What God is nudging us to “proclaim” is that we, the parents, are our children’s primary teachers. It is our biblical duty to “train them up in the way they should go” and that isn’t just for those of us who keep our kids home and teach them the educational basics.

It is the responsibility of all parents whether our children are in public, private, charter, co-op, or home schools. We are still their primary teacher; but many parents in this day and age have become lazy with that responsibility. That is why it must change now.

Parents should be excited about teaching kids to cook, plant a garden, read a story, and most importantly learn about our Lord and Savior. THAT is the ultimate homeschool experience. Every parent becomes a homeschooler the day their child is born. You teach them to coo and ga, how to sit up, how to walk, what to eat, how to dress, and so on.

I loved the fact that I did not have to leave my family (or "drag" them around with me) to attend. I also am looking forward to listening to recorded messages that I missed during the actual conference. This was a very unique and wonderful idea. I think you are "setting" the trend!

All the sessions were from a Christian worldview, the freebies were FANTASTIC, it was also very friendly and everyone was very helpful when there were problems.

This was the first online conference I've ever participated in (and I think it was a great idea!). Also, I have never been able to attend a "real" homeschool conference, as I live in a rural area far from the "real" world where all of those nice conferences are held. As co-leader of the homeschool support group in our area, I quickly notified the 35 families on our email list, plus homeschooling friends all over the state! I was so excited that moms like me could benefit from this technology that lets us get instruction, inspiration and encouragement without leaving our homes, and Dad taking off work, and spending lots of money on gas and motels and food and conference fees, and having to find someone to take care of the children and the animals---all the reasons why we've never gone to a conference!!! I LOVE that I could do this from home, no travel or food expense in this tight economy, but I still got all the benefit of knowledge from the speakers! SO GREAT !!!!

I loved the fact that I could attend this conference from New Zealand. It was great to be able to chat with others.

I loved being able to participate without leaving my home, I didn't have to find a sitter, I could search online for the items that were mentioned during the talks. IT WAS GREAT!

Sessions were not dragged on forever…the freebies were available to all whether we were able to attend live or not…everyone had a chance at the door prizes versus playing games while the speaker is speaking and you end up not paying attention to the speaker cause you have to watch your screen for door prize games flying by…and lastly, from the ones I was able to attend, it seemed the HOTM staff stayed out of the Q&A session, allowing the speaker to take care of answering their area of expertise!

The conference "goody bag" freebies were awesome!!

The speakers were really good. Wasn't sure how I was going to like not being able to see them, but was surprised it wasn't an issue for me. Thought the texting was very helpful and insightful and appreciated the speakers that did provide handouts to download. I felt much more connected and even like the seminar was more personal...kinda strange since the technology made it impersonal. Just made to feel like you really knew the speaker like a friend.

I just want to say thanks again to everyone involved for all of your hard work in hosting this conference. I'm sure it was a blessing to many moms. I have already been able to pass on websites I got here to moms I know who have children with learning problems. Those resources make the price of the conference worthwhile alone! And I hope to share many of the ideas, as well as the information and inspiration I gained with the moms in my support group. God bless you all!

I was very impressed and blessed by the conference, I have been to many and it was still so good, so worth spending the time to listen to them! It was nice to be able to be at home so that I didn't have to leave my children for long periods of time and yet still get to do something so worthwhile. Just wanted to tell ya how much I enjoyed the conference today. After 15 years of homeschooling I am still learning stuff!!! I am still re-reading the big sticky-note where I wrote, "Clutter is a pile of unmade decisions!" Man is that profoundly simple or what?! I'm so psyched about the next conference! You guys have done such a great job!

First of all, I want to thank you for all of the time you have given to put things together for us this week! It has been a lovely time so far. The speakers have been wonderful so far, and I have enjoyed the topics. Even the sessions that I didn't think were particularly applicable to our homeschool (from reading the titles and descriptions) have been filled with information and encouragement. This has impressed me and delighted me! I have also been blessed by the fact that the ladies I have heard have shared about their love for the Father. What a joy!

May I just say that I feel SO privileged to be able to attend a homeschool conference all the way from PERU! I always enjoy hearing from other real life homeschoolers... Somehow just hearing another mom's experience or listening to different speakers expose their curriculums, just gives me the necessary kick in the pants to keep on. What an encouragement it always is to get a refresher at a conference.

Andrew Pudewa

Andrew Pudewa is the director of the Institute for Excellence in Writing and a homeschooling father of seven. Presenting throughout North America, he addresses issues relating to teaching, writing, thinking, spelling, and music with clarity, insight, practical experience, and humor. His seminars for parents, students and teachers have helped transform many a reluctant writer and have equipped educators with powerful tools to dramatically improve students' skills. Belinda Bullard

Belinda Bullard is, above all else, a child of the most high God and a colossal work in progress. She is a wife to her best friend for almost 18 years and homeschooling mother of three children, ages 14, 11, and 6. A chemical engineer by formal education, she worked in the chemical manufacturing industry for a number of years, advancing into corporate management. Before coming home to a much higher calling, Belinda worked as a training and development manager for a major food manufacturing company. Her testimony is one of turning her back on corporate expectations of women and the feminist agenda in order to proudly boast that she is a stay-at-home mom (a far more difficult task than any for which she was formally trained!).

Belinda is currently an author and the owner of A Blessed Heritage Educational Resources, a literature-based history curriculum featuring African-American presence in history. Her products include stories of various cultures to present a scripture-based, inclusive history that 'educates minds, lifts hearts, and changes lives.' She is a regular contributor to Heart of the Matter's online magazine and blog, as well as a contributor to the Carnival of Homeschooling. She also serves as adjunct faculty for two universities, teaching courses in philosophy of corporate culture, foundations of management and organizational behavior, and corporate leadership.

This may seem like an odd topic for the time of year when many are enthusiastic about getting started for a new year, but I wanted to speak to the hearts of women that there are seasons in the homeschooling journey. Not every season is spring, and the delay in seeing what we're believing God to do in our home environments does not mean that we are being denied. Mine is a word of encouragement to assure those listening that the trials we endure in our journey really are about growth and development of us and our children, and when we look on them in a different light, they really are all joy.

Cara Putman

Since the time she could read Nancy Drew, Cara has wanted to write mysteries. She started two historical novels as a teenager as part of English in her homeschool curriculum. In 2005 she attended a book signing at her local Christian bookstore. The rest, as they say, was history. There she met Colleen Coble. With prompting from her husband, Cara shared her dream with Colleen. Since those infamous words, Cara’s been writing books.

Heartsong Presents published a three book series of World War Two romances: Canteen Dreams (October 2007 – ACFW 2008 Book of the Year – Short Historical), Sandhill Dreams (May 2008), and Captive Dreams (September 2008). Love Inspired Suspense published her first romantic suspense Deadly Exposure in May 2008. The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Business Law released in May 2009 with an Ohio World War Two series for Heartsong Presents, and Trial by Fire, the sequel to Deadly Exposure, releasing in 2009 and 2010.

Heart of the Matter Online/Parenting and Home Education Conference was the fulfillment of a vision given to a pair of Amies years ago but that wouldn't begin to be fulfilled until August of 2007. They had a desire to do more for the online homeschooling community and as they prayed, God began to bless every aspect of their ministry. Heart of the Matter Online was born on January 8, 2008 and with that an online magazine just for parents and home educators. Then, the first Parenting and Home Education Conference in 2008 was successful beyond their wildest imaginations. So many received help and comfort, practical ideas and tips, and were revived to continue to do the task God has called us to do. We pray that this conference will have the same impact but even greater.
The heart of this ministry is to bridge the gap between the child and the parent, a relationship designed by God. We hope to accomplish this by presenting you with motivational speakers, encouragement and fellowship from “real” parents, and practical resources so that the parents can take 100% control of their child’s education.

Amy is a down-to-earth, Christ loving woman with a servant’s heart. She gave her life to God at the age of 21 and has strived to be a reflection of her Lord ever since. Married for 11 years, she stands in awe of the wonderful man that God gave her. She says, “I knew that we would homeschool from the moment I saw the double lines.” And that she did! She’s been teaching their 6 year old son since birth using the Classical homeschooling method.

She gave up her career as a Business Analyst for a large children’s hospital and now has chosen to fill her days with oobleck, legos, hands-on experiments, and lots of reading!

Amy has a passion for genealogy and a love for helping others trace their family trees and learn more about their roots. In fact, not only is she descendant from Mayflower Pilgrim Francis Eaton, but General Robert E. Lee and President Teddy Roosevelt are her fourth and seventh cousins, respectively.

This conservative, traditional, organized, and creative woman probably should have been born in the 1950’s but she makes the best of all circumstances. In her spare time, yes she actually has that, she loves to cook, scrapbook, spend time with her family and friends, and watch movies with her husband.

Amy’s ultimate goal is to strengthen her family in a Godly manner and to help others do the same. She is definitely a friend to call on when in need… just don’t ask her to do laundry!

Anne Elliott is an author and speaker who loves to teach women, teenagers and children and to dig into the Word of God. Her experience ranges from teaching individual and small-group Bible studies in the local church to speaking at ladies’ retreats and conferences. She has counseled unwed mothers, discipled new believers, mentored newlyweds and challenged retirees. Of course, none of these things happen on a normal day -- which is more likely to include laundry, dishes, changing diapers, walking the dog, talking on the phone, homeschooling, and surfing the 'Net.

Anne attended Baptist Bible College of Pennsylvania and Liberty University, majoring in Bible and Women’s Ministries. She has extensive training in theology, Biblical counseling, educational psychology and music. Currently living in southern Iowa, she is the wife of a public school counselor and has six children. She enjoys homeschooling and also loves being actively involved in her local church. Her hobbies include playing the piano and reading (her family and friends tease her about the stacks of books she lugs around). She loves to experiment in the kitchen and garden, but she freely admits to her share of burned recipes and dead plants.

Anne Elliott has talked to women across the country, in person and via the Internet, and she has her finger on the heartbeat of Christian women. Her goal is to convince women that they can all be “experts” simply by applying the Word of God to their lives.

Her session will be: Using the Bible As Your Primary Textbook

We know that God's Word says we are to impress His commands on our children by talking about them when we sit, walk, lie down and get up (Deuteronomy 6:4-9). That's all the time! What better tool can we have than homeschooling -- but how often our good intentions are sidetracked by "necessities" like school, chores, and schedules. Wouldn't it be nice if we could use the Bible as our primary textbook so that all our conversations and actions centered around God's Word? In this session, we'll try to make this practical. We'll talk about how to use the Bible for all subjects, including reading, grammar, math, history, science, and everything in between. We'll also talk about how to apply the Bible with our children in every hour of the day.

Linda Lacour Hobar is a mother, a motivator, a mentor, and a former missionary.

With 13 years of homeschooling three children, 17 years of ministry with Campus Crusade for Christ, and a sense of God's calling on her life, Linda brings enthusiasm, experience, inspiration, and some fun to the pages of history.

Sally is a veteran homeschool parent, but was fearful of the transition to high school. I provided three hours of individualized information and support. By the time we finished, she was relaxed and confident.

Michelle was overwhelmed with the complexities of college applications, and called me regularly for advice. We discussed strategies each step of the way, and she was able to pull together what she needed and apply before the deadline.

Jenny is a gifted home educator, but wanted an independent third party to look over her high school plan. After one hour, she felt assured to be on the right track, and had tips in many areas.

CJ wanted input on her homeschool. We identified that she was duplicating some course work, which was causing her son frustration. We were able to quickly eliminate the duplication, providing a more enjoyable school situation for her – and for her son.

Deann needed help understanding how to homeschool high school. She watched my video "Preparing to Homeschool High School" and it did the trick! She said "This is fantastic! I feel as though I was able to sit across the table from a close friend and mentor as she guided me through the process of homeschooling high school!"

Cindy called me in a complete panic. She needed a transcript "NOW!" Right then and there, we did a two hour consultation and the next day it was done! She had the transcript in hand, ready to go.

Kim had an unmotivated art student and couldn't afford college. We did a one hour consultation and scholarship search. As a result, her daughter became excited about the college process and was subsequently admitted to her first choice university, with scholarship money.

Alyson was afraid of starting the upper grades and wanted some structure in her homeschool. I scheduled lesson plans so she had a written plan of action.

Sharon decided that she didn't want to "slave over the paperwork." We spent some hours collecting data, and I wrote all the course descriptions for her. Sharon ended up with a Comprehensive Record that looked very similar to mine, and she was thrilled.

Hi y’all! My name is Marsha and I have been blessed to be the Mrs. to my David for over 13 years. We live in Texas and have been richly blessed with fun and rowdy boys– Austin (10), Noah (8) and Christian (11/12/04-8/26/08).

Our boys have been learning at home from the beginning– and I am not too proud to admit that mommy and daddy have learned a thing or twenty in the process as well!

Our family is certainly not perfect (oh boy are we not perfect!), but we do strive to make Christ the center of our home and our hearts. I guess you can say that we really do live out Philippians 4:13- I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Even on the days that require a whole truckload of reliance and His strength, I am truly and abundantly blessed with the privilege of being a wife, mother and home educator.

Lori’s mom insists that she came out of the womb ‘talking’ and has not stopped since. Lori however, insists that over the past 39 years she has learned a thing or two about listening as well. Especially, when it is God who is doing the talking.

Hearing the voice of God has led her out of a ‘desert place’ and into a garden full of praise for the King. A lifelong Christian, Lori heard the voice of God 17 years ago when she said ‘yes’ to the man who would become her husband and best friend. In those 17 years, 13 add
resses have made the journey a ‘wild ride’ at times! Finally, settling back in the Southern United States, a homecoming of sorts after having spent 4 years in college in Clemson, South Carolina…Lori says, “It is so good to be back in the south!”

Homeschooling has become the ‘new passion’ in her life. As a teacher at heart, the call to home school is something that was places on her heart 4 years ago. Not knowing a single home schooler at the time, it was truly a leap of faith….It is her hope to grow in the home school ministry to encourage and support others on this wonderful and challenging journey! Lori believes “home schoolers can give so much to each other” and is thrilled to be a part of this new online magazine for home schoolers!

People often compare Lori to the “energizer bunny,” but she is quick to comment that the energy that she has is from the LORD…”if HE is going to supply it, I’d better use it…lest He think that I don’t need it…and I do!!”

Angela DeRossett started her homeschooling journey just two years ago when her son, Xander was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. During this time she and her husband of 11 years, Jason, had been feeling pulled to step out of their comfort zones with their two older boys, Harley and Jagger, and remove them from the public school system. With a new daughter, Milan, she was scared of what lay ahead in the new world of homeschooling but knew that this is what God had
planned for her family.

Angela is currently working on her BAS through Dallas Baptist University and is majoring in Christian Ministries. After graduating she plans to go directly to graduate school to eventually obtain a Masters of Arts in Christian Education.

All things considered Angela loves coffee, reading, and exploring new things. She particularly loves Biblical Studies and is known to read three or four books on the subject at a time. Joining ‘Heart of the Matter’ is a true honor for her because it truly represents the things most near and dear to her heart: family, fellowship, homeschooling, and Christianity. Her favorite Bible verse is from Jeremiah: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11) It gives her encouragement as a military wife, a student, and a mother.

Sprittibee shares what she calls "Heartstrings for Homeschoolers” where she reminds us to stop and smell the proverbial flowers on this journey we call homeschooling. Not every day will be a great one. She admonishes us to learn to focus on the beauty of the moments God has blessed us with - for better or for worse… because our hearts are shaped by the memories we are making.

I’ve been very joyfully married to my one true BFF for over 21 years. While the storms have blown in our lives throughout the years, our relationship has remained solid and steadfast. I am ever grateful for my husband and our marriage. We’re quite the wild and crazy couple. We celebrated our 21st anniversary this past summer with a rousing evening of take-out Mexican and the just-released “Wild Hogs” DVD at home (boys were gone, of course).

We have two sweet boys; Clay Guy, age 14 and the Comedian, 13 (names were changed to protect the mostly innocent). While hubs & I weren’t following the Lord when we got married, God got a hold of us prior to having children. Hallelujah! I cannot imagine trying to raise them any other way.

Our homeschooling journey began a bit later than many. Both boys went to our neighborhood public elementary school, two blocks from home. It was a nice, small school and everyone knew everybody. When it was time for middle school, we knew there was no way we wanted them to continue in public school. Originally, we thought they’d be heading to a private Christian school. As we started doing the math, we quickly realized that our budget and the school’s tuition were never going to become friends, not even acquaintances. That started us down a somewhat convoluted path (bunny trail) towards homeschool.

You can read about the randomness of my life at Bunny Trails, although I don’t blog very often about homeschool. However, you will find a litle of most everything, befitting the name, Bunny Trails. That’s how my life seems to work - from one bunny trail to another to another, until I’m not exactly sure how I landed at my destination. The one thing I do know is that God always keeps track of me. He knows exactly which trail I’m on and never leaves me there alone. My part is to be still and listen for His direction.

Angela has a passion for teaching women God’s word. She is absolutely in love with Jesus and has an authentic faith and passion that is contagious to those around her. Most who know Angela would describe her as either “real” or “full of joy”. Angela has been married to Tony, her high school sweetheart for 13 years. They have two children, Kaitlyn, and Hannah. Angela home schools her children and loves it. Angela and her family are located in Chattanooga, TN.

Angela and her husband are co-founders of the international ministry Refresh My Soul Ministries where their vision is to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Angela has authored two Bible studies which are both in use around the world. Angela is also a contributing author to a devotional book entitled, “Standing on the Promises of God” and Radical Revolution, a devotional site for teen girls through Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Angela and her husband are Bible teachers where they have lead and built their college ministry in their home church for the last four years. Angela has also been a very active part in the development of women’s ministry and teaches middle school girls in their local Awana program.

Angela has her BS in Psychology and is actively participating in a program involving prayer and counseling. She is gifted in leading others to Christ through their pain.

Brenda is a wife to her best friend of 14 years and a mother to five precious children. She felt the calling from the Lord to be a wife and mother when she met her husband and she devotes her full attention to her children through a lifestyle decision called "homeschooling". Family is her passion and she often blogs about family traditions and her homeschooling journey at Tie That Binds Us. Since her time is dedicated to homeschooling her 5 children, she loves researching homeschool curriculum and methods and has a passion for helping others make the right choices for their homeschooling journey. Classically Cursive
The Classically Cursive series teaches a handwriting style quite similar to that of D'Nealian. It does not teach manuscript, except in a very cursory fashion in Book I, and focuses entirely on cursive. The four books offer a fair amount of content, working with letter shapes, connections, and then words, before it goes on to some Bible verses (NKJV), the ten commandments, catechism questions and attributes of God. Book I begins with nine pages of manuscript review, quickly working through the entire alphabet. From there, it offers a series one page drills for each letter in cursive, first 26 pages of lowercase (tracing a letter, writing the letter without tracing, practicing connections by writing the letter twice, and then using the letters in other words), and then by going over the alphabet again in uppercase (where the letters are first traced, written without tracing, and then used at the beginnings of names). After this practice, students practice writing the names of the books of the Bible, and learn a few key facts about the Bible, as well as the Lord's Prayer. The book concludes with several pages of instruction on forming letters, both in manuscript and cursive.
