Footrot Flats, showcasing elements and
antics of our rural community, still graces some of our newspapers
today. And, we still don’t know the dog’s name…

P is for Pinetree – Colin ‘Pinetree’ Meads – a
colossal of a man, epitomises what New Zealand rugby stands for:
passion, grit and darn hard yacker. The stamp shows Colin Meads in King
Country colours, the union he played for at representative level for
many years.

S is for Southern Cross – another New Zealand icon
in its own right, yet the stamp takes this a step further by showing
how it is possible to identify due south by looking at the star
constellation.

V is for Vote – is a timely reminder about election
year with the big red tick of the ballot paper. Subtely, the stamp also
pays homage to one of our greatest campaigners, Kate Sheppherd, the
figurehead of the suffragette movement in New Zealand; remember we were
the first to give women the vote in 1893.

W is for Weta – and if you look closely it’s not a
real weta on the stamp! W is for Weta celebrates not only one of our
indigenous and adorable (it’s not all about looks) insects but also the
hugely successful Weta Workshops that created many of the special
effects for Peter Jackson’s famous Lord of the Rings trilogy, as well
as the weta on this stamp.

Z is for Zeeland – lastly the Zeeland stamp
fittingly finishes the series. Note the spelling of Zeeland with two
e’s. New Zealand was discovered by Able Tasman (a Dutchman) who named
the country after the island Zeeland off the coast of the Netherlands.

A little bit set of stamps featuring the Islands' biodiversity, titled Darwin Initiative.

This issue is a collaboration between the Postal Service and the
Department of Environment and it introduces some of Cayman's indigenous
creatures. The Darwin Initiative is funded and administered by the
United Kingdom Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. It
provides small financial grants to promote the conservation of
biodiversity and the sustainable use of resources around the world.

There are five stamps in this issue: 20¢ (Land Crab); 25¢ (Needle
Case); 75¢ (Little Cayman Green Anole); 80¢ (Brac Ground Boa), and $1
(White-shouldered Bat). The Soldier Crab will be on the first day cover
and the Caribbean Reef Squid is featured on the souvenir sheet.

"We believe that this stamp issue is educational because it highlights
some of our endemic species and their essential habitats. It also
features some common species, those which we might take for granted,
but which nonetheless do their bit to make the Cayman Islands a little
bit different," noted Postmaster General Sheena Glasgow.

A distinguishing feature of this stamp issue is the inclusion of
habitats. While they are not on the stamps themselves, they comprise an
important part of the issue since habitats are essential for the
species to survive. The habitats are on the stamp selvage and an
explanation of where each creature can be found is included on the
leaflet. Another unique aspect of these stamps is that all images were
supplied by local photographers Nimer Alvarado, Andrew Hope, Jennifer
Godfrey, Fred Burton and Courtney Platt.

"Our department is extremely pleased to have been able to showcase in
this way, the spectacular diversity of animals found in the Cayman
Islands," said Department of Environment Director Gina Ebanks-Petrie.
"We extend sincere thanks to the Cayman Islands Post Office and the
Philatelic Bureau for providing this wonderful opportunity."

Minister of Communications, Works and Infrastructure, the Hon. Arden
McLean, JP, also endorsed the stamp issue. "The Government supports
this stamp issue which helps to raise awareness on the preservation of
our natural resources and educates the populace on the importance of
the Cayman Islands' environment," he said.

For more information, please contact Philatelic Manager Karen McField 946-4767.

Thank's For visiting My Blog

Thank's For visiting My Blog
Stamp Collectorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13853286684706798995noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2717075843474620030.post-60476117112942337522008-07-19T11:02:00.001+07:002008-07-19T11:02:38.711+07:00ARTISTS (Puccini, Fattori, Guareschi, Daumier)

The set is made up of four values of € 0,60 - € 1,00 - € 1,40 and € 1,70 and celebrates the following artists: the 150th anniversary of the birth of the composer Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) and the centenary of the death of the artist Giovanni Fattori (1825-1908), the centenary of the birth of the author Giovannino Guareschi (1908-1968) and the bicentenary of the birth of the French artist Honoré Daumier (1808-1879). The stamps feature Marie Dressler, Raymond Burr, Norma Shearer, and Chief Dan George.
The set of four stamps entitled The Sequel were designed by John Belisle and Kosta Tsetsekas of Vancouver's Signals Design and use images created by Neal Armstrong. The background of each stamp is evocative of each star's career: Dressler's shows a scene inspired by a photograph taken from a clip of Tugboat Annie, Burr's has the Perry Mason courtroom; Shearer's features an art deco portrait by George Hurrell that recalls many of her films, and Chief Dan George's depicts a scene from Little Big Man. Belisle, Tsetsekas and Armstrong also produced the first set of Canadians in Hollywood stamps featuring John Candy, Fay Wray, Lorne Greene and Mary Pickford.

Marie Dressler (1868-1934) was the first female star of film comedy and obtained her first starring role in 1914 in Tillie's Punctured Romance, the first feature-length comedy every made. She went on to star in more than 40 films including Min and Bill, Anna Christie, Dinner at Eight and Tugboat Annie.

Raymond Burr (1917-1993) is perhaps best known for his roles as lawyer Perrry Mason and wheelchair-bound chief of detectives Robert Ironside in the TV series Ironside. Burr also appeared in some 140 films including Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Rear Window.

Norma Shearer's (1900-1983) hard beginnings changed when she landed a role in the 1920 movie The Stealers. She was eventually signed by M-G-M, which cast her in The Actress and The Trial of Mary Dugan. Shearer avoided typecasting by playing a variety of roles, including Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Juliet, and a career woman in The Divorcee, which earned Shearer an Academy Award™.

Chief Dan George (1899-1981) found fame at 65; an unusual Hollywood story. In the early 1960s when the actor playing Ol' Antoine in the CBC series Cariboo Country fell ill, George's eldest son suggested they use a real aboriginal in the role and introduced his father. George immediately brought the character to life and became a driving force behind the series' success. He subsequently played in Little Big Man, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Harry and Tonto and Americathon, to name a few.

In order to connect the audience to the stamps, illustrations by Adam Rogers were used to craft the Souvenir Sheet and Official First day cover. Adam created a vintage feel that gives a the impression of being in a theatre watching a movie. With a movie audience in the foreground, the stamps sit right on the screen. Movie-themed cancels depict a bag of popcorn and a soft drink with a straw. "The cancels connect the audience to the silver screen and help to create a real movie experience," said designer John Belisle.

The Canadians in Hollywood: The Sequel stamp series can be used for everyday mailing, and for those who enjoy collecting movie memorabilia or stamps Canada Post is offering postcards (stamped for mailing anywhere in the world). The stamp booklets will also randomly feature one of the four Canadians in Hollywood on the cover, adding additional collectability to the set; or a set of the four booklets can be purchased.

The domestic rate stamps measure 30.75 mm x 48.75 mm (vertical) with simulated perforations. The painting hangs on the wall at the Åland Art Museum and this distinguishable painting will be available as a stamp in August.

In the 19th century, big wedding feasts in Åland could only be afforded by the more well-to-do people. Festivities varied from place to place and changed over the years. The wedding often began by picking up the bride at her home. The bridal cortège was accompanied by folk musicians and bridal flags, and the festivities often lasted for up to four whole days.

K.E. Jansson sketched the bride in the painting after a living model, Ida, a crofter’s girl from Karrböle in Jomala. Karl Emanuel had met Ida at a wedding feast and become fond of her looks. She was no actual bride, but she was dressed in a bridal gown in order to be portrayed. Since the 1960s, the municipality of Jomala has organized festivities showing us how the old-fashioned peasant weddings were celebrated. A special cancellation will be arranged this summer in connection with the Peasant Wedding Fair on 6 July.

The painting ‘Åland Peasant Bride’ was finished in 1869, five years before Karl Emanuel died from tuberculosis, only 28 years old. The spectacular painting was purchased by the Finnish Art Society and can now be seen at the Åland Art Museum.

Date of issue: 15 August 2008
Artist: Karl Emanuel Jansson
Design: Cecilia Mattsson
Edition: 200 000
Denomination: €1.50
Price FDC: €2.00
Size of stamp: 29.07 x 38 mm
Size of sheet: 2 x 15 stamps
Perforation: 13 per 2 cm
Paper: 110 g/m²
Printing method: 4+1-colour offset
Printing house: Cartor Security Printing
Thank's For visiting My Blog
Stamp Collectorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13853286684706798995noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2717075843474620030.post-87522038252529493242008-07-12T13:36:00.001+07:002008-07-12T13:50:04.498+07:00'Jersey Festival of Speed' stamp

On 23rd August 2008, Jersey Post will issue a Miniature Sheet highlighting the Classic and Vintage Motor Racing Club of Jersey's annual 'Festival of Speed'. The two domestic rate stamps, a joint issue with Japan Post, celebrate the 100th anniversary of the publication of Lucy Maud Montgomery's internationally acclaimed Anne of Green Gables.
When Lucy Maud Montgomery set the story of her charming red-haired orphan Anne Shirley in Prince Edward Island, she was doing what writers do – writing about what she knew best. Having been raised by her grandparents outside of Cavendish, she gave young Anne the green fields of buttercups and introduced the world to an amazing character we still cherish today.

A first for Canada Post...
Recognizing how powerful the lure of the imaginary Anne is to readers, Canada Post created a cancellation mark for the town of Avonlea for the stamp's official first day cover. This is the first time the corporation has developed a cancellation located in a fictional town. It is paired with a an official cancel from Cavendish, the town which serves as the inspiration for the novel.

Designed by Trampoline's Oliver Hill and Dennis Page, the stamps feature paintings by Ben Stahl and Chris Kovacs. The use of warm hues of reds in Anne's hair and the sandbars in the background, as well as the blues in the water and sky were carefully chosen to capture Anne's vibrant nature and Prince Edward Island's unique land and sea scape. As NASA’s new goal is to have astronauts back on the moon by 2020 what better way to pay tribute than to recall the last trip! The agency has scheduled unmanned missions between 2008 and 2011 to map out landing sites and to find a spot for a permanent moon base.
The Apollo 11 mission was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. It was the fifth human spaceflight of the Apollo program and the third human voyage to the moon. Launched on July 16, 1969, it carried Commander Neil Alden Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Eugene ‘Buzz’ Aldrin, Jr. On July 20, Armstrong and Aldrin became the first humans to land on the Moon, while Collins orbited above.
The mission fulfilled President John F. Kennedy’s goal of reaching the moon by the end of the 1960s: “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth” (1961 speech).

Thank's For visiting My Blog
Stamp Collectorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13853286684706798995noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2717075843474620030.post-88588443790127771972008-06-24T09:52:00.002+07:002008-06-24T10:00:21.540+07:00Life and work of 'Major Bosshardt' recognised in commemorative stamp set

A set of nine postage stamps has been produced in the Netherlands to celebrate the life of the country's most famous Salvationist – and one of its best-loved citizens – Lieut-Colonel Alida M. Bosshardt OF.
Ms. Bosshardt joined the Salvation Army in 1934 and was instructed to work with women in the city's Red Light District shortly after the end of World War II. The colonel died in June 2007 - 94 years old - after a lifetime serving the poor and needy. She spent more than 50 years working for the Salvation Army and established a centre in Amsterdam's Red Light District for prostitutes and drug addicts.

The nine stamps, each worth 44 eurocents, feature a variety of photographs or illustrations of 'De Majoor' ['The Major'] – as she was known even after promotion to lieut-colonel – in her famous Salvation Army bonnet.

Thank's For visiting My Blog
Stamp Collectorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13853286684706798995noreply@blogger.com
