Lindsey & Nathan - 6/20/09

Lindsey & Nate were married in the cool shade of the pavilion at the Bridgewater Club before moving inside for a raucous reception filled with nonstop dancing by guests of all ages.

I joined photographers Kelly & Justin Wiard for some shots of the couple inside prior to the ceremony. Lindsey's sister provided an early highlight by lending her soaring vocals to the final prelude song before the processional. The ceremony was short but very sweet, and Lindsey & Nate graciously hung out in the heat to greet all their guests afterwards.

The colorful splashes of decor in the pavilion only hinted at the tremendous display of raised centerpieces in the ballroom supplied by Bokay Florist. I liked the simple groom's cake, and I loved the flourless chocolate cake that was served in lieu of a traditional cake. Mark Beecher of Grapevine Entertainment took it from there, executing an awesome playlist to perfection that had everyone from 9 to 90 dancing all night.

Abby & Eric - 6/13/09

Abby & Eric tied the knot at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church and stopped for some fun photos around the Butler University campus before celebrating in the Grand Hall of Crowne Plaza at Union Station.

I had been looking forward to this date for a long time, as I have learned at a couple of prior events that working for the Seger family means lots of warm smiles, energy and fun. After a wedding mass that featured the cutest collection of flower girls and ring bearers, we all hopped in a trolley with photographer Shelly Valentine to capture some images around the Butler campus. The clever couple used this opportunity to get some photos snapped for "thank you" and holiday cards - complete with a Santa hat.

We managed to beat the rain to Union Station, which was beautifully set up by the Crowne Plaza staff with decor by Our Backyard Flowers. After some formalities and funny toasts (loved the one pointing out how much they spoil their "Dog of Honor"), Wendy Reed and her awesome namesake band took the stage and kept the crowd glued to the dance floor the rest of the night.

Cassandra & Chase - 6/6/09

Cassie & Chase enjoyed a beautiful wedding ceremony at Meridian Street United Methodist Church before partying it up under the sea at the Indianapolis Zoo's Dolphin Adventure.

When I arrived at the church, photos with Erin Hession were underway, the fantastic florals provided by Kathy's Kloset were in place, and church coordinator David Otto was there to greet me with his usual warm welcome. I liked how the couple had a memorial candle separate from the unity candle near the front of the altar area, which they lit prior to their vows in honor of their loved ones.

By the time they pulled up to the zoo in a nifty ride courtesy of Antique Limousines of Indianapolis, consultant April Foster had the room beautifully decked out with Kathy's flowers and other nice touches, and their guests (and a few dolphins) were more than ready to greet them and have a great time, with party music and lots of energy ("Bam!") provided by the DJs of Hipnotik Sounds of Indy.

Megan & Kevin - 5/29/09

A day after videotaping Megan & Kevin's fun rehearsal dinner at Carrabba's Italian Grill, I joined them at the Ritz Charles chapel to capture the preparations, some fun photos with Megan King of Megelaine Images, and the splendid decor provided by the designers of Black Tie Events (thanks for the referral, Sara!) and The Painted Daisy. The framed photos of dearly missed family members in the front row were a poignant touch for ceremony, and the couple's lively recessional set to "Life Is a Highway" was an upbeat surprise.

I've never seen a couple kiss and cuddle as much as Megan & Kevin - they were so completely in love with each other and inseparable for the rest of evening. Megan surprised Kevin with a cute Snoopy groom's cake, and his reaction was priceless. Wedding entertainment director Jim Cerone, in addition to providing music for the ceremony, added many personalized touches to the formalities at the reception in the pavilion while expertly keeping the older-skewing crowd glued to the dance floor.

Sabrina & Brock - 5/16/09

On a beautiful spring day with a little bit of rain early for good luck, Sabrina & Brock enjoyed an elegant ceremony at St. Mary Catholic Church, followed by a lively reception at the Marriott North.

I arrived at the church in time to capture some preparations, lots of beautiful decor by Kathy's Kloset, and some fun photos with Kiera Dubach. After the full mass, the photos continued at Monument Circle and Holcomb Gardens, and this bridal party was clearly ready to party.

At the reception, DJ Wes Adkins of Event One DJs kept the formalities moving along, with many special touches along the way. My favorite was when Sabrina & Brock invited both sets of parents to dance to the same song that, coincidentally, each set of parents had first-danced to at their own respective weddings.

Brittany & Luke - 5/16/09

Brittany & Luke exchanged vows in front of 600 guests at St. Luke's United Methodist Church before celebrating under a massive tent on her family's residence, with recording artist Jon McLaughlin providing the formal dance music.

Coverage began the night before at an amazing Carmel lodge nicknamed "The Barn," where 80 guests were treated to a fantastic meal by Great Cooks and Company and a hilarious series of skits by the couple's friends and family.

On the big day, videographer Laurie Buschmann captured all the stunning details of the ceremony and reception, coordinated by Premier Event's David Jackson and designed by Enflora's Toomie Farris. Following dinner service by Kahn's Catering and the Jon McLaughlin-led formalities, the Nashville-based Pat Patrick Band brought a blast of old-school rock and soul, keeping the huge dance floor packed the rest of the night.

Ashley & Chris - 5/2/09

Ashley & Chris exchanged vows at my church, St. Luke's United Methodist, then celebrated their union at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. It was a day filled with many surprises, some planned and some not - Chris appropriately calls it the "Blood, Sweat & Tears Wedding." But by the time it was all over, this resilient couple enjoyed a fantastic day with many stories to tell.

Their first meeting took place on the beautiful grounds of the IMA, followed by photos with Angela Talley (who along with the IMA referred them to me). Then it was off to the Robertson Chapel in St. Luke's, beautifully decorated by Eventful Florals, for a most eventful ceremony. By the time Ashley & Chris shared their first kiss as husband and wife, the rousing applause was well-earned.

As they returned to the IMA for more pictures, their guests lined up for their own snapshots courtesy of Indy Photo Booth. The reception was abuzz with stories of the day, splendid food by Kahn's Catering and music provided by the Souled Out Band, highlighted by a surprise performance by the father of the bride. Capping a crazy day, even the IMA's Vanessa Chavez got into the act, channeling McGyver to help give Ashley & Chris the final photo op in front of the fountain that they had long hoped for.

Whitney & Wes - 3/7/09

Whitney & Wes, which much help from Circle City Planners (thanks for the referral, Tonya!) and Royal Creations, pulled out all the stops for a spectacular wedding and reception in the Crowne Plaza at Union Station's Grand Hall.

After an emotional first meeting between the bride and groom, we all went outside for some shots with photographer Jessica Strickland while some amazing finishing floral touches were put in place. In addition to a ginormous ball of flowers hanging over the aisle, an even greater number of petals were meticulously arranged on the aisle runner, matching a pattern in their decor. Just before the recessional, I had this crazy idea of tossing some of these petals at the couple as they walked out, which I texted to Tonya, who then made it happen.

Whit's reaction to the room after it was transformed for the reception was priceless. I had a similar reaction to the individual chocolate concoctions that were served up for dessert in lieu of the traditional wedding cake. DJ Brian Whitis, already in place from his ceremony music duties, presided over a fun-filled and unpredictable evening, the highlight of which was a classic cat-fight over Whitney's tossed bouquet.

Kelli & Patrick - 1/23/09

Four years after covering Heather & Kevin's beautiful wedding at St. Pius X Parish, I returned to capture another special day for the Curtis clan as Kevin's sister Kelli exchanged vows with Patrick on a mild January day. Angela and Chris from The Painted Daisy and Bloomz combined their floral talents to create a spectacular aisle for Kelli to walk down. The highlight of the ceremony outside of the couple themselves was an enchanting vocal performance provided by Barbara Curtis, the proud mother of the bride.

The reception took place afterwards at the Grand Hall of the Crowne Plaza at Union Station. With the always reliable Flip Miller Band rocking the house and consultant Sue Guyton running the show, Kelli & Patrick were able to enjoy a stress-free evening of fun and fellowship. It was nice to see Indy Photo Booth there, whose owners' wedding I will be shooting in June. And it was a kick to work with photographer Angela Talley, especially since we didn't even realize until our last day in Mexico a week earlier that we would be working together this evening.

Jennifer & Kevin - 1/13/09

After assuming I'd have to wait another 15 years to get to shoot another destination wedding, along came Jennifer & Kevin, who enjoyed a beautiful beach wedding at the Royal Haciendas Resort in Playa Del Carmen near Cancun, Mexico. I particularly liked the sand ceremony, where after the couple combined sand into a small bottle, each of their guests added a small shell to the keepsake. They recessed to a punk version of "Ring of Fire," which set the tone for a fun evening of fiesta, and a most spectacular moment provided by photographer Angela Talley's hubby Chris that will be talked about for years to come.

We were all looking forward just as much to the following day, when Angela and I took the couple and their entourage to a breathtaking stretch of the Riviera Maya for an amazing "Trash the Dress" shoot, which ended up with all of us waist deep in the beautiful turquoise water. Jen & Kevin topped it all off by frolicking with the dolphins at Puerto Aventuras.

Needless to say, I had an amazing time with the Talleys and their extended family who joined us for the adventure, and I cannot thank Angela enough for talking Jen & Kevin into letting this very lucky videographer tag along!

Setting the PACE

While I was in Mexico covering a wedding with photographer Angela Talley, Monica Richard of Detail + Design called us to ask if we could provide video and photos of Jennifer & Mike's spectacular 11/1/08 wedding to submit for a PACE (Professional Achievement in Creative Events) award. The entries are judged by fellow ISES (International Special Event Society) members around the country. Little did I know that that phone call would result in IndyVisual winning our first-ever PACE Award!

The award was for Best Team Effort (Budget over $100,000), and was handed out recently at the 2009 PACE Award Ceremony & Celebration at the Scottish Rite Cathedral. Our friends at Thomas Catering and Detail + Design asked if I could bring a camera to the event to capture some of their food and decor, and I was more than happy to oblige. Here's the video - I even managed to squeeze in a few fun people shots!

No, these aren't the DJs - it's Cirque du Soleil's LOVE!

As a "thank you" for helping him produce his "Perfect Host" DVD series, my good friend Jim Cerone generously invited me to be his guest at the Mobile Beat Las Vegas 2009 convention last week, where he was slated to speak all three days and launch the DVD. Clearly, I couldn't pass up a free trip to Vegas, which I had never visited before.

The seminars were interesting - Jim's as well as the ones touching on topics relevant to my business. Otis Day ("Shout"), the Archies ("Sugar Sugar") and Vanilla Ice ("Ice Ice Baby") were there to entertain the very people who keep their hits ringing in my ears every weekend. And the food - Buca di Beppo, Maggiano's, plus my first Brazilian steakhouse experience - wow!

It was amusing to witness firsthand what a "rock star" Jim was. Packed seminars, autographs - we couldn't walk ten feet without another admirer stopping him to chat. He's obviously inspired a lot of people around the country. I also got a kick out of meeting the best of the best in the DJ industry and hanging with Indy DJs like Jon Bruce, Jesse Carruthers and Wes Adkins.

Vegas itself was a lot to take in, but a couple of walks up and down the Strip with the guys gave me a good primer for future visits. Without a doubt, the highlight of my trip was seeing LOVE, Cirque du Soleil's mind-blowing interpretation of a story set to remixed Beatles music. It was just the creative jolt I needed to dig into our Mexico wedding edit this week!

Sara & Jeffrey - 12/27/08

Our record 50th and final wedding of 2008 also marked our 11th visit to the Omni Severin Hotel last year (thanks for all the referrals, ladies!), where Sara & Jeff tied the knot on a beautifully mild day following a particularly cold week. Following the intimate ceremony, we crammed into a car with Janie of Alanna Photography to take advantage of the 60-degree weather and capture some fun moments on Monument Circle.

The dark decor provided by Steve's Flowers & Gifts contrasted nicely with the Severin Lobby to create a festive seasonal ambiance during dinner, and the band First Impression kept the guests jazzed up for the remainder of the evening. As an added bonus, I got to say an extra goodbye to Sara & Jeff the next morning while enjoying Sunday brunch at the Omni before the Colts game.

Anne & Jason - 11/29/08

Annie & Jason were married at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, with a reception following in the Grand Hall at the Crowne Plaza at Historic Union Station. They were referred to us by Tonya Shadoan of Circle City Planners.

Coverage started the night before at their rehearsal dinner at the Highland Golf & Country Club. Annie got the idea for a Purdue Boilermakers train-shaped cake from another video I had shown her, and the wooden train whistles were a hit with the kids. The whistles made another appearance the next day during the send-off after the wedding ceremony, after which the bridal party headed to Monument Circle for some shots with photographer Peter Thurin.

The reception at Union Station was a sight to behold, with holiday decor (including stockings for well-wishing guests to leave their notes in), lots of candles and elegant flowers by McNamara Florist. In an unusual touch, Annie & Jason got every single one of their traditional formalities out of the way before dinner, leaving everyone to enjoy the remainder of the evening rocking out to music by the band Blammo.

Another Destination Wedding

It's been a crazy few weeks devoted to travelling for the holidays, getting ready for the January bridal shows, and now preparing for another destination wedding in Playa Del Carmen near Cancun in Mexico! Jennifer and Kevin were referred to me by photographer Angela Talley, and we're all planning on lots of great location shots and good times at the Royal Haciendas Resort. Obviously I'll keep this blog updated when I return with highlights from this and a few other weddings yet to be edited. Until then, adios!

Tiffany & Brian - 11/15/08

One weekend after videotaping another wedding and reception at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, I returned to cover Tiffany and Brian's big day, also coordinated by Circle City Planners (Tonya this time), who have thankfully helped me fill many of my fall dates. Photographer Andrew Scalini and I captured the bride's preparations as she got ready for her first meeting with Brian, preceded by a thoughtful delivery of flowers and a card from the groom. After their tender first meeting and some photo time, the ceremony in the auditorium was underway, with the groom's father presiding over the wedding.

The ballroom was beautifully adorned by McNamara Florist, and the reception commenced with the usual splendid cocktail and dinner service by Thomas Caterers. After an upbeat first dance over a monogram spotlight, an evening of timeless rock and roll kicked off courtesy of the endlessly energetic Endless Summer Band. The evening was highlighted by the hilarious presentation of a hot dog statue - yes, a hot dog statue - to the couple by the groom's buddies, thus continuing a tradition of pooling their funds to buy unforgettable gifts for each other's weddings.

Lyndsey & David - 11/8/08

All of the weddings I videotape are special and poignant in their own unique way, but Lyndsey & David's wedding day has certainly got to be one of the most tear-jerking ones I've ever covered. After a brief rehearsal at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, we gathered at Milano Inn for some fun festivities that included many surprises, including not one but two groom's cakes representing his two loves, his dog and a certain pro football team from Boston.

The wedding day started with hair & makeup at Lyndsey's family home, where the bride squeezed in some quick dance lessons (Soulja Boy & Cupid Shuffle). Then the preparations continued at the Scottish Rite, where everyone just about lost it when Lyndsey's tearful dad Craig first saw her in her wedding gown. The tears would continue all the way down the aisle of the auditorium when he had to take a moment to compose himself enough to give her away. Ann Conrad and Ken Knowles from my church provided some amazing music, and it was sweet to see David's grandfather standing up with him as his honorary best man.

The auditorium and ballroom were splendidly decorated by Darcie of Circle City Planners (who thankfully referred the couple to us) and Royal Creations, with plenty of touches commemorating loved ones who had passed on. Also particularly moving was the presence of several of Lyndsey's patients from the Peyton Manning Children's Hospital where she works, including one lucky girl who received a Build-A-Bear Bride. There was plenty of laughter as well, including a bouquet toss that would have made her hospital's namesake proud, nearly hitting the huge chandelier and completely overshooting the single gals after telling them to move closer.

Thomas Catering provided their usual great dinner service, Brian Jones of Indy Sounds kept the energy level high, and Lyndsey's photographer aunt Lynn Lee captured all the memories with an insider's familiarity of this loving and wonderful family.

Jennifer & Michael - 11/1/08

The event date for this post is November 1, and it was certainly an amazing day, but it's October 31 that everyone involved in Jennifer & Mike's big weekend still talks about. That would be Halloween, Jennifer's favorite holiday, when the couple held a spooktacular rehearsal dinner at Crown Hill Cemetery's Gothic Chapel. All the guests and vendors were advised to dress accordingly, and I think I improvised pretty well on a $5 budget and last-minute shopping trip (see below). The couple arrived in a hearse, and the ghoul times commenced from there, with a scary good meal served up by Great Cooks and Company.

The wedding day brought me back to the amazing new Central Library for the second straight weekend. The library theme was ingeniously integrated into every aspect of the wedding, from the "Save the Date" cards resembling due date cards to the card catalog style "guest book" and on through the cake and programs, with actual books for favors. Tradition played a big role as well, with Jennifer wearing the same dress during the ceremony that her mother and grandmother had worn at their weddings. Her wedding ring and cake server have also gone back multiple generations.

Jennifer's vision was brought to life by consultant Monica Richard (who kindly refered the couple to us) and designer Gene Huddleson, both of Detail + Design, as well as the Library's own Flik Catering service and Evans Audio Visual. The huge Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra filled the equally huge space with timeless big band classics that had everyone dancing. And my friend Angela Talley was there with me to photograph every last detail of this unforgettable chapter, right up to Jennifer & Mike's departure through a sea of "Flutter Fetti" streamers.

Amanda & Daniel - 10/25/08

Three years after I videotaped their first daughter Amy's wedding day, the Draper family kindly brought me back to cover Mandy & DJ's nuptials at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. The reception took place afterwards at the Marriott North, where this ready-to-party crowd (the Super Bowl Shuffle even made an appearance!) rocked out to music by the great Chicago band Maggie Speaks. It was a pleasure to work again with the reunited vendor team of consultant Leslie Jones, photographer Larry Seidman, and McNamara Florist's Alan Thompson. Most of all, it was a joy to be part of another special occasion in the lives of such a warm and loving family.

Molly & Seth - 10/24/08

Molly & Seth exchanged vows on what started out as a rainy Friday evening at the beautiful Sacred Heart Catholic Church just south of downtown. Amazingly, right before the ceremony, the sun defied all weather forecasts and broke through the clouds, convincing all of us that Molly's sister was smiling down on her from Heaven on her special day. Photographers bobbi+mike took advantage of this break and got some lovely shots of the newlyweds outside the church.

The reception at the newly expanded Central Library was an experience to behold, with nice floral touches by Kathy's Kloset, lighting by Evans Audio Visual, catering by Flik, and the usual rockin' music by Zanna-Doo bringing energy and intimacy to this tremendous space. Family friends Carlie Oakley (who referred Molly's mother Barbara to us) and Rayna Traylor lent their valuable expertise at the ceremony and reception respectively.

Jennifer & John - 10/19/08

We don't have a whole lot of self-described "blog stalkers" that I know of, but Jennifer has been one of our favorites for quite a while now. So it was with much excitement that I finally got to shoot her and John's wedding on another lovely fall weekend. The coverage started with a rehearsal dinner at the Skyline Club overlooking downtown Indy, with John's uncle Rob providing some unplugged classic rock throughout the evening. John's Vietnamese heritage was evident in the decoration of their cake, which I was happy to help them practice cutting as preparation for the "real" thing the next day.

Everything on the big day took place at the Omni Severin, starting with preparations in the bridal suite as ace photographer Andrew Scalini and I captured the moments, and on through an eloquent and educational ceremony courtesy of Dr. Scott Toussaint. John had proposed to Jennifer with a ring hidden inside a pumpkin (now there's a trick AND a treat!), so a pumpkin theme was evident throughout The Painted Daisy's splendid reception decor, in the jars at the tasty candy buffet, and atop the cake. But the most colorful sight to behold was DJ Sunny Moon's re-introduction of the couple in full traditional Vietnamese formal wear halfway through the evening.

Neha & Warren - 10/11/08

A few months after their traditional Hindu ceremony out of town, Neha & Warren gathered with their friends and family for a beautiful wedding experience on a perfect summer-like weekend. The rehearsal dinner marked my first visit to the Obsidian Conference & Catering Center at the top of the Chase tower, and the views from the city's highest point were unbelievable. The RCA Dome's deflated roof was interesting to see, as were the nifty miniature stadium replicas Warren gave as gifts to his groomsmen.

The next day's ceremony took place outside the Eiteljorg Museum, amid splendid decor (loved the arbor!) by Royal Creations and featuring a gorgeous sand ceremony presided over by Dr. Scott Toussaint. The reception was undoubtedly highlighted by the best man's acoustic tribute to his brother's love for Neha - and the Colts - as well as his performance of their first dance. The Wendy Reed Band took it from there, while Kahn's Catering served up their usual amazing cuisine and Darcie of Circle City Planners (who along with the Eiteljorg referred the couple to us) kept everything running flawlessly. Sadly for me, this was the final wedding photo shoot for my dear friends Stacy and Mary, but I was honored to share one last wedding adventure with them.

Sonia & Christopher - 10/4/08

Sonia & Chris pulled out all the stops for their huge wedding day, with much help from Tonya Shadoan of Circle City Planners, who generously referred them to us. Their ceremony took place under a white canopy in front of a striking sunset backdrop in the theater of the Scottish Rite Cathedral, lavishly decorated by Royal Creations. There were many tears shed by both bride & groom during the ceremony, and many smiles as they made their grand exit outside surounded by bagpipes, drums, and lots of airborne birdseed.

The reception at the Montage was on a scale unlike any I've seen there before. Dramatically lit red curtains lined the entrance, transporting the guests into an evening filled with jazz, amazing ice sculptures, excellent food by Kahn's Catering, moody lighting by Evans Audio Visual, and great dance music by Lakeside Entertainment, capped off by a spectacular fireworks display. I got a kick out of the surprise groom's cake - a jet ski, every bit as sweet as the couple themselves. I also enjoyed working with Crowe's Eye Photography for the first time at such a fantastic event.

Jennifer & Casey - 10/3/08

Jennifer & Casey tied the knot at the Eiteljorg Museum on a perfectly crisp fall day that kicked off the best October weather-wise I've ever experienced. Casey was so obviously passionate about Jennifer, even carrying with him the ticket stub from their first date as well as an old cocktail napkin with a message that sealed their relationship. They exchanged vows in the circular outdoor garden in front of a gorgeous dusk horizon.

In an interesting twist I've never seen there before, everyone went inside for cocktails, toasts and cake cutting before returning to the transformed outdoor areas for a wonderful dinner provided by Kahn's Catering amidst a sea of tremendous floral arrangements by Alan Thompson of McNamara Florist. Dave and Rae's full band provided the usual spectacular music that had everyone asking for more while Jason Miller of Silvertree Photographics captured all of the evening's fun.
