Talking newcomers

Spring practice has wrapped and it’s time to focus on upcoming summer workouts and August preseason camp. Let’s start with this: which newcomer to you foresee delivering the largest impact? I’m going wide receiver-heavy right now with junior college transfer Wayne Bonner and true freshman Aaron Dobson. Yes, I’m leaving out Huntington’s C.J. Crawford for now, but that’s more because his position is uncertain.

It’s been the talk of the town since news broke early Saturday morning. What are your thoughts on last weekend’s arrests of Darius Marshall and DeQuan Bembry? It’s a tough subject but deserves banter as evidenced by that is the lone thing I’ve been asked about for two days. Innocent until proven, of course, but what are your reactions? Conditions are ideal and Legion Field predictably is nearly empty about 10 minutes from Marshall-UAB kickoff. Not much pre-game news beyond Chubb Small starting at tailback and Chad Schofield replacing Josh Evans at left guard.

Chad Schofield tentatively will start at left guard in place of Josh Evans Saturday at UAB, according to Marshall football coach Mark Snyder at his weekly press conference. Right guard Jimmy Rogers and right tackle Daniel Baldridge also are expected to earn extended playing time.

Edwards Stadium snowed out

Friday night’s scene appears promising for a true ‘White-Out’ for Marshall-Cincinnati. Edwards Stadium’s East Side student section is all-white and tailgaters in the West Lot were snowed out. I questioned a foursome wearing off colors and they assured me that it merely was tailgating gear; they were all pulling on white for the game. For those who can’t be here or folk who can access this blog via your crazy cell phones, let’s hear final thoughts pre-game.

Comments, questions on big win over Southern Miss

Humbly welcoming your comments on Marshall’s upset victory at Southern Miss. This wasn’t a fluke. Despite ill-timed penalties and turnovers, the Thundering Herd dictated through four quarters. Still, Southern Miss aided the landmark win with its share of miscues, but bottom line, few if any expected Marshall to stand tall at 3-1 entering West Virginia week. Again, just throwing it out there. Good or not so much, what are your impressions of this young season and the program overall? Thanks in advance for the response.

Update from “The Rock,” venue of today’s Marshall-Southern Miss matchup. It’s getting eerily dark here and radar indicates two to three inches of rain and dime-sized hail could be heading toward Hattiesburg, Miss. Actually heavy rainfall just started as I'm typing at 2:52 p.m. (EST). This could be a long day with potential lightning delays.

Glasco, Graham out for season

Breaking news from Mark Snyder’s Tuesday press conference – both defensive tackle Montel Glasco and tight end Maurice Graham are out for the season with injuries. Glasco will redshirt again and have a sixth year of eligibility, but Graham does not have a redshirt, meaning he’ll be a senior next season. Cornerback Zearrick Matthews remains two weeks away from his return. Tight end Cody Slate and strong safety Ashton Hall, meanwhile, are back from respective injuries and will practice today. Wide receiver Chuck Walker’s status remains uncertain.

As for the game, I'm expecting a high-scoring matchup with Marshall picking off Arkelon Hall a few times en route to a 38-28 win. Cody Slate and Ashton Hall remain game-time decisions, meanwhile. Slate is more likely to play than Hall.

OK, so let’s make this a weekly deal. Please feel free to give me your Marshall predictions with a score and analysis. I’ve got a hit-or-miss feel for this game. Either Memphis quarterback Arkelon Hall will be intercepted two or three times and Marshall comfortably wins in the 34-24 range, or Hall will throw for about 350 yards and about four TDs in a 38-31 Tigers win.

Today’s setting at sold-out Camp Randall Stadium is ideal. Both Wisconsin and Marshall fans answered their wake-up calls and were tailgating in unison in a festive, friendly setting reminiscent of Tennessee and Kansas State. As for football, as earlier reported tight end Cody Slate and strong safety Ashton Hall are not expected to play for the Thundering Herd today.

Some early thoughts on Wisconsin following Tuesday head coach press conferences with Marshall’s Mark Snyder and Wisconsin’s Bret Bielema. Yes, P.J. Hill is an elite college football running back, but backups Zach Brown and John Clay are more than capable. Brown is a change-of-pace speed back and Clay, a 6-foot-2, 237-pound freshman, could develop into a fourth quarter hammer. Little was asked of quarterback Allan Evridge in his debut last week, and more of the same can be expected against the Thundering Herd with a trip to No. 21 Fresno State looming. What are your thoughts on No. 11 Wisconsin?

Game day festivities are under way on this muggy afternoon at Joan C. Edwards Stadium. The paratroopers’ fly-in was executed to perfection, the band was on its game and the entire senior class led the team out as team captains. Marshall football is under way, but the actual football wasn’t an ideal kickoff with a Thundering Herd three and out. The defense, however, is impressive early.
