We all know that burning the candle at both ends is bad for our health, but the toxic repercussions of burning many of the candles on the market – at either end – is not as widely publicized. Most candles are made with paraffin, a waste product from the petroleum industry, and many contain lead, as well as artificial scents and other chemicals that have unromantic side effects. But you don’t have to forgo candlelit meals or baths, just ensure the candles you use are made with natural products so they won’t release toxins into your home.

Affordability

Natural candles can be expensive, but don’t buy bargain candles. Dollar store candles are the worst offenders for chemical and lead ingredients. If you want to use candles, spend a little more and get 100% beeswax or soy candles. Some soy candle makers say that longer burn times mean soy candles actually cost less than standard paraffin ones.

Cost savings

Candles are not a cost-effective option. The cost of buying two natural candles is likely to exceed the price of energy for a dimmed CFL over the same period of time. However, they offer a way to change your lighting without increasing energy consumption for occasions where you want something different.

Health & comfort

Candlelight can make a room cozy or a meal more intimate. Ensure you always follow fire safe candle practices. Keep your wicks trimmed and never leave a burning candle unattended. Paraffin candles can release soot, formaldehyde, lead, benzene and other chemicals. These chemicals pollute the surrounding air.

Environmental considerations

Use candles made locally from products available in North America, like soy and beeswax. As well as keeping the air in your home free from toxic chemicals, using products made nearer to your home saves on the carbon of shipping overseas.

What you need to know

Lead

The wicks of many candles contain lead, which is said to make them burn more slowly and evenly. When the candle burns, the lead is released as vapours and dust. Ingesting lead can affect behaviour, learning and memory and is particularly dangerous for children and pregnant women.
Burning leaded candles in a home once a week can release enough lead into the indoor environment that a child’s lead levels could exceed federal health standards.
Tea lights, pillar candles and candles that melt into puddles are the most likely to contain lead. Any candles from dollars stores, especially those made in China, are particularly suspect.
Health Canada advises that you test candles you already own to see whether the wick contains lead: remove wax from the tip of the wick, separate the fibre strands to see if there is a metallic core, and if so, rub this metallic core on a piece of white paper. If it leaves a gray mark on the paper, then the metallic core is probably lead. Discard any candles that test positive.
There is currently no ban on leaded candles in Canada.

Other Toxins

Paraffin candles can also release formaldehyde, benzene and soot as they burn.
Scented candles and soft candles are more likely to release oily black soot than other candles.
To see if your candles are polluting the indoor environment, check for oily deposits on your walls, window coverings and light switches or electrical sockets in areas near to where you burn candles.
Avoid scented candles and petroleum based gel candles as these are likely to produce soot.
Cutting your wicks and keeping candles out of drafts will reduce soot production and make your candles more fire safe.

Alternatives

100% beeswax candles are non-toxic and are said to actually clean the air of dust. Watch out for imitations that use only a percentage of beeswax.
Soy is another option for longer burning candles that don’t pollute the air.
Most North American-made candles don’t contain lead and candles from IKEA are all lead-free.

Fire Safety

Never leave a lit candle unattended.
Candles with long or multiple wicks are an increased fire risk because the candles burn hotter and a taller flame may be blown by breezes. Keep your wicks trimmed to make them safer.
Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
Across Canada the number of fires caused by candles has increased in recent years. Don’t add to the statistics. Be fire safe.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of product: Candlsense Warmers

Units: About 730,000

Manufacturer: Provo Craft & Novelty Inc., of Spanish Fork, Utah

Hazard: The internal heating element of the candle warmer can detach and melt the bottom of its plastic casing, which can in turn ignite or scorch the surface on which the candle warmer is placed, posing a fire hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Provo Craft has received 11 reports of incidents in which the heating elements detached, including two fires and nine incidents of property scorching. One consumer reported a blistered finger.

Product Description: This recall involves the Candlsense warmers with product codes ranging from YD0629 through YD0652 and YD0701 through YD0708. The candle warmers measure about 4 ¾ inches in diameter. The heating plate is black and the surrounding area is white plastic. “Provo Craft & Novelty Candle Warmer Air Freshener Model: WCY-8888” and the product code are embossed on the underside of the warmer.

Sold at: Wal-Mart and other retailers nationwide from August 2006 through October 2007 for between $5 and $10.

What is Aromatherapy?

The solution to dangerous scented candles? Essential Oil Aromatherapy Soy Candles

Like most air fresheners, many scented candles contain and release phthalates, potentially harmful chemicals that have been linked to the disruption of hormonal systems and other health problems in people exposed to them. Burning candles can also emit small amounts of acetaldehyde, formaldehyde and naphthalene, organic chemicals that are also potentially harmful and that can leave nasty black soot deposits on floors and other surfaces. According to Pamela Lundquist of the nonprofit Children’s Health Environmental Coalition (CHEC), this black soot deposit “is primarily made up of elemental carbon, but may also contain phthalates and volatile organic compounds like benzene and toluene, which can cause cancer and neurological damage.” Children can easily ingest these chemicals if their hands have been wandering and end up in their mouths. The chemicals can lodge deep in the lungs, disrupting the lower respiratory tract, exacerbating existing problems like asthma, and potentially causing other longer term breathing problems.

A Warning from the National Candle Association Regarding Lotion Candles

Lotion candles are designed to be burned until a sizeable wax pool forms, and then blown out.

Consumers can then dip their fingers in the melted wax and apply it to the skin as a warm lotion.

Be aware that lotion candles are cosmetics, and thus are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They must conform to FDA ingredient restrictions, and be labeled in accordance with FDA regulations.

Many candle companies that manufacture lotion candles are not aware of these regulations and may include harmful components. All colorants used in lotion candles must meet FDA approval, and fragrances should meet IFRA (International Fragrance Association) guidelines for cosmetics applied to the skin.

Companies that manufacture, purchase or distribute lotion candles are urged to obtain and follow the FDA’s Cosmetic Labeling Manual and the federal regulations concerning cosmetic ingredients and labeling (21 CFR parts 701 and 740).

The National Candle Association (NCA) is extremely concerned that consumers may not understand the difference between these unique “lotion” candles and traditional candles, and may attempt to place their fingers in the hotter wax pool of a typical candle, thereby subjecting themselves to possibly severe skin burns. The NCA is also very concerned that consumers may attempt to place their fingers in the wax pool while the flame is still lit.

How To Keep Your Soy Pillar Candles Looking Like New!

Soy Pillar Candles are easily maintained with hugging, to keep your pillar flat topped and burning evenly:

Burn your pillars out to within 1/4 inch of the outer edge, otherwise you risk having your Soy Pillar Candle "tunneling" (burning a small tunnel straight down the middle of the candle). It is recommended that your Soy Pillar Candle should be burned for 1 hour per inch in diameter - thus a 4" wide pillar should burn for about 4 hours before extinguishing, and a 2" Soy Pillar Candle should burn for about 2 hours.
A glass or metal ring device called a candle ring or candle follower can be used to automatically hug your Soy Pillar Candle, using gravity to pull the ring down evenly across the softened wax. The device is placed on top of the candle for the duration of the candle’s use, and also gives the candle a more elegant appearance.
Instead of using a candle ring, your Soy Pillar Candles can be manually hugged:

Extinguish the candle flame. Use caution while the candle’s melt pool will still be liquid and hot.
Place the Soy Pillar Candle on a flat, level surface. You may want to first lay out a few sheets of newspaper or waxed paper to catch any spills, especially if the candle contains dye. Gently press the sidewalls in toward the wick, by applying pressure at one point on the side of the candle and rotating the candle, pressing in evenly as you rotate. As the candle’s sidewall is pressed in, the melt pool will "rise". The objective is to curl the sides of the candle in slightly higher than the melt pool to be melted the next time the candle is lit.
If the Soy Candle has tunneled, or burned unevenly across the top, it may be necessary to trim off the excess sidewall above the melt pool in order to begin again with a flat top pillar. Use a gently warmed knife to carefully trim to roughly 1/2 inch above the melt pool, and then hug as indicated above.

Here are some other tips to keep in mind when using Soy Pillar Candles:

Place each candle on a level and sturdy surface. The sticky candle dots included with 2" Soy Pillar Candles can be used to help stabilize the candle by placing three dots on the bottom of each pillar close to the edge of the candle (trim if necessary). Press firmly against the candle plate or holder to secure the candle in place.
The first time you burn the Soy Pillar Candle may be the most important in prolonging the life of the candle. Allow a full melting pool to form. When the edge gets to about 1/2" thickness, blow it out to set the memory. This will help to prevent the top of the soy candle from melting unevenly in subsequent burns. Wait until the melted pool has set before relighting. It's very important to never burn soy pillars more than 4 hours at a time.
Do not place Soy Pillar Candles on any surface that may stain (wood, fabric, or plastic) as it may leave an oily mark, and if dyed, the color will transfer from solid wax. Use a candle plate with raised sides or a glass hurricane candleholder to contain any spilled wax in the event of a leak. Dispose of the candle when it burns down to one inch of the base.
Do not place dyed Soy Pillar Candles in direct sunlight to prevent the color from fading.

If you are considering purchasing soy candles, aromatherapy or unscented, read the label carefully. Unless the manufacturer indicates that the wax is 100% soy, and the fragrance only pure and undiluted essential oils, be aware that the product likely contains petroleum by-products.

As soy candles gain popularity, more candle makers are adding them to their product lines. But, as I have learned from various online candle making forums, many manufacturers are actually utilizing a blend of soy and paraffin waxes (in some cases, using less than 25% soy wax) and marketing them as soy candles. While a search on “soy paraffin blend” yields many results for candle wax suppliers, there are very few candle makers that market their candles as being made with a soy/paraffin blend.

Judging from the posts I’ve read, I would assume the reasons for this include cost-cutting, minimizing frosting, preventing color-fade, adding rigidity and shine to pillars and votives, and improving scent-throw. Adding paraffin may be a quick-fix for these issues, but many are also resolved simply by employing proper manufacturing techniques and in my opinion are not worth misleading customers and compromising their health.

Unfortunately, the same is true of most aromatherapy candles, which are marketed as essential oil candles, but in most cases contain only a small amount of essential oil diluted with synthetic fragrance oil. If a scented wax product is labeled as containing ‘fragrance’ that is synthetic. Unless it is labeled as containing ‘pure essential oil’ be aware that it could still contain petroleum products. Some essential oils that can be synthetically duplicated include: lavender, cinnamon, vanilla, vetiver, frankincense, myrrh, sandalwood, orange, tangerine, lime, mint, and basil.

In one candle making forum discussion on this topic, a participant living in the southern U.S. commented on being surrounded by “the worst air quality in the nation” due to damaged oil refineries burning off fuel, saying “so one ‘soy’ candle is definitely not going to make an impact”. The idealist in me would like to think that choosing to use our voting dollars on renewable resources and alternatives to fossil fuels and their by-products might someday lead to better air quality, around obsolete fuel refineries, and around the world.

Triple Scented Soy Candles - Sounds Like a Good Idea in Theory, But They Are Hazardous to Your Health!

If you are a candle-enthusiast, you have probably noticed that some candle manufacturers claim their paraffin or soy candles are 'triple-fragranced' or 'triple scented'. This usually applies to synthetically-scented candles. The term is loosely based on very old industry standards of using 1/2 ounce of fragrance oil to 1 pound of paraffin wax. 'Triple-scented' candles are probably manufactured with 1 1/2 ounces of fragrance oil per 1 pound of wax.

When it comes to scented candles - especially those made with essential oils - less IS more, and here’s why:

There is a limit to how much fragrance can be added to candle waxes before the wax becomes over-saturated, and soy wax is even more temperamental. Exceeding the limit of fragrance that a wax can hold can cause the fragrance oil to seep out of the wax, which is not only messy, but can also cause dangerous flare-ups.

Using too much fragrance or essential oil can actually inhibit the scent 'throw' of the candle. As the candle burns, the wick can become clogged by the excess oil, causing the candle to go out, or impeding the flame which will generate less heat than is required for the scent to dissipate. The excess burning fragrance oil is also likely to cause more sooting, and in some cases can emit a fuel-smell.

How to Keep Your Handmade Soy Candles Looking Their Very Best!

It is important to keep the following tips in mind to preserve the quality of your handmade soy candles:

Keep your soy candles out of direct sunlight. LuminEssent Candles are made of natural ingredients, but dyed candles in deep shades do include a small amount of UV inhibitor (unless otherwise requested) to slow the fading of color. Leaving an aromatherapy soy candle in direct sunlight may also cause the essential oils to evaporate.
When you burn your container soy candle for the first time, it is very important to burn it long enough to let the entire top of the candle become liquified. The same is true of pillar candles, which should only be burned for about an hour initially, and allowed to cool. This technique will activate the “memory”, and prevent a tunneling effect by first forming the melting pool outward, then down. Don't forget to give your new candle a good start!
To insure your soy candles burn at an optimal rate, it is suggested to trim the wick to approximately 1/4 inch. This is especially important for pillar candles, since a long wick will curl to one side, shifting the melting pool away from the center of the candle, which may cause venting and leaks. The easiest way to trim your wick is to turn your cooled candle upside down and then clip the wick. This way, the burned wick will fall out, preventing the residual wick from flaring up in future burns.

How to Reuse your Soy Candle Jars!

Most people do not realize that, unlike paraffin, soy wax candle jars are easily cleaned out for recycling. Soy wax candles burn leaving less wax residue and harmful soot than paraffin wax. Your soy candles can be burned until about 1/4 of an inch of the candle remains.

The remaining soy wax is easily and completely cleaned out so that the container can be repurposed. Just set the container in a small sauce pan, half full of water. Warm the water over low heat. When the remaining wax has liquefied in the bottom of the container, use a potholder or oven mitts to lift the jar out of the water, and pour the soy candle wax out into a container you intend to throw away, like a take-out food container (don’t worry – soy wax is biodegradable!). Wipe the remaining wax out with a paper towel and wash the jar with regular dish soap and warm water. Dry out the jar and find a new use for it. It’s that simple.
