Their biggest need going into the off-season was getting that defensive line (who ranked 31st against the run) sured up. Well, they signed New York Giant former first round pick William Joseph, who has done nothing in this league and they signed Lions castoff defensive end Kalimba Edwards.
Are those two players really supposed to get that defensive line back to respectability? Who knows. Turdell Sands signed a huge contract after his good performance in the 2006 season, then his play really declined last year. However, it was reported that his mother has passed and he was battling some injuries early on in the season. So the jury is still out on him. Tommy Kelly got paid this off-season, now being the highest paid defensive tackle in the league when he has never started a full season at the position. He showed good ability at the "3" technique (which he will play from now on) when given The chance, but that was been taken up by Warren Sapp the past few years. Sapp had only great things to say about Kelly, and expects him to really take off and show the league how good he is when Kelly starts this year.

Is that good enough reason to take a running back over arguably the best player in the whole draft in Glenn Dorsey? Head Coach Lane Kiffin's offense was most associated with the run this past year, ranking 6th amongst the rest of the league. Justin Fargas managed to run for 1,009 yards only starting six games, while LaMont Jordan and Dominic Rhodes also had success both having a couple 100 yard rushing games. Not to mention, Raiders got a steal in the 4th round of 2007's NFL draft when they got Michael Bush who was expected to be a first rounder until his injury starting out the 06' season. With 3 capable running backs, a wild card in Michael Bush, a poor defensive line, and an offensive line in need of a premier left tackle to protect their franchise quarterback, Raiders took running back Darren Mcfadden 4th overall in this years draft.

Why? Well, he ran a 4.3 40 (which we all should gets Al Davis excited as e has great interest in fast players), was a great running back for Arkansas rushing for over 1500 yards last year, and 10+ touchdowns to go with it. He also has exceptional hands, which gives him some boost when is comes to ranking him. Does that warrant taking McFadden over Glenn Dorsey, who would have instantly been able to come in and start next to Tommy Kelly and provide a much needed spark to this below average defense. Lane Kiffin, who even said that he would like to take a defensive player with the pick or trade down, said that the Raiders don't need McFadden with it's stable of more than capable running backs. Take that however you want, whether you think it means he said that so no one would suspect the Raiders would take Mcfadden or as if it was the truth. After they drafted Mcfadden, Kiffin then said he was their guy all along.
<img src="http://espndeportes-akamai.espn.go.com/2003/photos2007/0101/w_AlDavisLaneKiffin_t.jpg"align="left"WEIGHT=500HEIGHT=500>
There is something going on in Oakland, and it probably has to do with the Owner/General Manager Al Davis spending all his money and dishing out no more authority to his head coach(s). Last year, Raiders drafted smart getting a solid player in Zach Miller (starting tight end), and drafted JaMarcus Russell number one overall. Then they took into account the offensive line and defensive line needed help and used two of their three third round picks on lineman (Quinten Moses, Mario Henderson). Although Moses didn't make the team, it was a smart pick and he was believed to be a good player who unfortunately didn't work out. Henderson showed some good technique and was an above average pass blocker in college, who will be competing with Cornell Green and Paul McQuistan for right tackle going into the 2008 season.

It was obvious that Al let Kiffin have some say last year, as key areas were addressed in the draft. However, after the 2007 season ended, Al wasn't too impressed by his rookie coach who only went 4-12. Al had enough when Kiffin went ahead and told Rob Ryan he would be let go as defensive coordinator and could go speak with other teams. Ryan went to Al to thank him for the opposrtunity to be with the organization, and Al basically had it there and let Ryan know he was staying with the Raiders. Then there was a lot of reports saying Al and Kiffin were at opposite ends and Al didn't want to fire Kiffin because of his contract (which would've required Al to pay 2 million to fire him). Kiffin was then seen at the senior bowl wearing no Raiders gear whatsoever, and completely avoided the press. Kiffin addressed the media for the first time last week when he said they should go defense with the pick or trade down), who had not spoken out load since the end of the last game of the 2007 season.
It's all odd, confusing and mad, but it's the Raiders. The new report which is very interesting concerning Dominic Rhodes comments on the Al Davis/Kiffin saga can be seen here:

http://oak.scout.com/2/751868.html

Basically, it sums up my blog for today. Go ahead and fool yourself saying "He was just mad cause he got released or wasn't used a lot". Well, for a player who actually has no grudge against the Raiders, I find it hard to believe he would lie about this. Al is in full control and most likely won't let Kiffin have some if any say in adding/drafting players until Kiffin's record shows up on the positive side in the 2008 Raiders win/loss column.

Let's just hope Al's track stars and overpaid players can make this team look on the upside of respectable for the first time in a long while. We know Al Davis would find a way to make the room and get a deal done, but would he want to go through another big rookie contract like he did with Russell last year?
<img src="http://i.usatoday.net/sports/_photos/2007/04/25/aldavisx.jpg"align="right"WEIGHT=350HEIGHT=400>Highly Unlikely there would be another hold out like last year, but with all the cash Al has spent over the off-season and being in a situation where he doesn't have many draft picks, he may trade down. A guy like Darren McFadden falling into his laps with the fourth pick will be a tough decision. With Miami, St. Louis and Atlanta all shored up at running back, the odds are that McFadden will be there at #4. There are some rumors that Jerry Jones is very interested in him, and may even trade his smash mouth all pro running back in Marion Barber to sweeten a deal. Al and Jerry are close friends, and it wouldn't be surprising to see Al and Jerry help each other out on this one. Jerry gets his dream of McFadden playing for America's team and high powered offense, and Al gets to draft some more good talent. If a trade with Dallas were to go down, Raiders would receive the Boys' two first round picks and could get two first round talents at a lower price than taking someone at #4 and dishing out $20+ million guaranteed.
<img src="http://nothingbutballs.files.wordpress.com/2007/09/darren-mcfadden.jpg"align="left"WEIGHT=350HEIGHT=400>

Al could draft a good Defensive Lineman like Phillip Merling with one of those picks, and take one of the best receivers in the draft with the other pick. Or he could be wise about it and add two good talents to both of the lines because the hope of Kwame Harris to be a more effective left tackle than Barry Sims sounds like the hope of oil barrels to go back to fifty dollars each...which means it pretty much won't happen. Granted Tom Cable has done a great job in his first year here with the silver & black, but Harris is a very poor pass blocker, and an above average run blocker. That doesn't go too well when you have $60+ million tied up into your young franchise quarterback. Especially since Harris is supposed to protect Russell's blindside. The zone blocking system that Cable runs could bring out the best in Harris. He has been in a few different schemes, so he really hasn't settled in yet. Given the fact that someone like Gallery could start somewhere on the Raiders line, there is some hope of Cable turning Harris into a starter. The front office may have given him a fat contract, but he Harris doesn't get paid unless he performs because of his back-loaded contract. So he's a wild card, and Al's plan for him to play left tackle may mean no good prospect from the draft will compete with him.

It all depends if Al takes McFadden, or to trade down/take the best Offensive/Defensive Lineman available. (I wouldn't rule out Jake Long, as he has visited with Al but he is more suited to play right tackle in the pros). Taking McFadden would add more firepower to Kiffin's offense, but again does he really need another running back?

Some would argue (myself included) that the idea of taking a running back with a committee of Justin Fargas, Michael Bush, and Dominic Rhodes would be unwise. McFadden has very good skills running the football, is an offensive play-maker and has run a 4.2 and 4.3 respectively. Which will get Al's mouth to water and get his ticker going. He did just re-sign Fargas, re-structered Rhodes who played well in his playing time, and has a wild card in Michael Bush (I would mention LaMont Jordan but with that ridiculous salary he won't be a Raider much longer). <img src="http://media.rivals.com/IMAGES/Player/video/GLENNDORSEY250_7-24.JPG"align="right"WEIGHT=400HEIGHT=400>Al has a big decision to make...pay another fat contract like he's been doing, or get some more picks and have a variety of choices instead of just one on the first day and then just three after that (none in the second or third rounds). It may not be McFadden Al picks at #4 if he doesn't trade the pick, because if Glenn Dorsey fell to them that could be worth it. Dorsey makes an impact on a whole defense, and has showed great leadership (which is something the Raiders need on both sides of the ball) and toughness when playing through injury. Or Sedrick Ellis could be the pick. Kiffin's staff got a good look at him while coaching him up in the senior bowl, so I wouldn't rule him out. It seems that if Dorsey or Ellis were drafted by Al though, they would slide over one to play in the "4" technique since Tommy Kelly will be playing in the "3". That's another factor to think about for Al, along with Vernon Gholston, who will most likely be there at #4 too. Al has never traded down before, but he also has never spent this much money before,
He wants to win now, so that might mean taking a guy like McFadden would make sense. It would make more sense to trade down or to pick someone who could help in the trenches, but we'll never know what's going on behind Raiders closed doors except when the "undisclosed source" starts telling us what's going on (roll eyes). We'll just have to take a seat, and watch Al's plan for domination unravel over the course of the year(s).yayarea_raiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09827879310125857988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2717081687944171510.post-53833651786520921822008-03-03T17:32:00.000-08:002008-03-03T20:09:01.936-08:00Raiders Draft Scenarios/1st Raiders Mock DraftThe Raiders are not on the clock like they were last year at this time, but they need to have a good draft to get all of their needs. They will look to find a starting LT, add depth/a starter at DT, and get some wide receivers.

Raiders interviewed two prospects at the combine that I know of: Darren McFadden and Dexter Jackson. Does it mean anything? Well they both had good 40 times, so you have to factor that in given Al Davis's heart on for fast athletes.

So who do the Raiders pick at #4? Do they trade the pick? Who would be worth the #4 selection? Well, there are a few scenarios:

They could pick Sedrick Ellis. A guy with a strong motor, would help the weak defensive line, and can help the defense with the run and get pressure. Is he worth the #4 pick? That can be argued because he wasn't even in the top 10 before his impressive senior bowl play. What about Glenn Dorsey? Well, his injuries speak for itself. Is he better than Ellis? When healthy, yes. Dorsey is the best defensive player in this draft. The Raiders will definately get some looks at him and would be wise to look into his injuries and get some opinions from some doctors.

However, the Raiders need a starting left tackle with Barry Sims being released. Yeah, they could wait til the second round and hope USC's Sam Baker falls, but is that a likely thing with teams needing the best OL available? No. What about Jake Long and Ryan Clady? Would they be worth the #4 pick? Long no, Clady yes.

<img src="http://media.scout.com/Media/Image/44/447184.jpg"align="left"WEIGHT=200HEIGHT=200>Clady would be the best pick for the Raiders, because of his experience in the ZBS. A lot of scouts say Jake Long will not fare too well at left tackle, more of a right tackle. So, Clady would fit right in with the Raiders offensive scheme. Long could be another Robert Gallery if a team places him at left tackle. He can't move as well as Clady can, and he hasn't been in the ZBS before.

But the whole thing about taking a tackle in the top 5 may cause Al Davis to panic, because we all know what happened with Robert Gallery who was supposed to be the cornerstone left tackle...we all know how that panned out. Would the Raiders be making a mistake by taking their LT again by selecting Long or Clady? Long yes, and Clady no.

Then there is the scenario that has been brought up numerous amounts of times because Jerry Jones is supposedly looking for a trading partner to land Darren McFadden. Well, with ATL signing Turner, and the Dolphins and Rams set at runningback, it only makes sense that McFadden will fall to the Raiders at #4. Will the Raiders take him? No. With Lane Kifin's offense and Tom Cable's ZBS there is no need to go and spend more money on a runningback when they just re-signed Justin Fargas. Al Davis is close friends with Jerry Jones, and a trade is highly possible. Jones would have to give up both his 1st rounders, and then some. That would help the Raiders, who currently only have 5 picks in the draft, and no 3rd round pick. They will look to get in a trade on draft day most likely to get back into the 3rd. Don't be surprised if Derrick Burgess is traded for a first day pick either.

If Jones does make a deal with Al, then the Raiders can get all three of their biggest needs in the 1st and second round, which is great. Limas Sweed or Desean Jackson would make the Raiders passing game great again. Both are deep threat wide <img src="http://www.bevosports.com/images/limas-sweed-injury.jpg"align="right"WEIGHT=250HEIGHT=300>outs, Jackson just has a little more value because of his punt returning skills. On his first punt return attempt in college, he took it to the house. He was the Nation's #1 player coming out of high school. He may be small, but the kid is well polished, has great work ethic, and can burn corner's with his long speed and open field abilites.
Limas Sweed would be ideal too, if the Raiders want that deep threat that they thought they had with Moss. Sweed has great size, good speed, and can make those big catches downfield. Who would be the best bet out of the two? It all depends on who the Raiders staff thinks would do well in their offense (Al Davis may just call them both over to Oakland for a race to make a decision).

So, here is my Raiders first Mock Draft, assuming the Raiders DON'T trade their pick:

#4 Ryan Clady-Will step in and start from day 1 at left tackle, and flourish well and continue to get better under Tom Cable.
#36 James Hardy-Both Limas Sweed and Desean Jackson will be gone by this pick. If the Raiders want either one, they will have to trade into the 1st round. Either way, they can't pass up on Hardy here. His size and red zone abilities make him worth it.
Round 3 Frank Okam-The Raiders will make a trade to get them back into the 3rd, so they can get Frank Okam to help their run defense. Can you really depend on Sands and Warren to get the job done? They were apart of a horrible run defense.
Round 4 Dexter Jackson-Because he had a great 40 time, and showed some good deep threat abilities at Appalachian State with 8 touchdowns, it's almost in the bag that Al will get Jackson here. Might be a stretch because he could possibnly be had in round 5.

My next blog will be my Raiders 2nd Mock Draft with all picks, and discuss what players the Raiders may go after with the extra ones they get if they trade their 1st round pick.yayarea_raiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09827879310125857988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2717081687944171510.post-74539327961854062712007-12-05T17:35:00.000-08:002007-12-05T18:28:45.230-08:00Russell Should Make His First Start Against ColtsSaying Jamarcus Russell is ready to play could get you into trouble around the Raider Nation, or it could also be seen as the right thing to do. Russell missed training camp. He missed pre-season as well. Does that automatically mean he's not ready and/or capable of making a start this year? Not neccessarly. With a stout running game ranked 5th in rushing, it might not be a bad idea to let Jamarcus get the keys soon with a nice full tank of Justin Fargas to run on.

<img src="C:\Documents and Settings\AJ\My Documents\My Pictures\J_Russell_071202_inside.jpg"align="left"WEIGHT=200HEIGHT=300>He has all the skills, including that massive arm that allows him to throw over eighty yards downfield easily...which usually takes a some effort from any other quarterback. Jamarcus makes it looks easy. That's not it all in football though because not every team these days throws deep downfield all the time. However, don't take that as to mean that's all he can do, because this guy shows poise, escapes pressure, and throws beautiful spirals.

Jamarcus came into play for two series in last sunday's win over the Broncos, and went 4/7 for 56 yards. He also managed to escape pressure by running for four yards. He had a bad snap from center Jeremy Newberry which ended in a fumble recovery of Jamarcus who just jumped on the ball. I think he is smart, and smart enough to manage a whole game come Decemeber 15th. Against the Colts, Kiffin should give the rookie a whole game plan and see how he does. Start Russell, and have Daunte Culpepper as the number two quarterback to relieve Jamarcus if they feel he can't finish the game or don't think he's doing too well in a starting role. Kiffin should ask him if he thinks he could start, and if Jamarcus thinks he can do it and Kiffin is ok with it, do it.

Prep Jamarcus everyday (which they are doing everyday), get him some of the first team snaps this week (split half and half with whoever starts vs. Packers) and all next week have him take 70% or more of the first team snaps.

It's not like it's going to hurt the kid when you have two experienced quarterbacks ready to take over if anything should happen in the game. If Kiffin see's Jamarcus struggling, pull him and send in either Culpepper or McCown. Lane Kiffin is prepping Russell to start whatever way you see it, whether it be this sunday, next sunday, or next year. If Jamarcus thinks he can go, and Kiffin is comfortable with it as well, it would be a good call to get the number one overall pick ready for 2008. They don't presently have as many plays suited for Jamarcus as they do for McCown or Culpepper in key situations. Kiffin has already run through some of those plays, and needs to continue to go through them all so he can decide whether it would be a good move to start the Russell era now (to get him some good experience heading into the 2008 off-season) or just rep him in with a set of plays like last sunday.

Here is Russell's debut in Oakland:

yayarea_raideryayarea_raiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09827879310125857988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2717081687944171510.post-89683601103968351282007-11-21T18:54:00.000-08:002007-11-21T19:06:47.012-08:00Kiffin Has A Security Blanket For 2008Coach Lane Kiffin is just buying another year from Al Davis, buy not letting the youth movement beging (such as JaMarcus Russell and Michael Bush). For example: when Kiffin was asked why Bush was not placed on the roster, he said the following:
"We just really didn’t have a spot for him right now. He practiced well and it was good to get a chance to be around him practicing and to get a feel for him," Kiffin said. "It kind of is a security blanket for you if some other things happen, some other injuries or one of the running backs especially but even someone else where a spot would open. But having to sign another lineman today, today being our last day to be able to make a move, we just didn’t have a spot for him."
Now, that being said, something is definately fishy in oakland (like there always is) and it could mean Kiffin is scared he might not get the time he wants as HC of the Oakland Raiders. It's not a bad argument is it? It could totally be why all of this nonsense is happening right now. <img src="http://msnbcmedia2.msn.com/j/msnbc/Components/Photos/070726/070726_kiffin_hmed_2p.hmedium.jpg"align="left"WEIGHT=100HEIGHT=100>By nonsense, I mean why Russell hasn't seen any playing time yet (can be argued whether or not he is ready, but c'mon now he should get in there), and why Bush hasn't been put on the roster, when Kiffin could have done it EASILY.
First of all, there IS ROOM FOR BUSH if Kiffin let a player be released...why he did not release a player remains curious and makes me furious...Chris Morris could be released, Grove is a back-up C but with the injury to Green, MCQ will probably play LG if Gallery moves back to RT, therefore Morris could be released. Josh McCown OR Walter could have been released too. IT MAKES NO SENSE to carry 4 Qb's...McCown ain't going to be here next yr unless Kiff wants to re-sign him as a back up (we all know that McCown is not a starter in this league, and may just stay here), and Walter wants to start some where. I see Walter as a Derek Anderson (more of a pocket passer and if he has good protection can be really solid), because he can be successful in this league, but since Russell is here and we have a bad O-line anyways, he will want to be traded or released. C Pep we all know will be gone, who can definately start somewhere, but will need a solid O-line and his contract is up after this yr. There is no reason why they couldn't have released a guy like Walter, cause he lately hasn't even been listed on the depth chart! OR OF COURSE CUT JORDAN! DUH! Rhodes actually dresses and gets some carries at least.
Kiffin is just buying one more year, he is scared that old powerful Al will give him the boot and try to hire someone else (maybe a high school coach). So, Kiffin wants to save Russell (for the most part) and Bush for next year. Bush IS HEALTHY, DON'T FOOL YOURSELVES. HE PRACTICED. HE COULD PLAY, BUT NO...

So Kiffin talked about how Bush will likely study other teams this yr, continue to work out, and compete next year for the starting QB job...

WHICH LEAVES US WITH SOME SCENARIOS:

1) Kiffin signs a back-up Rb, re-signs Fargas or drafts a Rb in the later rounds, and hopes that Bush will be the player he once was, and win the starting RB job.

2) Kiffin drafts a talented college starting runningback (like Darren McFadden), so if Bush pans out for him or not, he definately has McFadden. Well, let's say Bush is GREAT. Then looks to be an every-down back and all, and McFadden is GREAT TOO. That causes a controversy, and will also be a dumb move because that means Kiffin could have kept Bush and got some other GREAT talent like a DEEP THREAT WR, A RUN STUFFER DT, or maybe a GOOD O-LINEMAN (maybe, there is a chance and don't reply with Robert Gallery we actually have a system in place for the OL now).

3) Kiffin goes through FA and the draft thinking that Bush will be his starting RB for sure, but is mum about it. We here all this good stuff about Bush in OTA's and training camp, and then he look bad in pre-season, and it continues over for the rest of his career here (due to being out of the game too long maybe). Kiffin then is dumb for NOT PLAYING Bush this year and finding out if Bush still has "IT", like he did in college.

BOTTOM LINE IS, KIFFIN IS DOING THINGS THAT WILL MAKE HIM LOOK LIKE A COMPLETE JACKASS IN THE NEAR FUTURE, OR MAKE HIM LOOK LIKE A GENIUS AFTER ALL IF HIS PLAN GOES ACCORDINGLY. WE, THE NATION, UNFORTUNATELY ARE TRAPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF ALL THIS AND HAVE BEEN PATIENT BUT WOULD LIKE TO SEE SOMETHING NOW. LET'S JUST HOPE THAT WAITING A LITTLE BIT LONGER (TO SEE THE YOUTH; Bush, Russell, Henderson) WILL PAY OFF WELL...yayarea_raiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09827879310125857988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2717081687944171510.post-27317376846280434792007-10-14T20:26:00.000-07:002007-10-15T12:02:35.535-07:00What Do The Raiders Have To Do? Will The Raiders Get A Division Win?Offensively:
Lane Kiffin needs to rally his Raiders and tell them to put this game behind them. Culpepper must study the film and figure out what he did wrong so he won't lose his job. Josh McCown should be back soon, and if he has another game like he id, he might get pulled. Daunte must perform well against KC next week.
<img src="http://www.raiders.com/uploadedImages/Team/Players/Rhodes-action.jpg"align="right"WEIGHT=200HEIGHT=200>Dominic Rhodes needs to get more reps in with the first-team offense. I have a feeling this guy will become a big part of our offense. Kiffin and Knapp need to sit down and figure out some ways to get him to spell Jordan for positive yardage.
Jerry Porter, Ronald Curry, and Mike Williams need to step their game up. They were no where to be found for most of the game against the Chargers, which isn't good. They need to be more agressive, and get open and make plays. Porter especially needs to fully put his work in for those deep passes he has been getting.
Tom Cable must work hard with the O-Line this week and get them back in sync. it is very critical they don't flunk out like they did for the rest of the season. The O-Line needs to be pushed harder on pass blocking. It also wouldn't hurt to just go over the basics a few times early on in the week.
Defensively:
Rob Ryan has to do something. That performance by his defense was far less than stellar. He is relying on his LB's to make plays all too often. Maybe he can force Kiffin's hand on a possible trade to get a nice run stuffer but that is very very unlikely. Ryan will continue to work with what he has, which is a poor pass rushing and run stopping defensive line, and great pass coverage linebacker's. Along with some good CB's who can make some plays and some confused safeties.
I don't really know if Al Davis specifically tells Ryan not to Blitz, but it may be that way. Ryan needs to load the box, at least show blitz and have the D-Line get pressure on the QB to make bad throws into our good secondary. It wouldn't hurt to even have some plays designed for Huff to blitz, which could work extremely well on passing downs. Also, Ryan needs to address his interior linemen.
They MUST STOP THE RUN. Ryan has to figure out WHY his defense keeps failing to stop the run, which most of us all know that the D-line is unfortunately contributing to. Warren Sapp may have made a bad decision after all in losing that weight. He is often getting pushed around more and not making much tackles. Against the Chargers Sapp had an assist tackle, which aren't his kind of stats. he got pressure with some others on one play, which resulted in a defensive touchdown, but that's about it.
Terdell Sands was payed a nice amount of money to sure up that DT position beside Sapp and take down ball carriers. This year he has lost his starting spot to Gerard Warren, our best run stoppper, and looks very sloppy. He evn didn't get the start against the Chargers becuase Ryan moved Tommy Kelly over from end to start at DT. Sands was great last year as a spell man. Too bad he isn't panning out for Ryan because that's good $ wasted that could be going to Asomugha's or D-Burg's new contract at the end of the year...
<img src="http://www.raidersenespanol.com/uploads/photos/perm/main/OKDGNMPINHKJ/122105burgess180.jpg"align="left"WEIGHT=200HEIGHT=200>How about D-Burg? When he ISN'T GETTING DOUBLE-TEAMED he has barely missed making a play on the QB, but hasn't been much of use against the run.
I still think he is a force, but he needs to get better and get his fellow linemen on track. As for the rookie Jay Richardson, I think he's a good project. He could trun out to be a good player, but he too must get better. He was responsible for Howard's interception for a TD in Denver and helps against the run. He is a decent player but must continue to develop.
Morrisson & Howard, or should I say "The Law Offices Of Morrisson & Howard", are playing well, but not well enough. Against the Chargers they both were blocked sometimes even down-field. They have to be free to tackle the ball carrier if he makes it through the D-Line! Is Schweigart or Huff going to be able to tackle him? Sometimes they will, most of the time they won't, and don't count on Schweigart bringing down the ball carier on contact, for him it usually takes 5-6 yards for him to bring the RB down.

<img src="http://espndeportes-akamai.espn.go.com/2003/photos2007/0508/w_LaneKiffin_v.jpg"align="left"WEIGHT=250HEIGHT=250>Can Kiffin get the Raiders a much-needed Division win? Their last one was the 2004 snow game agianst the Donkies. The answer is Yes. With a good game plan, and good defensive play, the Raiders should be able to defend their home ground and get their first division win since 2004.

Bottom Line: Kiffin needs to have better play out of his Line and has to get momentum to build on as the game goes on. Get Rhodes 5-10 carries when he spells Jordan who should get 15+ carries a game. Daunte must play better and be smarter. Ryan must get his D-Line to get after the QB and make plays so the secondary can capitalize on bad throws.

GO RAIDERS AND LET'S BEAT THE CHIEFS AT HOME AND GET A MUCH NEEDED DIVISION WIN!!!yayarea_raiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09827879310125857988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2717081687944171510.post-50332570914072475462007-10-08T11:25:00.000-07:002007-10-08T16:37:04.575-07:00Possible Trades; Raiders Look To Take On Chargers<img src="http://images.sportsnetwork.com/nfl/getty/oakland/2006/walter_andrew.jpg"align="left"WEIGHT=200HEIGHT=200>As the trade deadline gets closer and closer, the Raiders have the lines off the hook and are probably in contact with teams. The Raiders currently have four Quarterback's, and since Josh McCown is close to healed, one QB will be gone via trade.
Andrew Walter, who has some experience as he started most of the Raiders games last year, will probably be traded if not McCown. It's all up to Lane Kiffin right now, who has to figure out one thing which will solve the QB sitaution: Who is the Starter? If Culpepper is now the starter, and him and McCown both having one-year deals, could McCown be the odd man out? McCown could provide depth at QB for another team, and is more attractive than Walter at the moment.<img src="http://www.raiders.com/uploadedImages/Team/Players/mccown-action.jpg"align="right"WEIGHT=200HEIGHT=200>
However, Walter, C-Pep, and McCown both are in their last year of their contract. So, one of them may get re-signed after the season, or the Raiders could look for another Vet after the season is over to mentor Russell.
It would be wise of Kiffin to try a package deal here, Fabian Washington, who appears to have been beaten out of his starting role opposite of Asomugha by Stanford Routt, could be traded as well. For example, Kiffin could put Walter/McCown in with Fabian Washington, and try and trade for the talented Deangelo Hall from the Atlanta Falcons, who would welcome a new Qb and CB. <img src="http://www.nflhs.com/images/PI/db3_DeAngeloHall2006-200.jpg"align="left"WEIGHT=150HEIGHT=500>Hall has been heard to not like the coach and wants out sooner rather than later, so why not try and get it done? Hall would be a great compliment to the team, but yeah, might not happen, but it just might happen. Walter has lots of talent, and might flourish in Petrino's offense. Either way McCown or Walter looks like a better option than Harrington or Leftwich.
Also, there are some rumors Warren Sapp might be on the block as well, but I doubt the Raiders trade one of the defensive leaders of the team just because he doesn't have a sack yet. I'm sure they will entertain offers if there are any though...
The other possible trade could be...Justin Fargas. Why not? The kid has 179 yards rushing against the fins, so teams are going to look at him as an option (like the Bucs). Why could fargas be traded? <img src="http://www.nfluk.com/imagefolder/medium/Feature%20Article/fargaswk8.jpg"align="right"WEIGHT=220HEIGHT=225>Because Michael Bush could be activated next week, and that makes Fargas trade bait since Jordan is the starter, Rhodes will spell him, and then you see Bush get a carry or two. Doesn't make sense if Kiffin keep them all, so look for a possible trade here.

Norv To Face Former Team
<img src="http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/chargers/images/070219norv_turner.jpg"align="right"WEIGHT=220HEIGHT=225> Norv, who failed with the Redskins and Raiders as Head Coach, now has possibly saved his job with the win over the Broncos. Now he faces our hungry Raiders who look to show the rest of the NFL they are contenders. This won't be just another game, this will be a HUGE game (worthy of being moved to Sunday Night). It should be somehwhat emotional too. Norv is going to want to beat the Raiders (or Al Davis rather) for showing him the door after two failed seasons at the helm. Lane Kiffin will have to shut down LT, who threw and ran for a touchdown last year in San Diego when the Raiders got screwed with the BS fumble call. Anyways, Kiffin needs Rob Ryan to help him out big in this one. Derrick Burgess is goin to have to have a big game and fire up the defense and get to the quarterback consistently.
The Raiders hope to have Jordan back, if not there will be a series of Dominic Rhodes and Justin Fargas, which might not be as productive if they don't have a punisher (Jordan). Culpepper will get his second start, and will try to make some plays against the Chargers defense who will probably blitz. Expect to see a lot of passes to Rhodes and/or Jordan, who should be a big part of this game. I think this will be the game where the Raiders tight ends finally get REALLY involved in. The game should be close, and who ever wins this game can call themselves the best of the AFC West, at least for now.yayarea_raiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09827879310125857988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2717081687944171510.post-22963497297878056492007-09-01T09:55:00.000-07:002007-09-01T09:57:43.227-07:00Walter to be Traded? Crockett to be Released? There are talks in league circles that Walter will be traded today and if not, will be released with the rest who didn't make it.
Russell (when he does indeed sign) will need to have a roster space waiting for him which will be vacant by Walter by the season start.
I expect a deal to get done because Walter has so much upside that can't be ignored and he could succeed if he bought into Bobby Petrino's system in Atlanta. That is certainly an option as to where he might go, along with the Jaguars, who will release or trade Byron Leftwich today as well.
In fact, Shannahan will probably try and make a play for Walter via trade or free agency just so he could try and get something out of him (who knows).

As for Crockett, Griffith was named the starting fullback last night and I wouldn't be surprised to see him traded. He is an above average fullback who is great for short yard gains and will draw a lot of interest if he hits the FA pool. But maybe O'neal get's cut instead, and Crockett remains.
The tea loves this guy and woud be deeply saddened and very angry if he was showed the door. Well Nation, hope for him to still be a Raider because he's a good player who could be used effectively when his number is called.
Not to mention, he is a fan favorite.yayarea_raiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09827879310125857988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2717081687944171510.post-29780160600354232212007-08-25T10:43:00.000-07:002007-08-25T11:01:41.600-07:00The Raiders Starters For 2007 Regular Season...QB) D. Culpepper will start, and should have an above average year. Josh McCown will probably get traded (to Atlanta)once Russell is signed, and Walter will stay until the season is over.

RB) L. Jordan will start, with Rhodes becoming the lightning to Jordan's thunder when his suspension is up. Expect Fargas & Echemandu to battle it out against Seattle to see who makes the team as the 3rd RB.

FB) Crockett/Griffith will both start, in different packages. O'neal will most likewly get cut unless he shows something next week in Seattle (doubtfoul).

WR) Porter & Curry are obviosuly the two starters, the #3 WR will be determined next week as M. Williams & T. Taylor will battle it out. J. Lee Higgins will now definately make the team after showing off his skills in last night's performance against the Rams, but he needs to still improve and be more consistant. Look for him to take majority of the punt return duties next week, and possibly during the 2007 season.

TE) It's a given, Z. Miller will start, with J. Madsen right behind him, who has played extremely well in pre-season.

LT) Sims LG) Gallery C)....Probably Grove, unless Newberry shows something next week RG) Carlisle RT) Green (who I believe still needs some work)

DE's) Kelly & D-Burg will start, with Moses coming in during situational pass rushing times, and Richardson coming in sometimes against the run when Kelly or D-Burg need breathers.

DT) Sapp & Sands will start, but i expect Warren to see some time to especially when we play teams like the Chiefs, Chargers & Broncos (for revenge). But it all depends on how well he is developing and whether or not he see's time against Seattle. He still might even be a long-shot to make the team (joining so late), but we'll see what happens.

MLB) Morrisson OLB's) Howard, Williams during pass situations and Thomas during run and goal line situations.

CB's) Asomugha & Fabs will start, with Routt or Carr to play Nickel back. Hiram Eugene might even make the team if he outplays Chris Johnson next week, especially if Startks doesn't play.

FS) Stu, maybe Huff (at times) SS) Huff, WHERE'S DARIUS???yayarea_raiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09827879310125857988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2717081687944171510.post-34837617362235367232007-08-11T13:27:00.000-07:002007-08-11T15:07:12.230-07:00*Players To Watch In Pre-Season*<IMG SRC="http://d.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/ap/20070801/capt.d264a1e93d7340bd950243ae334b3470.raiders_camp_football_cadv112.jpg"align="left"WEIGHT=200 HEIGHT=250>Josh McCown: Has impressed HC Lane Kiffin in training camp and has also gotten some kind words from OC Greg Knapp. Supposedly he has grasped this offense well and makes good decisions in the pocket. Also, there are a lot of reports saying that he is very mobile and can avoid the pass rush. Which is what Kiffin wants from all of his Qb's becuase you never know if the OL can get it done these days.

<img src="http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/j/apmegasports/200708011339491578291-pf.widec.jpg"align="right"WEIGHT=110HEIGHT=110> Daunte Culpepper: He should see some significant playing time, but the question is with what wide receivers? Kiffins said Daunte will be the third QB in for saturday's game against Arizona, and will look to show some signs of his claim to be the starter come week 1. This is also a good opportunity for the receiver's around him because Daunte is smart, and is coming along with the offense but still has a lot more learning before Kiffin sticks him in during pre-season as his no.1 Qb. My guess is Walter will start the next game, then Daunte himself.

Mike Williams: Starts to look a little like his old-self some say, but reports have said that he is still not even at Kiffin's preferred weight 235 lbs. Tonight Williams should see a lot of play time and a good chance to show that he has come to work and can get it done, which is what he supposedly couldn't do in Detroit. Look for Williams to get some passes in the red zone area as Kiffin will look to see if he can still be the scary red-zone freak he once coached.

"Joe" Echemandu: He as impressed his coaches in training camp and is referred to as one of the training camp stars. He will see a lot of time tonight as Rhodes should not be in for too long, even though he will be suspended the first four games. Joe will look to continue the good impression he has made on his coaches in camp to the Raider Nation as well. Kiffin will need someone to give reps to while Rhodes is suspended. Even if Jordan is the starter, Kiffin will need a change of pace back, or maybe even a repacement if Jordan doesn't show up.

<img src="http://images.sportsnetwork.com/football/nfl/allsport/raiders/gallery_robert5.jpg"align="right"WEIGHT=110HEIGHT=110><Robert Gallery: He may not see much time in the pre-season, but watch him closely. The former no.2 pick in the 2004 NFL Draft has been moved from tackle to left guard, where he looks to show significant improvement (hopefully).

Mario Henderson: The guy who will replace Barry Sims next year should have a close watch and see a lot of time in pre-season. This guy is slowly grasping the OL scheme and Cable has had some nice words to say about the rookie. But nonetheless, he is a rookie and will probably not look great, but will shows some signs of why the Raiders spent a third round pick on him in April.

Jeremy Newberry & Jake Grove: Both will see some time, both will look to impress. This is the biggest battle on the OL. Newberry is the front-runner for the C position, with Grove close behind. Grove will see more time due to Newberry's chances of getting injured, so he should capitulize on his reps.

<img src="http://www.raiders.com/uploadedImages/Team/Players/moses-action.jpg"align="left"WEIGHT=150HEIGHT=150>Kevin Huntley & Quentin Moses: Both are fighting to start opposite of the best DE in the league Derrick Burgess. Both have skills, and both of them will see time in pre-season to show why they deserve to start for one of the best defenses in the NFL.

Zach Crockett & Oren O'neal: Considering that Justin Griffith will probably make the team and might even start, whoever shows up here, will look to challenge Griffith for reps later.

Johnnie Morant, Doug Gabriel, Alvis Whitted & Johnnie Lee Higgins: All of these guys bring something to the table. Now, probably only two of them (or one, who knows how many WR's Kiffin keeps) will make the final roster. This will be an intense battle. Morant has great size & potential, Gabriel always seems to impress in pre-season, and Higgins will look to make his mark on special teams and some reps at WR. Whitted is Whitted, old, not really useful, and there are better WR's on the team so he will have to show SOMETHING to stick around.

Kyle Shotwell: He has the opportunity to make the team as a third string or maybe second string LB with recently acquired special teams stand-out Kacyvenski going on the IR. I'm pulling for this kid because he has had a great career in college, was not drafted, and can be a good playmaker. Watch for him as he should see a lot of time while Rob Ryan rests the core of his linebacker's for the regular season.

B.J. Ward & Eric Frampton: One of these guys will be on the final roster, but who? Well, Ward has had an extremely well camp getting interceptions, while the rookie Frampton has supposedly struggled. This will be Frampton's chance to stand out and make plays on special teams. Ward should do well, but this is a game, not training camp, so let's watch and see what happens with these guys.

<IMG SRC="http://www.raiders.com/uploadedImages/Team/Players/Routt_action1.jpg"align="right"WEIGHT=200 HEIGHT=250>< Duane Starx, Stanford Routt (when he's back), Marquice Cole & Chris carr: Rob Ryan is looking for his nickel-back CB, now he should find out with all of these CB's that are going to see time because Asomugha and Washington WILL rest to be fresh for the season. whoever stands out here, will make the team, other CB's will have a chance as well.yayarea_raiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09827879310125857988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2717081687944171510.post-81118100651529337102007-08-10T12:20:00.000-07:002007-08-10T12:26:48.046-07:00RUSSELL UPDATE<img src="http://images.nfl.com/photos/img10155405.jpg"align="left"WEIGHT=200HEIGHT=100>NFL Network just came on to say that JaMarcus Russell, The Number One overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft is in Oakland Hills and could be there to sign his contract, relatively soon. Which makes a lot of sense because of all of the recent rumors that Russell would be switching agents, which makes his current ones want to get the ball rolling now. I would say don't get too excited, but that a deal is on the horizon.yayarea_raiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09827879310125857988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2717081687944171510.post-51367956679658040052007-08-07T10:36:00.000-07:002007-08-07T11:31:03.131-07:00Projected 53 Man Depth Chart:
QB: 1-McCown 2-Culpepper 3-Russell (Walter I now believe will be cut)

<img src="http://www.sfgate.com/blogs/images/sfgate/raiders/2006/11/09/raiders02_091_pc250x190.JPG"align="left"WEIGHT=100HEIGHT=100 title="Can Jordan Keep his Starting Position?"align="right">RB: 1-Jordan (for now) 2-Rhodes 3-Echemandu 4-Bush

FB: 1-Griffith 2-Oneal (i still hope Crockett makes the team and that I'm wrong)

WR: 1-Porter 2-Curry 3-Williams 4-Gabriel 5-Higgins

TE: 1-Miller 2-Madsen 3-Stewart

LT: 1-Sims 2-Henderson 3-Slaughter

LG: 1-Gallery 2-McQuistan<img src="http://www.raiders.com/uploadedImages/Team/Players/miller-action.jpg"align="right"WEIGHT=250 HEIGHT=250>

C: 1-Newberry 2-Grove 3-Morris

RG: 1-Carlisle 2-Boothe

RT: 1-Green 2-Henderson 3-Slaughter

LDE: 1-Burgess 2-Richardson

DT: 1-Sapp 2-Sands 3-Brayton 4-Hawthorne

RDE: 1-Huntley 2-Moses (either could start, might split reps)

MLB: 1-Morrisson

OLB: 1-Howard 2-Thomas 3-Williams 4-Shotwell<img src="http://www.raiders.com/uploadedImages/Team/Players/Huff_action1.jpg"align="left"WEIGHT=200HEIGHT=300>

CB: 1-Asomugha 2-Washington 3-Carr 4-Routt 5-Cole?

FS: 1/2-Huff/Schweigart 3-Frampton

SS: 1-Darius 2-Ward

K-Sebas P-Lechler

Questionable Players To Make Team: WR Travis Taylor, WR Doug Gabriel, WR Johnnie Lee Higgins, TE Tony Stewart, T ALbert Toeaina, CB Stanord Routt, CB John Bowie, CB Marquice Cole, FB Zach Crockett, and WR's Johnnie Morant & Will Buchanon (who will probably get out on the practice squad).
yayarea_raiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09827879310125857988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2717081687944171510.post-54756251851867427982007-08-02T20:45:00.000-07:002007-08-02T20:59:08.701-07:00Regardless Of Who Starts, JaMarcus WILL PLAY...soonEven though there is so much competition for the starting QB position, J-Rock will definately get to strat some time this year. Why you ask? Well for one thing, does anybody really think Culpepper, McCown, or even Walter can take us to the promise
land this year? <img src="http://msn.foxsports.com/id/7082188_36_2.jpg"align="left"WEIGHT=200HEIGHT=200>
Maybe some people, but that is very unrealistic. However I do like McCown, and I am pulling for Culpepper to say who he says he is. But I don't think either of them will start the whole season whever is named the starter week 1. The question isn't who will be named the starter, the question is who will turn the ball over to JaMarcus?

Russell should be signed within the next 3 weeks, he'll look to get some licks in before training camp is over (hopefully) and will want to see some pre-season playing time (but it's not up to him, it's up to his agents). J-Rock will of course be starting next year, but with all of the money he'll be making, Al & Kiffin will be pressured to put him in when the starter flops. Let's just all hope this deal for JaMarcus get's done soon though, because he's already watched his oportunity to start slip from his hands...yayarea_raiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09827879310125857988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2717081687944171510.post-50092677252133418162007-07-31T12:10:00.000-07:002007-07-31T12:36:37.156-07:00Camp Capsules: QBJosh McCown vs. Andrew Walter vs. JaMarcus Russell (when he gets here) vs. Daunte Culpepper?

With all the reports of Culpepper to sign, I believe it. It will bring even more competition, which Coach Kiffin was hoping would happen since Russell was supposed to be in camp already. The team is expecting a lengthy hold-out, so Kiffin had Culpepper worked out in Florida, liked what he saw, and now will have him a work out today with the team. Now, McCown has been everything Coach Kiffin & Knapp have expected, Walter has gotten better and is supposedly impressing in camp, while Russell is in Alabama knowing that Culpepper will have a 75 percent chance of making the team (for now at least) today.

But there is one question everyone should be wondering: When all of these Qb's listed above are indeed in uniform and practicing, who has the best chance to win? Hmmm...Well, if Russell doesn't get in to Napa soon, it could be Culpepper vs. McCown (if Daunte signs, very likely at the moment). If Daunte doesn't sign, then it will be Walter vs. McCown, which is currently in progress. Right now, if Kiffin were to name his starter today it would probably be McCown. McCown has the mobility to scramble and stand strong in the pocket, Walter is getting better at scrambling as well, Culpepper is (or was) an expert at it, and Russell is good at it as well. This should be a very heated battle all around, but until Russell gets into camp, it looks like the job of starting is slipping from his grasp every minute his agent can't work out his deal.yayarea_raiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09827879310125857988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2717081687944171510.post-66762883939867304952007-07-17T08:19:00.000-07:002007-07-17T18:28:31.521-07:00Top Running Backs Fantasy 2007<img src="http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/ABPub/2006/12/14/2003478480.jpg"align="left"WEIGHT=250HEIGHT=250> 1) Frank Gore-best runningback in the NFC. He will continue to impress this year (last year i predicted that he would run for over 1300 yards with over 7 TD's...and I was right, and now very proud) and probably run for at least 1300 yards and be at the top of the NFC in rushing. He is my favorite runningback in the NFL as of right now.

2) LaDainian Tomlinson-best runningback in the AFC. He could end up beating out Gore in yards and take #1, but I believe Gore will take it this year. Anyways, LT should have another great year, supposedly Turner wants to give him MORE carries, so that could be dangerous. Look for him to probably finish at the top right behind/above Gore this year. Anywhere between 1200-1700 yards, but who knows, maybe he'll slip in his kitchen and be lost for the year...(fingers crossed)

3) Willie Parker-the guy who you can always count on. I had this guy on my fantasy team last year and he was a beast. I recommend everyone to take a second look at fast Willie between rounds 1-3 (if he isn't already gone). This guy is a solid fantasy player who uusually doesn't dissapoint. I predict he'll run for 1300+ yards and 8+ TD's.

<img src="http://web1.denverbroncos.com/resources/custom/Images/Top%20Stories/2007/henry_travis_070517.jpg"align="right"WEIGHT=250HEIGHT=250> 4) Travis Henry-this guy was great last year. Running for over 1200 yards in just 13 starts and 7 TD's to go with it. This guy is a solid fantasy option and will reak havic on defenses this year with his style of running, and his new offensive line which has mastered the ZBS (zone blocking system). With a good line, this guy could run for over 1300 yards and 6+ TD's if Shanahan gives him the most reps.

5) Willis McGahee-he's moved from Buffalo, and it was a good move. He now has an experienced QB in air-McNair, and now has a great offensive line to run behind. Two MAJOR differences from Buffalo to Baltimore. If McGahee can stay healthy, I'd say a good 1200+ yard season followed by 9+ TD's. He could even do more, considering how much Coach Billick likes to run. Plus he really likes scoring touchdowns, which helps. If healthy, watch out for McGahee this year folks.

HONORABLE MENTIONS (MAKE TOP TEN)
(In Order best of the five)
Steven Jackson-could be switched with #4 or #5
Thomas Jones-could be switched with #4 or #5
Cedric Benson
Joseph Addai
Larry Johnson (if he gets contract and don't run out of gas)

SLEEPERS: *MARSHAWN LYNCH* (my favorite to win rookie of the year) & DeAngelo Williamsyayarea_raiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09827879310125857988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2717081687944171510.post-4207811408195457892007-07-15T11:26:00.000-07:002007-07-15T12:25:18.487-07:00Top 5 Fantasy Quarterback's1) Tom Brady-As much as I dislike him, with all of the weapons he has it will be hard for him not to succeed. He always puts up good numbers usually, but this year expect him to be in the top 3 QB list at the end of the season, and will make another pro bowl.

2) Drew Brees-Could be the #1 QB, but either way he will finish some where in the top 5 QB list at the end of the season. He and the Saints will look to make it to the Super Bowl this year after getting stitched out of it in 2006 by a great defense in the Chicago Bears. Now, Brees has a good, solid tight end in Eric Johnson, who should also be a threat this year as well. Look for Brees to match up his numbers from last year, or exceed them.

3) Peyton Manning-Of course he will still be a top fantasy player, but I still don't expect his team to make the Superbowl this year. Harrisson & Wayne still will be one of the top receiving duo's catching balls from the pro-bowler. He might not even be in the top 3 this year, but he will still be in the top 5. Look for him to make a nice rookie impact on Anthony Gonzalez too.

4) Byron Leftwich-I know this might be a shocker to some, but the guy fears of not even being in the Jaguars plans in 2008, so look for him to put up some impressive numbers this year. I like him to get all of his wide receiver's involved this year. I like Wilford & Jones to put up good numbers as his targets too. Look for a surprising performance from Leftwich this year, who I think has a chance to take the Jag's to Arizona this year...

5) Eli Manning-This is THE YEAR for Eli Manning to show why the Giants gave up so much for this youngster. He will come into his own this year, finally being the team leader. He will take that offense into his own, and put up the numbers everyone's been expecting from him this year. I like him to Plaxico all day long. It will be a lethal weapon once again this year. Also, look for Sinorice Moss to FINALLY get put into the offense scheme, and Shockey to have his best season yet.

HONAROBLE MENTIONS WHO MIGHT MAKE THE TOP TEN:
Carson Palmer
Chad Pennington
Ben Roethlisbeger
Philip Rivers
Matt Leinart
Jay Cutler
Donovan McNabb??? For instance, Darius was known as a team leader in Jacksonville, and is a great player when healthy. Kiffin adding him to the team makes the secondary and the defense so much better. Why? VETERAN PRESENCE. Ryan doesn't really have a true safety with a lot of experience, and now he does. This will make the safety core so much better with someone with a lot of knowledge coming in...to start.

Previously, Huff & Stu were going to be the starting safeties for 2007 & possibly beyond. But from all of the signing's of safeties including rookie Eric Frampton (not to mention Darnell Bing moving from linebacker back to safety), and now Donovan Darius, Stu could be out of the starting line-up. He will still come in on some different packages and such (not COMPLETELY gone) but will not start at free safety with former 2006 first rounder Michael Huff waiting to take his true position once <img src="http://www.sfgate.com/blogs/images/sfgate/raiders/2006/08/24/raiders21_003_LM350x230.JPG"align="left"WEIGHT=250HEIGHT=250>again. Although Stu is a decent player and a fan favorite, he doesn't have the "ball hawk" talent he used to and will be pushed from the the starting core. Stu will still see time and won't get cut. However, more than likely he will play special teams, and come in for the defense at times. I do respect Stu and wish him the best of luck in training camp, but i think due to his lack of missed tackles and plays over the past couple of years shows that he will no longer start for the Raiders. Especially with new-comer Donovan Darius, who will push everyone of the safeties to their best abilities to beat him out in training camp.

The Darius signing is not bad at all for the Raiders, it is great. Ryan will have a knowledgeable strong safety (who knows what he is doing-not meaning Huff)who will have an immediate impact. I expect nothing more than for Darius to start strong safety next to Huff, who will be the free safey. This is also good for Bing & Frampton, who look to have a lot of potential and what a great guy to learn from.yayarea_raiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09827879310125857988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2717081687944171510.post-22488755512712327642007-06-05T11:09:00.000-07:002007-06-05T18:15:59.082-07:00Can Kiffin Make His Offense Click?<img src="http://media.scout.com/Media/Image/42/428486.jpg"align="right"WEIGHT=200HEIGHT=100> Lane kiffin takes over for the silver & black, to help this team get back to it's winning ways once again. In order for him to do that, that offensive line must come together. Last year they gave up 72 sacks, which ain't no picnic for the QB. Bringing in veterans Jeremy Newberry and Cooper Carlisle will really help out this offensive line which includes a shaken up Robert Gallery (T), Barry Sims (T), Jake Grove (C), Paul McQuistan (G) and the beast Kevin Boothe (G).

All of these linemen have a lot of potential, and with new offensive line coach Tom Cable to teach them the ZBS, they should do well. <img src="http://images.usatoday.com/sports/_photos/2005/09/08/inside2-2005-08-26-gallery.jpg"align="left"WEIGHT=200HEIGHT=200>But one thing is for sure, this is Robert Gallery's year to prove himself or show the Raider Nation that he is coming into his own like he once did at Iowa. Also, this will be Barry Sims's last year as a Raider because there will be no plans to re-sign him after the season with 3rd round pick Mario Henderson (T) waiting to take his spot sooner or later. What is interesting, is that Jake Grove appears to be beating out Jeremy Newberry at center, although there is still a long way to go until pre-season.

With the additions of new Offensive Coordinator Greg Knapp along with a whole new offensive staff, the Raider Nation should be excited for new and GOOD things to come, in time. The defense is showing the offense up in practice and "gets the bigger, nicer, more comfortable meeting room," says safety Stuart Schweigert. But the offense is like a freshmen in high school, willing to learn (for the most part) and is ready to go to work. They are in for a big wave of learning before anyone see's some sparks flying out of Kiffin's offense.

<img src="http://msnbcmedia4.msn.com/j/msnbc/Components/Photos/070509/070509_russell_vmed_4p.widec.jpg"align="left"WEIGHT=100HEIGHT=120> Jamarcus Russell, 1st overall pick in the 2007 draft by the Raiders, may see some starting time this year. From what comes out of camp everyone is impressed with free agent aquisition QB Josh McCown, who looks to be the Raiders starter against the Lions (his former team) come September 9th. However, the last free agent quarterback's that the Raiders have reeled in (Kerry Collins, Aaron Brooks) have been unsuccessful and have not performed up to part. Although that's all in the past, there is a very good chance Josh McCown starts looking like another Kerry Collins. Don't be surprised to see JaMarcus Russell be handed over the reins sometime during the season. I'll say week 7 against the Chiefs at home, J-Rock could be running out of the tunnel the starter of the Oakland Raiders.

Dominic Rhodes and Travis Taylor join this rebuilding team to bring the best of their ability to Kiffin's offense. The starting WR (most likely) core consists of Jerry Porter, Ronald Curry, Travis Taylor, Mike Williams (if he can shake his injury and PLAY) and possibly Doug Gabriel. There is a lot of talent at the position, yet it is still a battle unsettled and I could be totally wrong in the long run. We could also see some glimpses here and there of Johnnie Morant and Johnnie Lee Higgins (mostly on special teams) if they both in fact make the roster. So, all of the bits & peices Lane Kiffin has added to this offense should click, and click well. <img src="http://images.nfl.com/photos/img5981419.jpg"align="right"WEIGHT=150HEIGHT=150>Look for Jerry Porter to finally eclipse the 1,000 yard mark with Ronald Curry close behind. It's still a question mark in the backfield with Lamont Jordan, Dominic Rhodes, Justin Fargas and Michael Bush. Hopefully Rhodes can give Jordan some breathing time and come in off the bench fresh, and Fargas/Bush may get some reps as well. If all goes well, I would say with the defense keeping the silver & black in games and the offense being mediocre, the Raiders could go anywhere from 5-8 wins this year.

MY PREDICTIONS:
-Porter has 1,000 yards receiving
-D-Burg has another pro bowl year
-Bush see's a lot of reps towards the end of the season and looks GOOD
-Russell takes over the offense in week 7 against the Chiefs at home
-Defense is no.1 against the pass again
-Asomuguha & Washington become one of the leagues deadliest CB duo's to throw against
-Huff starts at Free Safety and gets 3+ Interceptions this yearyayarea_raiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09827879310125857988noreply@blogger.com
