Saying Good-bye!

If you have not heard the official news, Sara Harley , former owner of the Barking Biscuit is moving to Nova Scotia.

In February Sara sold the Barking Biscuit to Ruth Comeau, an experienced entrepreneur...she has run The Valley Spice Company for the past 10 years and now has started this new adventure and is looking forward to supplying Barking Biscuits to all their fans. Same great recipes and biscuits...no changes there.

The PAWS for Charity team is very sad to see Sara leave, as a friend,fellow entrepreneur and business woman, we have all benefited from our great friendship with Sara. Although we are sad to see Sara go, we wish her only the absolute best for her and her family.

At this time, with the huge transition, the Barking Biscuit new owners have decided to not continue with PAWS for Charity at this time. We wish Ruth all the best with her new venture.

Julie Kelly of Chillydogs.ca, Char Harding of Aroundthehounds.com and Photographer Suzanne Bird will be deciding how to move forward with this wonderful fundraising partnership.

In less than two years the group raised close to four thousand dollars for breast cancer research for the Canadian Cancer Society.

There is no question that Sara was the driving force behind PAWS for Charity and we hope we can make as big a difference as she did in the future. We wish Sara and John all the best on their new lives in Nova Scotia and Sara's new business

It's almost time...the PAWS for Charity crew (Julie, Char, Suzanne & Sara) will be making their annual donation to the Canadian Cancer Society - Breast Cancer Research at the end of the month.

This year, we'll also be presenting a cheque sent to us from Marie-Piere. She has made a generous donation on behalf of our Paws for Charity group. Pictured below is Marie-Piere with her new sidekick Sam, and the awesome painting of "Sir Shamrock" in the background (by Doodle Dogs).

We had a great year! We'd like to thank all of our customers for buying our Paws for Charity products. Stay tuned for the final result.

perPETual Calendar

perPETual calendar update:

After an eventful summer of learning about pre-press and designing, I am very happy to say my perPETual calendar is in the final stages of production and ready to be printed soon. This calendar will boast a wonderful collection of images have taken over the past three years.

This 2 year calendar will last for a long time and can be started at any point of the year, without being tied down to a specific year. One year is dedicated to all breed photos and the second year dedicated to greyhounds. What a great gift for that hard to buy for person who loves their dog. Or use it like they do in Holland....they keep perpetual calendars in their bathrooms! They put down everyone's bithdays and this way they never forget!

All the while you will be helping raise money for PAWS for charity as a portion of the sales of this calendar will be going to our cause. For all of you who have pre-ordered, I will be in touch soon to give you the great news that your calendar is READY!

If you're looking for a way to engage your audiences, reach thousands of people, promote your vision in an interactive way, and do so quickly and inexpensively, the blog is an incredibly powerful communications tool. Non-profit organizations and individuals are beginning to use them for mission driven and philanthropic pursuits.

Sara Harley of The Barking Biscuit and three entrepreneurial friends in Ontario joined talent and forces to form the PAWS for Charity project to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. Their blog launched earlier this year complements promotions in their own businesses (check out the Pink Ribbon Chilly Dog Sweater from Chilly Dogs shown here as an example). Like many who blog, Sara had no prior experience and underestimated the reach it would have. The last 100 visitors to the site were from North America, UK, Europe and as far away as the United Arab Emirates. The success of the blog prompted her to start one for her own business.As more and more people link to their site, news of their efforts has spread.

The project was recently highlighted in the grassroots Women Can Do Anything blog, another testament to using technology to unite people of common interests. The WCDA motto of Dream. Believe. Achieve. is a great motto for us all.

Our Paws for Charity logo was created by the design team of Monster Pilot.

Unusual business name, but a great team of designers. They very generously donated their time to create our logo.

If you ever need design work, contact Brian. I've worked with Monster Pilot on many, many projects and am always amazed at the number of choices they give me. The only problem is...with so much choice it's hard to decide on just one!

Julie from Chilly Dogs has added the Paws for Charity logo to her Paws for Charity Chilly Sweaters™ this year. The logo looks fabulous and is available on both the original pink sweater and the new blue fleece.

Julie contributes $10 to breast cancer research from each fleece sold.
And, of course, our logo is also available on our one inch button pins! If you'd like a pin, you can send an email, or order through Chilly Dogs or The Barking Biscuit websites. In Memory of Shamy

This stunning painting of Shamy was created by Kellie Oliphant-Burns of Doodle Dog Paintings.

Shamy had a birthday party last year and collected funds for our PAWS for Charity cause. He & his mom Marie-Piere raised $200 and donated it to breast cancer research on behalf of Paws for Charity.

Shamy recently passed away. In Marie-Piere's words "great dogs make everyone feel loved". I couldn't have said it better myself.

Dog Days of Cancer

I am so excited to announce that some of the portraits I have taken for the dog days of cancer project will be submitted to PhotoSensitive's project called The Cancer Project. PhotoSensitive is an incredible collection of photographers that since 1990 have produced images on social issues to raise public consciousness of critical issues around the world. With the amount of cancer taking hold of so many Canadians, it is so fitting that this group has taken on this project to create awareness in Canadians about cancer.

Within the last two months I have lost two friends to cancer with another uncle being diagnosed with colon cancer just last week. If there was ever a time for my photography to move someone to make a difference, it is now!

Triona & Riley were photographed for the project and are featured on the new Crunch for a Cure label. Riley was a huge support system for Triona while she battled breast cancer.

If you know someone who is going through treatment or has battled breast cancer with a loyal canine by their side and would be open to participating in this photo project please forward them my email birdpix@sympatico.ca

Daffodil Month

It's Daffodil Month at The Canadian Cancer Society. The four of us at PAWS for Charity decided to donate to The Canadian Cancer Society (Breast Cancer Research) since we have customers all over the country, and this charity has a national scope.

Here's a reminder of what the four of us are doing:

Julie Kelly at Chilly Dogs has designed a beautiful fleece Chilly Sweater. "Paws for Charity" is stitched in black across the shoulders. For a closer view of these beautiful sweaters, click here.

Char Harding at Around the Hounds has several gorgeous collars available. You really must go to her website to see them...they're stunning!

URBAN dog photog Sue Bird is working on a perPETtual calendar...it will be available soon! This calendar will be awesome (I've had a sneak preview) and will have 2 years. The great thing about a perpetual calendar is that you don't have to wait until January to start using it...you can use it for 2 full years no matter when you start.

At The Barking Biscuit, we have our Crunch for a Cure dog biscuits. Our biscuits are available in many retail stores, and also on our website. To take a closer look, click here.
