.

Earlier this week, Thing Two had surgery. He needed a lot of dental work and wouldn't cooperate with either of the dentists that we tried to use. So he had it all done under anesthesia, and we are relieved that it is over.

In the meantime, I'm trying to get stuff straightend out here at home so things can run smoothly while I am in training. I've also been to the accountant to work out the tax filing.

This little quilt (it is like 8X10) is from the Vermont Shop Hop. When we went to one of the shops, she gave us the little printed panel with the phrase on it along with the pattern for the little quilt. I made the strips slightly bigger. This is going to hang in my sewing room when I ever get it cleaned up. I'm going to make a couple more of these for some friends, but I'll probably embroider the phrase instead of using a printed one.

I finished my Noah's Ark project. I had a bit of a challenge getting the parts together. I must have cut something the wrong size along the way, but I solved the problem by adding a couple extra strips to make it all fit together. It looks kind of lumpy, and in a couple places it is, but thats because I refused to quilt thru the embroidery. In the end I'm very happy with how it came out...very cute! Thank you Lynnette!!

In addition to these things, I've been working on my Spring Swap (can't show it), pay it forward gifts (can't show those yet either) and a couple other little things that I'll share another day.

Goodies in the mail!

Yesterday was one of those great mail days, I had a lovely goody in the mail all the way from Australia. A week or so ago, I got an email from Rose that I was the winner of a giveaway on her blog. She has two new patterns out for a seasonal sampler. One contains fall/winter, the other contains spring/summer and lucky me, I have all of them! Take a look here to see them. I'm going to get started on the spring one this weekend. But first, I need to work on my items for Linda's Spring Swap. I'm gathering my fabrics for that project now. Maybe I'll share a sneak peek tomorrow.

Happy Birthday, Thing Two!

Happy Sixth Birthday, Big Boy! Time really flies, it is hard to believe that he is six already, but there ya go! We filled his bedroom with balloons this morning (and now DH and I are lightheaded from blowing up six dozen balloons!) and we are taking him out for lunch today.

Great Customer Service

Since I like to complain when I receive lousy customer service, I also like to commend businesses that provide excellent customer service.

Tonight, I need to tell you how happy I am with Bee Sew Whimsical in Australia. I've wanted some specific Australian patterns for a while, but I've been a bit apprehensive but ordering from another country was a bit intimidating. I ordered three patterns on February 25th (which was the 26th there) and they arrived today, March 3. That was fast. Not only that, Darlene included a bonus little stitchery pattern and a yoyo! Great Job, Darlene! Thank you, and the next time I want a pattern or something from Australia, you'll be one of the first places I look for it!

At the same time, I also should mention Mrs. Martin's Quilt Shop. Karen is also in Australian shop owner and I've ordered from her two times in the past and also shipped very quickly and is always very friendly.

So feel free to go ahead and order from either of these shops anytime you feel an urge to stock up on some of the great Australian patterns out there!

Triangles finished

Today I finished the triangles for Judy's Bears in The Farmhouse Quilt Along.
Other than that absolutely nothing is going on quilt-wise. Maybe tomorrow.

Lousy Week

Remember how I said Thing Two was scheduled for surgery on Tuesday? We had waited FOUR MONTHS for the surgery to be scheduled. When we got the date, I told DH, "I have a feeling that something is going to happen and the surgery won't happen that day". Well, woman's intuition is always right. Thing Two was sick all weekend with a bug that has been going around here. And I just KNEW. Ugh. So on Monday, I called the surgeons office, who sent me to the pediatrician. The pediatrician said "You need to reschedule, he's too congested". Ugh. So we are rescheduled for the fourth week of March.

In the meantime, I'm still stitching. I've got all the Noah's Ark blocks done except for the Ark, which I hope to get done this weekend. Then I'm going to start with all the February blocks from the stitcheries I've gathered. I also need to make all those half square triangles for Judy L's Bears in The Farmhouse.

The other day I got an email from someone at our local newspaper. They have a section on their website where they link to local bloggers of interest and they post a link every time those bloggers have a new post. Apparently someone at the paper noticed my blog and they would like to link to me. Now I have to decide if I want to do that or not. Does anyone else's local paper do this?

Grrr...another busy stressful week, and there is more stress to come, Thing Two is having surgery next week. Please keep him in your thoughts on Tuesday. He is having major dental work done, and he needs to be put under general anhestesia for them to do the things that need doing.

In the meantime, Amy, I do have the information you asked for about the 'banned quilts', but the magazine is at the other house. Will post it on Sunday for you.

In this picture are the fabrics I have chosen for Judy L's Bears in the Farmhouse Quilt Along. My fabric choices might change slightly when I get going on this, but these are my choices at this point.

Last weekend,I managed to get the top together from the Capricorn Quilts Block of the Month. If you have a keen eye, you may have noticed that I used the same exact setting for these blocks as I did for my Solids Challenge Quilt a few weeks ago.

I did two more of the Noah's Ark blocks, now I need to tackle the last few (3 I think)and get that top together.

Well today I am just flabbergasted. Check
this out. Censorship is alive and well here in the US, and it doesn't makes sense. Of course I still haven't seen this issue of the magazine, because somehow my subscription is screwed up and I have to call the customer service department and ask them to find my issue EVERY time.

I guess this is just yet another thing to add to me "Why I hate Joann Fabrics" List.
