As a volunteer Wish Grantor for the Make a Wish Foundation, I recently had the pleasure of fulfilling a child's wish to go to Legoland with his family. David Gagnon, a local lego artist generously donated his time to build this awesome lego star to help me make this wish even more special. It even has a hidden hook at the top!

David is quite involved in the Vancouver Lego community and was last building a lego unicycle to contribute to the Lego exhibit at Science World. Thanks David! Go check out his work!

Global's 16:9 (Episode 106): Rays of Rash and Dirty Energy

This video reveals the dangers of CFLs, which emit high amounts of UV rays and radio frequencies.

As much as I want to be green, I cannot use CFLs because they make me feel dizzy and nauseous, but I didn't know why. My mom and I are also UV sensitive and my mom started getting a rash immediately after she installed a CFL. This video explains why. If incandescent lights are banned in Canada, this will be a major problem. I hope LEDs are the answer.

*sun (UV/photo) sensitivity/allergy can be caused by a number of reasons, including certain diseases, drugs, naturally sensitive skin, a confused immune system or hormonal changes from pregnancy. Boooo.

After seeing a friend of mine make a kick ass rainbow cake, I had to try making one too! I didn't want to use too much food coloring because I'm unsure what it chemically contains, so it turned out to be more of a pastel rainbow cake, which is equally fun. Because I used a baking pan that's meant for things like banana bread, you can see how the heat rose and cycled through the batter by noticing how the colors warped. Pretty neat!

If you want to make your own, I just bought a simple Betty Crocker Vanilla cake mix and a mini pack of food coloring. Mix the batter, divide into your colors, pour your colors one by one to create individual layers and bake! If you want more distinct layers, I'm guessing you should bake it in a traditional oven for even heat distribution. I baked mine in a toaster oven to conserve energy, which might be why the warping from the heat is more extreme.

To avoid your hands from getting splattered with food coloring, try opening the bottle caps while the bottle is wrapped in a paper towel. I find the cap splatters each time I snap it open and closed. I learned this tip while making colorful homemade playdough as a kid ;o)

A few of us attended a luau themed Dr Sketchy's life drawing session last week. It was a bit hard to draw in theatre seats, but it was entertaining nonetheless. Especially the ukelele singer. For more drawings from the night, check out May Waaaaa, Sarah and Meghan's posts! :)

Congrats to the Okapod i team for receiving an Oscar nomination last week for Best Animated Short! It must be amazing to be up there with contenders like Pixar! I had the honor of seeing their gradshow debut two summers ago at the Gobelins summer school, and we were so blown away by their talent. The team was so kind to give us a class talk, even though they were in the middle of finishing the film. I wish them the best of luck!

Shirley Valentine, at the Gateway Theatre, was my absolute favorite theatre piece this year. Lois Anderson did such an amazing monologue that it made me go to the library just to reread the script. I don't think I've ever been that drawn into a local performance since 7 Stories.

The Drowsy Chaperone, at the Vancouver Playhouse was another fun surprise to watch and the concept was brilliantly charming.

Cirque du Solei's Corteo was another impressive highlight. It was my very first time seeing a Cirque performance and I'm very glad I went!

Thanks VIDF for another annual 3 weeks of free life drawing! They turned out kinda coffee shop sketchy cuz I drew them in my sketchbook instead of the usual newsprint pad. I loved how I could just walk over, from the studio to the sessions, during my lunch hour this year :)

I don't know what the fad is with this sewing plush toy thing so one weekend in January I sewed some of the characters from the show I've been animating. They turned out pretty not bad and now they sit together at the studio.

I went to a play last week and I sat beside this old couple who must have (must of?) had an argument before they arrived. I couldn't figure out what the old lady was bickering about, but wow, was she uber bitter. She didn't take her jacket off the entire night and kept her purse clenched and on her lap the whole time too. I keep making up stories of what it could have been about. Here's a sample of her remarks, but I couldn't make sense of it.

They paved a highway right through my grandma's farm in Japan. There's also a new shinkansen line in the background.

This is supposedly a fire hydrant cover, which warns drivers not to park here.
