I've always been described as a passionate person. I don't argue this,..it's true. Wherever my heart finds itself embedded, my passion follows. I love Ocala. It has so much potential. In just the year that I've made Ocala my home, I've witnessed growth in the businesses that surround me. Although there's economic downturn, I see Ocala doing better than what is perceived.

I'm surrounded by amazing talent, from entrepreneurs to genius designers, to some very clever sales gurus. There's only great promise for Ocala. I'm proud to serve as its president for the Greater Ocala Advertising Federation. A great honor has been bestowed upon me by the GOAF Board. I will serve them and my community to the best my ability.

At this time, I want to acknowledge and thank my current board whom I am nothing unless we are one board: Jessi Miller, Past-President; Alexis Davey, Vice President 2008-09; Mark Herschberger, Past-Vice President; Greg Petry, Treasurer 2008-09; Deborah Roth, Secretary 2008-09; Summer Gill, Programs Chair 2008-09; Mara Rodriguez, Addys Chair; Heath Scott, Membership Chair 2008-09; Andy Stracuzzi, Web Chair 2008-09.

With honor and respect,
Adriana Rosas
President 2008-09
Greater Ocala Advertising Federation

Greater Ocala Advertising Federationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14345322586805406578noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2785606749045868991.post-18443117178697417342008-05-13T21:26:00.005-04:002008-07-05T12:18:30.140-04:00The Final Stretch<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_cWZlqGwjwPI/SG-eztFHk1I/AAAAAAAAASk/YgxvlgTTfWc/s200/Adr_J-1_062508m.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5219565104257274706" />
At the beginning of May I attended the final conference of the year, The AAF 4th District's Annual Conference, in St. Petersburg. I gave my last report to the District as President of the Greater Ocala Advertising Federation. I skipped the meeting on how to "let go" and let the incoming President handle things. I know our club is good hands with Adriana Rosas, no worries there!

Ocala made a strong showing at District this year. I received the first-ever "Superstar of Government Relations" award, the only special award to be handed out during the conference other than the standards. Ocala Magazine won three GOLD Addys! The video shown at the Gala was ours, too, so Kip Williams and Tymn Armstrong made their on-screen appearance.

I joke that at the annual conferences if everyone is either "incoming" or "outgoing," who's running things? Of course the same crew is still are running things, we're just in our final stretch.

What is happening between now and July 1st when crews change? We have two programs, May's behind-the-scenes tour of the Ocala Star Banner and June's 3rd Annual Brain Bash. We will be swearing-in our new board at the Brain Bash. There is also the National AAF Conference in June in Atlanta which I will be attending (Ocala represents!).

What is beyond all that? Adriana will take over as President, as your new fearless leader. She will lead the club through a very busy year... carrying on my momentum and growing it exponentially. Adriana will be backed by a powerful board, so the 2008-2009 year holds a lot of promise!

We will be offering a 3-month series of programs on the interactive side of advertising: How to Integrate Interactive Into a Full Media Plan, How to Get the Most Bang for Your Buck Online, and Be Found in the Vast Online Sea. We will have a media auction. We will have an outstanding Addy season. We will have fun, drinks, socials, activities, oh my!

What will I be doing when my term ends? I will sit on as Immediate Past President and offer my energy and experience (I'll be around). I also will be moving up and doing some work on the District level. I am the 2008-2009 District Addy Judging Chair. This is exciting for me because participating in the judging portion of our Addys, as well as going to the Treasure Coast and judging their Addys myself, were among the most rewarding experiences I had in AdFed this year. Rewarding good work and respecting the judging process, paying attention to the integrity and the work itself, is something I look forward to doing on the District level.

I also am on the Government Relations Committee at the District Level. This is a big year for the 4th District, when we all go to vote in November there will be an item on the ballot regarding a dramatic lowering of your property taxes. It's a tax-swap, and the money to replace the property taxes will come from an elimination of service sales tax exemptions. Meaning Advertising, Law, Medicine, Education, Lawn, Dry Cleaning... you name the service and it could be taxed – with 1% above what we're paying now. 20 years ago it happened and had disasterous effects before it was overturned 6-months later. Know that you will be hearing from AdFed about this, campaigns are forthcoming!

Okay, I will step down from my soap box now... and from my Presidential position in another 6 weeks. Go Adriana and the 2008-2009 team!!

Greater Ocala Advertising Federationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14345322586805406578noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2785606749045868991.post-19670711439024624652008-04-20T21:30:00.011-04:002008-04-29T20:59:41.997-04:00Spring Fever! This April finds me no less busy than ever. Two annual AdFed conferences are coming up, one for the 4th District (in May, Tampa) and one for National (in June, Atlanta). Fun!

In addition to those conferences and our regular programs that we're busy scheduling, GO-AdFed is about to vote in next year's Board. I could say that I can't believe my year as President is nearly over – and in some respect that is true – but in another regard it has been a very full year already. That's a good thing! It's also a good thing that these responsibilities are passed on each year, letting the clubs evolve and hopefully continue to grow under different personalities. It will be official next week when the members vote – and in June we will officially induct the new board members.

In past news, last month I went to Tallahassee for a 4th District conference. It was our annual "Rally in Tally," where we visit the capitol and speak with our Senators and Representatives. It was a fun and educating experience for all of us. We had the opportunity to speak about how strong the advertising industry is and how we "Fuel Florida's Economy." Did you know:

•Advertising helps generate between $275 & $286 billion in Florida’s Economic Activity •That’s approximately 20% of the state’s $1.3 trillion in total economic activity.
•Total advertising-dependent employment in Florida is over 1.2 million.
•That represents about 15% of the entire state work force.

We are indeed a force with a voice (AdFed, "The Unified Voice of Advertising"). I will send up the Gold wins this week to district for judging at that level. Then that's it, whew!

What a flurry of activity that was. I liken it to planning and having a wedding. As I said in my speech, "It takes a village to throw an Addy Gala." Everyone worked so hard and did such great work, the night was a smashing success. I had a blast and the buzz is that everyone else did, too. Willie Green and his band were the highlight for me, the after-show was amazing... intimate, world-class, fun and sexy blues. I wish more people had stayed to enjoy it, it was the best show I've seen in Ocala. Those of us who did will remember it always.

So what now? Quickly on to next month's program. We're having a club mixer with the FPRA and Tom Hayes, AdFed 4th District Government Relations Chairman, is coming to speak with us about the ever-pressing issue of our service sales tax exemption. It's an important topic and I'm pleased to be in the position to bring the news to our community. The mixer will be at MCA on Thursday, March 6th, from 5:30-7:30pm. See our News & Events Blog for more info.

Beyond that... you know, I don't know! Haha. Yes I do. Beyond March we will be planning a media auction as a fundraiser for Go-AdFed and our scholarship.

We are also starting to think ahead to next year... who will be our 2008-2009 Board of Directors? Secretary? Treasurer? Vice President? Programs Chair? Communications Chair? Membership Chair? President?... yes I do think I can be persuaded to do one more year if that's what the members want – but I need help! If you're reading this and haven't been involved lately or at all, you don't know what you're missing! It's rewarding, we are doing so much. I urge you to contact me or anyone on our board to find out how to get involved. It can be in a big or small way, every little bit helps. If things aren't how you'd like them to be, get involved! If things are great and you want to show your appreciation, get involved! If you really don't know, the best way to find out is to get involved!

Did I say get involved?

Onwards and upwards.
GOooooo-AdFed!
Jessi

Greater Ocala Advertising Federationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14345322586805406578noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2785606749045868991.post-30060484438237314642008-01-10T21:11:00.000-05:002008-01-10T21:31:18.443-05:00Addy's my new middle nameHappy Addy Year! er, I mean New Year!

As Addy Chair and President, I've got my hands full right now. I've also got boxes full of 110+ great Addy entries. I have the lucky privilege of peeking at the creative work before even the judges see it, and I can definitely say the judges have a fun yet difficult job ahead of them.

I'd like to say thank you and good luck to all of our talented entrants:

Advisors Advertising, Inc.
Appleton Museum of Art of CFCC
Blue Centaur
Blue Sky Graphic Communications, Inc.
Clear Channel Outdoor
Flaxen
Florida's Blood Centers
Jessica Miller (hey, that's me!)
Kevin Christian Music
NetSource Technologies
Special Publications
Strategic Business Forms, Inc.
Tomes Rabold Advertising & Design, Inc.
Tymn Armstrong
Zed+Zed+Eye Creative Communications

Tomorrow our judges come to town (shhh, their identity is still a secret!) and the grueling judging process will take place Saturday. Then comes what might be the hardest part of being on the Addy Committee: the weeks before we can announce the winners!

Rest easy, though, everyone can get a preview of all of the entries on January 23rd at MCA/Brick City Center for the Arts, at 5:30 pm. You can take all the time you want to look them over without feeling rushed as sometimes happens right before the Gala. We'll have drinks and hors d'oeuvres, so join us!

All this while we are busy planning the Creative Blues Addy Gala, which will be surprisingly fun. We're also planning our Club Mixer that we're co-hosting with FPRA in March. Join us as we mingle with our clubs and AdFed District Government Relations Chairman, Tom Hayes, will come down to brief us on the service sales tax situation. If you're not aware about this imminent potential new tax on advertising services, you definitely need to be there. If you can't make it, give me a call or send me an email, I'll be happy to give you information.

Speaking of information... be sure to pick up an Ocala Business Journal when it comes out in February. There will be a story on the service sales tax issue as well as one on The Greater Ocala Advertising Federation (yes, us!).

It's turning out to be a very "happening" new year and I for one am loving it! Happy 2008!

Onward and upward,
Jessi

Greater Ocala Advertising Federationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14345322586805406578noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2785606749045868991.post-2450756871248776132007-11-23T21:03:00.000-05:002007-11-23T22:06:47.190-05:00To-do, to-do, to-doMy to-do list is growing. Odd as it may seem, I'm actually happy about it.

It's about half-way through my year as President and I'm finally sinking my teeth in. It seems the more I learn about AdFed, the more I want us to do. This is a great club, a strong grass-roots organization with people volunteering their time, creativity, energy, and sweat to keep it running and growing. I'm an ambitious, energetic person and I see us doing great things.

Here in Marion County, we have the power to improve our professional lives and the quality of our business. The reward for serving the Greater Ocala Advertising Federation is that good, old-fashioned satisfaction that comes from giving back and making a difference. Pushing positive change along. Rewarding excellence. Bringing awareness to community service issues. Guiding students through professionalism. Bringing new opportunities for professional education and growth. Networking and bringing people together who can help one another. Having fun!

As rewarding as it is, it takes a lot of work. As I said, the more I understand and want to do, the more ideas we all have, the more that to-do list grows. Lucky for me, most of it is fun stuff. Lucky for me, too, I have great board members. Our newest addition, Adriana Rosas, of Purple Cow Communications (our Communications Chair and our Membership Chair), recently came over for a mini, mid-year retreat to catch up on the details and re-evaluate where we are and what we need to do. See us working hard (and having fun):

Adriana is "on it." I am not the only one taking the pictures any more. Way to go, communications chair! Whenever something is happening, I look up and she's taking a picture. Fabulous.

Our other board members have been busy, too. Seminars, media auctions, scholarships, community service, legislative and government affairs, oh my!

It's a fun time. If you are interested in volunteering, participating in the fun, sharing ideas and feeling that great giving back satisfaction, give me a ring or send me a note. I'm here, checking off my to-do list.

"Write and update the President's Blog. It's beautiful. We're here in Daytona for the 4th District AAF Winter Conference, heading into the last day of meetings and presentations. It's been a great weekend full of fun and information. The tone is very political right now, as Florida goes through possible budget and tax upheaval, The AdFed gets to do what it does best – represent us. I'll be bringing more information home to you all to keep you updated, it's an important time for the advertising industry to be alert.

It's breakfast time, Adriana and I are heading down... and I'll give my President's report if I can squeek it out... my voice has about gone. Maybe Adriana can talk for me and I'll whisper to her. Calendars are filling up with special events, holidays, birthdays, vacations, deadlines, meetings, lunches, dinners, you name it. It won't slow down until February, or maybe not even until April! I'm constantly amazed at how much there is to do in "little" Ocala.

Not to be left out of the hustle and bustle, GO-AdFed has a lot planned for the season too. This month's program (Oct. 17th) is on "The Green Movement" – presented by Mac Papers. This topic is very current and relevant, so I'm excited to hear what Tara has to say. I'm also looking forward to the giveaways, I LOVE paper! In November, Pedro Perez will be returning to give the "Multicultural Marketing" presentation that was canceled in September. In December we are fortunate to have Erik Schroeder, the Director of Marketing (a.k.a. New Business) from PUSH come and speak on "Obtaining and Maintaining Business."

That takes us right into Addy Award time! Entries will be due January 8th, 2008. We have great judges lined up for the competition and we are busily planning an exciting "Creative Blues" gala for February 22nd. This year the awards are new! Especially designed and custom created for The Greater Ocala Advertising Federation, the new awards will outshine the little plastic men. I rather liked the Academy-Award resemblance they had, but the new medals are beautiful! Even more exciting, we'll be giving out gold and silver medals, so even more people can "get their Addy on."

Stay tuned for updates on all of that and more, it's turning out to be a very eventful season. I hope to see you around and would love to hear from you. Leave a comment or send me a note, let me know what you think, about new ideas, or what kind of hair-day you're having. ;)

GOoooooo-AdFed!
Jessi

Greater Ocala Advertising Federationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14345322586805406578noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2785606749045868991.post-15675382475702775272007-08-19T13:35:00.000-04:002007-08-22T21:52:01.848-04:00Summer Fun!Summer's almost over, at least schedule-wise. Public school has begun and we're busy planning fall, winter and yes - even spring 2008 events. I do take some comfort in knowing the warm Florida sun will stay shining for months to come before the holiday season begins.

I will be going to Jacksonville this weekend (August 24-26) with Diane Smith, our Treasurer, to attend the AdFed 4th District Summer Conference. That will be a lot of fun on the beach, as well as a lot of workshops and meetings. I'll give the highlights when we get back.

We bashed our brains last Wednesday, well... we brainstormed and mingled at the 2nd Annual Brain Bash at the Martini Bar. It was a lot of fun! Keep your eyes out for pictures that might show up in the papers, as we had press there too. The raffle was a hit, a dozen or so prizes were given out - t-shirts, monkeys (production monkeys?) and design books. Thank you to everyone who filled out a survey, it really helps to know what everyone is thinking when we're making our plans.

We also said goodbye to Fred Mullen, our founding member, at the Brain Bash. Fred started the Greater Ocala AdFed some 23 years ago. He is now moving away to beautiful Tennessee with family. The good news is that he'll stay in touch and will continue to visit. This July I have put more hours into AdFed than any month yet, and as I write this it is still not over. We had our first board meeting with the new and returning directors, I went to Cocoa Beach for a 3-day 4th District President/Leadership Retreat, returned and worked hours on an agenda for our own retreat, which we held last week to map out our year. Website and budgeting meetings are scheduled for next week, so by month's end a lot of plans will be getting underway. It's been a busy month – rest-assured, work is going on behind the scenes!

I'm looking forward to seeing changes through and to learning more about the traditions. The American Advertising Federation is rich in history and tradition. Since 1904 clubs have been forming and merging to eventually become what we now know of as AdFed (or AAF), which is 50,000 members strong. Ocala is no exception, there is a history of AdFed and advertising here that we will strive to celebrate... while breathing some new life and progress into our advertising community.

One change you might have noticed already is in our name. Instead of "GOAF" we have changed the emphasis. The Greater Ocala Advertising Federation is now GO-AdFed. Our new logo, designed by Andy Stracuzzi our Branding Manager, reflects the identity and bears the national AAF colors. Everything you'll see from now on will showcase our new, professional and fun look.

In fact, you'll be seeing and hearing more from us in general – communication is a priority. I hope that you'll contact me or one of our board members with any interest or curiosity whatsoever. I also really hope that you'll become involved more actively. We have so many fun projects percolating and the more help we have, the better and bigger everything will be. This club belongs to the members and takes on their personalities, so dive in and put a little bit of YOU into it!

I will keep you all updated via this blog... keep your eye on it for photos and stories, news that relates to our industry, peeks at what lies ahead, behind-the-scenes goings-on and general communication. Post comments, send me emails, I want to hear from all of you. I want to know what's working and what you'd like to see happen.

GOoooooo-AdFed!
Jessi

PS- Here's a photo taken at the 4th District Retreat with some of the other bright and shiny club-leaders:

Greater Ocala Advertising Federationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14345322586805406578noreply@blogger.com0
