The dinner will be held at the elegant Kiana Lodge on Thursday, September 25.

A reception, with no host bar, will begin at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:45 p.m. The cost of the dinner is $50 per person. Seating is limited, so reservations are needed by September 18. Dinner will be followed by a dessert auction.

Goldmark has been endorsed by Washington Conservation Voters, the Washington Education Association and a broad coalition of labor, agricultural and community leaders, educators and environmental organizations.

“The Commissioner of Public Lands has oversight of millions of acres of public forest, rangeland, shorelines and aquatic resources, said Kurt Fritts, Executive Director of Washington Conservation Voters. “It is important to elect a candidate who has a strong commitment to the environment and a vision for how this post can best sustain our natural resources for future generations. Facing monumental issues such as global warming, Puget Sound clean-up, and forest management, Peter Goldmark stood out as the leader we need in this critical time.”

To reserve a seat at the dinner, send a check payable to the 23rd LD Democrats ($50 per person) to PO Box 368, Poulsbo WA 98370. The deadline for reservations is Thursday, September 18.

For information about the 23rd LD Democrats, contact Remo Barr, Chair, at 360-779-4393 (email: remok@comcast.net).

Kitsap 23rd LD Webmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10838978811409062226noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2518398626970175314.post-14757610226323709382008-08-04T09:31:00.000-07:002008-08-04T09:32:49.943-07:00Local democrats need YOUR help!Dear 23rd LD voter:

The next two weeks may be the most important days of this election year! Some races will be determined on August 19. For candidates that will advance to the general ballot, a strong showing dries up money for the opponent and gains more support for the winner. In either case, generating a large turn out for the primary is vital.

There are indications that the turnout will be lower than usual. The August date is new to voters and seems to be lacking in excitement. Looking at the ballot, the voter may not find the “hot race” that motivates them to send in their ballots.

No matter which Democratic candidate you’re most interested in supporting, the best way to help is to increase the participation of Democratic voters. And, increasing participation can be as simple as a reminder phone call from a volunteer.

Over the next two weeks, we need to make 20,000 calls to remind local Democrats to send in their ballots.

We have two offices available to call; we’re asking folks to fill a two hour slot between now and Aug 19th and make sixty calls – all to Democrats and all just reminding them to please send in their ballots.

We hope you will choose the office most convenient and make a call. You can choose whatever day and time is best for you:

The 23rd LD Bainbridge Office (937 Hildebrand Lane NE Suite 102) for folks on Bainbridge or in North Kitsap. Phone: (206) 842-1872.

The Kitsap County Office (3100 Bucklin Hill Road, 2nd Floor, Suite 223 (NE corner) for those in Poulsbo, Silverdale, or Bremerton. Phone: 360-698-6833.

If you will call in to one of those offices and volunteer for a two hour slot, you will contribute to boosting Democratic turnout in this primary. And, if we boost turnout in the primary, we will be much closer to winning in the fall.

Bottom line, the time to help us is now. Please step forward.

Remo Barr
23rd LD chair

PS - If you leave a message at the office, be sure to include your name, number, best day and best time to call.

Kitsap 23rd LD Webmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10838978811409062226noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2518398626970175314.post-26958618041242541952008-08-01T01:12:00.000-07:002008-08-01T01:14:06.312-07:0023rd LD Democrats 2008 Primary Endorsements and ApprovalsDear 23rd LD voter:

Your primary ballot should have arrived or be in the mail soon. Some races will be decided in the primary on August 19 so your vote is especially important.

Since this is Washington State's first election using the top two vote getters advancing to the general election, and candidates self-identify their party leanings, we hope the 23rd Legislative District Democrat endorsements and approvals below will assist you in your decision making.

And a hint: The sooner you vote, the fewer reminder phone calls you will receive.

Remo Barr
23rd LD chair

23rd Legislative District Democrats
Endorsements and Approvals, 2008 Primary

The following candidates have been endorsed for Federal Office:
U.S. Representative CD 1 Jay Inslee
U.S. Representative CD 6 Norm Dicks

The following candidates have been endorsed for State Offices:
Governor: Chris Gregoire
State Treasurer: Jim McIntire
State Auditor: Brian Sonntag
Attorney General: John Ladenburg
Commissioner of Public Lands: Peter Goldmark
Insurance Commissioner: Mike Kreidler

The following candidate has been approved for the office of Lieutenant Governor:
Brad Owen

These two candidates were approved for Superintendent of Public Education: Teresa (Terry) Bergeson and Randy Dorn

These candidates are endorsed In the 23rd Legislative District:
State Senator: Phil Rockefeller
Representative Position 1: Sherry Appleton
Representative Position 2: Christine Rolfes

The following candidate was endorsed for Kitsap County Commissioner District 1:
Steve Bauer

The following candidate was endorsed for County Auditor:
Walt Washington

The following candidates have been endorsed for Judicial Offices:
Supreme Court Justice Position 3 Mary Fairhurst
Supreme Court Justice Position 4 Charles W. While Phil shares some of his accomplishments in the letter, two that he doesn't mention have made me especially proud: This year, the Children's Alliance, Washington's advocacy group for children's issues, gave our Senator a 100% rating. Last year, the Washington Conservation Voters named Phil Rockefeller "Legislator of the Year" for his work on environmental issues.

I hope you will attend the event on June 9th at the Bainbridge Island Filipino American Community Hall (7566 NE High School Road, Bainbridge, starts at 5:30 pm).

Please do remember to RSVP no later than June 5th by email to info@philrockefeller.com. Adopting a platform and electing delegates and alternates by presidential preference to the Congressional District Caucuses (held May 17) and the State Democratic Convention (held June 14) are our main tasks on that day.

Registration for the County Convention will begin at 8:00 AM. We could see a turnout of 2000+ delegates and alternates. If you kept your Certificate of Election from the February 9th caucuses please bring it with you and arrive well before the start of the Convention so the Credentials Committee can get you checked in promptly.

A donation of $5.00 is requested of all delegates to help defray Convention expenses and will be payable upon registration, unless a waiver is requested. While some beverage and snack-type food will be available, attendees should bring their own brown bag lunch, as there will not be formal food service available. The Convention does not recess for lunch and, as such, runs continuously throughout the day.

The 23rd and 35th Legislative Districts will hold sub-caucuses at this Convention to elect delegates and alternates to the Congressional District Caucuses and the State Democratic Convention. Unlike past years, the 26th LD will caucus the previous Saturday, April 5th at Gig Harbor High School.

For more information, visit the File Cabinet link above, and review the Call in its entirety.

Kitsap 23rd LD Webmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10838978811409062226noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2518398626970175314.post-81408092451363280772008-03-11T11:36:00.000-07:002008-03-27T10:13:31.978-07:0023rd LD General Meeting, Sunday March 16th; Special Caucus March 17thThe next 23rd LD Democratic general meeting is Sunday, March 16th from 4pm to 6pm at the Poulsbo Firehall. As you must be aware, Karen Flynn, our County Auditor will be retiring from her long-held position effective March 31. In accordance with state law, that places PCOs in a unique position of responsibility as the local party moves to recommend 3 qualified individuals to the Kitsap County Board of Commissioners from which they will appoint a replacement. The candidates who have applied are Walt Washington, Deborah Broughton, Sara Lingafelter and Christopher Tibbs.

Finally, the March 2008 23rd Legislative District Democrats newsletter is now online in a temporary location. Click here for the newsletter.

Kitsap 23rd LD Webmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10838978811409062226noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2518398626970175314.post-5260902174438934432008-02-15T12:30:00.000-08:002008-02-15T12:34:35.839-08:00PCO and Party Activist Training and Crab FeedSponsored by the state party, the upcoming Precinct Committee Officer and Party Activist Training is followed by the Crab Feed on Feb. 18th at the St. Martin's University Pavilion (5300 Pacific Ave SE, Lacey, WA 98503). Thanks to the volunteers who did their best under challenging circumstances to carry off these events. Thanks to the impromptu volunteers at every location, who came forward with no notice to help the coordinators deal with the phenomenally high turnout. Thanks to the facilities who hosted our events, some of whom went above and beyond with problem-solving and logistical help to do everything from unlocking the doors to turning the lights on -- which in some places took hours and tens of phone calls by impromptu volunteers.

Most of all, thanks to the thousands of voters who turned out yesterday to participate in the democratic process at its grassroots finest. We appreciate your energy, your patience, and your willingness to participate in the process. We also appreciate your support. The caucuses are an expensive process for the party, and your generosity yesterday will help cover both the cost of the caucuses and help support democratic candidates.

To those of you for whom this was your first contact with the party, we encourage you to get involved and stay involved. Please bookmark this website and come visit us here again, as updated events and information will be going up as soon as we recover from the caucus clean-up. Please also consider joining the 23rd LD organization. Dues are just $24 a year. Please also RSVP to join us at the upcoming Jefferson Jackson Dinner on February 23rd.

Regardless of which candidate you supported in yesterday's caucus, it is going to take each and every one of us, working together, to elect Democrats to offices at all levels this fall. Thank you for your participation in yesterday's caucus, and for your participation in the months and years to come.

Kitsap 23rd LD Webmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10838978811409062226noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2518398626970175314.post-60132131397048682852008-02-10T08:46:00.000-08:002008-02-10T08:53:24.979-08:00Jefferson Jackson Dinner and Convention CorrectionI hope to be able to post a caucus wrap up a little later in the day, but in the meantime, here's an update on some of the upcoming events in the 23rd LD:

Jefferson Jackson Dinner, February 23rd
The Jefferson-Jackson Dinner and Auction is our principal fund-raiser for Democratic Party candidates. Our keynote speaker will be Washington State Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler on the topic of healthcare reform. With the heightened interest created by Michael Moore's film, Sicko, the topic couldn't be more timely.

This is our big fundraiser of the year and is always well attended by our elected representatives and public officials. Kiana Lodge is famous for its rustic elegance and signature salmon dinners.

We'll have a cocktail reception (no-host bar) at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:45 p.m. Reservations are required because seating is limited. Seats are $50 per person. He has earned it with his work to improve transparency in City government, protect the Island's natural resources, and exhibit due diligence toward the public dollar. Bill represents Bainbridge on the Kitsap Regional Council where his desire for sustainable communities is much appreciated by 23rd members living in the rest of the 23rd.

Kim Brackett has a well rounded background for work on a City Council. She graduated with a degree in business management and has been a project manager for Sound Transit, an environmental consultant, and the primary care-giver to her family. But she offers more than knowledge of transportation and land use issues. It was Kim's watchful presence that led to the restoration of a wetland destroyed by a developer on the Island. Her willingness to take action to protect the public interest is the essence of public service.

Both of these candidates believe that a critical issue for Bainbridge's future is the amount and availability of water on the Island. Both believe that growth must be achieved within the constraints of the natural environment and the result must be a sustainable future.

We believe they are the best chance to see the values we all hold be reflected in our local government and hope you will join us in their support. Ballots must be mailed by August 21st.

Thanks for your attention-
Remo Barr, Chair
23rd Legislative District Democrats

Kitsap 23rd LD Webmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10838978811409062226noreply@blogger.com
