Reloxin vs Botox

Reloxin is one of the most well known alternatives to Botox. Approved by the FDA and Health Canada, it is injected, much like Botox, to prevent and eliminate dynamic wrinkles.

You may find physicians offering Reloxin at a lower price due to its larger vials (containing 500 units rather than 100 for Botox). Another difference between the two wrinkle fighters is that the key ingredient is suspended in lactose instead of the sodium chloride used for Botox. However, the same level of care should be taken with Reloxin as you would with Botox because a serious concern with the product is that it can spread faster and farther through the muscles. This may make it more difficult to control the results in areas that require more precision.

Botox for Acne

A recent study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology suggests that Botox may be able to effectively treat people with acne.

The study, conducted by Chicago cosmetic physician Anil Shah, treated 100 patients with Botox.

Botox has been recorded as eliminating acne by performing two functions: inhibiting the production of acetylcholine, a chemical that is believed to stimulate sebum production, then targeting the muscles that are responsible for expanding pores by paralyzing them, thereby limiting the size of the pores. This two step process is what effectively reduces and eliminates the amount of acne affecting a patient. While 17 out of 20 test subjects noted a decrease in pore size as well as sebum production, a larger test group will be required to acquire conclusive results.

Excessive sebum and enlarged pores create a fertile breeding ground for the bacteria that causes acne.

Botox and Depression

Yet another problem Botox may be able to solve.

Along with wrinkles, spasticity and hyperhidrosis, researchers have found that Botox may now be able to treat depression. How you ask? Studies have shown that by assuming a negative expression, such as a frown, can induce negative feelings in the individual with the expression (the theory is known as facial feedback hypothesis.) Botox would be injected in the facial muscles that are responsible for forming the frown, preventing the patient from frowning. By doing this, an improvement in mood may result. Test subjects suffer from depression unrelated to their facial wrinkles.

Psychiatrist Marc Axel Wollmer is leading the trials, currently being performed at Switzerland's Basle University, Switzerland, and Germany's Hanover University.

Price War

Did you know that the price of Botox is set by the manufacturer, Allergan? That's why it's about the same price anywhere you can find it - between $10-$12 per unit.

You may have seen it cheaper at some places, but be careful. Discount Botox may not actually be the same Botox produced by Allergan. In fact, it may be a cheap knockoff that has not been approved for human use, like TRItox. Or, if it is actually Botox, it could have been so watered down that you may just end up paying the same price or more.

If you're unsure whether the Botox you're getting is the real thing, one way to find out is by just asking to see the vial prior to your treatment. It should have the name and Allergan written on it.

Topical Botox?

Ever heard of Argireline? The trade name for acetyl hexapeptide 3, Argireline is marketed by ingredients manufacturer Lipotec as an alternative to Botox. It is targeted to those of us who want to eliminate or reduce our wrinkles but don't want to get an injection or prefer not to be exposed to the toxin.

Applied topically, Argireline is part of some wrinkle-fighting creams and serums at a concentration of generally 3-10% and is believed to basically work like Botox. The ingredient (acetyl hexapeptide 3) penetrates the skin and inhibits the production of an enzyme that is required in the contractions of muscles, thereby keeping the overlying skin smooth.

However, according to reports, Argireline achieves effects that last not for months like Botox, but rather for just a few hours.

Reloxin

There's a new wrinkle fighter on the market that may give Botox a run for its money.

From Ipsen, a specialty pharmaceutical group based in France, comes Reloxin. Reloxin uses the same neurotoxin as Botox to fight wrinkles, but it's believed that it works within about 2 days (as opposed to 3-5 for Botox) and lasts longer. Reloxin has already been available in Europe for quite a while now, being sold under the trade name Dysport. However, it's still being reviewed by the FDA to ensure its safety and effectiveness.

With Botox being most likely the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedure in North America, it will definitely take a hit when Reloxin becomes widely available.

Is Botox Permanent?

Remember - a single Botox injection, regardless of how many units are administered, does not achieve permanent results for any wrinkle. When Botox is injected into the muscle that is causing the wrinkle in the overlying skin, it only temporarily paralyzes that muscle.You should expect results to last up to 4 months, though it may be longer following a series of successful injections.

If you want something that lasts longer, you may want to explore other options, such as facial implants, some injectable dermal fillers, and fat transfer. Just ask a reputable cosmetic surgeon or physician to learn more!

Facelift or Botox

So it’s come to that point in your life – you’re considering having a little “work” done. But you don’t know what you want to do. Don’t know who to turn to or what to ask for. Well really, it depends on what stage of life you’re in when you hit “that” point.

If you’re in your 30’s, chances are you just have minimal wrinkles such as crowsfeet. Fillers or Botox can easily remedy and smooth out those areas and you’ll be happy as a clam.

In your 40’s, the “laugh lines” start to set in. Also your face starts to deflate just a bit. You might use a combination of fillers to combat these problems, or perhaps a “mid-face” or “short-scar” lift. Nothing too serious. A week off work and you’re ready to go.

By the mid-50s, the skin requires more attention around the neck. Also, the skin around the face sort of repositions itself. At this point you might opt for a more extensive combination of procedures: a facelift, fillers or implants to rejuvenate the face. This may take a little more time for recovery, but in the end the results will be worth it.

Once you’re in your 60s and 70s, you’ll start to battle “hollowness” from losing some facial fat or having a bit of sag. A facelift would probably be the option you’d take at this point in order to replace some of the volume and remove some excess skin to present a smoother, fuller face.

So yes, it’s come to that point, but as you see – there are a multitude of options from which to choose. So jump in with your eyes open. And come out looking great.

Charlize Theron not ready for Botox just yet

Charlize Theron has admitted that her boobs are sagging and her spectacular on-screen figures is not quite withstanding the test of time:

“I’m 32 and as you get older, you get wrinkles and your boobs sag. You get wisdom too so it’s not all bad.”

Despite this, she's not quite ready for Botox just yet:

“You can’t really do anything about ageing. Some people have Botox, and that’s great. Hopefully I’ll be okay with not getting Botox, but who knows?”

Only time will tell but remember, the best use for Botox is a preventative. It still works once you have the wrinkles but the best option is to use it before the wrinkles appear.

There's a lot of controversy surrounding the administration of Botox to pregnant women.
This all stems from the research that has been performed on the subject, which has been deemed inconclusive. Botox may or may not harm the baby of pregnant women.

However, if you're pregnant, it is advised that you should not receive Botox treatments because of the possible risk that it can harm the health of your baby. Possible risks include abnormalities of the fetus and miscarriage. There is a possibility that Botox can be passed onto the baby, whether while in the womb or through breast milk. Yes, studies remain inconclusive, but many women have chosen to not take the risk when it comes to their baby.

The FDA recommends pregnant women not receive Botox treatments.

Botox for the Prostate

A quick administration of Botox to the prostate could help treat an enlarged prostate, a condition referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH affects more than 50% of men over 60 and a staggering 90% of men over 80, making it difficult to urinate. Surgery is required in some cases.

Though the treatment is still in the testing stage, results have so far been successful for its participants. Botox has been able to reduce or limit the number of prostate cells dramatically by cell death so that it is no longer dangerously enlarged. The risk of cancer has also been reduced.

Bad Medicine

On Thursday, June 26, Las Vegas police arrested a doctor and his wife for administering a less expensive form of Botox not approved by the FDA. The form of botulism toxin they administered was being advertised as Botox, but was in fact a toxin purchased from a company based in Tucson, Arizona that purely for research purposes, rather than for human use.

The doctor, Stephen Lee Seldon and wife, Deborah Seldon, were staff of the medical clinic for aesthetic enhancement called A New You.

Virginia Madsen, Pro Botox

Increase in Cosmetic Surgeries Performed Last Year

The statistics for 2006 are finally out for the cosmetic surgery field in the United States, as released by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Only cosmetic procedures performed in the United States were examined, but they may give us insight on the trends in Canada.

Close to 11.5 million cosmetic procedures were performed across the U.S., an increase of 1% over numbers compiled in 2005. 35-50 comprised the largest age group.

Botox
It's fast, easy, and can be repeated when (and if) necessary. There are no incisions, no lengthy recovery time, and results appear in a few days. Plus, a procedure is far more affordable than other cosmetic treatments.

That's probably why Botox was the most popular procedure in the country, and most likely still is. In fact, over 3.18 million Botox procedures were performed last year. It was at the top of the list for both men and women.

Liposuction
A svelte body is difficult to achieve for most people, especially when it comes to keeping the fat from accumulating in those problem areas such as the thighs, upper arms and lower abdomen.

Liposuction is an effective way to achieve those contours you've always wanted. According to the ASAPS, the most popular invasive cosmetic procedure overall in 2006 was liposuction. However the type of liposuction performed (tumescent, traditional, etc.) was not mentioned. Of the 1 million procedures men underwent, 53,263 were liposuction.

Breast Augmentation
Yes, women tend to place more value and importance on their physical appearance. As a result, it comes to no surprise that a staggering 92% of the cosmetic procedures in the U.S. were performed on women. Statistics show that procedures performed on men actually dropped 5% when compared to 2005.

And the most popular invasive cosmetic procedure for the fairer sex? Breast augmentation, with 383,885 women across the United States surgically improving the size of their breasts with saline or silicone gel implants. Botox was the most popular non-invasive procedure for women.

In the opposite direction, breast reduction totaled 145,822.

Unfortunately, many celebrities do not freely admit to receiving Botox injections, or any other cosmetic medical treatment for that matter. When asked, they generally deny reports or ignore the question altogether, hoping they'll lead us to believe they're just aging gracefully. Let's face it, though. It's not that difficult to figure out. No matter how much make-up is slathered on, a simple comparison of old and recent images will generally give you the answer. Look at Nicole Kidman, for example. Her elegant beauty is beginning to falter, as her forehead appears unnaturally taut and wrinkle-free. There's no way she hasn't received a Botox injection (or several from the looks of it), despite not having yet admitted to getting one.
