Suffolk is a county steeped in history, and its coastal and countryside scenery has long been a source of inspiration to artists and writers. It’s the ideal place to walk and unwind, with a diversity of landscapes and an impressive network of routes, all well waymarked and easy to follow.

Whether you are a local or a tourist enjoying a Suffolk cottage, you are sure to enjoy the selection of walks below.

The Angles Way runs along the border of Norfolk and Suffolk in the beautiful Waveney Valley, while shorter circular routes off this path lead to some of the area’s lesser-known villages.

The Suffolk Coast and Heaths area – designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on 1970 – extends from the Stour estuary in the south to Kessingland in the north and is a low-lying area of astonishing variety, a mix of shingle beaches, crumbling cliffs, marshes, estuaries, heathland, forests and farmland. There are three long distance routes here: the 50-mile Suffolk Coast Path from Felixstowe to Lowestoft; the 60-mile Sandlings Walk between the eastern fringes of Ipswich and Southwold, linking the remaining fragments of beautiful Sandlings Heath; and the 42-mile Stour and Orwell Walk from Felixstowe to Cattawade and Manningtree, around two of the most beautiful estuaries in East Anglia.

Suffolk is famous for its gentle landscapes. Along the river Stour south of Lavenham is 'Constable Country', forever associated with the painter’s most poignant works. Walks between Sudbury and Flatford capture the essential 'Englishness' of the scenery – Flatford is the location for one of Constable's most famous paintings and is now a major tourist attraction, while upstream at Sudbury is the birthplace of another great English painter, Thomas Gainsborough.

To discover a totally different aspect of Suffolk, take a walk in The Brecks, once an ancient heathland. The landscape today is a result of the sandy soil and the winds that have blown across it over the centuries – twisted trees, open heaths, huge horizons and a variety of habitats are to be found in this 370 square miles, with Brandon a good base from which to step out.

Sara lives and works on the Norfolk/Suffolk border but loves to escape as often as she can to her holiday home in North Norfolk, where she spends her time walking, birdwatching and painting.

COMMISSIONS

'I do not charge for my first site visit, when I spend time finding out about my client’s goals and their likes and dislikes, and make an initial assessment of the garden. I then send an estimate for surveying the site and drawing up an outline plan.

'If this is accepted, I draft a plan, taking into account the architecture of the house, any existing features, views or eyesores, soil conditions and the client’s own ideas. I discuss this draft with my clients and amend it where necessary.

'I then draw up a final plan, and this is followed by detailed planting plans. Colour, texture, form, foliage and scent are all taken into consideration, and planting schemes can be designed using any combination of trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses, bulbs and annuals to suit the particular conditions of the site.

'If required, I can provide a maintenance schedule, to help with the after-care of the garden and I can also make periodic site visits to discuss its development. I undertake projects that vary in scale from large country gardens to urban courtyards, potagers or just border designs.'

Bullfinch - Waveney Wildlife

Bullfinch

Despite its distinctive colouring, the bullfinch is not often seen; it is a shy bird, keeping cover in hedgerows and bushes. Often the only clue to its presence is its call.

Characteristics
The Bullfinch is a bulky bull-headed bird; the male is unmistakable with his bright pinkish-red breast and cheeks, grey back, black cap and tail, and bright white rump. The black bill is short and thick. The female and young birds have grey-buff underparts.

Habitat
Bullfinches are usually found in woodlands, orchard and hedgerows. The birds mainly breed in woodlands but also in parkland and gardens.

They build nest in bushes or trees using twigs, moss and lichens, and laying between 4-7 eggs.

Behaviour
Bullfinch mainly feed on seeds and buds of fruit trees, which has made them a pest in orchards.

They often raid orchards to strip fruit trees of their young buds. When they visit the garden they usually take seed from a hanging seed feeder or suet cake.

The pleasant song of this unobtrusive bird contains fluted whistles and is a quiet warble. However, you are more likely to hear its call, which is a piped "phew".

That is absolutely the result I want, because if my work allows you to wander out of the stressful reality of real life for just a moment each time you looked at it, then I will have truly achieved what I set out to do.

Callishibori
Callishibori has made the specialist art of indigo dyeing and shibori accessible and achievable both to the beginner and the more experienced textile practitioner.

Not until Callishibori have indigo, the necessary reducing agent, fabric prepared with a design, and stitch formats been brought together, with thorough instruction. They are presented as informative starter packs and project packs.

For the beginner, the starter packs make that first step into the world of indigo shaped resist dyeing, 'shibori', much less daunting, and provide a solid foundation upon which to build skill and knowledge. The more experienced textile practionioner can benefit from a tailor made service, as ingredients can be supplied for their specified vat size.

With stitch instruction, templates and the ever poplular 'Seriously Strong Thread' you will be able to design your own patterns, and produce unique indigo shibori fabrics which are ideal for patchwork and quilting, embroidery, art textiles, fashion and many other textile disiplines. They can, of course be enjoyed as indigo fabrics in their own right!

Callishibori came about by listening to students. Now almost everything that is needed to start an indigo shibori project is just there, conveniently packaged, with easy to follow instructions and generous information.

Indigo
The story of indigo is amazing! Known to man in ancient times and harvested from plants flourishing in hot climates, it became the world’s most important dyestuff by the end of the 17th century. The invention in 1856 of the first coal tar dyestuff heralded the manufacture of synthetic indigo some years later.

Shibori
With shibori resists, (and shibori relief), one is immediately engaged with the fabric, organising it, then securing it, often into odd shapes and distorted 3D forms, before it is dyed. It is the essence of fabric manipulation - quite different from other textile colouring methods in which cloth is kept flat and open to receive dye.

Callishibori enables you to create shibori and enjoy the magic of indigo through indigo dye packs, stitch packs, shibori stencils and much more. Products are available through mail order, at shows and exhibitions.

In a mere half-dozen films released between 1959 and 1975, director Geoffrey Jones revealed himself as an outstanding talent, embracing industrial film making as consistent with a personal style, blending movement and sound into a joyous, rhythmic whole. Brilliantly aided by Wolfgang Suschitzky's shimmering camera work, the Oscar-nominated 'Snow' is Jones' masterpiece. Festive top tips from NHS Suffolk  

It’s snowing, people are getting into the festive spirit and it’s almost Christmas. So here are a few top tips from NHS Suffolk on how you can take care of yourself and your family over the festive period to ensure you have a safe and happy time.

Take care and be prepared
Take extra care not to slip, trip and fall, stock-up on common medicines such as paracetamol, and if weather conditions are severe, only travel if it’s essential.

Know where to go
If you do have any injuries over Christmas or New Year, be sure you know where to go to get treatment. The NHS Suffolk region has three minor injuries units that are a faster alternative to A&E departments for minor injuries and ailments, in Felixstowe, Ipswich and Haverhill – all three opening seven days a week, including public holidays. No appointment is necessary and most patients are seen within an hour. Many GP surgeries also offer a minor injury service during their normal opening hours. See www.suffolk.nhs.uk for more details.

NHS Direct 
Unless your condition is serious the first port of call should always be NHS Direct, in confidence on 0845 46 47, and local pharmacies across Suffolk can offer expert advice on common ailments and the use of medicines.
 
Know your limits
When it comes to alcohol – most of us enjoy a drink or two but those glasses can add up – and regularly exceeding your recommended daily alcohol limit can increase the risk of long term health harms. The Department of Health recommends that men should not regularly drink more than three to four units of alcohol daily and that women should not regularly drink more than two to three units daily. Try alternating soft drinks with alcoholic ones and don’t get into buying rounds to avoid drinking more than you intended.

Alastair McWhirter, chairman of NHS Suffolk, said: “As we look forward to the festive season, we would urge everyone across the county to be sensible and make sure that they take care of themselves, and know where to go to get the right treatment if it’s needed – especially in this icy weather.

“We’d also like to thank all the NHS staff who will be working over the festive period in our hospitals, minor injuries units, GP practices, pharmacies and in the ambulance service, for the great work they do to provide the best possible healthcare for Suffolk people, all year round.”

It is a lovely hall, the bar will be open, there is plenty of free parking, and we look forward to seeing you there.

Shani Cantor will be a guest act on that night, and we are both doing the show for the K.S.S.C. Re-furbishment, for the good of the local community. In other words it is a charity night for them.

It is very difficult to advertise a charity show, as there is no money to do that with ~ so ~ please spread the word and let's hope we can fill it for them and make it all worth while.

How does Equity Release Work? By releasing tax-free cash from part of the value locked up in your home, you can improve your lifestyle in retirement – without having to move or make any repayments. Many customers use this money to repay an existing mortgage, make home improvements, buy a new car, and even go on holiday, while others may wish to offer financial assistance to their children.

Some of your questions answered

Is there a minimum amount I have to take?

There may be a minimum amount you have to take. This could be, say £15,000 or £25,000. It will depend on the scheme and provider. But you may not have to take it all at once. Drawdown loans can be taken in smaller amounts over time.

What happens to my partner if I die?

If the scheme is in both names, the arrangement will continue. If the property and scheme were in your sole name, the property would have to be sold and your partner would have to find somewhere else to live (unless for example they could repay the lifetime mortgage in full).

Would an equity release scheme reduce the amount of inheritance tax due on my estate after my death?
An equity release scheme will reduce the value of the estate you leave when you die so this may reduce any inheritance tax. But if you are thinking of using an equity release scheme as part of your planning for inheritance tax, it’s best to seek professional advice.

Who would be responsible for maintenance costs in the home?
You will be responsible for keeping the home in good repair. If you don’t maintain the home, the scheme provider could arrange the necessary repairs and you would have to pay for them.

What happens if I or my partner needs long-term care?
Your equity release scheme will usually carry on unchanged if care is provided in your own home or just one of you moves to a residential or nursing home. If you both move into a care home, the scheme will usually end and the property will be sold.

What about changes in my circumstances?
If you take equity release while single and later decide to share the home, you may be able to transfer the scheme into your joint names, but this may only be possible if the second person meets the scheme’s minimum age requirements. There may also be a charge for this. If you cannot transfer the scheme into joint names, the other person will not be able to stay in the home if you die or move out.

Funding award to speed health provision for Norfolk and Waveney’s elderly

Norfolk and Waveney are to become a centre of excellence in the provision of health care for the elderly.

A new health partnership, Norfolk and Waveney Health Innovation and Education Cluster (HIEC), has been awarded Department of Health funding in a national competitive bidding process. Norfolk and Waveney HIEC will combine its skills and experience to accelerate the coordination of health and social care for older people, in mental health, acute services, long-term conditions and end of life care.

The Norfolk and Waveney (HIEC), comprises a core membership: Norfolk Community Health and Care, NHS Norfolk, Norfolk County Council, NHS Great Yarmouth and Waveney, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the University of East Anglia, Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, City College Norwich and James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Also on board are organisations from outside the public sector, including Archant, the publisher of regional and local newspapers.

The Partnership will work to bring the benefits of research and innovation, such as assistive technologies, directly to patients more quickly and effectively. It will take a lead in work force development and share best practice from across the United Kingdom and Europe. Norfolk and Waveney will also become a model for other areas of the UK with similar demographics.

The Partnership’s bid document highlighted the local challenges, including a startling 18 year life expectancy gap for men between the best and worst off in our communities.

Speaking for the partners, Hadrian Ball, Medical Director for Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, said: “It is fantastic news for the Norfolk and Waveney health and social care system. The creation of this HIEC will enable local NHS and social care organisations and partners from independent and educational sectors to effectively develop plans that will address the specific health challenges - health needs of an ageing population - that will face the people of Norfolk and Waveney during the coming 5 -10 years.”

Addressing health inequalities and improving care for older people are two key planks in both NHS Norfolk's and NHS Great Yarmouth and Waveney's five year strategies, which will guide the provision of healthcare in their respective areas in the years ahead.

The funding awarded to the Norfolk and Waveney HIEC is £650,000. The Partnership is one of 17 successful applicants across the country chosen by an Independent Award Panel Chaired by Sir Alan Langlands, Chief Executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for England, which awarded a total of over £11 million.
