Why did you choose this look?
The print on this dress is so gorgeous and eye-catching without being flashy, and I love the element of surprise as it just peeps out from under the coat. The Athena sac is perfect for me because I ride my bike everywhere and the strap is long enough to wear cross-body. The shoes are just fantastic--extremely comfortable (I know this for a fact--I broke them in at the Masters in Augusta) and dressy enough to wear at night. I adore Oblique jewelry, it is so delicate and this necklace doesn't overwhelm the bold print on the dress.

Why did you choose this look?
I chose this look because I am trying to branch out of my usual layered look of vintage flannels and hoodies. The silk of this dress was so buttery, I couldn't help myself, and grey is my favorite shade. The purse added the perfect pop of color and its threading matched the detail of the dress. I loved the sandals and was shocked at how well they fit (it's so hard to find size 5s!).

Why did you choose this look?
Perhaps it was arriving at HH in the pouring rain rather soaked through, but I loved the decadent feeling of this silk dress, as well as its twirl potential and unique style. There was no way I was not going to wear a gold feather crown, so it was an added bonus that the two went well together. Having a bit of an obsession with the color gray, and loving flat boots, I paired the ensemble with the riding boots and added some extra accessories, well, just because I could! It's the kind of outfit I dream about the whole world wearing just for kicks, on the way to the grocery store or at the park.

By day, I'm a technical writer for a great big staffing company. I write business proposals and responses for requests from public and government entities. By night (and by weekend and pretty much all the time in the back of my mind) I am thinking about indie arts and crafts and the handmade movement. Why did you choose this look?
I know everyone wears it here on IRL, but I just love this dress! I have to throw on some leggings because it's short on me, but I could see wearing this sans leggings with something a teeny bit longer, fluffier, and brighter underneath. My work adventures sometimes put a damper on my bright and fluffy looks, but I can't help standing out in a room of government contractors, so why bother! In a heartbeat, I'd keep the bobbles and bright bag, and wear this dress like long top with some wide leg pants. Speaking of shoes these are fab! Super comfy and just the right height.

Why did you choose this look?
I chose the dress because I felt like a goddess of doom in it. But kind of a sexy, flirty, goddess, as in come and get me if you can. The wedges were a perfect and comfortable compliment to the dress. I love big necklaces, heavy enough so that you know what you're wearing at all times, and this gorgeous one was no exception. I grabbed the clutch as soon as I saw it, not only because it was shiny silver, but also because it brought out the grays in my dress, shoes, and necklace. I thought of the cuff as my piece of flair, if you know what I mean... The lightweight trench and colorful umbrella completed my stylin' outfit for a rainy day.

Why did you choose this look?
This is the perfect "I look so put together, but really, I just threw this on!" dress. It's very polished but super low-maintenance and the color and fabric are the perfect combination I'm looking for this season; a flattering nude with a pop of bright blue, and it feels flowy and cool in hot humid New York summer! The sandals are perfect for walking around town in style and comfort, and I'm carrying the Conrad in ginger to contrast the flesh-tone palette. The bag is just the right size and has a pocket for everything I need in a snap and converts to a crossbody shape. People are definitely going to be checking out this outfit on the subway platform.

I am attracted to easy, flowy looks that have a slight edge to them. If I feel romantic one day, I wear more bohemian pieces, but never too pretty. Why did you choose this look?
This wrap dress was simple, easy, gorgeous, and comfortable! It goes perfectly well with my easy going lifestyle. The dress can be more casual for day, or paired with some cute heels for a night out. For my day look, I chose some flats/wedges (I am not sure which images you are using so adjust as necessary) that were fun and flirty. The handbag was a clear choice. Which such amazing detailing, the bag was perfect for summer. It's just the right size to carry my sunglasses, money for an ice cream cone with rainbow sprinkles and tiny umbrella in case of an afternoon rainstorm.

What do you do IRL?
I'm the Editor in Chief of Kitten Lounge, a site that focuses on fashion, style, beauty, food and music. What started as my initial passion for fashion and music (I am the great niece to the late tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson - but don't ask me to sing) I enjoy bringing people hidden finds, indie designers and musicians as well. This site has taken me to Fashion Week, press events and really allowed me to meet interesting people! Why did you choose this look?
I chose this look as I like items that can be dressed up or down. I run around a lot and don't have time to change. I love how easy this outfit is. I would wear it just like this to go to an Editor Presentation during the day or to sit with my team to go over the editorial calendar for the following month. But I could wear this out to a party and simply bring a pair of heels with it. The color palette is perfect! I love the pops of color but that it.s not over powering and the light feeling is very whimsical. I love bringing in the grey tones of the bag as it's a great neutral and adds a pop of something in there. Finally, I love the necklace as I always wear pieces that have stone and I am a huge fan of silver. The way it peeks out of the little keyhole is perfect! Why did you choose the first look?
I'm really digging the one piece swimsuit trend. This particular style is classy but sexy at the same time. I love the low neckline and ruffle detail. The colorful shoes add an unexpected twist to a solid black suit. I picked out this yellow tote to match my bright yellow nails and bring more fun into the look. I've been gravitating to my yellow nail polish recently, a fun cheerful color for summer that is surprisingly neutral! The silver jewelry is a perfect finishing touch for swimwear when you don't want your accessories to be too overwhelming or heavy.

Where the Boys Are...

It's no secret around the design office that I'm totally into men's apparel and style right now, so when I read an article in the NY Times style magazine about Sid Mashburn's amazingly perfect shop in Atlanta, I was instantly in superawe mode. Sigh...I want to go and shop for Ben (and myself!) so so so badly, but time to watch the $'s.

Oddly enough, our superlative apparel designer, Laurel Wells, went home for the holiday break and popped into the southern mecca of homme chic after I begged her to simply touch the door and then touch my hand. Well, SID TOUCHED HER TOTE!!!!!!!!!!

Sid, you are amazing and the Hayden-Harnett spring 10 collection is dedicated to you (and nomads...and lava...and, uhm, abyssinian kittens).

PS- I NEED to buy the neon Caran d'Ache pens from you for my summer writing. do you take phone orders from wishful girls?

For the sake of real-time summer fun and style, we're starting a summer style series called "IRL" (in real life). We'll have hh staffers, friends, family, and special guests come into the Brooklyn HH design : shop and style a complete look from head to toe. Should be interesting and fun since summer style can get a bit repetitive when the mercury climbs. Not all of us are glamazon models and often wonder what something looks like IRL on an average non-model body.

Cargo Cult : Autumn/Winter 2009

In the Solomon islands of the southeastern Pacific and other islands in Melanesia, religious sects known as cargo cults have sprung up intermittently among the islanders, especially in the period immediately following World War II. Islanders became obsessed with the idea that the luxury goods and technological marvels that were uncrated from cargo ships and, later, taken from airplanes or dropped by parachute were gifts for them from the spirits of their ancestors, and that Japanese and U.S. servicemen had apportioned these goods for themselves either by malice or by accident.

When the airfields were abandoned, and cargo no longer came, islanders build airstrips of their own, lit by torches, carved wooden headsets, bamboo antennas, and fetish airplanes of sticks and reeds. Looking up to the sky, cultists waited for their ancestors to send again their planes, and rich cargo. They waited a long time. On the island of Vanuatu, some still wait.

These Pacific islanders are not alone in their wonderment and faith. For years we too have been waiting, with the sense that the luxuries of our desires are brought to our island by the undeserving and shared only hesitatingly. And now the ports of entry for our most covetable goods are weedy and abandoned. Last month, at the Chelsea Hotel in lower Manhattan, we discovered a cult of women who had shut themselves up in a large suite, strewn with cargo crates, forgotten luxury items, romance novels, archery paraphernalia, and junk food of an indeterminate age.

We walked in on this modern-day cargo cult performing strange torchlit rituals, waiting, yearning for something they had lost. But secretly, we thought, as we saw their suede and leather adornments, their metal plated jewelery, the silk dresses, and leather pouches, perhaps these cultists already had the luxuries they professed to be waiting for. The Hayden-Harnett Autumn/Winter 2009 collection was born...

Simple silhouettes, heavily grounded in a palette of dark neutrals, balanced with colors of ethereal mist and fog ... Cutout details offer a glimpse into the mysterious while hardware and woven accents evoke artisan craftsmanship. Totemic patchwork is created in textural suede and rich silks featuring our hand-drawn prints.

A Night with the Opera Company of Brooklyn

This is a very belated valentine's day post, but better late than never!
For Valentine's eve, Ben and I were invited to "L'Elisir d'Amore"...an opera
by Gaetano Donizetti presented and performed by the Opera Company of Brooklyn.

Not only was the opera fantastic, lively, and romantic...the setting was a romantic
and quite fantastic private apartment in Gramercy Park. Our friend, and Opera Company of Brookyn supporter, Yoko Moria-Stetson, invited us to this lovely evening that felt so special
and intimate.

The Opera Company of Brooklyn is directed by Jay Meetze, a wonderful person who just
wants to share the opera love and reintroduce opera in a more casual and personal environment. Ben and I were blown away by the performance...where else can you see opera performed three feet in front of you.

All performances are BYOB...sweet!
We will definitely get tickets for the next performance on 3/14 of "La Traviata".
