MoCCA Recap (Kinda)

MoCCA Art Fest 09 was a blast! Sundays 3 seemed to do well and everyone had a great time. Oh, something something hot, something something no air conditioning, something something expensive tables! I think I heard something about that.

I don't have many photos or anything, but awesome books found at the show so far include:

Sundays 3 Preview

Hi all, just a quick note to let you know that Sundays 3 is mostly done and we'll be at MoCCA this weekend at table 807, along the back wall of the Armory on 26th and Park. Come on out and say hi!

What follows is a preview of just one of the three books of the new Sundays 3 anthology... still to come as part of Sundays 3, a book by Chuck McBuck and Melissa Mendes and another book by Joe Lambert and James Hindle. What? WHAT? That's right. You heard me.

Sundays 3!!!

Here's a little preview from Sundays 3. This Sundays will be a little different than the last few - it's going to be three small books packaged together. I'm working on a book with co-editor Alex Kim and we've got some exciting stories from awesome contributors John Brodowski, Lydia Conklin, Blaise Larmee and Annie Murphy. Chuck McBuck and Joe Lambert are working on the other two books. The books will debut in one shiny package at MoCCA in a few weeks. Can't hardly wait. Check out the Sundays site in the meantime for some free color comics by Joe and Alex and other Sundays contributors.

Head on over to the Sundays website for more info about Sundays 3. Co-editor Joe Lambert has done this beautiful color illustration and he's posting some colored comics on the blog there. First up is co-editor Alex Kim, he of the Xeric-winning Wall City.

The book will debut at MoCCA and has quite the roster of contributors. It should be a lot of fun. Check it out!

Trivial Book Release

Friday night was a book release party for the Trivial Anthology put together by IKJK and co, led by editor A.L. Arnold. Thompson Street Comics hosted the event. It was a lot of fun! Thompson Street Comics owner Preston was very gracious and we got a lot of friends out in support. Not sure if there are any pictures, but for now check out Andrew's sweet cover and the awesome poster Alexis Frederick-Frost made for the event. Andrew, Alexis and Alex Kim have stories in there, as do I. You can purchase Trivial at I Know Joe Kimpel, along with a lot of other great comics.

Also, check out the awesome new book by Alexis and Andrew and James Sturm, Adventures in Cartooning. Starred review in Publisher's Weekly! Ow! Nice work, boys.

Thanks again to everyone who came out! I think a few lucky people got Alex to draw them a flower!

NYCC and New Bash Strip

The magic of inking left me feeling a little flat, so along with the help of photoshop I added some graytones. I've never used them before but, like a liberal arts student who encounters psychotropic substances, I will experiment.

I Got a Scanner

So I finally got a scanner: the relatively affordable Mustek A3 USB pro scanner. If you have a Mac and Photoshop and need an 11 x 17 scanner, it's a good deal and it's been working for me so far.

The panel above is the pencils for the beginning of a Clay and the Ghost humor strip I'm working on for Bash! Magazine. The strip will be "out of continuity" as they say, and hopefully a way to have fun with the characters and bring out elements in them I haven't gotten to in the proper story of Only Skin yet. Bash has some of my stuff being posted on their site in the next few days. This current strip will be in their next print edition in January and go up on their site in January, etc.

SPX and TCJ

So a bunch of the CCS crew got featured in the new Comics Journal, issue 293. There's a three page preview of Only Skin 3 and great comics by Dane Martin, Chuck Forsman, Alex Kim and a lot of other members of the graduating class of 08.

SPX was a lot of fun. Super congrats to Chuck for taking home two bricks (ignatz awards) for his awesome series Snake Oil. The rest of the show was kind of a blur, and I'm just starting to catch up on reading comics from the event - for now I'll say that Theo Ellsworth's Capacity and Nate Powell's Swallow Me Whole are completely awesome and worth picking up. Souvlaki Circus was another cool find (originally pointed out to me by Chuck, I think) - a bizarre, charming book of drawings that do tell a loose narrative. The drawings are amazing.

As usual I didn't take many pictures myself, but Joe has his usual nice wrap-up here and here and D&Q has something terrifying here.

SPX this weekend

Well, SPX is here, seemingly insanely early, but it's here. The image above is one I screen printed, with the help and advice of studio-dawg Alex Kim, who will be debuting his Xeric-winning graphic novel Wall City at the show. I'll have screen prints for sale, along with issues 1-3 of Only Skin. We'll be at the Sundays table, selling Sundays 2 and some other goodies.

Also at our table will be good friends Joe Lambert, who is proud papa/contributor to Best American Comics 2008 and Chuck McBuck Forsman who has been nominated for three Ignatz awards for his exceptional series Snake Oil.

Some Pencils and an Inkstuds Interview

Well, I don't have a scanner, but I guess I can take pictures of the pages I'm working on. So, here are a few pencils, pages 10 and 11 of Only Skin 4.

Review on Le Zata and A Sad Realization

The French website Le Zata has reviewed Only Skin here. I can't read it, but maybe you can?

Also, I finally got a job in NY and have a lead on a long-term place and all that exhausting stuff has led me to the sad realization that there's no way I can finish Only Skin 4 for SPX. I think it will be better to take my time and make the issue the best it can be rather than rush out a shorter, inferior product just to make SPX - even though the idea of having something ready for SPX is incredibly tempting. If all goes well, I may be done in time to send some copies to APE, but again, I'm not going to rush the book. I will try to have some other goodies ready for SPX instead.

Still no scanner in my life, but when I get one I will start posting pages from OS4.

Anyway, go to the real guy's site, it's pretty amazing. That image above is only the roads in America and nothing else. I'm still looking for a job in the black, crater looking region on the upper east coast.
