“Dá-se o nome de Crossover ao evento fictício em que dois ou mais personagens, cenários ou acontecimentos são compartilhados por séries diferentes.”

A tradição de promover encontros entre personagens famosos é bem antiga. Até hoje estes encontros são tratados como uma fórmula certeira para o sucesso. “Frankenstein encontra o Lobisomem” (1943), “Zatoichi meets Yojimbo” (1970), “Emanuelle bianca e nera” (1976) são alguns exemplos dos chamados “crossovers”. É claro que o Cinema italiano não ia deixar de explorar este filão, e os heróis do Spaghetti Western foram um campo fértil para os produtores. Abaixo, alguns dos melhores (e piores!) encontros do Western All’Italiana.

The tradition of promoting “meetings” among famous movie characters is very old. Even nowadays these meetings are treated as a successful formula. “Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man” (1943), “Zatoichi meets Yojimbo” (1970), “Emanuelle bianca e nera” (1976) are good examples of the so called “crossovers”. This seam was explored by the Italian Cinema, of course! The meetings between Spaghetti Western heroes became a great field for the producers. No dia 5* de Junho de 1878 nasceu o herói, bandido e revolucionário mexicano Pancho Villa. A história de Villa sempre causou fascinação no Cinema. O bandoleiro foi retratado em alguns Eurowesterns além de clássicos dos cinemas americano e mexicano.
O amigo Elton Brasil avisa que o DVD de "Villa, o caudilho" (Villa rides) está sendo lançado no Brasil. Em Widescreen!

RINGO

Desde as primeiras décadas do Cinema, Ringo tem sido um nome bastante popular nos Westerns, vide o clássico de John Ford “No tempo das diligências” (Stagecoach-1939), onde John Wayne interpreta o pistoleiro conhecido como “The Ringo Kid”. Mas o nome acabou eternamente ligado ao Spaghetti Western com o grande sucesso dos dois filmes de Duccio Tessari: “Una pistola per Ringo” e “Il ritorno di Ringo”, nos quais o herói é interpretado por Giuliano Gemma. Mesmo antes disso, o western espanhol “Antes llega la muerte”, de 1964, já contava com um personagem chamado Ringo, neste caso interpretado por Robert Hundar. Mas foi com Gemma que o herói se tornou uma febre, aparecendo em vários títulos. Em muitas ocasiões, o nome original de algum personagem era mudado para Ringo nas versões internacionais, como é o caso do filme de Sergio Corbucci “Johnny Oro” (1966), no qual o Johnny de Mark Damon vira Ringo na versão em inglês. As paródias também atacaram em peso em obras como “I due figli di Ringo” (1967) e “Rita nel West” (1967). A seguir, alguns filmes que possuem o herói Ringo em sua versão italiana:

Since the first decades of Cinema, “Ringo” has been a very common character name in Western movies, as can be seen in John Ford’s classic “Stagecoach” (1939) where John Wayne plays a gunfighter known as “The Ringo Kid”. But the name became eternally linked to the Spaghetti Western genre after the success of Duccio Tessari’s “A pistol for Ringo” and “The return of Ringo” in wich the hero is played by Giuliano Gemma. Dois anos de Dollari Rosso! Two Years of Dollari Rosso!

Compañeros, no último mês de Abril, o blog Dollari Rosso completou dois anos de existência. Neste período, a popularidade do Dollari Rosso cresceu bastante e hoje temos muitos amigos em várias partes do mundo. Tudo começou no fim de 2002, quando criei (com ajuda de meu irmão Alexandre Almeida) o hoje extinto site “spaghettiwestern.hpg.com.br”, o primeiro site brasileiro dedicado exclusivamente ao Spaghetti Western. Logo depois veio o primeiro fórum de SW, no também extinto site “Nosso Grupo” (que depois migrou para o Yahoo Groups http://br.groups.yahoo.com/group/spaghettiwestern/). Em 2005, foi criado o site Dollari Rosso (http://br.geocities.com/dollarirosso/Home.html), com a ajuda do amigo Rogério Ferraz. E foi assim que surgiu o Blog Dollari Rosso em 2006 (que atualmente conta com a colaboração do velho amigo Rafael Hansen Quinsani e do novo compañero Cayman Moreyra). Espero que vocês tenham apreciado o nosso trabalho! Um abraço e obrigado a todos!

Compañeros, in the last April, Dollari Rosso Blog completed two years of existence. From the early days until now, the popularity of the Blog has grown amazingly! Nowadays Dollari Rosso has many friends around the world. It all begun in 2002, when I created, with the help of my brother Alexandre Almeida, the first Brazilian blog exclusively dedicated to the Spaghetti Western (the extinct spaghettiwestern.hpg.com). A few months later, the first Brazilian SW Internet Forum was created in the also extinct site “Our Group” (wich migrated to Yahoo Groups http://br.groups.yahoo.com/group/spaghettiwestern/). In 2005, the site Dollari Rosso (http://br.geocities.com/dollarirosso/Home.html) was released, with the help of my friend Rogerio Ferraz. The evolution of that Geocities site is the blog Dollari Rosso, created in 2006 (and now has the collaboration of my old friend Rafael Hansen Quinsani and the new compañero Cayman Moreyra). I hope you have appreciated our work through these years. Thanks to all and take care!

John Phillip Law (1937-2008)

Mais uma triste notícia para os fãs do Spaghetti Western. Faleceu no dia 13 de Maio o ator John Phillip Law, que estrelou ao lado de Lee Van Cleef um dos maiores clássicos do gênero: “A morte anda a cavalo” (Da Uomo a Uomo), de Giulio Petroni. Além deste filme, Law vai ser lembrado com carinho por obras como “Diabolik” (de Mario Bava) e “Barbarella” (de Roger Vadim).

More sad news to Spaghetti Western fans. Actor John Phillip Law died on May, 13. Law starred with Lee Van cleef in one of the greatest classics of the genre: “Death rides a Horse” (Da Uomo a Uomo), directed by Giulio Petroni. He wil also be kindly remembered for films like “Diabolik” (By Mario Bava) and “Barbarella” (By Roger Vadim).

Riding with the Men With no Name – Part II

A small crowd gathers around a man tied over a horse. He has a rope around his neck and he is just waiting to be hanged for an incredibly long list of crimes. While the Sheriff reads the sentence, the man seems to be bored, just waiting for the end of that tedious reading. When the order to carry out the sentence is given, we hear a shot that cuts the rope around the prisoner’s neck who escapes from the town, followed by his savior. A few miles away, the two men divide between them the bounty offered for the bandit. Soon, the two men are repeating the sting: in another town, the fake bounty hunter earns an even bigger reward for the bandit, only to save him a little later. This is a typical example of a Spaghetti Western scene, full of irony and a dark sense of humor. The sequence described above comes from Sergio Leone’s classic “THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY”, maybe his best film, whose production was considered the noisiest and most expensive movie of the genre. But unfortunately for the critics, the film is anthological, some kind of adult fable that tells the story of three men searching for a hidden treasure during the years of the American Civil War. As we know, the last confrontation of the three men became history: the famous “Triello”
In the same year that saw the release of “THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY”, the trail of the “Men with no Name” was in full bloom, with many productions being made. The quality and thematic of those movies were very variable, but all of them had the same identity: to use the magic ambience of the “Western” to show the cultural effects that were changing the face of the world during the 60s. Despite the fact that many critics thought that everything about the Italian western was fake, artificial, there were a lot of significance behind the screenplays produced at Cinecittá. And the old Monument Valley in the Utah/Arizona border was temporally replaced by Almeria, in Spain, where many films were shot because many American stars started to be part of that landscape: Charles Bronson, Yul Brynner, Eli Wallach, John Ireland, James Coburn, Van Johnson, Van Heflin, Chuck Connors, Tab Hunter, Jeffrey Hunter, Audie Murphy, Burt Reynolds, Joseph Cotten, Rod Cameron, Guy Madisson, Alex Cord, Jack Elam, Jack Palance, Mark Damon, Cameron Mitchell, Tony Anthony, Hunt Powers and Gordon Mitchell among others, besides the absolute icons: Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef.
Italy seemed to be the Promised Land and the western achieved such a stage of poetical depth that many dared to say that movie directors like Sergio Leone were the creators of a “New Cinema”. Other “Men with no Name” came from the four corners of the Earth, riding in search of their place in history: George Hilton, from Uruguay, Tomás Millian, from Cuba, Gianni Garko, from Yugoslavia, William Berger, from Austria, Klaus Kinski from Germany and our beloved Anthony Steffen, the Brazilian/Italian actor. Yes, Brazil also had its Western star, maybe the actor who played more often the character Django.
The Italian western brought a new concept for the genre, and the impact of this innovation became very clear in the cartoonish opening credits of many films, with great use of animation together with that magnificent new style of music. The music became on of the most recognized trademarks of the genre, and some achieved great success at the time of its release. It was very common to hear people whistling the themes of the movies after the sessions. Dialogs like “How was that song on the duel?”, “Man, what a groovy soundtrack this film has!” were present everyday after people went those movies. Soon, real Spaghetti Western legends were created, like Ennio Morricone, the master of the soundtracks, a man who really changed the face of film music. His compositions are priceless, Cinema history, and his Academy Award came too late for such an unbelievable artist. Sergio Leone used to say that Morricone’s music sometimes had more to say than the dialogs of the script. Morricone was responsible for the soundtracks of all the westerns made by Leone. He also created the music for “A pistol for Ringo”, “The return of Ringo”, “Big Gundown”, “Face to Face”, “Companeros”, “The mercenary”, “Seven guns for the McGregors” among many others.
But there were many other great musicians in the genre like Bruno Nicolai, Luis Bacalov, Vasco and Mancuso, Guido & Maurizio de Angelis and Francesco De Masi (“Dio te Acompagne”), who was one of the most popular composers of the SW. He showed a great personality and creativity, creating unforgettable scores for films like “Quanto costa morire”, “Sartana non perdona”, “7 Winchester per un massacro” and “Arizona Colt”. Some great singers are also worth of note. Singers whose voices were in the same level of Frankie Lane, Ed Ames or Johnny Cash: Maurizio de Graf, Bobby Solo, Peter Tevis, Christy, Nico Fidenco, Sergio Endrigo, Don Powell, Rocky Roberts, Roberto Fia, Raoul, etc...
A big part of the power from the SW soundtracks comes from their performances in the songs. And some times, those songs were better than the films...

EPILOGUE:

From the early days until its apex, the Spaghetti Western brought to the world of cinema a baroque, sarcastic and violent look. The genre was, very often, politically incorrect. Also, a very strong left winged political point of view can be seen in such movies like “A bullet for the General” and “Big Gundown”, by Damiano Damiani and Sergio Sollima respectively. Among the filmmakers, besides Sergio Leone, there were other three Sergios: Sollima, Corbucci and Garrone. All of them were real masters of the genre. Many other filmmakers can be considered of great importance: Romolo Guerrieri ($10.000 Blood Money), Duccio Tessari (A Pistol for Ringo), Frank Kramer (Sabata, Sartana), Giulio Petroni (Death Rides a Horse), Tonino Valerii (Day of Anger), Enzo G. Castellari (Keoma), Carlo Lizzani (Kill and Pray), Ferdinando Baldi (Blindman)...

A comment:

There is one name that usually is not included in the lists of the best filmmakers, but certainly, must be remembered: Demofilo Fidani, considered the “Ed Wood” of the Italian Western. It doesn’t matter if that comparison is fair or not, I fondly remember one of the first films I saw on the big screen at a much missed Grindhouse of my town. It was “Arrivano Django e Sartana, è la fine”, starring Hunt Powers. Maybe Fidani deserves to be called Ed Wood of the Italian Westerns; both of them worked in precarious conditions and loved the cinema.

It’s about time to make a real homage to the Spaghetti Western, using once again the landscapes of Almeria. Not a homage like “800 Bullets”, a good film by the way, but an authentic western, true to the tradition of the Italian masters. I hope Quentin Tarantino or Robert Rodriguez are reading this article! Those who, like me, lived those glorious days, are long waiting for our missed heroes to return like they were: immortals, eternally riding in our memories, our memories of those obscure movie theaters, which no longer exist, not even… a name.

Uma multidão de curiosos acerca-se de um homem montado em um cavalo com uma corda pendendo frouxa, em seu pescoço. Enquanto é lida sua sentença por um juiz do vilarejo, o indivíduo parece estar entediado de tanto esperar pelo término da leitura de sua longa lista de crimes. Quando é dada a ordem para que o xerife local bata no animal, cumprindo assim a sentença, ouve-se um disparo de rifle e o prisioneiro escapa seguido por seu salvador. Mais adiante, num esconderijo qualquer, os dois dividem a quantia da recompensa pedida pelo bandido. Logo mais, os dois repetem o golpe: o caçador de recompensas leva o criminoso preso até a cidade mais próxima e reclama o prêmio pela sua cabeça que, por sinal já aumentou, e depois o salva na hora certa para em seguida dividirem o dinheiro. Seqüência típica do Western Italiano, repleta de ironia e humor negro. O quadro descrito pertence a um dos mais importantes filmes do ciclo: “THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY”. Obra-prima de Sergio Leone, aqui talvez em seu melhor filme, cuja realização já foi considerada a mais barulhenta e cara produção do gênero. Para a infelicidade dos críticos, o filme em si é antológico e conta uma espécie de fábula para adultos, em que três homens, envolvem-se em uma busca por uma enorme quantia de dinheiro roubada em plena Guerra Civil Americana, cada qual tentando sobrepujar o outro até um inesquecível confronto a três. O famoso “TRIELLO”, como ficou conhecido.
No ano da produção deste filme, a trilha dos homens sem nome estava em pleno auge, com várias películas lançadas ao mesmo tempo por vários realizadores. Filmes que variavam de tema e qualidade, mas com a mesma identidade: usar no espaço mágico do “Western” todo um simbolismo que pudesse mostrar nas telas os efeitos culturais que causaram as transformações e mudaram a cara do mundo nos anos 60. Embora muitos pensem que nas produções italianas tudo era farsa e brincadeira, havia muita coisa por trás dos roteiros que a Cinecittà produzia. E o velho Monument Valley, no Utah/Arizona, foi temporariamente substituído pelas planícies da Almeria, na Espanha, onde a maioria dos filmes tinha locação, pois, várias estrelas do cinema Norte-Americano, além de Clint Eastwood, passaram a fazer parte daquele cenário: astros bastante conhecidos como Charles Bronson, Yul Brynner, Eli Wallach, John Ireland, James Coburn, Van Johnson, Van Heflin, Chuck Connors, Tab Hunter, Jeffrey Hunter, Audie Murphy [imaginem só! Em um de seus últimos filmes “The Texican”], Burt Reynolds, Joseph Cotten, Rod Cameron, Guy Madisson, Alex Cord, Jack Elam, Jack Palance, Mark Damon, Cameron Mitchell, Tony Anthony, Hunt Powers, Gordon Mitchell e outros, além dos ícones absolutos: Eastwood e Lee Van Cleef.
A Itália parecia ser a terra prometida e o Western ganhou uma densidade tão grande que muitos ousaram dizer que diretores como Sergio Leone eram precursores de um cinema novo. Outros “homens sem nome” vieram de outras partes do mundo, cavalgando em busca de um lugar na fronteira: George Hilton, do Uruguai, Tomás Millian, de Cuba, Gianni Garko, da Iugoslávia, William Berger, da Áustria, Klaus Kinski da Alemanha e... nosso saudoso Anthony Steffen do Brasil. É isso mesmo, tivemos também nosso homem sem nome, apontado até hoje, como um maiores ícones do Western Spaghetti e talvez o ator que mais protagonizou o personagem Django. Houveram rumores de que mais um brasileiro teria sido cogitado para fazer parte desse time: Tarcísio Meira. No entanto, não há nada de concreto sobre iisso, mas já deu para imaginar “Il Pistoleiro Dell’ Ave Maria” protagonizado por ele?
O western italiano trouxe também um formato novo para o gênero e o impacto dessa inovação ficou claramente definido na abertura dos filmes, com montagens animadas mostrando uma linguagem cinematográfica mais atraente, ligada à música e esta sim, tornou-se uma característica típica, cujas trilhas tornavam-se antológicas logo no lançamento dos filmes. Não era raro ver alguém assobiando os temas na saída dos cinemas e depois os comentários: “Como era mesmo a música do duelo?”, “Rapaz, que trilha legal a deste filme que está passando!” Era incrível como o público daquela época, longe ainda dos arroubos sem nexo da mídia de hoje, tinha ouvido. E surgiram logo os monstros sagrados do Spaghetti Western, a começar pelo “Papa” das partituras cinematográficas: Ennio Morricone, o homem que realmente mudou a cara das trilhas sonoras e incidentais. Suas composições não têm preço no acervo cultural do cinema e o Oscar por ele recebido pelo conjunto de sua obra veio, em minha opinião, tardio. Não é à toa que Sergio Leone tenha dito que a música de Morricone falava mais do que os diálogos do roteiro. Todos os filmes de Leone têm sua marca. Morricone ainda fez as belas trilhas de: “O Retorno de Ringo” e “Uma Pistola para Ringo”, “Face a Face”, “O Dia da Desforra”, “Companheiros”, “Os violentos vão para o Inferno”, “7 Pistolas Para os McGregors”, e muitos outros. Além de Morricone outros nomes importantes foram Bruno Nicolai (que dirigiu muitas de suas trilhas), Luis Bacalov, Vasco e Mancuso, Nora Orlandi, Nico Fidenco, Marcelo Giombini, Stelvio Cipriani, Guido e Maurizio de Angelis e Francesco de Masi (falecido recentemente -“Dio te Acompagne”) que, ao lado de Fidenco, mais se aproximou de Morricone em termos de criatividade, mostrando uma característica própria de compor com trilhas que logo lhe deram destaque: “Quanto Costa Morire”, “Sartana Non Perdona”, “7 Winchesters Per Un Massacro”, “Arizona Colt” e outras mais, todas excelentes. E também merecem ser citados os cantores, sim, uma grande safra de belas vozes que nada deviam a Frankie Laine, Ed Ames ou Johnny Cash: Maurizio de Graf, Bobby Solo, Peter Tevis, Christy, Nico Fidenco, Sergio Endrigo, Don Powell, Rocky Roberts, Roberto Fia, Raoul, etc... Muitas das trilhas sonoras devem sua força à interpretação destes artistas, sempre bem inspirados. E muitas vezes, o filme em si era bem menor que o tema...

Epílogo:

Do período Áureo até o apogeu, o Spaghetti Western trouxe para o mundo um visual barroco, sarcástico, violento e muitas vezes politicamente incorreto, como foi o caso de “A Bullet for the General” e “The Big Gundown” de Damiano Damiani e Sergio Solima, respectivamente. Entre os grandes realizadores, além de Leone, houve mais três Sergios: Sollima, Corbucci e Garrone, todos com obras de renome. Ainda é preciso destacar grandes nomes como Romolo Guerrieri (Django mata por dinheiro/10.000 Dólares para Django), Duccio Tessari (Uma pistola para Ringo), Frank Kramer (Sabata, Sartana), Giulio Petroni (A morte anda a cavalo), Tonino Valerii (o dia da ira), Enzo G. Castellari (Keoma), Carlo Lizzani (Réquiem para matar), Ferdinando Baldi (Blindman)...
Uma observação:
- Há aqui um nome que geralmente não é incluído nas listas dos melhores, mas que certamente, deve ser lembrado: Demofilo Fidani, considerado o “Ed Wood” do Western Italiano. Justa ou não a comparação, guardo na lembrança um de seus filmes com muito carinho, pois foi um dos primeiros que vi num saudoso “poeira” da minha cidade: “Django e Sartana no Dia da Vingança [Arrivano Django e Sartana, è la fine]”. Pode até ser que Fidani mereça a alcunha, pois como Ed Wood, ele com certeza amava o cinema e trabalhava em condições precárias. O Django feito por Hunt Powers, um de seus atores prediletos, é bem diferente de Franco Nero ou Anthony Steffen. E falando em diretores ruins, Fidani perde feio, para a maioria dos pseudocineastas dos “Block-Busters” atuais.

- O cinema de hoje bem poderia fazer uma saudosa homenagem e voltar a ocupar as pradarias da Almeria, não ao estilo de “800 Balas”, que por sinal é um bom filme, mas com uma homenagem totalmente fiel às melhores produções daquele ciclo dourado. Que Tarantino e Robert Rodriguez nos ouçam! Aqueles que como eu, tiveram a sorte de estarem presentes lá, sempre com algo de novo ou uma boa reprise para ver, sentem saudades de ver todos os heróis como sempre estiveram, solitários ou no máximo a três: Ringo, Django, Sartana, Pecos, Sabata, Gringo, Trinity e seu inseparável irmão e até o último deles, Keoma. Eram e serão sempre, eternos, cavalgando em nossas memórias daqueles cinemas obscuros, muitos dos quais não resta sequer... um nome.

Orson Welles:
O senhor Cidadão Kane em pessoa atua como um Coronel mexicano em Tepepa (1968), de Giulio Petroni. Embora sua interpretação seja bastante contestada, o personagem é um vilão de primeira. O filme ainda conta com Tomas Milian e John Steiner em tremendas atuações. Um trio de peso!

Mr. Citizen Kane himself plays a Mexican Colonel in Giulio Petroni’s masterpiece Tepepa (1968). Although his performance has a few detractors, the character is a first class villain. Tomas Milian and John Steiner are also in the movie, both of them giving strong performances. A magnificent cast!

John Huston:
Outro grande diretor do Cinema americano a se aventurar como ator em um Western europeu. O filme é The Deserter (1971), sob a direção de Burt Kennedy. Huston tem um papel pequeno, mas sua presença é sempre marcante. “The deserter” foi lançado em DVD como “O Desertor”. A imagem é bem ruimzinha e está em full-screen.

Another great American Cinema filmmaker to perform as na actor in na European Western was John Huston. The film is The Deserter (1971), by Burt Kennedy. Huston plays a small role, but his presence is always remarkable.

Christopher Lee:
Lee é sem dúvida um dos maiores nomes do Cinema de Horror de todos os tempos. Em sua longa carreira (60 anos!!), atuou em apenas um Western: Hannie Caulder (1971), também dirigido por Burt Kennedy, uma co-produção Inglaterra/Espanha. Sua participação é pequena, mas é o melhor momento do filme. Hannie Caulder foi lançado em VHS com o título “Desejo de vingança”.

Lee is undoubtedly one of the greatest myths of the Horror movies. He made only one Western in his long (60 years) career: Hannie Caulder (1971), also directed by Burt Kennedy. The film is a co-production between England and Spain. He has a short appearance, but it’s the best moment of the film.

Sean Connery:
O eterno James Bond interpreta Carlin, Shalako Carlin, um caçador e rastreador que ajuda um grupo de nobres europeus a fugir de um ataque de guerreiros Apaches. Connery está pouco a vontade e apesar de filmado na Espanha, o filme de Edward Dmytryk está longe do estilo peculiar do Spaghetti Western. Shalako (1968) está disponível em DVD no Brasil.

The eternal James Bond plays Carlin, Shalako Carlin, a trapper and hunter who helps a group of rich Europeans to escape from an attack by the Apaches. Connery seems to be uncomfortable with his role and the movie by Edward Dmytryk lacks that peculiar Euro Western feeling. Shalako (1968)

William Shatner:
O capitão Kirk interpreta irmãos gêmeos naquele que é considerado um dos piores Spaghetti Westerns de todos os tempos: White Apache (Comanche blanco - 1968). Realmente o filme é de doer, Shatner caracterizado como índio é simplesmente ridículo.

Captain Kirk plays twin brothers in a film that is considered one of the worst Spaghetti Westerns of all time: White Apache (Comanche blanco - 1968). The movie is really all that bad you could imagine and Shatner as the brother raised by the Indians is simply ridiculous.

Leslie Nielsen:
Entre os papéis de galã nos anos 50 e a consagração definitiva como comediante nos anos 80, Nielsen teve um momento bastante obscuro em sua carreira. É desta época que vem Four Rode Out (1971), outra co-produção EUA/Espanha que contava ainda com a Lolita de Kubrick, Sue Lyon. Surpreendentemente, Nielsen é o vilão e convence como psicopata. Lançado em VHS no Brasil como “Quatro foram embora”.

Between the leading man days in the 50’s and the definitive stablishment as a comedian in the 80’s, there was na obscure period in Leslie Nielsen’s career. It’s from these days that comes Four Rode Out (1971), another American/Spanish co-production. Stanley Kubrick’s Lolita, Sue Lyon, is also in the movie. Surprisingly, Nielsen is the villain and gives a convincing performance as a psychopath.

Pier Paolo Pasolini:
O polêmico cineasta italiano está no excelente Requiescant (1967), de Carlo Lizzani, seu único envolvimento com um Western. Pasolini ainda não havia dirigido seus filmes mais famosos, mas já era uma figura respeitadíssima no cenário da época. Mais uma prova do prestígio do gênero. Requiescant está disponível em DVD como “Réquiem para matar”, ótima edição em widescreen.

The controversial Italian filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini is in the excellent Requiescant (1967), by Carlo Lizanni. At the time Requiescant was made, Pasolini hadn’t directed his most famous movies but he was already a much respected personality of the era. This is another proof of the prestige of the genre.

Frank Wolff (1928-1971, Ator/Actor)

A brilliant actor. That’s how Walter Frank Hermann Wolff, known by the fans of the European Cinema as Frank Wolff, can be defined. Wolff was born in San Francisco in the year of 1928. Attending Drama classes at the UCLA, he met the future filmmaker Monte Hellman, and they became great friends. Together, they started to work in productions by Roger Corman at the end of 50’s. Frank Wolff had his first prominent role in the first film directed by Hellman. The movie was the classic B-Horror “Beast from Haunted Cave”, where he already demonstrates his fantastic talent to play villains. In 1961, Wolff moved to Europe, following the advice of Roger Corman.
It was in the Spaghetti Western that he found more prominence, working in great films with the main directors of the genre. His gallery of characters is enviable. In many occasions, Wolff overshadowed his colleagues playing incredibly villainous roles such as Bill San Antonio from “God forgives, I don’t” (“Dio perdona, io no!” by Giuseppe Colizzi) or the bandit leader Aguila, from “A Stranger in town” (“Un Dollaro tra i denti”, by Luigi Vanzi). One of the best performances in his career can be found in the film “Last of the Badmen/Time of vultures” (“Il tempo degli avvoltoi”), by Nando Cícero, where he plays Joshua “The Black One” Tracy, an extremely sadistic outlaw, a character with homosexual undertones who suffers with constant epileptic seizures.
For the fans of mainstream Cinema, Wolff will be better remembered as the rude Irish farmer Brett McBain in Sergio Leone’s classic “Once upon a time in the West” (“C' era una volta il West”), a small, but very impressive role.
Although being marked by Western and villain characters, Frank Wolff was a versatile actor and worked successfully in many other genres, from comedy (Quando le donne avevano la coda -1970) to drama (Salvatore Giuliano-1962), and from war films (La battaglia del deserto -1969) to crime thrillers (Milano Calibro 9-1972). Unfortunately, Frank Wolff committed suicide at his room in the Hilton Hotel of Rome on December, 12, 1971. His death was great loss for the Cinema.

Walter Frank Hermann Wolff, conhecido pelos fãs do Cinema europeu como Frank Wolff. Wolff nasceu em São Francisco no ano de 1928. Cursando Teatro na UCLA, conheceu o futuro diretor Monte Hellman, de quem virou um grande amigo. Juntos, começaram a trabalhar em produções de Roger Corman no fim dos anos 50. Frank Wolff começou a ter destaque no primeiro filme dirigido por Hellman, “A besta da caverna assombrada” (“Beast from Haunted Cave”), onde já demonstra o seu talento inigualável para interpretar vilões. Em 1961 se muda para a Europa a conselho de Corman.
Foi no Spaghetti Western que ele encontrou mais destaque, trabalhando em grandes filmes com os principais diretores do gênero. Sua galeria de personagens é invejável, e muitas vezes roubou a cena interpretando vilões antológicos como o Bill San Antonio de “Deus perdoa, eu não!” (“Dio perdona, io no!”, de Giuseppe Colizzi) ou o bandoleiro Aguila de “Um dólar entre os dentes” (“Un Dollaro tra i denti”, de Luigi Vanzi). Uma das melhores atuações de sua carreira está no filme “O último matador” (“Il tempo degli avvoltoi”), de Nando Cícero, onde ele interpreta Joshua “The Black One” Tracy, um bandido extremamente sádico e com tendências homossexuais que sofre com constantes ataques de epilepsia.
Para os fãs de Cinema em geral, Wolff vai ser mais lembrado como o rude fazendeiro irlandês Brett McBain no clássico de Sergio Leone “Era uma vez no Oeste” (“C’era una volta il West”), um papel pequeno, mas muito marcante. Apesar de marcado por Westerns e pelos papéis de vilão, Frank Wolff era um ator versátil e passeou com desenvoltura por variados gêneros, da comédia (Quando le donne avevano la coda-1970) ao drama (Salvatore Giuliano-1962), dos filmes de guerra (La battaglia del deserto-1969) aos policiais (Milano calibro 9-1972).
Infelizmente, Frank Wolff cometeu suicídio no Hotel Hilton de Roma no dia 12 de Dezembro de 1971. Uma grande perda para o Cinema.
