Jenny--Joshua is, amazingly, a big fan of vegetables. I made a spinach omelet the other night for dinner and he chowed that down, too. We're going to pay for this good luck with #2, I'm just sure of it.

Ritz--Wormwoman would get my business, too, if we didn't already have a bin. You should post a picture when you get it.

This broccoli came from purchased seedlings. I planted some broccoli seeds at the same time, and the plants that made it through the cold snap are now about the size of the first batch of seedlings when they were transplanted.

I heard that deer can be a big problem for farmers in this area who grow purple hull peas. I mentioned this to my best friend who said, "What's the problem? I like purple hull peas, but I like deer, too."

So did you grow the broccoli from seed? At any rate, it looks awesome and I am impressed. I have a big garden plot but am afraid to plant anything unless I put a fence up...as much as I love deer I would probably be irked if they ate all my veggies.

PS I ordered a worm composting bin and it should be arriving today or tomorrow!! (Yes, ultimately too lazy to do it myself--I got a kit that comes with worms and a book from wormwoman.com...I mean how could I resist buying something from the "WormWoman"?!?!)

Blanching is merely putting the veggies in a pan of boiling water for 1-2 min., taking it out and rinsing in cold water. Drain and put in freezer bags when cool. Blanching stops the enzymes that makes the veggies grow. They have an "off" taste when frozen without blanching.

That looks so good. Even though I consider myself pretty capable around the kitchen I too balk at canning, blanching, and freezing. My mom was a pro and we did tons of the above every summer but for some reason I'm afraid to try my hand at it on my own. Now eating I can do eating!
