Troop 919 - Departing for Summer Camp on Sunday

Here are a couple of final reminders before we head off to Summer Camp at Camp Raven Knob on Sunday.

Weather Forecast - You might want to check the weather forecast while completing your last minute packing. Usually it’s blazing hot when we are at CRK and I am confident it will be warm during the days again this year. However, it appears we might get a break on the usual high humidity and that the nights are going to be cool. We camp along the creek at Apache and it’s usually even cooler at night there!

Having said all of that, you may want to consider packing a sleeping bag. The night time temps may be in the lower 50s and you might not sleep comfortably in just a sheet and a blanket.

Meeting Time – We are meeting at the Scout Hut at 9 a.m. on Sunday (July 19) to load our gear. Please drop your foot locker and all personal gear in the WCCC parking lot.

Lunch – We are planning to once again stop at the Golden Corral in Mt. Airy for lunch. Mr. Hardin has arranged a nice discount for buffet for us -- $9 for buffet, drink and tip. Thanks Mr. Hardin. If you would like to receive the discount, please pay Mr. Hardin you $9 during check-in.

Troop Shoot – For the last several years we have enjoyed a Troop shoot at the Raven Knob shotgun range as one of our evening activities. We don’t know if we will be lucky enough to get a Troop Shoot again this year until after we arrive at camp.

If you are interested in participating in a Troop shoot, please let us know your interest on Sunday and plan your cash accordingly. The shoot is usually around $10 for a round of 25 shells and clay pigeons.

The Troop shoot will be open to all Scouts and leaders. We are usually limited to 15-20 shooters.

Wednesday Night Picnic – A reminder for your family and friends to join us for the Wednesday night family pot-luck picnic and campfire. Remember to bring enough food to feed your family (don’t forget your son’s favorites) plus a little extra as we usually have a few guests enjoying dinner with us. We will also need drinks for the picnic.

Parents: If you are not going to be able to attend Wednesday’s family night, please let me know this at check-in on Sunday.

Troop 919 Summer Camp Update

Summer Camp Departure - Are you packed and ready to head to Camp Raven Knob for our week at summer camp?

We will be meeting at the Scout Hut at 9 a.m. on Sunday (July 19) to load our personal and Troop gear for summer camp. Please park in the WCCC parking lot and unload your personal gear there. Mark sure all of your personal gear is marked with YOUR name.

Once you have unloaded your personal gear, please head to the Scout Hut for check-in. There will be several check-in stations and you (and in some cases your parents) will need to visit each station.

Stop 1 - Initial Check-In and pay any outstanding fees

Stop 2 - Foot locker key or combination. You will to provide a spare key to your foot locker to the Troop leadership (Scouts have been known to lose their key at summer camp). If you are using a combination lock, write the combination and your name on an index card and place it in a small ziploc bag and write your name on the plastic bag. If you are turning in a key, you should also place the key in a small plastic bag and write your name on the bag.

Stop 3 - Review and update Emergency Contact Info

Stop 4 - Medications. If you are taking any medications with you to summer camp they must be placed in a zip loc bag with your name on the bag. Prescription medications should be in their original package, including dosage instructions. All prescription medication will be held and dispensed by Troop adult leadership or the camp health lodge.

In addition, there are two medication forms that must be completed.

· Prescription Medication Card

A copy of these forms is attached to save you time on Sunday morning. Please have these forms completed when you arrive at the Scout Hut, including parent/guardian signatures.

Stop 5 - Health Form Review. Please review your medical form to see if there have been any changes to your health since you submitted the form to the Troop.

Stop 6 - Temperature check. As a precaution and to protect campers, leaders and staff members from the potential of contracting the Swine Flu, Camp Raven Knob is asking any camper or leader with Flu like symptoms or a temperature greater than 99.7º F not to come to summer camp this year. Sunday Lunch - We have traditionally stopped at the Golden Corral in Mt. Airy for lunch on Sunday for our last meal before arriving at summer camp. We plan to have lunch at this Golden Corral again this year.

Mr. Hardin has made arrangements for a Troop to receive a special discount this year. Our meal, including the buffet, drink and gratuity will be $9.00 per person. To participate in this special discount, please see Mr. Hardin at check-in to pay your $9.00 in advance.

Wednesday Night Pot Luck and Campfire - A reminder about our Wednesday night family pot-luck dinner/picnic and the campfire. Please bring pot-luck dishes to this picnic that your son and family will enjoy. After all, we will have been eating camp food for the past several days! Please bring enough "pot luck" for your family and a few others as we usually have a few camp staffers as our guests on Wednesday night. Troop 919 is famous for its Wednesday night pot-luck.

We also count on our families to bring drinks, like lemonade and that delicious North Carolina sweet tea! Some soft drinks are also welcome.

The Troop will be providing the paper products for the picnic.

We will have a large crowd in our campsite and will start eating around 5:30 p.m. to make sure there is plenty of time for the picnic, fellowship and to get a good seat at the campfire.

All of our families are invited to attend the campfire with our Troop on Wednesday evening. At the campfire there will be camp songs an skits and the Order of the Arrow, Scouting's Honor camping organization, will be recognizing or "calling out" Troop 919 Scouts who will be tapped as ordeal member candidates of the OA at the campfire.

In addition, several Troop 919 Scouts will be participating in the Native American dance pageant that is also part of the campfire.

We are lucky to be attending summer camp on the week the OA recognizes its members with the OA's Vigil Honor and we encourage our families to stay for this portion of the campfire as well.

Our Campsite - We will be staying in the Apache campsite, which is in the camp’s “valley” and located past the OA Arena and the camp's nature area.

Return from Camp – We plan to return from camp around 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 25. We will have our Scouts call when we are enroute with a confirmation of the pick-up time.

Troop 919 Notes for Summer Camp 2009

There is summer camp excitement in the air….we depart for our week of Boy Scout summer camp at the Raven Knob Scout Reservation in less than one month! Our Troop attends summer camp at Camp Raven Knob during the fifth week of summer camp (July 19-25). It will be here before we know it.

We depart for camp on Sunday, July 19 (more info on departure day is listed below) and return to the Scout Hut on Saturday, July 25 around 11:00 a.m., depending on the time we are able to depart Camp Raven Knob. Scouts will call home en route with an updated arrival time

There are still a few Scouts and adult leaders who have not submitted their BSA health and safety form. If you are one of these, please contact Mr. Warner soon. We have to submit copies of our medical forms several weeks in advance of arrival at CRK so the health and safety staff has ample time to review them before our arrival.

And don’t forget that we travel in Class A Uniform and that you will need your lunch money available when we stop in Mt. Airy. That means don't pack your lunch money in your foot locker!

A summer camp checklist that may help you in planning your packing is attached to this e-mail. This list, along with your Scout Handbook, should help you prepare for a fun week at Camp. A map with directions from Winston-Salem to Camp Raven Knob (so your parents/relatives/friends don’t get lost heading to camp on Wednesday night) and a map of Raven Knob (so they’ll know where our campsite is and where to park) is also attached for your convenience.

Summer camp is one of the many highlights of our Troop year and like all Scouting activities, if we are prepared, we’ll be safe, learn something new and have a great time.

Swine Flu

There have been reports of the Swine (H1N1) Flu Virus at several youth camps across the country this summer. Camp Raven Knob is taking several precautionary steps to keep its Scouts, Leaders and Staff safe and healthy this summer.

Camp Raven Knob has issued the following guidelines to help keep everyone healthy during their stay at summer camp.

1. Before coming to camp, if you have been in contact with individuals who have been confirmed to have the H1N1 Virus, CRK would prefer that you not come to Raven Knob this summer. Any fees that have been paid will be refunded.

2. On the Sunday before departing for camp, please have your temperature checked. If you are running a fever of 99.5 or higher please do not come to Raven Knob. Also, if you have other signs of the flu, such as unusual fatigue, ongoing body aches and general weakness, we encourage you to remain at home and to seek medical attention. Again any fees that have been paid will be refunded.

3. Any Scout or leader who becomes sick while in camp and who is suspected of possibly having the H1N1 virus will be quarantined in the Camp’s Infirmary until arrangements can be made for the Scout to return home. Parents will be notified promptly.

Departure Sunday

We will meet at the Scout Hut on Sunday morning (July 19) to load our personal gear and Troop equipment into the trailer at 9:00. We will be making our usual stop for lunch in Mt. Airy (we usually stop at the Golden Corral) and plan to arrive at Camp Raven Knob at about 12:30 p.m. to be there in plenty of time for camp check-in at 1:00.

When you arrive on Sunday morning, please do not pull up in front of the Scout Hut. Drop your personal gear and park in the WCCC parking lot. We will be loading foot lockers and other personal gear from the WCCC parking lot.

The check-in procedure for Departure Sunday will include:

1. Drop personal equipment in the WCCC parking lot and park your vehicle.

2. Check-in at the Scout Hut; pay any outstanding balances; receive tent assignment

3. Review and update emergency contact information

4. Deposit key or combination to your foot locker with Troop leadership

5. Medical Re-Check: Review BSA Health and Safety form for; deposit medications; discuss whether you have any flu-like symptoms or have been in contact with the H1N1 virus with the medical officer

Summer Camp at Camp Raven Knob

Here are a few camp items to consider:

Personal camp equipment. If you need to remind yourself what personal equipment is needed for camp, please refer to camp handout you received earlier this year. If you can’t find this packet, head on over to the Troop 919 website where you can download a copy of our 2009 Summer Camp Guide.

There is a summer camp checklist attached to this e-mail. The same checklist is on our Troop website.

When packing your camp gear, be sure to include sunscreen, water bottle (or camelback), insect repellent, pillow, camp (lawn) chair, hiking staff, hat, daypack (book bag or fanny pack so you can always have your water bottle and rain gear with you), extra shoes (some Scouts bring their hiking boots and a pair of athletic shoes), a flashlight with new batteries (don’t forget to include extra batteries and a spare bulb) and your favorite board game or reading material. Wool socks and liners for each day will help protect your feet.

As a reminder, no open toed shoes (sandals, flip flops) are allowed in camp, except in the shower.

A Scout should always have his 10 essentials. Check your Scout book if you need a reminder.

You’re welcome to bring your pocket knife and totem chip to camp, but leave any sheathed knives at home. They are not allowed in camp. Same goes for electronics, skateboards, rollerblades, etc. No Gameboys, IPods, MP3 players, cell phones, CD players, DVD players, etc. are allowed in camp. DO NOT bring items of value with you to camp. Feel welcome to bring a musical instrument like a guitar or harmonica.

It’s usually pretty hot when we are at camp, so you won’t need that cold weather sleeping bag. Many Scouts bring sheets and a blanked for their bunk. A summer weight sleeping bag works as well.

Another good idea is a mesh laundry bag. It’s about the best way to store your sweaty and wet dirty clothes. You can send you laundry home with your parents on Wednesday night, too. A mesh bag will help cut down on that sweaty gym smell in your tent!

Our campsite is along a creek and it’s the only chance some Scouts have to go near a creek, or to even play in a creek. A Scout must bring closed toed water shoes if he even thinks he’ll venture into the creek. No closed toed water shoes – no creek. These water shoes can be water shoes, athletic shoes, Crocs or other closed toed shoes that can get wet and soaked; they can not be the shoes a Scout plans to wear during camp or his backup shoes.

Personal snacks. Scouts may bring a small personal cooler or sealable container with personal snacks, however, please leave those sugar filled snacks at home. Remember, NO food in tents! Remember to label you cooler or container. If you choose not to bring any snacks, don’t plan to borrow snacks from other Scouts!

Scout uniform. Scouts will be wearing their Class A uniform to dinner meals and to campfires. A Class A uniform is the Scout shirt, pants/shorts and socks. Scouts will wear Class B (Scout t-shirt) during the day and at other times. We suggest bring two Class A uniform shirts if you have them and a hanger to hang your uniform shirt on during the day. A second Class A shirt is not a requirement, but will be nice to have if your Class A shirt is sweaty and stinky by the end of the week. We also wear our Class A uniform to dinner. If you are in the OA, don’t forget your sash for Tuesday night’s Brotherhood Ceremony and Wednesday’s campfire.

Troop 919 Scouts will be receiving a Troop t-shirt and a Camp Raven Knob t-shirt while at camp. The Trading Post usually has Class B shirts for sale at a reasonable price if you want/need additional shirts. Most Scouts try to have about seven Scout related t-shirts with them at camp.

Merit Badge Classes. All Scouts will be taking Merit Badge classes at camp and should purchase the merit badge pamphlet for their session at the Wachovia Scouting Service Center on Silas Creek Parkway prior to camp. The Trading Post may have a limited supply of merit badge pamphlets.

Scouts taking Trail to Eagle classes must download and print their Trail to Eagle workbook from the Camp Raven Knob website and bring it with them to camp. These workbooks are necessary for the class and typically not available at camp. Here is the link on the camp website to download your Trail to Eagle workbook.

Scouts will also need to bring the needed supplies for their merit badge classes, such as paper and pencil, masking tape, etc. Check the requirements for your session and plan accordingly.

Scouts taking other merit badge classes are also responsible to taking any necessary equipment (tent, backpack, fishing pole, etc.) with them to camp. Scouts taking camping merit badge may use a Troop tent; it is their responsibility to ask to use and load this equipment into the trailer the morning of departure and return it to its storage location when we return.

You should also review the summer camp guide and complete any merit badge requirements prior to camp that should be completed prior to camp.

How much money should I take with me to camp? This is a personal decision; remember you are responsible for keeping up with and managing your own money. Most Scouts bring between $5 and $10 per day with them to camp. This should be plenty to pay for any handicraft purchases, snacks and other purchases you want to make at the Trading Post. If you need to pay any merit badge session fees, don’t forget the money for that as well. You can always hit your family banker up for some additional funds on Wednesday night if you haven’t budgeted very well.

Contact with Scouts at Camp. If you need to reach your Scout in an emergency situation while we are at camp, the best bet is to call the Camp Raven Knob administrative office at (336) 352-4307.

Scouts love mail from home while at camp. Scouts may receive snail mail and e-mail at camp. Address your letters to:

E-mail can be sent to Scouts through a form on the camp’s website. E-mail messages will be printed and delivered to the Troop each day at lunch. A word to the wise: others will be able to view anything you put in an e-mail, so don’t get too personal!

There is a pay phone at the admin building and some Scouts will want to call home at some point during the week. Don’t expect your Scout to call home every day. He’s going to be busy and the phone is a good distance from our campsite! Many Scouts call home prior to Wednesday to request additional clothes, socks, etc. or to make sure their favorite food item will be arriving on Wednesday. Many Scouts bring a phone card or call home collect. Cell phones are not permitted in camp, except for adult leadership. Many Scouts have a personal cell phone…leave those at home.

Lock for your foot locker. All Scouts must have a foot locker and a lock. The lock can be a key lock or a combination lock. All Scouts are required to place an extra key or the combination in a Ziploc bag and give it to the Scoutmaster before leaving for camp. If you still need a locker, check at Space Savers on Stratford Road. or Wal-Mart. Make sure your name is on the outside of your locker. The foot locker must be of the size to fit under your bunk.

Put your name on everything! Put your name on all clothing and equipment. It’s amazing how everything starts to look alike after a couple of days.

Prescription medications. If a Scout will be taking prescription medicine while at camp, he is required to bring his medication in the original container inside a Ziploc bag with his name on it and detailed dosage instructions printed on an index card and included in the bag. All prescription medications will be kept locked in container for safe keeping and will be dispensed before and after meals. Medications requiring refrigeration will be stored in the health lodge and will be dispensed by the medical staff before and after meals. Some medications will be dispensed ONLY at the health lodge.

Camp Departure. We will meet at the Scout hut at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 13 in Class A uniform and plan to depart for camp at 10:30 a.m. We will make our traditional stop in Mt. Airy (usually at the Golden Corral ) for lunch so we can be at CRK for the 12:30 p.m. check in. Each Scout should bring about $10 for lunch (above his budget for camp).

Returning from camp. We should be leaving camp by 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 15, which will put us back at the Scout Hut around 11:00 – 11:30 a.m. We’ll have just a bit of Troop equipment to unload and stow away before heading home.

Wednesday Night Pot-Luck Picnic and Campfire

The Wednesday Night Family Pot-Luck Picnic and Campfire is July 22. We’ve talked about this one in Troop meetings, in e-mails and in our introductory meeting the Raven Scout parents.

Our Wednesday night family picnic and campfire is important for many reasons. We welcome the delicious home-cooked food you bring us. We’re happy to see our families and friends and we like to show off our camp and the Scouts like to show moms, dads, brothers, sisters and friends what they’ve been doing at camp. We will have a large crowd in our campsite and will probably begin to eat around 5:30 p.m.

Families should bring their Scouts’ favorite food and drink. Bring enough to feed your family and then some. We usually have a few camp visitors with us on Wednesday night!

We camp at the Apache campsite. To find us, continue past the administration building and follow the road down the hill. At the log cabin, turn left and continue on Valley Road. The Trading Post will be on your right and Lake Sabota and the aquatics area will be on your left; the OA Arena is next on your right. Continue on this road past the nature lodge and our campsite will be on the left. We’re about a half mile from the Trading Post, give or take a few hundred steps!

The best suggestion is to arrive early, drive to our campsite and drop off your food and stuff and then park your vehicle near the administration building or trading post.

The Wednesday night campfire is a special time during of week of camp and all friends and families are invited to attend the campfire with the Troop. The campfire is led by members of the Order of the Arrow, which is Scouting’s camping Honor Society. Some of our Troop 919 Scouts were selected by their fellow Scouts to be “tapped” into the OA; the names of these Scouts will be revealed by the Order of the Arrow at the Wednesday night campfire.

We’re at camp during the 5th week when the OA honors members with the prestigious Vigil Honor. This OA ceremony is very meaningful to Scouts and Scouters alike and many Scouts and Scouters return to Camp Raven Knob each year for this special night. We hope you will include the Vigil honor ceremony in your plans for Wednesday night.

The Wednesday night campfire will be held in the OA Arena

The most important reason to attend on Wednesday evening, however, is that Scouts looks forward to your visit. You can only imagine the disappointment a Scout feels if he is the only Scout who doesn’t have somebody to share the evening with. If your Scout is not going to have any visitors on Wednesday night, please discuss this with me privately prior to camp. You can e-mail me or call my cell phone (829-0158) prior to our Troop leaving for camp.

With better than 200 people enjoying dinner in our campsite it takes a while for everyone to be served and the area cleaned up prior to the campfire. We’ll plan to eat at 5:30 p.m. If you can leave Winston-Salem early, please do so. It takes about an hour to drive to camp from Winston-Salem.

What should you bring? Your Scout’s favorite food and drink. This will be the one night he’s sure to get his favorite food and drink this week, so make it memorable. Plan to bring enough food to feed your family times two. With this rule-of-thumb we always have enough food and everyone gets to try something different! Don’t plan to leave any remaining food in camp; we don’t have any place to store food and don’t want to attract any animals.

Please feel free to bring a lawn chair and wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes. Don’t forget your rain gear. There is a rumor that Camp Raven Knob sometimes gets afternoon rain showers.

Homesick Scouts. It unusual for a Scout to be homesick while at Raven Knob, but it does happen, especially for first time campers. This may be first time some of our Scouts have been away from home for an extended period of time or the first time he’s slept outdoors for a week and some (very few) Scouts get homesick while at camp. The staff at Camp Raven Knob is super at consoling homesick Scouts and usually after talking with a staff member, a once homesick Scout has forgotten all about home and back into action.

If a Scout is going to get homesick, it’s when he sees his family on Wednesday night. It has been our experience that if a Scout leaves with his family on Wednesday night or has his parents pick him up before the week is finished, his Scouting career is short lived. There have been a few cases when a parent has had to walk away from a tearful Scout, which is tougher on the parent than the Scout.

If your Scout seems a bit homesick when you see him on Wednesday night and you insist that he stay in camp, he’ll be a stronger young man and will be standing taller when he arrives home. He will have lived that true mountaintop experience.

I don’t expect homesickness to be a problem for any of our Scouts, but ask that families be prepared for the possibility and have made a plan that your Scout stays in camp. Please call me if you believe we should discuss this potential.

Brady A's Eagle Project - Thanks to all of the Scouts and adults who came out yesterday to help Brady with his Eagle Project. We'll be hering more from Brady later on his project and future plans for the nature trail area at Hospice in Winston-Salem.

Your Project? - If you are a Life Scout, having you been considering your progress towards the rank of Eagle Scout? Have you been making plans for your Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project?

Final Summer Meeting - Tuesday's Troop meeting will be our last meeting before we take a break for the summer. After Tuesday, the next time we will be together is when we depart for summer camp on Sunday, July 19.

Adult Leader Trainng - All Troop 919 Adult Leaders are reminded to check the status of their BSA Youth Protection training. The BSA recommends that you take the Youth Protection training at least every two years.

If you are an adult leader who will be attending summer camp with the Troop, please take a few minutes to complete the online Youth Protection training before we depart for summer camp.

The online training can be accessed through the BSA's Online Learning Center.

When you complete the training, be sure to print the certificate and bring it to Tuesday's meeting so we can update our Troop records. Thanks in advance for taking the time to complete this important task.

Summer Camp Swim Checks

We are going to give swim checks another try!

The afternoon thunder storms last week prevented us from completing our summer camp swim checks, not once, but twice.

Maybe the third time will be a charm!

Our summer camp swim checks have been rescheduled for Tuesday (June 16) at 7:30 p.m. at the Fulton Family YMCA on Hanes Mill Road.

Summer Camp Update

Camp Raven Knob is being pro-active and has established several precautionary health and safety procedures in advance our arrival at summer camp in a effort to prevent an outbreak of the Swine Flu at camp this summer.

On the Sunday that you are departing for camp, please have your temperature checked. If you are running a fever of 99.5 or higher please do not come to Raven Knob. Also, if you have other signs of the flu, such as unusual fatigue, ongoing body aches and general weakness, CRK encourages you to remain at home and to seek medical attention. Again any fees that have been paid will be refunded.
Upon arrival at camp, everyone will go through a medical recheck. This includes Scouts, Leaders and Staff. Any individual found to have a fever will be isolated. Scouts, Leaders or Staff who are suspected of possibly having the H1N1 (Swine Flu) virus will be quarantined in the Camp’s Infirmary until arrangements can be made for the individual to return home.

As part of our efforts to help ensure everyone at Troop 919 has a great camp experience, we will be conducting our own medical re-check at the Scout Hut on the day of departure.

Swim Checks Rescheduled

The storms last night prevented us from being able to conduct our summer camp swim checks at the Fulton Family YMCA. The swim checks have been rescheduled for toningt (Wednesday, June 10) at 7:30 p.m. at the Fulton Family YMCA on Hanes Mill Road.

We realize that Wednesday evening is a church evening for many families and you may not be able to make it tonight. Most of the Scouts in attendance last night said they would be able to attend tonight. If a significant number of people are not able to particiapte tonight, we will look at scheduling a make-up session before we leave for summer camp.

Our Scout Fun Day is this Saturday (June 13). We will be heading to Emerald Pointe in Greensboro.

Scouts and families will be meeting at the Scout Hut at 9 a.m. on Saturday and plan to leave Emerald Pointe around 4:30 p.m.

Swim Check Reminder - A reminder that we will be holding Troop our summer camp swim checks at the Fulton Family YMCA on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The fee for swim checks is $3. Please bring the correct change. If you are a member of the Fulton Y, bring your membership card and the fee will be waived.

All Scouts must complete a swim check each year. If you are unable to complete a swim check on Tuesday, an opportunity will be provided for swim checks the afternoon we arrive at Camp Raven Knob.

Medical Form Check - When you arrive at the Fulton YMCA on Tuesday, please ask your parent to come inside with you to review your medical form.

Troop Fun Day - Our Troop Fun Day will be on Saturday at Emerald Pointe in Greensboro. The Troop Committee is paying the park admission for all Scouts, so if you have signed up for this event, please do not cancel out at the last minute.

Eagle Project Workday - Brady A. has schedule a workday for his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project on Saturday, June 20, beginning at 9 a.m. at Hospice. Lunch and snacks will be provided. We will be helping Brady work on the nature trail at Hospice. Hospice is located at 101 Hospice Lane in Winston-Salem.

Court of Honor - A reminder that we will be holding our Troop Court of Honor on Tuesday in the Fellowship Hall at Brookstown United Methodist Church. The Court of Honor begins at 7:30 p.m.

Be sure to invite your family to help celebrate your Scouting achievements at our Court of Honor!

Scouts and families are reminded to bring plenty of snacks and drinks for the fellowship following the Court of Honor.

Medical Forms - Please plan to see Mr. Warner at Tuesday's Court of Honor to review your medical form for summer camp.

Troop Fun Day - Our annual Troop Fun Day is scheduled for Saturday, June 13 at Emerald Pointe. We will have a sign-up sheet at Tuesday's Court of Honor. If you are not going to be attending the COH and want to attend the Fun Day, call your Patrol Leader or another Scout in your Patrol to sign you up.

We will be purchasing tickets for each Scout who is attending and since the Troop will be paying your admission, you are making a commitment. If you are not sure that you will attend, please do not sign up. You will be responsible for your own for lunch and refreshments, so bring an appropriate amount of cash with you! Remember, it's a theme park so prices will be different.

Families are also invited to join us on this trip. Mr. Essex will be coordinating this trip, so if your family wants to go along, please plan to sign-up at Tuesday's Court of Honor and pay the $24 per person fee. All admissions must be paid in advance at Tuesday's Court of Honor.

COPE COURSE/Backpacking Trip - We will be meeting at the Scout Hut at 6 p.m. on Friday for this weekend's combination COPE Course/Backpacking Intro trip. You should eat dinner before arriving at the Scout Hut.

Medical Forms - We need your help!

There are a total of 43 Scouts and adult leaders who will be going to Raven Knob with our Troop for Summer Camp.

We only have current medical forms for 8 people. That means we do not have a current medical form for most of you! And for most, it also means you need a visit to the doctor!

The deadline for having your summer camp medical form to the Troop is at next week's Court of Honor. We have been asking for your help on this subject throughout the spring and, so far, are not having any success. Mr. Warner will be coordinating our medical forms for summer camp, so please see him at Tuesday's meeting to take care of this important task.

Scouts will not be allowed to leave with us for summer camp if we do not have a current medical form.

Court of Honor - Our June Court of Honor will be on Tuesday, June 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Brookstown United methodist Church. Be sure to invite your family and friends to this meeting to help celebrate your accomplishmnets.

May Camping Trip - The final signup for our May camping trip is at Tuesday's Troop meeting.

The is a combination trip over the weekend of May 29-31, with separate programs for older and newer Scouts.

Scouts 13 and older will be taking on the Raven Knob COPE Course. COPE, which stands for "Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience" will begin on Friday night and continue on Saturday with the final session taking place on Sunday morning. Keith Roberts, the director of the Raven Knob COPE Course will be at Tuesday's meeting to discuss the COPE program. If you are signed up for this portion of the trip, please make every effort to attend Tuesday's meeting.

Our newer and younger Scouts will be participating in an introductory backpacking trip as we head out to the Raven Knob backcountry after spending Friday night in a CRK Adirondack.

There will be a backpack shakedown at the menu planning meeting on Tuesday, May 26. You should bring your backpack fully packed (minus food and water) to this meeting for a shakedown (inspection) and plan to leave your backpack at the Scout hut.

If you are on the backpacking trip, you should pack a separate bag for Friday night if you wish.

PLC Meeting - The Troop Patrol Leader's Council meets at 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Scout Hut.

If you are anticipating earning a rank badge at the June Court of Honor, you should ask for a Board of Review on Thursday. Scouts should arrive at their Board of Review in Class A uniform and should have completed their Scoutmaster conference prior to the BOR.

Computer Records - Please remember to bring your Scout Handbook to our weekly meetings so Mr. Pierson can make sure your computer records are up-to-date.

Troop Committee Meeting - The Troop committee will meet on Thursday following the PLC (usually around 7 p.m.) at the Scout Hut.

If you have recently joined our Troop Committee, the group usually meets at the Scout Hut following the monthly Patrol Leaders Conference.

Summer Camp Merit Badges - Your final summer camp merit badge selections are due by Tuesday's Troop meeting.

You should have received an e-mail over the weekend that included you summer camp fee balance and other important information. If you have already submitted your merit badge choices, they were included in the e-mail. Please verify that this important information is correct.

Relay for Life - Our Troop will is continuing its tradition of offering Scouts the opportunity to participate in the Relay for Life. This year's walk is on Friday (May 15). Scouts and families participating in the walk should meet at the Methodist Children's Home on Reynolda Road at 7 p.m. on Friday.

As we have done in the past, we will be walking with our Tropp Committee Chairman, Jim Pierson. Mr. Pierson is a cancer survivor and is always appreciative of the Scouts and their families who come out to support him and the Relay for Life.

If you are collecting service hours for rank advancement, you will receive credit for the time spent at the Relay for Life on Friday evening.

Mr. Zimmermann is coordinating our Troop's participation in the walk on Friday.

Cub Scout Flag Ceremony - Andrew T. is seeking the help of a few Scouts to assist him with a flag ceremony with Pack 919 Cub Scouts on Tuesday. If you can help out, please let Andrew know in advance and plan to be at the Scout Hut by 7 p.m. The Cub Scout flag ceremony will be at our Scout Hut.

OA Spring Fellowship - Wahissa Lodge #118's Spring Fellowship is this weekend at Camp Raven Knob. You may check in on Friday evening in the dining hall beginning at 7 p.m.

Spring Fellowship is an important event in the lodge's calendar as Arrowmen gather in cheerful service to help get camp ready for the summer camp season.

Setting up tents. moving pallets and putting bunks and mattresses into the tents can be fun! Plus the lodge's Vice-Chief of activities promises the weekend will not be all work. Sounds like he has plans for a lot of fun stuff after the work has been completed on Saturday afternoon.

OA Brotherhood Help Session - Elauwit Chapter (our OA chapter) will be offering a Brotherhood help session for youth and adult Ordeal members who are planning to earn their Brotherhood membership at summer camp this year.

The help session is planned for Thursday, May 14 during the chapter meeting at 7 p.m. at Maple Springs Methodist Church on Reynolda Road.

Work will begin at 9 a.m. at Maple Springs Methodist Church on Reynolda Road. and Wes will be providing lunch (take out from El Maguey).

Scouts bring work gloves, shovels, hammers, screwdriver and a wheelbarrow (if you have one).

Let's make sure we have a good response from Troop 919 to help Wes accomplish his goal of renovating the outdoor worship center and moving one step closer to the rank of Eagle Scout.

May Camping Trip – Our May camping trip will be a combination trip. This is a Friday-Saturday-Sunday trip. We will depart on Friday afternoon, May 39 and return Sunday afternoon, May 31.

If you are 13 years or older, you have a change to participate in the COPE Course at Raven Knob! The COPE Course is a great team building programming and incorporates the Boy Scouts’ version of a high ropes course.

We will also be offering an introductory backpacking trip for those not participating in the COPE Course.

Sign-Ups for the May trip will be at Tuesday’s Troop meeting.

It’s a huge privilege for our Troop to be afforded the opportunity to participate in COPE and if you haven’t been with us camping in a while, dust off your camping shoes and take advantage of Raven Knob’s COPE program.

Bike Trip Campout – We enjoyed the beautiful weather of the weekend for our bike ride on the Virginia Creeper Trail.

The Scouts who went on this trip enjoyed two sunny days of biking in scenic Southwestern Virginia….and we got to see a part of the country that we don’t normally see!

If you were on this trip and haven’t paid for your portion of the patrol food, please plan to pay at Tuesday’s Troop meeting or make arrangements to get your money to the Scout Hut if you aren’t going to be at the meeting.

Thanks to the adults leaders who helped on this trip: Jeremy Edwards, Bill Swart, Bill Brewer, Tim Lasley, Mike Warner, Mac McCormick and Jay Harmel.

Tents – If you were on this weekend’s trip, plan to arrive at Tuesday’s meeting about 20 minutes early to pack up your tent and patrol gear.

Summer Camp Meeting – Tuesday’s meeting will focus on summer camp. We will be talking about life at summer camp and will be selecting our Merit Badge sessions. Please review the summer camp packet on the Troop website before Tuesday’s meeting and bring your merit badge selections to the meeting. You should also bring a copy of the last page of this packet to Tuesday’s meeting, complete with Merit Badge choices and emergency contact information completed. Thanks to the Scouts who have already completed this important task.

If you need help with your Merit Badge selections, your Scoutmasters will be glad to help you plan your camp experience.

Remember: If you are not taking the Raven Scout program, you will be expected to take at least one Eagle Required Merit Badge session.

Medical Forms - The Boy Scouts have replaced the Class 1, 2 and 3 medical forms with a new Annual Health and Medical Form. The youth form is no longer valid for three years. All Scouts and Scouters will now use the same form and everyone must have an annual doctor’s check-up and complete a new medial form annually. The new form also includes a liability and talent release, so be sure to review and print all 4 pages and sign where indicated.

Also, you will no longer be able to attach a sports or school physical to the BSA form as many have done in the past. The new Annual Health and Medical form must be signed by your doctor annually.

The new Annual Health and Medical Form can be downloaded here. This forms prints on regular letter paper.

Summer Camp Payment - Your second summer camp payment is now due. We will be deducting the Scout dollars you earned selling popcorn from this payment, so if you don’t know your Scout Account balance, see Mr. Hough or Mr. Wilhelmi at Tuesday’s meeting.

Bike Trip - This weekend's camping trip will be a two-day excursion on the Virginia Creeper Trail.

Remember: You must have a bicycle with changeable gears and brakes that you control (no coaster brakes) on the handlebars and you must take your bike by Paceline for a complimentary safety inspection before the trip. Each rider must also carry a spare tube that fits your wheels along with a repair kit with tube patch and the tools necessary to change a tire on YOUR bike.

You will also need to bring along a trail lunch, water and energy snacks that you can carry with you on the trail.

We will be meeting at the Scout Hut at 8 a.m. on Saturday to load bikes and gear for the trip.

Menu planning for this trip will be at Tuesday’s meeting. Anyone planning to go on this trip should be present at the menu planning meeting. Final sign-up for the trip will be at Tuesday’s Troop meeting.

You will need to print a copy of the registration page and bring a completed copy (that means all of the info filled in ) to a Scout Meeting by May 1 so we can finalize our registration with Camp Raven Knob.

The base fee for summer camp this year is $215 and some sessions have an additional program fee. Remember to include this fee (if any) in your final calculations. The fee can be found on the page that lists all of the sessions (the next to last page in the packet) and in the description of the merit badge.

If you would like some help in selecting your Merit Badge sessions, be sure to ask one of your assistant Scoutmasters for guidance at our next meeting. Be sure to bring a copy of your packet!

All Scouts except our newest Raven Scouts will be required to take at least one Eagle required Merit Badge at summer camp. And remember to include a free session in your plan. Many Scouts use the last period of the day as their free session, which is also the time when the Aquatics area is open for free swim.

If you are a Raven Scout, you should plan on taking the Senior Raven program in the afternoon.

Your second summer camp payment is due by May 12. If you sold popcorn for the Troop last fall and earned Scout Dollars, they will be deducted from the second payment.

Final summer camp payment is due at the Court of Honor on June 2.

Summer Camp Registration

The 2009 Summer Camp Registration can now be downloaded from the Troop website. There are two links on the site where this information can be downloaded from:

You should print a copy of this registration packet (or review it online) and begin to make your Merit Badge selections.

The last page is the registration form and you should complete this form in it entirety and bring to your next Troop meeting. Be sure to include your name, e-mail address, cell phone and emergency contact information.

If you would like some help in selecting your Merit Badge sessions, be sure to ask one of your assistant Scoutmasters for guidance at our next meeting. Be sure to bring a copy of your packet!

The Boy Scouts have replaced the Class 1, 2 and 3 medical forms with a new Annual Health and Medical Form. The youth form is no longer valid for three years. The new form also includes a liability and talent release, so be sure to review and print all 4 pages and sign where indicated.

Troop Merit Badge College – Thanks to the Scouts and leaders who made Saturday's Troop Merit Badge College a huge success. Merit Badges offered included Cooking, Bicycling, Citizenship in the Community and Family Life. A special thank you to Scott Gryder for organizing the Merit Badge College and instructors Michael Hough, Richard DeHeck and Jeremy Edwards for your instruction.

PLC Meeting – The Troop Patrol Leaders Council will meet at 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Scout Hut. This will be the first PLC since reorganizing our Patrols. All Troop leadership positions and Patrol Leaders should attend the PLC meeting.

Board of Review – The Troop Committee will be available to conduct a Board of Review for any Scout needing a BOR for rank advancement at 6 p.m. thursday at the Scout Hut.

Bike Trip – Our bike trip camping trip will be April 25-26. We will riding on the Virginia Creeper Trail. To participate on this trip you use a bicycle with gears (no BMX bikes or cruisers) and brakes on the handlebars (no coaster brakes), a repair kit with spare tube and tools that fit your bike. Riders will also be required to take their bike by Paceline Bikes on Country Club Road for a safety inspection before the ride.

Calendar Changes – We will be making a few calendar changes this spring. The Spring Court of Honor, scheduled for April, is rescheduled to June 2. The calendar changes include:

June 2 – Court of Honor

June 9 – Summer camp swim checks

Merit Badge College – The Piedmont District Advancement Camporee scheduled for the weekend of May 8-10 will include a Merit Badge College. The following Merit Badges will be offered at the PDAC Merit Badge College on Saturday, May 9.

American cultures, Archery, Camping, Canoeing, Citizenship in the Community, Citizenship in the Nation, Citizenship in the World, Fingerprinting, Fire Safety, First Aid, Fishing, Horsemanship, Law, Orienteering, Rifle Shooting, Salesmanship and Traffic Safety

In order to participate in the Merit Badge College we will have to pre-register for this event. The cost is $8 per participant and must be paid in advance. You will be able to register and pay at the next two Troop meetings. We have to submit our registration and payment to Old Hickory Council by April 24.

The camporee will be held at Merriwood Christian Camp in Clemmons. We will not be traveling to the camporee as a Troop. Each Scout family will be responsible for their own transportation.

Lunch will not be provided as part of the registration fee. Each Scout should bring a bag lunch and a water bottle.

Need A Volunteer – We are looking for some help in cutting the grass at the Scout Hut this Spring. If you think you could help this chore at the Scout Hut this spring and summer, please contact Jay Harmel. Thanks again for volunteering!

Summer Camp – If you are planning to attend summer with this Troop this year, we need you to register soon. We need to submit our final registration to Camp Raven Knob by May 1, including Merit Badge selections.

For his Eagle Scout project, Wes will be renovating the Outdoor Worship Center behind Maple Springs church.

Scouts bring work gloves, shovels, hammers, screwdriver and a wheelbarrow (if you have one).

Philmont 2010 – Our Troop is getting ready for its 2010 Philmont Trek. Tim Lasley will be the adult adviser on this trek and if you are interested in participating in this Scouting Mountaintop experience, you should 1) talk with Mr. Lasley immediately, 2) be prepared to commit to the crew and all of its activities and 3) be prepared to make the immediate financial commitment to reserve your slot.

OA Conclave – If you still want to attend the OA Section Conclave (April 17-19) at Camp Tuscarora and have not signed up, it’s not too late (but it’s getting close). You can go by the Scout Office and complete the registration form and pay the $40 by Tuesday. Tuesday is the FINAL registration deadline and walk-up registrations will not be accepted at the year’s Conclave.

Bicycling Camping Trip – We will be signing up for our April bicycling camping trip at Tuesday’s Troop meeting.

No Troop Meeting This Week

Troop 919 will not be holding a weekly meeting this week. Enjoy your spring vacation and break from school.

We will resume our weekly Troop meetings on April 7 as we begin to prepare for our Virginia Creeper Trail bicycling camping trip.

Troop Merit Badge College – A reminder that we will be hosting a Troop Merit Badge College on Saturday, April 11. Sign-ups will be held at the April 7 Troop meeting.

We will try to get a message out later this week with the final Merit Badges being offered.

OA One Day of Service – A reminder to our Troop’s OA members that Elauwit Chapter is holding a One Day of Service on Saturday (April 4). The Chapter will be working on the Mountain to Sea Trail near Boone. You should have received a postcard announcing this project.

The plans are to meet at the Scout Office on Silas Creek Parkway at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday for the drive to the worksite. We will be returning around 6:00 or 7:00 p.m. that evening.

If you can participate in this project, please give Andrew T. a call. He will be coordinating our group with the Friends of the Mountain to Sea Trail and has to provide a count in advance.

Let’s all work to have a great showing from Troop 919 at this year’s Conclave, support the guys from our Troop who will be competing in the Indian Affairs events and have some FUN in eastern North Carolina.

Wilderness Survival Weekend - Our Troop enjoyed a beautiful weekend at Camp Raven Knob for its Wilderness Survival weekend. Congratulations to the Scouts who built some very nice shelters.

Also thanks to the adult leaders on the trip: Jay Harmel, Bill Swart, tim Lasley, Brian Wham, Jeremy Edwards, Richard DeHeck, Mike Warner and David Jacobius.

Troop Elections - We will be holding our Troop Elections at Tuesday's meeting. We will be electing Troop Leadership as well as Patrol positions.

If you are considering running for Senior Patrol Leader or other Troop Leadership positions, you have just a few hours remaining for a Scoutmaster Conference. No Troop Election Scoutmaster Conferences will be held at Tuesday's meeting.

Summer Camp Registration – Several Scouts have signed up for summer camp and paid their initial registration fee. We are still waiting to hear from many of you who have said you plan to attend summer camp, but have not yet registered.

To be eligible for the OA, you must be a First Class Scout (or higher rank) and have completed 15 nights of camping in the past two years, one of which is a long term camp, like summer camp or a Philmont Trek.

Spring Online Popcorn Sale Reminder – Want to earn a few extra kernel$ to help pay for summer camp? From now through May 15, Scouts who conduct online popcorn sales can earn money to help pay for camp, be eligible for Trails End scholarship dollars and earn a Coleman gift card when you sell at least $200

Any Scout who sells at least $500 in popcorn sales online between March 15 and May 15 will automatically be enrolled in the Trails End College Scholarship program, which means 6% of your total sales are invested in your own scholarship account. The usual minimum is $2500, so don’t miss this great opportunity to get into the Trails End Scholarship program.

You will need you order key number to get credit for the online sales. If you can’t remember your number or can’t find it from last year’s sale, you can call Trails End at 1-800-782-4255 or email them at support@orderpopcorn.com.

Selling popcorn online can be as simple as sending an e-mail to your family and friends with the online popcorn sales link and your unique order key number (very important).

Wilderness Survival Campout - The following Scouts and Leaders have signed up for our wilderness Survival camping trip to Raven Knob on March 20-22.

For this trip will be meeting at the Scout Hut at 5 p.m. on Friday to load our gear and head to Raven Knob. We will spend Friday night in the Adirondacks in the Kit Carson campsite on Friday and will build our shelters on the ridge for Saturday night. We should be returning home around 12:30 on Sunday.

Philmont - Mr. Lasley is ready to begin taking applications for our 2010 Philmont Trek. If you think you want to go to Philmont (it really is the trip of a lifetime!), see Mr. Lasley at Tuesday's Troop meeting.

To be eligible for the Philmont trek, you must be a First Class Scout and be age 14 before September 1, 2010, and have your Scoutmaster's approval.
