Team Belives Browns Give Up Causing Loss to Denver

BEREA, Ohio -- With an extended weekend off to think about the state of the team, there are players within the Cleveland Browns' locker room who believe teammates quit during last week's 34-30 loss to the Denver Broncos.

In the aftermath of the Denver game, which Cleveland lost after giving up 21 fourth-quarter points, Browns running back Jamal Lewis was the first to bring up the subject of quitting. On Monday, as Cleveland began its week of preparation for next Monday's game against Buffalo, several players agreed with his sentiments.

"When you have a team like that that comes into our house and we're capable of beating them, that's the first thing that comes to mind,'' wide receiver Josh Cribbs said Monday. "We can't figure out what man, but that's what it looked like -- some guys quit. ... We know if everybody didn't quit, we would have won that ballgame.''

The Browns became just the fifth team in NFL history to lose back-to-back games after holding a second-half lead of at least 13 points. Cleveland gave up three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to Denver last Thursday, just four days after allowing 24 unanswered points to the Baltimore Ravens.

At 3-6, Cleveland is a long shot for a playoff berth. That may be why Lewis, a nine-year veteran who is rarely outspoken, decided to lash out about his teammates. He also said last week that some teammates "need to check their egos at the door."

"[Lewis'] input is very valuable to this team,'' Browns linebacker and team captain Andra Davis said. "So if he says something like that, then guys really need to check their egos."

Cleveland came into the season with playoff hopes. There are veterans on the roster who have won a Super Bowl, such as Lewis with the Ravens and linebacker Willie McGinest with the New England Patriots, but there is also a lot of young players who have never won consistently in the NFL.

Cribbs said he hopes Lewis' words resonate within the locker room and spark a run during the second half of the season.

"He goes out there and busts his tail every day, every game, and I do the same,'' Cribbs said of Lewis. "It hurts when people don't do the same and don't show the same will and don't show the same fire and desire for winning.

"It's a shame sometimes, but we just have to pull together as a team and weed out those guys and play the rest of the season out."

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson VS Forrest Griffin UFC

It appears that the “Big Plans” UFC President Dana White had in store for Quinton “Rampage” Jackson do indeed include a stint as coach on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF).

White made the major announcement during the TUF 6 Finale earlier this evening … kinda.

That’s because Forrest Griffin was the coach who was actually officially announced. His counterpart will be revealed during the Video Game Awards broadcast at 9 p.m. on Sunday, December 9, on SpikeTV.

It’s widely believed that Rampage will get the nod, showcasing two of the most colorful and charismatic characters within the organization on national television.

White also mentioned that the two coaches will fight one another sometime after the conclusion of the show. TUF 7, which begins to shoot in January and will debut on SpikeTV sometime in April 2008, will feature 16 up-and-coming middleweight (185 pounds) fighters.

It should not matter that Jackson and Griffin are in the 205-pound class — there’s not a pool of bankable stars at that weight to carry a program that has been struggling in the ratings.

Jackson and Griffin should provide the spark (and personality) necessary to get the mixed martial arts reality series back on track.

Both fighters are currently recovering from injuries in their most recent bouts. Rampage hurt his hand training for Dan Henderson and Griffin underwent shoulder surgery after his sensational upset win over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

It’s fair to say that both should be fit at the conclusion of the show next year.

In addition, Dana White promised “significant and exciting changes” to the overall format of the show. It should be interesting to see exactly what changes are in store but until we get the exact details we are left to guess, but hopefully these “exciting” changes will add some life into TUF 7 and the quality of its fights and match ups.

One thing we do know is that with Rampage and Griffin as the coaches this next installment certainly won’t be lacking personality.

College Bowl Starts off Rough, But Is Sailing Along

Things couldn't have been shakier for college bowl this year. The trouble started when the team lost their adviser Rick Haught last year.

"Rick brought the whole thing to life. He was the prime mover behind it," professor Kurt Hackemer said.

Since Haught left, college bowl has been without an adviser. Graduate student Jon Radermacher, who is participating in college bowl for his fifth year, said he is working with coordinator Kristin Hoesing with Program Council to find an adviser for college bowl.

Without an adviser, Program Council was left to organize the campus tournament. Relying on another source to organize the campus event proved to be difficult and changing dates made it harder to get the word out for potential competitors.

They were also unable to get question readers and moderators who have consistently done it in previous years, including Hackemer.

"It's such a fun time. There's some razzing back and forth, especially when you've had students in a civil war course and they miss a civil war question," Hackemer said.

In years past, Radermacher said the tournament drew in eight to 12 teams of four competitors. This year they had four teams.

The top eight individual competitors from any team are chosen to participate on the regional team. Out of the eight, five participate in the regional tournament.

Because the pool was smaller from which to build a team for the regional tournament, it was difficult to pick members that would be successful at the regional level.

Only Radermacher and senior Andrea Peterson are attending regionals after going through the campus tournaments.

"It's not just the four smartest people that make the team," Hackemer said. "A good team will have a person who is good with current events, someone good with literature and those who know science and history."

But none-the-less the college bowl is still exciting and will be packed full of nothing but awesome football and crazed fans.

Montreal Canadians Get Sued, But Still Persue Cup

The City of Montreal has settled with merchants whose stores were ransacked during the 1993 Stanley Cup riot.

An all-news channel reported today the city will pay a total of $550,000 to storeowners and their insurers.

Of that amount, $200,000 will go for legal fees.

Many businesses were trashed 14 years ago after the Montreal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup by defeating the Los Angeles Kings.

Many merchants are not satisfied with the amount.

Almost 40 lawsuits were filed against the city after the rampage amid charges that Montreal police acted too slowly to contain the violence.

Those lawsuits sought about $2 million in damages.

The Canadiens have not won the Stanley Cup since but continue to try.

Serra Withdraws from UFC 79 Due to Injury!

UFC President Dana White announced Thursday that Matt Serra will have to withdraw from the UFC 79 card on December 29th due to an injury sustained during training earlier this week.

The current UFC welterweight champion, who was scheduled to fight Matt Hughes on the year-end card, suffered a herniated disc in his lower back on Monday following a routine training session in his Long Island gym.

“This is devastating news because they were so looking forward to fighting each other," said White.
“Unfortunately injuries happen and I look forward to Serra recovering quickly, and to getting him back into the Octagon.”

Serra had just finished a Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling training session and was demonstrating a move when he fell to the floor in excruciating pain. Serra went to the hospital and underwent an MRI, which revealed the herniated disc in his lower back.

“This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do,” said Serra. “I’ve never had a back injury before; I could hardly get off the MRI table. There is no way I can train through this, and I’m devastated, especially because this was such an important fight. I was looking forward to fighting Matt Hughes. All my training was going phenomenally until Monday – All I can do now is to get better and to fight again as soon as possible.”

Despite the disappointment of Serra-Hughes being scrapped, UFC 79 still features the long-awaited superfight between the two greatest 205-pound fighters of all-time, Chuck 'The Iceman' Liddell and Wanderlei 'THe Axe Murderer' Silva, as well as an intriguing bout between Lyoto Machida and PRIDE star Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, who will be making his UFC debut.
