Stitch Instructions
Spike Stitch

Put your hook through the top of the previous single crochet.
Pick up the yarn from the back side, pull it through.
Wrap the yarn over, pull through one loop.
Wrap the yarn over and pull through both loops.

Puff Stitch:

Wrap the yarn over your hook, insert the hook through the stitch or space. Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull through. There will be 3 loops on the hook.
Wrap the yarn over your hook. Insert the hook through the same stitch or space. Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull through. There will be 5 loops on the hook.
Wrap the yarn over your hook. Insert the hook through the same stitch or space. Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull through. There will be 7 loops on the hook.
Wrap the yarn over your hook. Insert the hook through the same stitch or space. Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull through. There will be 9 loops on the hook.
Wrap the yarn over your hook and pull the yarn through all 9 loops to complete the puff stitch.
Chain to secure.

You can choose if you would like to change colors or work the pattern all in one color.

Chain 18

Row 1: Work 1 SC in each single crochet across for a total of 17. Cut the yarn to change color.
Row 2: Attach the new color with a slip stitch to the single crochet. Chain 3, skip a stitch, *work a puff stitch across, skip a stitch, continue across from * for the width. End with a double crochet in the last stitch on the edge. Cut the yarn to change color.

Row 3: Attach the new color with a slip stitch to the double crochet. Chain 1, work a single crochet in the top of the same stitch. Single crochet between the stitches. Work a single crochet in the top of the next puff stitch. Single Crochet between the stitches. Continue across for the length of your project.

Repeat Row 2 and Row 3 for the length.

The Single Crochet Spike will replace the row of single crochet.
Single Crochet Spike
Row 3: Attach the new color with a slip stitch to the double crochet. Chain 1, work a single crochet in the top of the same stitch. Work a single crochet spike stitch between the stitches down through the previous row of single crochet. (see stitch instructions above for details) Work a single crochet in the top of the next puff stitch. Work a single crochet spike stitch between the stitches down through the previous row of single crochet. Continue across for the length of your project. End with a single crochet in the last stitch.

What is the Right Side of a Crochet Piece?

From time to time you may come across crochet instructions telling you to have the "right side of the work facing you." Right side means, the side facing out after your project is finished.

If you like the look of the back of the stitches, that can be your right side.
When you work the afghan stitch, you will have two distinct looks. Either side of the work can be used as your right side.
The front side for a hat made in rounds, will be the side facing you as your are making the hat. Maybe you like the look of the inside better so that can be your right side.
If you are familiar with doily's, the part facing you as you are making the doily will be your right side.
Think about a store bough T-shirt. The wrong side is the inside with all of the seams holding the shirt together. The right side is the external part that looks nice and neat.

When working in rows you will always alternate sides so both sides could be considered the right side or the front side. When working in rounds, some people like to turn so the stitches are alternating in both directions. If you do not turn with rounds, you may have a distinct front side that will look a little different than the back. Right side is open for interpretation. Front side does not always mean right side.

Thank you to Sue, from Sue's Crochet and Knitting for permission to use her pattern in this video. The video is made with the glove for women. The male version, is a larger version for the same style.

This pattern can easily be modified to make the glove with 2 or 3 ply yarn. Start the pattern with the cuff. The cuff will have more rounds so you will start off with more stitches creating the palm and thumb increase section. Everything throughout the pattern will be the same other than working more rounds and more stitches in each round.

Round 2: CH 2, SL ST in the top of the next Stitch. When you get around to the chains on the opposite end, you will work a slip stitch in the chain, CH 2, slip stitch in the slip stitch, CH 2 slip stitch in the chain. Continue around with the Chain 2, slip stitch in the top of each stitch. Secure yarn, cut off the tail.

Sew the leaf close to the stem or where you want to place the leaf. Make as many as you want to make in a variety of colors.

Current Crochet Project and Fall Memories

I am finishing up a thread doily, just because I love working with thread. What is everyone working on now? Are you getting started with holiday projects? Maybe you have finished already. Here in the USA, we have Fall upon us along with Halloween at the end of the month. I know Germany is in the middle of Oktoberfest. Please share favorite family traditions or celebrations that are happening this time of the year in your country .

One of my favorite memories is from when I was a kid. My parents would take us to the local apple orchard in the fall. We would get some pumpkins, apples, gourds and apple cider. It always smelled so good there. Once we got everything home, over the next few days my mom would be busy making caramel apples and homemade apple pies.

Definitions

Long First Loop - This is pulling the loop already on the hook, up about the height of a double crochet. I have found this technique blends the loops with the puff stitch, where a chain 3 will be visible.

Puff Stitch:

Wrap the yarn over your hook, insert the hook through the stitch or space. Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull through. There will be 3 loops on the hook.
Wrap the yarn over your hook. Insert the hook through the same stitch or space. Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull through. There will be 5 loops on the hook.
Wrap the yarn over your hook. Insert the hook through the same stitch or space. Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull through. There will be 7 loops on the hook.
Wrap the yarn over your hook. Insert the hook through the same stitch or space. Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull through. There will be 9 loops on the hook.
Wrap the yarn over your hook and pull the yarn through all 9 loops to complete the puff stitch.
Chain to secure.

The multiple for this stitch is 2. This means you will work an additional 2 chains for each extra puff stitch that you want to add to make your scarf wider. Subtract 2 chains to make it narrower.

Scarf Width: 7 inches/18 CM

You can also replace the chain with 17 foundation single crochet.

Row 1: Make a long first loop(see definition above). Work the Puff Stitch in the first chain from the hook. *Skip a chain, work a Puff Stitch in the next chain. Continue across from * for a total of 9 Puff Stitches.

Note: There is not a chain 1 worked between each puff stitch. I found that made the row to wide.

Row 2: Make a long first loop(see definition above). Work the Puff Stitch in the top of the previous puff stitch. The hook will be worked through the top loop that joined the loops of the puff stitch on the previous row. Work a puff stitch in each stitch across for a total of 9 Puff Stitches.

Row 3-?: Repeat row two for the remainder of the length of the scarf.

This project can easily be adjusted in width to make an afghan.
