Ask.com has always been a slightly different type of search engine. Beginning with the butler Jeeves, through several transitions which did not improve market share, the latest rendition of Ask.com wants to reinvent the question and answer engine.

You will ask a question and the answers displayed will be ranked by algorithms, not by page rank or other SEO tools. In addition to traditional search search technology, the engine will tap into a network of people to provide answers in real time.

The revamped engine required new sets of algorithms, such as question pattern-matching that can identify the type of question by its structure. So, we may have a search engine that actually answers the questions we have, regardless of keywords, paid insertions or PPC bids. This could signal the start of a improvement in search that goes far beyond the G@@gle.

At the base of the monument it says:
This is our cry. This is our prayer.
For building peace in the world.

The Children’s Peace Monument in Hiroshima is one of the world's most haunting memorials. The bronze statue of a girl holding a paper crane atop the memorial is the likeness of Sadako Sasaki. Sadako was two when the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Nine years later, she was diagnosed with leukemia. According to Japanese myth, if she folded 1000 paper cranes, she would be granted one wish. She died before getting her wish. If you wish to know how to fold a crane, please see this video on YouTube.

Similar stories, wishes and memorials proliferate. Below is a poem by A. Hikmet that was also a song sung by The Byrds. May we all pray for peace in our time.

Time to Say Thanks

Just wanted to pause and think of the men and women all over the free world who have sacrificed their lives so that I might exist today. You are the true heroes of my story, my life, my children.

I also wanted to thank the young people that stand vigil today so that I might live free to die of old age. God bless you Bravehearts in the Middle East.

The origin of Halloween began over 2,000 years ago with the Celtic priests or Druids. The Druids believed that Samhain (October 31), marked the end of the time of harvest, plenty and the end of summer and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, often associated with human death.

For Samhain, Druids built huge bonfires and wore costumes of animal heads and skins to keep the dead away. Soothsaying and sacrifices were the main activities of this night. When the morning of November 1 dawned, the villagers lit their hearth fires from the central bonfire to celebrate the beginning of a new year.'

Under Roman rule two celebrations–Feralia, commemorating the passing of the dead, and Pomona, for the Roman goddess of fruit and trees–were added to the celebration of Samhain.

In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 as All Saints Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-Hallowmas. Samhain began to be known as All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween.

In 1000 A.D., the church declared November 2 as All Souls Day, a day to honor the dead. The three celebrations–the eve of All Saints, All Saints Day and All Souls Day–became known as Hallowmas.

While the origin of Halloween is surrounded in myth and legend, Halloween remains, at least in the USA, a time of carnivals, trick or treat, costumes, pumpkins and mischief.

GM : No Longer Like a Rock

I was not surprised to see that GM is failing to use the bailout bucks to turn the company around.

This time, there will be no Bob Seger to pull their fat from the fire. Like a Rock has been used to sell Chevy trucks for years. The way I heard it, Bob Seger did not want to have his song become an advertising tool. A young man who would be laid off if the automotive plant closed, went to Bob Seger and told his story. Like a Rock became a GM anthem.

. . .initial response post-bankruptcy was to launch a multimillion-dollar (GM-branded) TV and print ad blitz, entitled "Reinvention." Needless to say it was puzzling and short lived. Following that fiasco were new Buick ads featuring an L.A. "Fashionista." . . . Next up was another multimillion-dollar GM brand campaign featuring the new chairman, Ed Whitacre.

GM is not going to survive if they do not "young up" and start using social networks, mobile marketing and online advertising. They need to drop the print and TV ads or tie them into new media.

While Twitter was the variable of choice in this survey, texting is also a real problem in driving. My son's friend ran over the curb, over a fire hydrant, blew three tires and bent two rims because she was texting while driving.

The Blessing of the Animals is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi and his love for all creatures. In many towns, there are processions of animals, from dogs and cats to hamsters and horses. The animals are led to churches for a special ceremony, complete with prayer.

Independent bloggers who fail to disclose paid reviews or freebies may face up to $11,000 in fines from the Federal Trade Commission, according to revisions to the agency's Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising published Monday.

A couple of years ago, disclosure was a buzz word in the blogosphere. Bloggers who wrote sponsored posts or paid reviews, gave testimonials for or reviewed products were called to disclose. If you are not aware of the importance of transparency and honesty in advertising, you should read the summary of the document by FTC. After all, it did take almost 30 years for the FTC to amend them.

WiseStamp Add-On for Firefox

I upgraded my Firefox browser today and there were several add-ons that looked promising. After installing and trying the different add-ons, I ended up with one add-on that I found truly useful. It is called WiseStamp and allows you to have multiple email signatures, both personal and business. There is no limit to the designs you may have.

I played around for about an hour and came up with my email signature below. This will be great for social profile pages, emails, forum footers and hub pages to list all your websites.

I am sure there is one ad that makes you cringe when you see it. For me, it is those stupid Sonic advertisements with the couple or the two men. AUUUGGGGHHHH! Well, do not let those bad ads send your blood pressure up or throw shoes at the TV when the bad ads air. Now, there is something you can do. Submit the worst ad to The Tracy Awards for Bad Ads.

I like this. You may submit any ad that you really hate. It is easy to do and you may be an anonymous nominator if you wish. Submit a TV ad, a print ad, a billboard, a website . . .

The winners (losers) will be sent a Tracy. All the ads that win Tracys will be nationally publicized as The Worst Advertising of 2009.
