Change

Things have changed. I have changed. I no longer think the old thoughts that seemed to follow me everywhere. I have raised new questions about myself and my life. I may have found something new which has caused these changes in my outlook.

So what has changed? What I am going to say is something which could be nothing more than nonsense but it is my nonsense and my nonsense is worth thinking about. I have always accepted the dichotomy of matter and spirit but the thought has occurred to me that perhaps there is no dichotomy and that matter and spirit are merely gradations of the same thing?

This might not sound earth-shaking as it is but to me this kind of nonsense seems to make sense to me now. If there is no difference between matter and spirit and the only differentiating quality is one of subtlety or fineness, then it must be possible to demonstrate spirit the way matter is easily demonstrated.

Virtual Machine Dreams

Virtual Machines are running around my mind and it seems to me that there is too much information to be ingested and digested before I can become productive with them. They do promise a great deal of flexibility and freedom one of which is the ability to try different guest Operating Systems on your desktop. I have a windows box and trying a different one is a breeze with virtualization.

What I would like to do is to have some kind of Seaside app in a virtual machine and just allow it to run in is own environment without any problem with others that I might try. I had a linux box before which did proxying for my Seaside website running on another box (windows). I got it to run but I could only one server on it. I could not get it to run the virtual hosts.

Anyway, here's Cagayan de Oro City with another one: Cagayan de Oro City. My Cebu City site has made pr1, surprise, surprise. Dumaguete is still in the boondocks as far as Google goes but Dumaguete has made some headway.

Dream of dreamers and lazy people

I suppose that I am one of the dreamers, one of the lazy ones who keep on dreaming up of ideas to organize the world without having to run for elections. The thing is if I for elected office out of my own desire to set the world right then I would have to campaign to people who only want to get coddled and I would have to spend money. Not having that I would have to accept the money of interest groups and lobbies who would surely want to get their money's worth when I got elected. Then would my dreams of utopia go out the window.

This is something that happens again and again. Every had is tied to something, beholden to someone or some group.

A lazy man's utopia

I could dream and pretend that all I needed to do was to lay on my back and think nice thoughts and imagine that this was all that is need to conjure up the ideal world. This is the way to the lazy man's utopia, a world that exists only in dreamland, something that waits in the wings of a cosmic play and never gets called because other people dream much more loudly or more intensely. The more intense dream gets realized while the lazy man's dream remains a figment of his hopeless imagination and never takes root in the fresh ground of reality. A greedy man intent on accumulating wealth beyond what he can spend or consume will realize his greedy dreams and he will lay his grubby little hands on the wealth of this universe because his dreams of wealth are more focused and more intense than the lazy dreams of the utopian fool who dreams but does not act on his dreams.

Ideal vs Real

Reality always shoots down the ideal. What may appear to be ideal to the mind very quickly gets in trouble with what is already real. Consider an idea trying to take root, it always gets shouted down by the myriad ideas already flourishing or trying to maintain their existence in the minds of the majority. One could say that Reality is the concrete-ized version of an Idea in its infancy. Enthusiasm is the nursemaid of infant ideas while Frustration is its evil twin.If Enthusiasm keeps Frustration at bay and protect the infant Idea from possible infanticide, then may the idea grow strong into maturity as Reality.

Reality is rigid and hates change. Any change is always cataclysmic and Reality opposes it with all its might. Volcanoes erupt with violent upheavals rearranging the face of a planet and when the event is done, new land is created where life forms flourish. From the violent clash of ideas come new knowledge and understanding ushering in new Realities. Is Ching's World a new reality?

One might say it is a fledgeling idea trying to maintain its precarious existence in Reality. Millions of websites vie for the attention of visitors eager to find something new. Does Ching's World present something new? Perhaps. Perhaps not. One has to dig deeper into its inner depths to discover the treasure hidden beneath.

A nice, simple life

I think that people really do not need so much in order to have a good life. Having friends and relatives to keep them through rough times are pretty much what they need to have a satisfying life. I know that man's desires makes him miserable but this also makes him strive to achieve more and to become better and has been responsible for the many advancements that we see in the world today.

It is when the basic needs are not met that we begin to see the seeds of upheavals. The great advancements in music, literature, architecture and art that characterized the reign of the French Monarchs obscured the fact that the great majority of the population had a misrable life. When told that the masses had no bread to eat, the Emptress Marie Antoinette was reputed to have said: "Let them eat cake". This signifies how far the perception of the royalty and aristocracy was from the reality of ordinary mortals.

Even today, this same disparity in how the world is viewed has allowed good intentions to fall by the wayside in the light of the desire to keep advancing forward. It is common knowledge that the productive capacity is there to feed the world's population yet, that is nothing more than a statistic on a page. Reality has not brought that page to the mouths of those that need it the most.

Rights of women and children

In times past and even in some societies women and children do not enjoy the same privileges as men. Even the great United States had to undergo a painful transformation before Voting Rights could be afforded to women. In fundamentalist Muslim countries women still wear the traditional chador which covers the body completely together with the veil which only has opening for the eyes. Nowadays in developed countries women and children's right are protected by law and corporal punishment is no longer the right of parents.

In Asian countries women who bring dishonor to their families by marrying a man they deem to be unsuitable can be a cause for punishment which can include death. Morality is strictly enforced and sexual misconduct can have grave consequences for the womon which brings us the question of what happens to the male partner of an errant woman? The punishment for a woman is much more dire and grave.

The dictum, 'Children should be seen and not heard' is often quoted to admonish the younger members of society. Failure to adhere to this principle can lead to tongue-lashing and in many cases a good belting. The traditional method of imposing discipline is very simple and very direct: 'don`t make me angry or you will suffer the consequences and you only bring it on yourself'. This is an extension of the 'Might is right' theory which is still being practiced today. Utopia should include respect for the rights not only of minorities but also women and children.

An ordinary life can be desirable. The perfect world does not have to be an over-abundance of the fine things in life or having a helicopter or a Lear Jet. In my mind, the ideal world would be one where rights as a human being are held sacred; where a man cannot be forced to give up his dignity in order to survive; where his voice can be heard even if it is just one small voice; where a poor man can have the chance to make a living without sacrificing his freedom.

The study of Economics tells us that resources are scarce and there is a limit to wealth. However limited wealth may be, and how scarce resources are, one's mind is boundless, his imagination limited only by what one can visualize. He will surely be able to raise himself by his bootstraps if wealth were not so inequitably distributed. If his dreams are not held back by the principles of Economics as practiced by modern-day corporations and governments, he would be able to raise his knowledge and expertise in many fields not excluding science and technology.

We have seen the great minds of different eras and centuries present their idea of Utopia. All of these theories and doctrines stemmed from the common observation of social inequality in the world. Statesmen are motivated by the desire to provide the greatest good for the greatest number but watching the march of history proves only one thing: There is no Eden on earth. A friend of mine who eventually lost his marbles once proclaimed America to be heaven. His reasons were fairly reasonable foremost of which is that America makes Converse shoes, his favorites and, that in America there is Free Love. For these two reasons he has espoused the philosophy that America is not just Paradise but Heaven and when asked where hell was and he answered without hesitation: the Philippines.

We have seen the rape of Democracy in many parts of the world in the recent past where dictatorships thinly disguised as democratic flourished. Indonesia was ruled by the strogman Suharto for thirty years, the Philippines by Marcos for twenty years. In many parts of South and Central America military dictatorships flourished like banana plantations. Each one declared to be Democratic.

After the world-shaking People Power Movement in the Philippines, dictatorships have slowly been shown to be paper tigers unable to meet the onslought of an enraged populace. Successful in Pakistan but a disastrous failure in China, it has been emulated in many parts of the globe where in South Korea the military strongmen were thrown out of office and made to pay the price for abusing power by imprisonment and being put to shame. Desperately clinging to its tenuous hold on power is the Myanmar military dictatorship which insists on its brand of Democracy despite the global call for it to respect human rights and to allow real democracy to be implemented.

Is it desirable to have only the best of the best and the cream of the crop? Would everyone having the best cars like Honda and Porsche not make the ownership of these cars merely ordinary? Wouldn't pressure be exerted to make even more expensive and classy cars? Music is freely available so with movies and video. With six billion people in the planet, it would not be so difficult to find a date if one is not so picky or obnoxious. Arriving at a girl's doorstep with a bunch of flowers would go a long way towards making a guy kinda likeable and cover whatever imperfections there might be, Is online casino a desirable thing? Lost Eden

Everyone has a picture, a feeling, a sense of a place which is ideal or perfect. Paradise is depicted as being a place where there is no disease, no want, no lack for anything which is needed for survival. It must have been such a boring place for Adam and Eve. Man has an inquisitive mind and it is constantly asking questions and wanting to find out how things work. To live in a place where he cannot be challenged because everything is provided for him must have driven Adam crazy. One can immediately surmise that this business of Paradise is really something impractical, or contrived, or something which does not exist at all.

How can I say this? Very easily. A simple observation tells us that the world is built on conflict. In the oceans which covers much of the earth the dictum is: Big fish eat Small fish. On land it is pretty much the same thing. Plants that cannot move are eaten by herbivores which are in turn lunch for the carnivores. One can also observe that there are more herbivores than carnivores which leads me to think that Nature has arranged for some balance to be preserved. The predators cannot increase so much in numbers or they will decimate their prey thereby dooming their species to sure extinction. This is probably the reason why only the strongest male or the Alpha male can mate with the females which ensures that the best genes are replicated while keeping the number of offspring down.

I suppose that Nature in its pristine form might be considered Paradise since there is a balance which gets automatically maintained without much thought by the residents therein. There is always enough food for everyone. The sick and the dying herbivores become easy prey to the meat-eaters which is a simple way to recycle resources while preserving the strength of the species. The old and the infirm will only slow down the herd and their demise can be seen as a sacrifice to better the chances of rest to survive and reproduce.
