Down at the Ranch club Saturday night for Brushtons birthday Alex Couey was showing me some of his shots of the Slants at Neurolux Friday. I will post one or two when he gives me copies.

The more I think about the Slants the more convinced I become. They have everything it takes to "make it". They have songs, first of all. Great lyrics, a great look, a great singer and frontman. They cut across a lot of stylistic boundaries and do so in a way that doesn't sound forced. It's just a natural outcome of diverse people getting together and giving it their all.

My dreams of eclipsing 100 play titles in a play week were torpedoed somewhat by the night crews intransigence, but Thursdays "ALL VINYL" playday made up for it. That is why there are titles like Pearl Harbor, and Dave Van Ronk on the list. I know that is not going to do anyone any "good" as far as instore spins are concerned, but it was sure great to listen to.

Marcus Eaton Trio

Marcus is very, very good. And with his new line up he is on his way to something very, very special. It is early in the game for this group, but when they get going they are really something to witness. I don't know the new songs yet, but they take the best of Marcus solo work and ramp it up a notch. The playing is all first rate, but they have not jelled together as a group yet. But they will. you can feel it. There were a couple times that they were catching fire. As they play together more and experience more together, they will learn about each other, start to play and grow together, begin to anticipate and read each other, and then they will be about as big as you can get nowadays.
I would like to know Marcus Eaton writes about. He is no Sting, which is not an insult, because Sting can be pretty bad sometimes. Next time I see him I will quiz him about it.
It is an honor to know Marcus, because he represents this town and himself so well. And it was great to have him in the store. Be sure to see him at Pengillys on Friday, because the opportunities to see him that close will be few and far between in the future.

Marcus Eaton will be in the store tonight, doing his thing and playing music with his Trio at 7PM. I have not spoken to him yet, but I believe he will be playing a lot of material for his upcoming album, but I'm sure he will speak to the crowd as well.

Jeff is down there right now, and you can go too. It's free, there is a band playing, and the hunks and honeys are winding down. It is warm, and there is a fountain. And curiously enough we have so much vinyl here that we had to stick on the floor in boxes. get it. there is some great stuff in those boxes, so much so that I have had to totally ignore them so I can remain financially solvent, and leave things for vinyl fans to buy.

Is it too early to nominate Beck Hansen for the hall of fame? The hall of fame for what is the only thing left to debate. He belongs in so many.
A lot of our customers were totally excited by Steve Earle coming to town for the first time since 1987.
We have a lot of cold music in the top ten: Cold Play, Sigur Ros, Dark Lotus. Or maybe that's cool music.

Reckless Kelly second week in a row, thanks to their 5th of July party. Fleet Foxes back, Jeremiah would have been higher, but we got his cd back late in the week, and it is beginning to pick up momentum again.

Lounge Of Music

One of our customers profiled the store on his blog, called Lounge Of Music. Go there. Dustin is a music head, who is passionate, unjaded, and enthusiastic, the way a lot of us in this business started out. He has spent a fair amount of time in the store, and it shows in the earlier entries.
Here he writes about himself:

I'm enamored by the old school stuff, I think HAM radios, The United States Merchant Marines and Morse code are timeless gems of a sort. I like Adventure stories and little Norman Rockwell type places that have barber shop poles, covered bridges, old brick buildings and little traffic. I like coffee shops that aren't a chain store, even if the coffee isn't that great. I like old cartoons like Woody Woodpecker and Mighty Mouse, and I'm a big fan of the Incredible Hulk. I like the Hulk because it wasn't about a person trying to save or fight the world, but fight to save themselves. My favorite sports teams are the Detroit Lions and the Kansas City Royals. I like reading about interesting individuals from history, like The Red Baron, Houdini, Billy the Kid, George Washington and others. I'd rather write my birth year in Roman Numerals than numbers, because it looks a bit more epic. One day mankind will be gone, but I hope in that event, that the dogs and horses survive to live on. I despise the rat race even though I'm stuck in the middle of it most of the time. I wish the internet had an IDIOT filter because it seems to draw in a lot of annoying people who bray like donkeys.

So, accusations of plagiarism aside, it is indeed shocking to see a local act supplant a major international band from attaining the number one spot on any chart, even one as humble as ours. But I assure you, this is legit. Fortified by a very successful record release instore concert here in the store on Thursday night, our man Jeremiah James edges out Coldplay for the number one slot on our bestseller list.

Subpop lands another top ten with Wolf Parade, Katy Perry edges out the deluxe Dennis Wilson for the last spot in the top ten, which is pretty amazing considering the price difference.
