Just playing around, Cat and I thought it would be fun to take some pictures around our neighborhood. This little park between 10th and 11th avenue is so strange. Technically a road should have been built through this space, but instead this tiny little "park" was created. The grass has been growing taller and taller and no one has come to cut it, not a problem because it added to pics.

A Few Words from the Bride:

Even after hearing how quickly your wedding day will go by, we didn’t quite realize how fast it would go until it was actually all over! We tried so hard to slow down and enjoy everything as much as possible, but it still went by in the blink of an eye. After everything was over, we really looked forward to seeing the pictures that Jeff & Catherine had taken, and we certainly were not disappointed! All the beautiful little details that I had tried to take in (yet had a hard time absorbing!) were captured in the most gorgeous photos, it was amazing to see all aspects of the wedding that we may have missed because of we were otherwise occupied. It was such an amazing day, we had the greatest time, and with the beautiful photos we now have, we will always be able to remember each moment perfectly!

Office Renos Complete!

So the office is finally done! It only actually took us 8 days, but I didn't take the images until now. Our floor is made of this engineered hard wood, which isn't to be mistaken as laminate. Laminate is completely fabricated, the top layer is just an image with lots of gloss. Engineered hardwood is a fusion of both types of flooring, it has a core which is like laminate, but the top layer, the layer you see is in fact real hardwood, but it costs about 3 times less than normal flooring. I got it on sale from Rmd. Hardwood Flooring in Richmond on Bridgeport Road. We hope you like the results!

Our next project is to renovate our living room into a meeting room, look back soon for results!

Office Renovation!

It's that time of year, when the sun stays out for longer that always makes me want a change of scene. Thus far my office has been in the basement of my home, a poorly lit, cold, low ceiling, wait... I'm describing every basement!!! So I'm in the process of remodeling my utterly useless dinning room into my new office. I've decided to design it after a Cape Cod Beach House, with a few more contemporary touches. So far we've laid this beautiful new engineered hardwood, in a rich and dark maple, We've painted and installed new lights. Hopefully we will be done soon!

Here are a couple of the shots that Aimgie and Jon chose from their engagement shoot on Granville Island. We're going to be shooting a promotional video along with their wedding this summer so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the release date! Jon and Aimgie described their style to me as casual, fun and relaxed but still a focus on the love and romance, so that's exactly what Catherine and I kept in mind while taking their photographs. Cyclebetes

This year Catherine and I participated in Cyclebetes, a 24 hour stationary cycle relay to raise funds for Juvenile Diabetes Research. We were on Team Larry!! (don't ask) I unfortunately had the shift between 12am and 4am in the morning. Yeah! My friend Mike and I took turns on the stationary bike while watching James Bond and Pirates of the Caribbean, plus there was pizza, I know a hard life, but there really was a challenge. The bike we used was Catherine's sisters and the seat was SOOO uncomfortable. We tried sitting on a pillow, a magazine, standing up... nothing worked. After my friends took over for the 4-8am shift the only part of my body that hurt was my bum.

The good news, we reached our goal of raising $1000.00 in fact our team raised $1500.00!! and the whole event raised over $100,000.00!!! Awesome! Well worth the sore bum!

Officially Onboard for the summer!

Catherine's been shooting with me on and off for the last three years, with school and work in between she hasn't had the time to commit to working full time. But today is my lucky day! Cat will be joining me this summer full time as my assistant photographer. She's chock full of talent, charisma and enthusiasm, and I'm so happy she's working with me this summer. I can't think of any better way to spend my summer with her! Okay, maybe I could... Maui, maybe Cancun? How about Greece??

This month I was working with some older images for the website, and found myself drawn to this photo of Sarah and Brandon. I did some extra touching up as you can see, and I really think it makes the photo "Pop"! During their wedding, after we were done taking photographs downtown we were being driven to the reception, but stumbled onto the Marine Building totally by accident. I think it was the picture of the day!

New Blog!!!

I love these two! My sister and brother came up with the idea to have photos taken of their kids, and I was eager to try some new lighting techniques in the studio. Working in the studio has been really fun but unless you have tons of backgrounds, it doesn't beat being outside! Sophia is my sisters first kid and she's just about to turn one, Jonah, my brother's first baby, is almost three!! There are way too many babies in my life right now, Christmas is going to get expensive!

Finally a Day on the Mountain

I've been waiting for months to go snowboarding with my friends, and what do I decide to do? Take photographs of course! Since I've never taken photographs on the mountain before I thought it would be a great time to start. I enlisted a few friends to jump of a cliff, very safe I know, but we did come up with a few great shots. If there was one thing I learned that day it was how to ride a snowboard with 20 pounds of camera equipment on my back.

Heather and Mark got hitched this winter at the Saint Michael's Parish in Burnaby, considering it was practically winter, we were all super happy that the weather cooperated with us the whole day. The party was the highlight of the day with amazing authentic Italian cuisine, lots of dancing and to top it all off a cup cake tower! Thanks you two for an amazing day!

Photoshoot for an aspiring music artist

People always ask me why I choose to take on such diverse and sometimes "random" projects. The way I look at it is, during the summer my focus, attention and creativity is completely devoted to weddings, but since we shoot such few weddings in the fall doesn't it make sense to get as many new experiences as possible? I'm not a professional fashion, wildlife, model or music photographer but all these new and valuable experiences add to my personality and creativity as a professional wedding photographer and that I can't turn down. Dan Kim who is photographed above has been hitting the music industry head on, he's super talented, energetic and full of ideas! Updated Portfolio and New Site Features

Photoshoot with Local Designer Mariko Aramaki

I’ve always loved to work in the studio and today I had a really wonderful opportunity to take some gorgeous images. My girlfriend did all the organizing so I won’t take any credit. Her good friend just so happens to be an amazing designer named Mariko Aramaki, and was more than happy to have her latest collection photographed. I called my favorite model Erica Chiaki Shimizu who brought along her very talented friend Bella Chen who’s a freelance hair and makeup artist.

We did three different looks with many variations in between and I think together as a team we really accomplished something great. I think my favourite part about working in the studio is the atmosphere, we had plenty of snacks to keep us happy, plus the music and lights, and of course working on something that I’m passionate about topped the list. I hope you enjoy these images as much as we did.

Winter trip to Japan

If you've been wondering why I haven't written in so long it's because I've been away in Tokyo:) It's been four long but very memorable weeks. My girlfriend and I joined a tour of tokyo, osaka and kyoto and had a blast! Our favorite part was the hot spring hotels, nothing like sitting in a hot tub that over looks the pacific ocean. Absolutely beautiful. After our trip we went to visit my family in Taiwan where my parents are from. It was a culture shock, even from Japan there are so many differences. The smells, sounds, the people and the food, it's all different, but in a good way. I have to say we had a really good time in Taipei as well. Instead of being a tourist like in Japan, we were just like locals. My cousins took us out for the local cuisine, we wandered the streets till 3am and ate the most interesting things at the night markets. We even got to experience New Years' Eve Taiwan style. Unfortunelty we had such a great time in Taipei I neglected to take many photographs, so all of the above shots are from Japan. Enjoy them! If anyone needs some pointers on where to visit in Asia let me know, I'm always happy to share my experiences! Cheers

Michele and Andy's Wedding

Michele and Andy are so lovely, we got to know each other doing a fun engagement shoot in Gastown and a hidden Japanese garden near the PNE. If you haven't seen the images they're featured currently on my online portfolio (www.jeffchangphotography.com) While at the wedding Catherine and I ran into Lisa of Frugal Floras who just so happened to be good friends with Michele and Andy. She did all the arrangements for the wedding, and they were breathtaking! Again, like most weddings the food was amazing, they had it catered from an Indian Restaurant...mmm.. good. Cheers to Michele and Andy for having such a beautifully fused cultural wedding!

Cathy and John had a really fun wedding, most of the festivities were at the Morgan Creek Golf Course so it was a really nice relaxing day for everyone. Not long after dinner the dancing started... and boy did they love to dance!!

East Meets West in Minoru Park

Natalie and Afshin had two ceremonies in one day! We started in New Westminster for a traditional ceremony in a church, where two of the youngest guests captured the spirit of life and not to mention my attention! After a quick lunch we drove over to Richmond's popular Minoru Park, we covered a lot of ground and had ample time to capture the bride and groom as well as their beautiful bridesmaids and groomsmen. Shortly after moving to the Executive Inn the Muslim Ceremony started promptly. The bride and groom changed into traditional attire that was truly breathtaking. After the exchange of rings, again, we all headed over to the reception hall where a feast of Indian and Western fair was served!! YUM!

Thank you so much to Natalie and Afshin for having Catherine and I at your wonderfully choreographed wedding! Cheers

Sarah and Brandon's Wedding day

Sarah and Brandon were wonderful to work with, they were fun, casual and most important not stressed!! (good planning should be credited) With a rather unique wedding schedule Sarah had planned her wedding so that the ceremony and cocktail reception would all fall before 5pm. Having done that her guests would have the freedom to roam Vancouver (many were from out of town) or head home. An after party for her closest friends was planned to start at 9pm. Without the stress of waiting guests of tight schedules, Sarah and Brandon were able to relax during the photoshoot. We covered lots of ground, Gastown, Downtown and Jerico Beach. With the sun setting just before we finished, we were able to capture some beautiful shots near the water.

Talking to your photographer about how to plan you day around photography. There's lots to consider when planning the day, not just about guests, ceremony times and when to sit down to dinner, but also time of year, what time the sun will set and where your ceremony/reception is located in regards to where you want photographs taken etc.

Thank you to Sarah and Brandon and their lovely wedding party for being so accommodating and easy to work with! Cheers!

Finding the right photographer

"My son is getting married in October and they could use some advice on how to go about choosing a wedding photographer. What should they look for and what questions should they ask? Should the shoot be all digital, all film or a combination? Does it matter?"
Reply:
"I'm a wedding photographer and I feel it's important for you to decide how much you are willing to spend on the photography and then look in your area for photographers and see what they can do for you inside your budget. Get "quotes" in writing and see their work. Meet the photog and make sure you like their work AND you like them.... Also, if you have been to a wedding lately ask those people about their photographer and see if they were happy with what they got, what they didn't like, what they would have asked for if they could do it over, etc.

A Royal Wedding!

Julie and Trung exchanged vows in the beautiful gardens of Victoria's Hatley Castle. They fell instantly in love with the site when they saw it a few months before their wedding. How couldn't they? The site features three different gardens including a Japanese, rose and Victorian. Just a short walk from the terrace of the castle is the ocean - We wondered down after taking photos with family in the Japanese garden. The burnt sea grass actually added such a beautiful impact to their images. I love working at locations that have more than one backdrop, and Hatley Park is no exception. Our team had such a great time on the island, thanks Julie and Trung!
