Special Tax Break Available for New Car Purchases This Year

IR-2009-30, March 30, 2009

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service announced today that taxpayers who buy a new passenger vehicle this year may be entitled to deduct state and local sales and excise taxes paid on the purchase on their 2009 tax returns next year.

“For those thinking about buying a new car this year, this deduction may give them a little more drive to make their purchase this year,” said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman. “This deduction enables taxpayers to buy now and get cash back later on their tax returns.”

The deduction is limited to the state and local sales and excise taxes paid on up to $49,500 of the purchase price of a qualified new car, light truck, motor home or motorcycle.

The amount of the deduction is phased out for taxpayers whose modified adjusted gross income is between $125,000 and $135,000 for individual filers and between $250,000 and $260,000 for joint filers.

IRS also alerted taxpayers that the vehicle must be purchased after Feb. 16, 2009, and before Jan. 1, 2010, to qualify for the deduction.

The special deduction is available regardless of whether a taxpayer itemizes deductions on their return. The IRS reminded taxpayers the deduction may not be taken on 2008 tax returns.

The new Chevy Camaro has hit the showrooms! This is definitely one hot car and are pre-sold for the most part.

This is what a retro remake should look like. It is no wonder Pontiac took a dive with the remake of the GTO, but everyone knows Chevy has always been the big brother for GM.

The movie "Transformers" may have brought some attention to the new Camaro, but the retro remake will keep the baby boomers in the Chevy showrooms!

I do have one question though. I work at a Pontiac store with multiple lines to include Buick and GMC, but Pontiac has always been our best seller so why get rid of an American Heritage like Pontiac? I know you have to look at overseas sales and all that, but it does not seem right. Anyway, this post was to hale the Chevy Camaro, not to cry about Pontiac.

A PCV valve (positive crankcase ventilation) is responsible for evacuating gases from inside the engine's crankcase. The older the truck, the more important it is that the PCV valve is working properly as leaking gases increase with the age of the vehicle. The EGR valves helps your vehicle burn fuel more efficiently by recirculating some of the exhaust and putting it through combustion again. This part is essential to the emissions system and must be replaced once it goes bad. Another essential part to the emissions system is the oxygen sensor, which determines if the air fuel mixture is too rich or too lean.

Interior Essentials

Don't neglect the interior of your vehicle. Replace your cabin air filter to keep the air inside your truck fresh and breathable.
Replace that burned-out dome light so you can find that change that fell between the seats. Fixing the all the small interior problems will help restore your truck to it's original glory. You'll make it feel like the first day you drove it off the lot.

If you go shopping in a car like this, where do you park? Do you park at the end of the parking lot and walk, do you drop someone at the door and come back to get them, or what? I see people with much less expensive cars that walk a quarter mile after parking at the very end of the parking lot, but this just gives a target for people to aim carts at.

I have always believe in saving money when it comes to buying a car and what better way than to buy a Certified Program Car.

Many think Program cars are demos from the dealership, but a Program car is one that has been leased by a company or Rental Car Agency. They drive them a set number of miles, turn them in and dealers buy these cars at auction. A Program Car sounds much better than a Rental Car, but they are essentially one in the same.

Closing Techniques For Car Salesmen

There are several different Closing Tools or Techniques taught to Car Salesman, but I believe it all comes down to one! This is just one of the steps in the road to the sale, but the one many focus on. Be sure to check out the 10 Steps Road To The Sale.

I believe if you do a proper meet and greet and interview, you will land a customer on the correct vehicle at the correct price and payment. If you follow the process from start to finish, Closing The Deal is the easiest part. Also, the biggest suggestion for Car Salesman is a proper Walk Around and Demonstration of vehicle operations and features. Remember this, Function-Feature-Benefit. When doing a walk around, you have to tell the option or Function, What it Does, and the one many salesman miss--how it will Benefit the consumer. For Instance, this car has dual stage air bags which will come out at a speed according to the severity of the impact; the benefit to you Mr/Mrs Customer is that in a small fender bender, the air bag wont come out at a rate that will injure you more than the accident like earlier designed air bags. Many salesman will say; This car has front and side airbags. What if you were to add that the National Highway Safety and Transportation Administration has proven in test results and real world accidents that side air bags were proven to save lives in side impact accidents. You would want to be protected from an unfortunate accident in the side wouldn't you Mr/Mrs Customer? This builds VALUE!!! Value in the vehicle means more money in your pocket. Customers do not mind paying for information. If you build a penny more value than the list price of the vehicle, the customer will pay list price! If you lack information concerning features and benefits, you will get "I'm really not ready to make a decision," "I have a doctors appointment to get to," "My wife or husband or dog needs to look at it." Or Worse, "How much are you going to take off the sticker."

Anyway, that's enough on that, now for some Closing Techniques:
THE BEN FRANKLIN CLOSE or BALANCE SHEET CLOSE:
This is where you list things the customer liked about the vehicle in one column and dislikes in the other column. This will let you know real quick if you are on the correct vehicle. If there are more negatives than positives, you have some work to do. This is where you bring out every positive you gave the customer; you remember, Mr/Mrs Customer, the side air bags are a positive, the anti lock 4 wheel disc brakes, etc. etc. If you presented the vehicle correctly, you should be able to fill up a sheet with positives.

REDUCE IT TO THE RIDICULOUS CLOSE:
This is where when a customer says you are $30 dollars too high in payment. You break it down by the day. Mr/Mrs Customer, that is only $1 dollar per day. Everyone blows $1 per day. Drink one less coke per day.

TRADE IN CLOSE:
This is great for those with a Trade In. After you pick a vehicle and are getting ready to write up the trade, have the customer come with you and tell you about their trade in. Be sure and touch any little scratches or dents without saying anything. The customer is going to tell you everything they have done to the vehicle. "I put a new Transmission, new brakes, head gasket, etc. etc." Make sure you write everything they have done to the vehicle down, Especially things they have done in the last 6 months to 1 year. Even ask them how much money it cost them to perform these standard repairs. Now, when you get to the table and you are $50 dollars away on payment, you have some ammo. "Well, Mr. Customer, you said you put a new transmission that cost $2000, brakes cost $300, Misc. cost $100, that means you have put $2400 in your trade in the last year, correct?" They will always reply, Yes. "Well, that comes out to $200 per month on Standard Maintenance items, that if not performed would make your car worthless. This new car is under Factory Warranty and is going to save you money at a cost of only $50 a month." Or whatever it comes out to be. It could be $200 more in payment and makes sense to buy the new car instead of repairing the old car.

This is just a few Closing Techniques that may help you, but be creative. If the customer is saying "NO", You have nothing to lose.

1:30 Salesman sales car to your cousin. Wow, I will never live this down, but try to lessen the impact by saying "it was a distant cousin," I have not seen them in years!

2:00 Catch cousin alone and tell them "Give me my house key, you are going to have to find you another place to live!"

2:30 Finally catch a customer that seems very interested in a GMC Yukon. After the test drive, the customer says, "My company is buying the vehicle for me and they usually get it directly from the factory, I just wanted to make sure I liked it."

4:00 Get paged to back lot (Customer Waiting) which is not uncommon, but it is about 1/2 mile walk and golf carts are nowhere to be found so take off walking. See Salesman hiding behind cars laughing because they made up the fake page!

4:30 Call doctor and ask him symptoms of high blood pressure!

5:00 All Sales Personnel are needed on showroom floor. Sales Manager says, "We are going to have a lot party." Great finally something fun for today! I find out a lot party is where you rearrange all cars on the lot. You have got to be kidding!

5:30 to 9:00 work with customer on a new GMC Acadia--had trouble closing the deal and had to split with another salesman to close the deal. I was supposed to get off at 8:00, but at least I sold one. The other salesman tells me, "Your part of the commission is $50 dollars!

9:30 Go to Wal-Mart pharmacy to use their blood pressure machine

9:45 See your cousin that purchased a car from your dealership. Told him the car he bought had been wrecked! Maybe his blood pressure will be as high as mine.

The next time you go to your local dealership and it seems if all the salesman are not in the best of moods, realize customers do come first, but it could have been a rough day! Tomorrow, we will try again. No wonder so many car salesman have grey hair.

If you are new to selling cars, remember one thing. WOMEN make the DECISION when buying a new car! I see new salesman start talking to customers and leave the women out of the conversation. This will NEVER lead to a car sale! PERIOD!!! Do not pay too much attention so that the husband is left out or feels you are hitting on his wife, but definitely talk to the wife. If you ever notice when figures are presented to prospective car buyers, men always look at their wives before answering. They can tell by the wife's body language whether she thinks its a good deal or not. I know many men are saying, "I wear the pants in my family." Yea right, but your wife probably picked them out for you. Women always get the new cars too. They may say, this is a car for my husband, but women get the new cars and men drive the old ones. All I am saying, pay attention to the women when negotiating a car deal.

This should be a hot topic! Everyone says that women are taken advantage of when buying a car, but think again. Women are more informed than men when buying anything. They do there homework, and are not afraid to speak their mind. I found that when I was selling cars, women always negotiated the best deal. Women always use the "I have to talk to my husband first" line, and it works! Lets give women credit where credit is do.

Trade Difference Car Deal Explained

When buying a car, many customers are confused when presented numbers that have the phrase "Trade Difference" attached to them. I will break the phrase Trade Difference down so you can negotiate with the best of them.

Trade Difference is used by many dealerships so that you can avoid the "Your Upside Down" term. Many customers owe more on their trade than what it's worth, but this is just life. Car Salesman are upside down on their trades as well so don't feel bad.

If you are buying a $20,000 car and your trade in is worth $10,000--just to make math easy. You would have a Trade Difference of $10,000, plus tax, title, tag, and payoff. Guess what, many are confused by this and think this is the amount they will be financing. Lets say you owe $15,000 on your trade for simplicity again. Now, you take the trade difference of $10,000 plus your payoff of $15,000 and your new balance is $25,000 plus tax, title, license of course.

In most states if not all, you only pay tax on Trade Difference. So in the above case, you would pay tax on $10,000. You already payed tax on the car you are trading so it only makes since to pay on the difference, but many are not aware of this. Toyota Hilux Engine - A Brief History

The Toyota Hilux engine has changed many times since 1968 when the Hilux first debuted. Back then, it was powered by a small, 1.5 litre 4-cylinder. It has since evolved many times over with some models maintaining a 4-cylinder engine although now they're bigger, more powerful and even turbo or diesel powered (or both) while some models made a jump to larger displacement V6 engines. This article will provide a brief timeline into the history of the Toyota Hilux engine.

Toyota R Engine
The R engine was the first family of engines to grace the Toyota Hilux. The R engine was a 4-cylinder petrol (gasoline) that was used in various forms from 1968 to 1995. The 2R, 3R, 8R, 8R-C, 8R-E, 12R, 18R, 18R-C, 18R-E, 20R, 22R, 22R-E, and 22R-TE were all the variations of the R family of engines to be used in the Hilux. In the beginning, the 2R was a 1.5 litre that grew and had various factory modifications through the 2.4 litre 22R-E used in 1995. The 22R has a reputation as one of the best Toyota Hilux engine ever used for longevity and reliability of easily being able to clock 500,000 kilometers (300,000 miles).

Toyota VZ Engine
The VZ was the first family of V6 engines ever used in the Toyota Hilux. The VZ engine ran on petrol (gasoline) and all versions featured electronic fuel injection. The Hilux made use of the 3VZ from 1988 to 1995 at which point it used the 5VZ. Displacement increased from 3.0 to 3.4 litres and power jumped from 112 kW (150 hp) to 142 (190 hp). The 5VZ (or the 5VZ-FE to be exact) has been touted as the best V6 Toyota Hilux engine ever used for its reliability, light weight, and excellent fuel economy. Hilux owners with the 3VZ engine often seek out a 5VZ to install rather than rebuilding or replacing a 3VZ with problems or high kilometers.

Toyota RZ Engine
In 1996, some models of Hilux went back to 4-cylinders with the RZ. The RZ was a family of 4-cylinder engines that consisted of the 1RZ-E, 2RZ-FE and 3RZ-FE. Their displacements were 2.0 litres, 2.4 litres, and 2.7 litres respectively and they produced 78 kW (105 hp), 106 kW (142 hp), and 112 kW (150 hp) also respectively. The 1RZ saw limited production mostly in Japan and select parts of Asia. The 2RZ first came to life in 1995 and ceased production in 2004 (2004 being the last model year this engine was used in a Hilux). Like the 2RZ, the 3RZ also came to life in 1995 and it's still in use to this day.

P0171 and P0174 Codes - Don't Replace an Oxygen Sensor Before Reading This

So your car's CEL (Check Engine Light) is on and you had the codes scanned at a local parts store. Your car has either a P0171, P0174 lean fault code or both stored in the computer, these codes are based on Oxygen Sensor (O-2) readings. A lean code or codes indicate that there's too much oxygen in the exhaust. Remember parts stores have employees that have good intentions but they may not have the experience necessary to interpret what the trouble codes really mean. These codes are based on oxygen measurements in the exhaust. A common mistake with lean codes is to replace the oxygen sensors. This could be a very expensive mistake that will not fix the problem. Especially if both codes are present, because the chance of both O-2 sensors failing at the same time is very unlikely.

Most likely the cause is a vacuum leak. A vacuum leak can be caused from a vacuum hose, intake gasket or maybe even a leak in the air intake hose from the MAF (Mass Air Flow Sensor). Listen for a hissing sound that may lead you to the source of the problem. Some technicians will use a propane bottle with a hose attachment to help pinpoint vacuum leaks. With today's computers it's not quite as easy to check for vacuum leaks this way because the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) will compensate quickly for the added fuel and a change in idle is harder to notice. Oxygen sensor readings can be monitored with a scan tool while checking for leaks with propane, by looking for increased readings when enriching the mixture. Another way technicians can check for vacuum leaks is with a smoke test. By introducing smoke into a vacuum hose on the engine, the leak will be revealed when the smoke escapes from the problem area.

Aftermarket air filters that use oil on the element can sometimes damage the MAF. Over oiling the air filter may allow some excess to get on the MAF sensor wire or element. This can alter the reading, fooling the ECU into seeing more or less air flow therefore changing the air/fuel mixture incorrectly. I once worked on a car that would not start that had a problem with a MAF. When looking at the wire in the MAF, there was a burned piece of trash that made it's way past the air filter. After cleaning the sensor the car ran perfectly. The ash that was on the MAF sensor wire was altering the reading by enriching the mixture so much that the car could not run. After talking with the customer, he said the air filter was just changed. This was obviously when some trash got into the air intake hose that settled on the hot wire of the MAF.

Fuel Pressure could also cause a lean condition. If the fuel filter is clogged or the fuel pump pressure is low, there could be higher level of oxygen in the exhaust also. Most of the time though, the ECU will compensate for the reduced fuel volume. So this is one of the least likely causes of a lean code.

Auto Repossessions Repo's At All Time High!

Auto Repossessions are at an all time high, but the Repo Man is getting left out in the cold! Customers are returning their cars, trucks, and SUV's at an alarming rate, but are bringing them to the dealerships to drop them off voluntarily! It will still show as a Repossession on your credit, but what are customers to do when they cannot afford the car note anymore.

Here are a few tips that may help someone that is going through this dilemma:

1. Make sure to call the lender and try to work something out. You never know until you call, but this is the first thing to consider. The lender really does not want to repossess your car because they will most likely take a loss when they sell it--and remember, you get charged the losses taken when it sells!

2. Try to trade your car for something more affordable. Remember to check your ego at the gate and ask your salesman for help in finding something that will accomplish your goals. It may not be what you WANT right now, but may be what you NEED! Don't take that the wrong way, just trying to help.

3. Advertise your car in the newspaper or Internet to try and sell it to get out from under the notes. Here is something creative--if you get an offer that is within $3000-$4000 of payoff, go buy a car with a cheaper note and apply the rebate to your payoff to get the title cleared so you can sell. Make sure when you buy your new car that you get a car payment that is manageable.

These are just a few ideas to keep you out of Repossession status. Don't be afraid to get creative because times like these call for creative thinkers. New Car and Used Car Sales are going up each month as well so there is light at the end of the tunnel. And, Never say that it cant get any worse because it can always get worse!
