happy new year dear people. may it bring you peace, love, abundance of creativity and above all good health.

it has been a very long time since i’ve even visited these pages and finally after a whirlwind kind of a busy 2007 and just before the 2008 has a chance to do the same i would like to say a huuge thank you to all of you who have visited this little pocket in cyberspace and for all of your kind words that have really meant much to me.

this blog started as a kind of an anonymous sketchbook where i would collect wonderful things that inspire me while completing my jewellery course. and although i am happy to say i’ve completed my course in november it did take a toll on this little haven of mine.
i’ve met some wonderful, creative, inspiring people through this blog and i need to tell you it is simply a treat to visit your creative worlds.

i have made a new year's resolution that ’08 is going to be about tying loose ends (all of those things i’ve swept under the carpet over time, some even for years!) and of new beginnings.

in that vain, and although reluctantly, i will need to say goodbye to ‘ma roulotte’ blog. i will keep it up as my little archive of gorgeous finds but it is simply the time to start new ventures.

i am preparing a web site to support my jewellery practice that should be ready very soon, end of this month i hope. so please stop by when you get a chance (www.djurdjicakesic.com).

Before the invention of the mirror the primary way that humans were able to view thermselves was through the medium of shadow. The shadow has a dual nature, revealing aspects of both non being and existence. Shadows are fleeting and ethereal representations that have a direct relationship with light and substance. They absorb light, and yet are defined by its absence.

Boxes are still invading most corners of my home and it makes me think quite a bit about the huge quantity of cardboard that I am surrounded by.
Funnily, I have stumbled upon this exscuisite work that transforms cardboard into precious and seemingly fragile pieces of jewellery. How very timely.

Ritsuko Ogura uses cardboard in her jewellery giving new life to a material that is normally used for packaging and then discarded after use. She is attracted to the idea that cardboard does not catch people's attention as a material in itself, as opposed to Japanese paper that is inherently beautiful, so she is able to give this poor material dignity by transforming it into sculptures for the body. She exploits the difficulty in cutting cardboard to her advantage, using this drawback to create new modes of expression. The finished pieces resemble delicate lace-like structures(…). From here.

The key word in Morel's jewellery is mobility. Indeed, of vital importance to the artist, is that a jewel evokes movement and change. The mobile elements in her pieces create a softness, interacting with the body in a playful movement. This movement contributes to creating new forms in the pieces themselves when worn. Mobility also in change: nothing must remain unaltered or static for Morel. Inflexibility and rigidity are words that she totally rejects. Her pieces are often adjustable in size. A ring changes to a smaller or larger size giving the option of modifying its properties along with the transformation our bodies go through in time. A necklace may reconfigure its length to become longer or shorter to adapt itself to the body in another form, thus evolving continuously. Her latest works include pieces made with thread, spun into mysterious web-like pendants or brooches. These almost express the desire to take us within the piece, in a realm of the unknown, with the purpose of discovering its core. From here.

I guess 'mobility' and 'cardboard' express very accurately where I am at in this point in time, so no wonder that I was drawn to these pieces.

oh, this is hard…five things about me…

1. i love the australian sky. during the day, the blue expanse that it offers…and then the magical milky way on a crystal clear night. pure magic! (i have been in australia for well over a decade now but i am still mesmerised by it!)

2. fortune telling: i hold that i can read a turkish coffee cup (that is, kind of like reading tea leafs: turning the cup upside-down the patterns are created by the coffee “mud”- hm, i do not know the appropriate word in english but you get the idea).
it is a pure fantasy really… something like recognising the shapes “drawn” by clouds…
i've been told that i’m good at it ;)

3. i dream in three languages.

4. maps of all kinds (topographical, cognitive, imagined..) are potent sources of inspiration for me. in one way or another they seem to find their way into my work.

5. music: i cannot work or live in silence. music is my magic carpet.
oh, and i love the radio! i am so glad that the video didn’t kill the radio star after all.

I’ll be out of action for sometimes as a pretty big move is around the corner. But I will try to visit your inspirational blogs and flickr pages for some sanity (I am preparing myself for the inevitable: living out of boxes and a huge mess until everything find its place again). Also, I will try to post when possible and I do hope that before too long everything will be back to a more comfortable pace.
