A team of scientists led by Sylvain Brisse (of the Pasteur Institute) now reports the first molecular data on the viruses involved in the outbreak in the international open-access journal PLoS Medicine

The report states that up to a third of the population of of Comoros, Mayotte, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, and Réunion are infected with also several states of India seeing cases.

The article continues:

The disease is caused by the chikungunya virus, which is spread to humans by mosquito bites. It was first described in Tanzania in 1952 and has since been found in Africa, India, and South East Asia. The name is derived from a local Tanzanian word meaning "that which bends up", a reference to the stooped posture many patients develop as a result of painful inflammation of the joints commonly associated with the disease. Other symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, and a skin rash. There is no specific treatment available. Most patients get better after a few days, but the pain in the joints can persist for long after the other symptoms have disappeared.

The authors note, the mosquitoes that transmit the Chikungunya virus in Africa and Asia are not limited to these areas--in fact they are the same ones that transmit yellow fever and dengue fever in many parts of the world--which raises the possibility that the chikungunya virus could spread and cause disease elsewhere.getvisiblenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27724017.post-1149631481146804672006-06-06T15:00:00.000-07:002006-06-06T15:06:02.533-07:00230 Chikungunya Cases Reported in Belgaum AreaAlthough it appears that Chickungunya is falling in other areas, it looks like it's spreading fast in Belgaum district NewIndPress reports.

As many as 230 people are said to be suffering from Chickungunua in the villages of Ramdurg, Bailhongal, Gokak, Khanapur, Chikkodi and Athani.

The District Health Officer, Dr P A Pattanshetti, has stated that the disease is under control in Telsang now as medical teams were sent in.getvisiblenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27724017.post-1149630855697747902006-06-06T14:47:00.000-07:002006-06-06T14:54:15.716-07:00A Homeopathic Cure? The New India Press talks of the assertion of Dr A N Sundaresh from the Homepathy Medical Association of India.

At the moment there appears to be no cure to this contagious disease in traditional medicine, only the control of symptoms is offered.

Sundaresh said that homeopathy can help fight against the disease with Eupatorium, Rustax, Pyrogenium and Gelsemium being the most effective.

We would never believe we have the knowledge to recommend any treatment so make sure you seek informed medical advice.getvisiblenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27724017.post-1147286417495473512006-05-10T11:39:00.000-07:002006-05-10T11:40:17.500-07:00EpidemiologyChikununya was first described in Tanzania, Africa in 1952. An outbreak of chikungunya was discovered in Port Klang in Malaysia in 1999 affecting 27 people [1].

Recent outbreaks
In February 2005, an outbreak was recorded on the French island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean. As of February 25, 2006, 157,000 residents have been hit by the virus in the past year (out of a population of about 777,000 - 20%). Since October 2005, 52 deaths have been associated with chikungunya (French health minister Xavier Bertrand said 77 deaths in January 2006 may have been "directly or indirectly attributable" to the outbreak[2]). In 2006 there was a big outbreak in the Andhrapradsh state in India. Nearly 200,000 people were affected by this disease in the districts of praksham and nellore in this state. Some deaths have been reported but it was thought to be due mainly to the inappropriate use of antibiotics and anti inflammatory tablets. As this virus can cause thrombocytopenia, injudicious use of these drugs can cause erosions in the gastric epithelium leading to exsangunating upper GI bleed (due to thrombocytopenia)
There has been reports of large scale outbreak of this virus in southern India. At least 80,000 people in Gulbarga, Tumkur, Bidar, Raichur, Bellary, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Kolar and Bijapur districts in Karnataka state are known to be affected since December 2005. [4].

A separate outbreak of chikungunya fever was reported from Malegaon town in Nasik district, Maharashtra state, in the first two weeks of March 2006, resulting in over 2000 cases. These symptoms respond only partially to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. An open pilot study on the efficacy of chloroquine phosphate was carried out and 10 patients completed 20 weeks of therapy. Both the Ritchie articular index and morning stiffness improved significantly. In the patient's assessment, 7 out of 10 considered their conditions to have improved. On the basis of the doctor's assessment, 5 of the 10 had improved. These results justify further controlled blind trials of chloroquine in chronic Chikungunya arthritis."

2. The name is derived from the Makonde word meaning "that which bends up" in reference to the stooped posture developed as a result of the arthritic symptoms of the disease. The disease was first described by Marion Robinson[1] and W.H.R. Lumsden[2] in 1955, following an outbreak on the Makonde Plateau, along the border between Tanganyika and Mozambique, in 1952. Chikungunya is closely related to O'nyong'nyong virus[3].

Chikungunya is not considered to be fatal. However, in 2005-2006, 77 deaths have been associated with chikungunya on Réunion island.

1. Robinson Marion (1955).
