We received 45 entries from students in sixth through twelfth grades from all over the capital region. TAG and TAG Jr. members judged the contest using an anonymous mathematical process. We removed the authors’ names from each of the poems before judging and gave each poem a numerical ranking from 1-10. We then averaged the rankings to find the winners. The first place winner is Emy Blohm, 6th grade, with her poem titled “As a Rose”. The second place winner is also Emy Blohm with her poem titled “Who I Am.” In third place is Ansley Chlastawa, 10th grade, with her poem called “Could It Be?” All of the submitted poems have been on display in the Teen Area of the library for National Poetry Month in April.

******
We want to know what YOU think! The novel narrates Janie Crawford's ripening from a vibrant but voiceless teenage girl into a woman with her finger on her own destiny. The novel breathes and bleeds a whole life's worth of urgent experience.

The Big Read is designed to address the decline in literary reading by inviting entire communities to come together to discover the transformative power of literature. Around the two-county area a number of libraries will be hosting book discussion groups, musical events, movies and other artistic events centering on the book's theme, setting and era.

At our library, the movie version of Their Eyes Were Watching God, starring Halle Berry, will be shown on Wednesday, May 9th at 6:30 pm. The next evening, on Thursday, May 10th at 7 pm, the fabulous jazz group Sonny & Perley will perform music of the era. On Monday, May 21st, our Adult Morning Book Group will discuss the book at 10 am.

The library will have a display highlighting The Big Read project with a limited number of free copies of the book for the public.

For more information click here.

******
We want to know what YOU think! You'll need to have your own feed reader (bloglines, google reader, etc.). Once you set that up you can "subscribe" to this blog and get our posts instantly!

I'm also working on setting up an RSS feed for our event calendar. There are still some bugs that need to be worked out, but as soon as it's done I'll update you here.

******
We want to know what YOU think! To request an item through the library's website, search for the item you want and click "Request First Available Copy." You will need your library card number and your PIN. If you are unsure what your PIN is, ask a librarian. New cardholders may not reserve on-line until one week after their card is issued.

You will be notified when the item is available for you, but you can always check your account if you just can't wait for our phone call/mailing. If the item is ready it will say it's on hold for you and you can come and pick it up. If you call us ahead of time (at least half an hour) you can even pick up your books through our drive through window and not have to walk in the cold!

These services and more are available to all library card holders. If you don't have a library card, get one today! What are you waiting for?

******
We want to know what YOU think!
