Susie’s Favourite Recipes

Chocolate Steamed Sponge Pudding

50 g (2 oz) Castor Sugar
(you can use normal granulated if you wish)
50 g (2 oz) Margarine
75 g (3 oz) Self-raising Flour
25 g (1 oz) Cocoa
1 Egg
15 ml (1 tbsp) Milk
One greased 500 ml Pudding Basin

* Cream margarine and sugar together until soft and fluffy.

* Beat in the egg.

* Fold in the flour, cocoa and milk.

* Place the mixture into the greased pudding basin.

* Cover with grease proof paper and/or silver foil. Tie with string.

* Steam for about 1 1/2 hours.

* You can serve with custard or if you are a chocolate lover a chocolate sauce would be wonderful.

* Enjoy!

Green Woodpecker

Characteristics
The green woodpecker is very colourful, especially in springtime. It has a bright red crown, green back, greenish/buff under parts and yellowish rump. The male has a red stripe under its eye and the female has a black stripe. The tail is blackish with green barring. The bill is grey-black and legs olive-grey. The juveniles are speckled with black on the under parts and head, and spotted with white on the mantle and coverts.

Habitat
The green woodpeckers can be seen in gardens eating ants on the lawn. The nest is built in a hole in a tree. The eggs are about 32 mm by 23 mm. They are smooth, glossy and white. Both adult birds share the duty of incubating the eggs as well as feeding the young once they have hatched.

Green Woodpeckers rarely move far from their nesting site. Young birds disperse from their natal grounds in the autumn.

Behaviour
Their call is a loud, far-carrying laugh or "yaffle". They are a woodland bird and feed on insects, such as ants, beetles and caterpillars, by extracting them from crevices in trees with their long sticky tongue.

They are also often seen feeding on ants on the ground, e.g. garden lawns and pastures.

The Beach joins the Beccles Carnival as our official radio Station this year and will be attending all events over the Carnival weekend. Look out for their presenters, the Beach Bunny and make sure you pick up your free car sticker!

Friday the 18th July 2008 brings you Summer Ska 2 with Headline Act Neville Staple, formally of the Specials and Fun Boy 3. Since 1998 Neville has been on a mission to entertain, successfully touring Japan, South America and extensively touring North America with his own band. It is worth seeing Neville's live performance; his captivation stage presence and distinct voice are well worth it. Catch his show at the Beccles Quay, and you'll get a mix of old favorites plus loads of his brand new original solo material.

Neville Staple has been recording in both the UK for 525Music Productions at Planet Studios, and in Southern California recording and writing.

Monkey Spanner will be playing in support. The band consists of a full Brass Section plus Guitars, Keyboards and Drums. Monkey Spanner will entertain you with classic SKA & 2 Tone hits from the 60's, 70's & 80's. This is GET-UP & DANCE music for audiences of all ages.

The infectious SKA beat always fills the dance floor wherever they play. Monkey Spanner's antics on stage are guaranteed to get the audience involved in a great party atmosphere - There's always someone 'monkeying around' and something happening on their set! Summer blues on Saturday 19th July will be headlined by the Blues Brothers and the Bluesettes with a full 6 piece live band including Brass Section. The sixth annual exhibition at Narborough Hall, Narborough, Norfolk opens on Sunday 3 August. A selection of paintings, watercolours, lithographs and tapestries by John Piper (1903–1992), one of the best-loved British artists of the 20th century, will be on display in the house.

The exhibition runs from Sunday 3 August to Sunday 31 August;
open Sundays to Wednesdays from 11am–5pm
including August Bank Holiday Monday.
Admission is £3.50, concessions £2, children free.

The exhibition is co-curated by the distinguished art historian Professor Frances Spalding of Newcastle University, who has just completed a book on the artist, and the Robert Sandelson Gallery, London.

The show will focus mainly on Piper’s work of the 1930s and 40s as well as his love of East Anglian subjects. A dedicated space will showcase the many different artistic techniques Piper employed. The exhibition will include a number of works drawn from private collections that have rarely – if ever – been on public display.

Born in 1903 in Epsom and educated at the Richmond School of Art and the Royal College of Art, John Piper was one of the most versatile artists of the century. His career spanned over seven decades until his death in 1992.

Especially famous for his paintings of churches, Piper was also a major contributor to the 1930s abstract painting movement. Always interested in architecture, he collaborated with the poet John Betjeman on the famous Shell guides and was commissioned by the government to document the devastation of British cities during World War II.

Renowned for his stage designs, particularly those done for Benjamin Britten’s operas, Piper also received major commissions for stained glass windows such as the great Baptistery window in the new Coventry Cathedral.

Visitors to this years Seething Airfield Charity Air Day can expect to be entertained with some traditional airshow razzmatazz, much like that of those barnstorming days seen early last century.

Aeroplanes will try to fly under a limbo, burst balloons and attempt to cut ribbons in an entertaining set piece that shows off some real flying circus antics, not seen at airshows in recent times.

Seething Airfield will host the eighth Charity Air Day on Sunday September 7th 2008 and the show this year promises new features in the air and on the ground. In addition to the flying circus routines, a target will be bombed by display pilots – using bags of flour! 2 hours of aerobatics, aerial demonstrations and flypasts will keep visitors enthralled and entertained. Local and national display pilots will come together and provide breathtaking manoeuvres, pushing their aeroplanes to the limits.

Live music is always a popular feature and this years show promises to deliver entertainment all the way as we welcome for the first time ‘The Silver Bird’. The Silver Bird is a replica WW2 Electra transport aircraft with fully functional engines! And when the engines quieten down, bring on the jive dancers, for the aircraft will suddenly burst into life as a sound stage with music of the WW2 era. When the Silver Bird is resting, The American Tan will once again delight crowds with their renditions of wartime songs as they take centre stage, for 45 minutes of pure nostalgia. We welcome them back to Seething for the third time.

Local car enthusiasts – vintage, modern and military (the cars, not the drivers) are participating again and in greater numbers following the success of last years show. The Norfolk Military Vehicle Group, Brandon Classics and Wymondham Old Timers will all have members participating with a varied range of vehicles on public display.

The event is proving ever popular with local traders since space for this years show had sold out by early June! Around 36 stalls will occupy the green, selling everything from hand made jewellery, aviation models and crafts to car products.

New to Seething is a display from the 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles as they were during WW2. Visitors can see a typical battlefield encampment, talk to the soldiers and just might, be allowed to look through the sights of one of their heavy field guns.

Plenty of entertainment for children to, with rides, an inflatable slide and a bouncy castle. For the younger children, Punch and Judy along with some magic from Professor Jingles should keep them amused, entertained and out of mischief! “We have a definite nostalgic theme this year”, says show organiser Paul Holmes. “Not surprising as Seething was home to several thousand Airmen during the WW2 era and that story is told most comprehensively in the old WW2 Air Traffic Control Tower Museum”, he adds. “But it’s not all about nostalgia, since the participation of Radio Norwich and their mascot ‘Norry’ the dog brings proceedings right up to date".

Thanks to sponsorship from Mitchells Renault of Lowestoft and Lowestoft Fire, along with contributions from local businesses, the organisers of this years event have been able to hold gate prices to those of last year. Proceeds are again being donated to the East Anglian Air Ambulance fund.

Mothers and Fathers - Then and Now!

Father’s day has come and gone again for another year. Am I mistaken or was there less hype than we have come to expect leading up to it? Advertisers in the media seemed unusually quiet about it and you had to look to find any reference to it in the shops and stores. Perhaps I didn’t visit the right places!

Did You Know?

Mother’s Day has been recognised and practiced for quite a long time. It used to be the day that parents were invited to join their children at Sunday school when a special service was held and mothers were all presented with a bunch of spring flowers by their offspring. Usually daffodils but sometimes primroses or violets they had especially picked that same morning. The day was conceived to give all youngsters the opportunity to express thanks to their parents and as they grew up the habit persisted. In many families it became a celebration that equalled any birthday.

It was probably during the time when women were fighting for their independence and sex discrimination was being outlawed that Father’s day, with a certain influence from America, was introduced as a boost to men’s equality. This was quickly taken up by the companies supplying greetings cards and soon followed with lots of advice about which presents were the most appropriate to emphasise and show how much the family really thought of Dad. As always, if the media gives sufficient attention to something for long enough, the public will usually respond.

Mothering Sunday started with just a bunch of flowers. Soon some youngsters made ‘Thank You’ cards to go with them and in no time at all the shops had appropriate and attractive ones for sale weeks before they were wanted. As time passed the children became adults and no longer attended Sunday school and gave flowers to express their feelings. Instead they gave presents like they did on other anniversaries. Following their example their offspring, usually financed by dad, would buy them something. Now we have reached the stage where all mothers, regardless of their age, receive cards and presents on this day. Some celebrate the occasion by going out for a family day which perhaps includes a meal.

Father’s day didn’t get the same start as Mothering Sunday and never became as widespread or popular. It probably only got going at all because the children thought dad was being left out. Also it was much more difficult to know what to buy for a man, especially after most of them stopped smoking. A packet of Woodbines had always been an acceptable present.

With each year that passes it will get more and more difficult to keep the day a special one. Perhaps that has already been noted and is the reason why it passed so quietly this year!

Family units as we knew them are no longer conducive to the way many people have to live. Some couples marry while others cohabit and for various reasons the number of single parent families increases. A few of them are the result of broken marriages but some were never married or partners.

Unfortunately, there is very little inducement or much encouragement for couples to pay out what savings they have on a costly wedding or even a modest ceremony. The days have long since gone when the girl’s parents were obliged to foot the bill. Of course there will always be those with personal or spiritual reasons for wanting to marry. However, it seems most couples are much better off financially if they don’t tie the knot.

It doesn’t matter too much until they have children who really do need two parents in constant attendance during the time they are growing up. They also want a stable home that gives them confidence and a refuge to retreat to for help should they need it. Nothing can replace the traditional family circle when it comes to laying the foundations for a child’s character. Whatever they learn by example from those near to them, especially in those early years, is what they will depend on in later life.

So what does the future hold for Father’s day? Will there be sufficient couples marrying to sustain it? Some might say that makes no difference but when statistics show us the percentage of children in school classes that are no longer living with their biological father, it gives cause for concern. It was recently reported that those pupils fortunate enough to belong to a family unit find progress with their education far easier and consequently do much better than their fellows. Presumably, they get more encouragement and help at home.

It’s a situation we can do little or nothing about! The Government could do a great deal to encourage couples to marry and ensure there is always someone at home when their youngsters need them but this will never be while they are legislating to get both parents out to work. During children’s early years it should be a full time job for one of them to look after the home and family.

Many things in life have a habit of going ‘full circle’, let’s hope this does and soon!

performs Handel's Messiah

On Saturday evening 5th July, St Michael's Church in Beccles echoed to the sound of a both poignant and joyful performance of Handel's "Messiah" given by the Beccles Choral Society conducted by Vetta Wise and enjoyed by an audience of some 300 people.

The choir produced a clean and focused sound and rose to the complexities of many of the fugal passages in the choruses. Vetta drew out a real sense of drama throughout the changing moods of the piece from both choir and orchestra. The "Hallelujah" Chorus was a particular highlight of the performance as were the final choruses "Worthy is the Lamb," and "Amen."

Each of the Soloists brought fine performances. Rhona McKail - Soprano sung a memorable "I know my redeemer liveth," and "Rejoice greatly." Rhona produced a lively, well projected tone that really communicated both words and music. Rowan Hellier - Alto, sang with a rich and warm sound and communicated wonderfully the tenderness of "He shall feed his flock," and "He was despised," with great intensity.

Nick Allen - Tenor, coped well with the technical demands of arias such as "Every valley," and "Thou shalt break them." Matthew Sprange - Bass, produced an outstanding performance particularly of "The trumpet shall sound," and "The people that walked in darkness." His wonderfully rich and fluent tone was one of the highlights of the performance. All the soloists are young singers currently studying at the Guildhall School of Music and they are all names that we will hear much more of in the future. The orchestra was led by Gregory Eaton with some outstanding trumpet playing from Ray Simmons and Richard Keeble, particularly in the "Hallelujah Chorus," and "The trumpet shall sound.".

This was Vetta Wise's final performance with the Beccles Choral Society after 5 years as their director and conductor, and was without doubt a fitting tribute to the work she has done with the choir during this time. This was a good, well directed performance that brought immense pleasure to every member of the audience.
