What, no humidity!

I have been a bad, bad blogger, what can I say, but oh well. I have been too busy out taking photos (biz and personal) to worry about blogging, life is busy, something had to fall to the wayside and it wasn't going to be photo taking or my family!

The weather has been lovely, almost San Diego-esque, of late. However, along with the weather change, my allergies have gone crazy...coral dust maybe? There was a typhoon by the Phillapines, so we did have one weekend of rain and wind, so no photo shoot that weekend...

Apart from that no crazy hideous dripping humidity. Great for my electricity bill and for an early morning photo session...in colour...

I keep thinking that there must be some kind of mistake. Surely this weather cannot really be. I think that Sunday was one of the loveliest days. So lovely that I was at Araha Beach three times. First at 7am for a photo shoot...
Then to walk the chihuahua we are looking after, along with Harry! What a sight, a chihuahua and a pitbull!
Then, got a phone call from Annya that she was in the area, gathered the kids up again and off we went again. This day was too nice to not be out.

April is enjoying being a Junior in Girl Scouts. Both the kids love school and their teachers. Albert is still gone with the wind. Got myself a fish eye lens so been having fun with that. I only waited 13 years to replace my old one that broke!
The seawall (with texture added)...this photo also won me a little prize! Better than a kick in the teeth hey!

Kay and Chad get 'romanticle'

It was funny, because when Kay and Chad got married in Bali, the photographer kept saying to them, 'get romanticle', so we had a good laugh every time I told them to get romanticle during the shoot. They did a very good job of it, I might add!

I Heart Faces - Excited

This week over on I Heart Faces it is EXCITED week, as soon as I saw the category I knew the photo that represented excitement for me...

This was from a shoot a while back and it all started off with nice clean clothes and calm expressions, until that is we came to the beach area and those kids saw the ocean and it was all over (but just the beginning for me heee heee). They had so much fun, I had so much fun, it was a great morning of high energy excitement. I seriously ached for days after with all the bending and moving around. Look at the clouds in the background, about 10 mins later there was a massive thunderstorm, but by then we were long gone!

My schedule for photo shoots for the remainder of 2009 is as follows:

Monday through Friday: On location shoots start at approx 0830 (8:30am). Newborn (if indoor) shoots can start a bit later if you like.
Weekend shoots are very limited due to a deployed husband AKA the babysitter. If you have to have a weekend shoot, please still contact me and we will see what can be arranged.

Which edit?

Once upon a time, which was a time long long long ago, you took a photo with a roll of 24 BW film, you developed the film. Maybe made a stick with a little funny shaped shape on the end. Swished it about during enlarger time (dodge and burn). Sometimes flipped the light during developing for some crazy random effect. Practiced with timing for some more contrasty images. Stunk of chemicals at 2am while the kitchen table was covered in damp prints.
But...
That was then and this is now!
Now, post production is a whole new fun ball game.
So, I have one image and have done 3 edits and I like them all.

Which one do you prefer? Because, I can mess around and do a whole lot more if none of these tickle your fancy. heee heee!

Hong Kong to Okinawa

Wayyyyyyy before the summer I was contacted by Maggie and Mark. They wanted pre-wedding photos taken. When I heard the word photo shoot and wedding together, I was a little apprehensive. Weddings are not really on my agenda. I have been contacted to do a couple and have had to graciously say no (unless I can tag team with another photographer).

But, apparently pre-wedding destination photography is quite common in Hong Kong. Yes, they are from Hong Kong and I think I can thank Google for them finding me! I suppose it is similar to engagement/couple photography, so I was definitely up for the challenge and the chance to do this shoot.
It was different to my normal photo shoots in that it was multiple locations more in the North of the island. Maggie and Mark had all the locations worked out before they even arrived on island! It was HOT, but we got some great shots, I think!

I have so many shots I love, but here's just a sample...Mark giving his beautiful bride to be a loving kiss...

They wanted some typical Okinawan backdrops, so we found some windmills...

I Heart Faces - contemplative and pets

Well, it's been a long time that I've been to I Heart Faces what with the trip to London and been a procrastinator since being back, but I thought I would play along today even though I should be going to bed! Reason below, thanks Hayley!

I took this photo of my friend's daughter a while back, but when I saw the theme, this photo instantly sprang to mind...she was busy examining some grass or something nature-y! So cute!

I just did a newborn shoot on Sunday and this cat was very interested in what was going on so I turned the camera on her! She has the most amazing eyes. They are massive and hypnotising. Hayley, the Mum, emailed me to see if I got any good ones of the cat to put on I Heart Faces! Even my own clients have got my back and get me motivated!!! When I saw the people theme, I thought about the above photo! But, honestly, this photo doesn't even do the cat justice to how crazy her eyes actually were in reality!...But here she is anyways. Meow!

Well, well, well. I was wondering if I was ever going to be able to get back into the land of blogging. Call it writer's block, creative energy block, or procrastination...it seems to be over. I think editing photos and going along to a Photographer's meeting this morning kick started me back up. So, that's a good thing. I have a bunch of blog posts, but will start up with a recent newborn shoot, following on from Mary's maternity shoot. The wonders of pregnancy and childbirth still awe me. Baby D is here, he is 5 weeks now, but we still managed to get some lovely sleepy baby shots...

He's a handsome fellow isn't he? And look at his lovely eyes...He looks like such a little boy, which I suppose is a good job since that's what he is!

Mum and Dad got to spend some quiet moments with him in colour...

and black and white...oh, the wonders of the digital world!

Dad and son chilling together until the prickly chin of dad was enough for baby D! But, they just fit together like yin and yang...

Mum and baby also get some snuggle love time too...

All in all, it was a wonderful session and congratulations to Mary and Don, what a cute little boy you have there, enjoy him :o)

Eye Love London...

Been buzzing around London for 10 days now. Opps more like 21 days since this post has been sitting in the draft folder. Poor old blog. Been catching up with old friends and family. Made many trips on the trains and buses which the kids love. Went up to St. James' park, horse guards parade, past the London Eye and Big Ben. The whole tourist deal. The queue to get on the London Eye went further than my eye could see. I have been out of a real city for too long, I was just amazed by the crowds (not in such a good way, wayyyyy too busy for my liking!). Been visiting parks, reminiscing with people, eating yummy food, visiting parks, reminiscing with people, eating more yummy food, continue chant 'til end of trip...
Here's some of the kids on a trip to Kew Gardens (it's a royal botanical garden!). Love it there...

We have Loubie in his new (very appropriate for a child of mine) t-shirt., Miranda: April's best friend from Kindergarten to 2nd grade in California and she now lives in England. April: say no more. Jodie: My cousin Michelle's daughter. She was born 3 mths after Loubie. Michelle and I used to go to water aerobics when we were pregnant and straight after go and get some fish 'n chips!
I love this one of the 2 cousins...wonder if she is trying to strangle him, sometimes I feel the same way, Jodie LOL

I am going to edit it when I get home, give it that extra bit of oomph!

As an 'outsider' these days, here are a few observations I have made about London...
1. Walking into my Mum and Dad's flat I felt like Alice in wonderland after she'd drunk the grow potion. Everything seemed very 'cozy'.
2. It's busy (well, duh), but it really is very busy. All the time! I know that's a silly thing to say, it is London...!

3. My Mum wasn't lying when she said there has really been no summer. It's cold (for my sub tropical used to weather body). But, I still love London. Forever!
4. It is expensive here. Very. But people know that. But I am quite shocked at times. For instance: You can have the 950 sq. ft loft apt (in the back) for about 595 pounds (approx. 1 million dollars) or you can opt for the cheaper resale council flat for about 260 pounds (that'll be just $500,000, please!)

5. The fuel of London is alcohol! Champagne bars in the mall, the local supermarket giving out wine (red and white) samples on a Saturday morning (hair of the dog anyone!) and packed pubs!
6. The supermarkets are far superior to any I have seen in the States. I am going to be gutted to leave the whole aisles dedicated to yoghurt, or the whole aisle dedicated to cheese to go back to a couple of pots of yoghurt and about 5 types of cheese. Even the local petrol station sells smoked salmon. NO JOKE!

7. On a similar note: a lot of the foods, everyday stuff, is labeled 'without preservatives, artificial colours or flavours'.

I am wondering why American food is not, even though some of the stuff I am seeing is the same brands as the preserved, coloured and flavoured crap the American supermarkets sell (I won't even start on the commissary. Sigh). What is going on here?
Check out these natural colours...and I realize this is sweets (sugar) but I am talking on all kinds of food...

8. Everyone looks really unique, different, somewhat eccentric. And that's a good thing!
As I get used to being here and become assimilated back into London life, all of this becomes less obvious. I think I will definitely get a culture shock going 'home' though.

I have always had a camera by my side, taking photos of anything and everything. To be honest, I have not taken my DSLR out too much. Chasing 2 kids around London's busy streets sometimes wants me to just take the point and shoot and that's fine with me! But, here's a couple of arty farty ones I took on one of the first trips...

Some sneak peeks...

I have had a LOT of shoots lately so I thought I would show some sneak peeks of the ones I haven't posted about. It might take me a while to get the blog posts up: what with the kids being off, preparing for travel, editing photos and and all that jazz. Plus, clients like to relax and take their time choosing their images, I don't want to rush them just because I am in blogging mode!
So, without further ado, here are some of the amazingly fun shoots I have gotten to do recently...

A horse loving, funny, cool family...with one son off back to Uni and one daughter off to horse camp (can I say jealous!) for the summer, we needed to get this shoot done!...we got some great fun shots (including some lovely individual/couple/sunset shots) but I wanted to share this traditional BW for the sneek peek. (This was the one weather rescheduled shoot, we were scheduled for the morning, but it was 'pissing down' so we managed the late afternoon listening to thunder!)...

Capturing newlyweds...This couple just got married in Bali, have great friends who bought them a gift certificate for a shoot and are ready to PCS. Another shoot that we were lucky enough to beat the rain for!...Wait 'til you see the graffiti scuba man shot!...

Pre wedding shots for a couple from Hong Kong...very common thing in Hong Kong, for couples to get a shoot way before the wedding...this was multi location...from Murasaki Mura to Zampa lighthouse and everything in between!

A sunshiny start to a new day...Baby M is ONE!...this was my last shoot until September and I was glad to fit them in for their early morning shoot (so early, the park gates were still closed!)...

Seems like the other day that I was up at the castle ruins, in the sweltering heat, photographing a little two year old. Well, Little Miss E is back, ready for the big three! Wonder what kind of birthday cake she will have? Well, not a problem since Mum Marisa is one half of cakeMEone...need a cake, give them a holler!

It's back...

the humidity that is...
With the humid Okinawa summers comes the very hot sunsets...or should I say right after the sun has set.
This one is from Sunday night...

I don't have a view of the sea as there is a building in the way (but I can go to my roof for a great view). I usually see this yummy pink/purple/orange light coming into the apartment and that's when I say 'Kids, let's go to the roof, I have to check the sunset'. If it's a really good one, I will end up running back down, grabbing the camera and running across the street!

On Saturday, the kids played dress up all morning...

until they got so LOUD, I had to go out. So, the kids and I went to the zoo and wonder museum. We quickly visited (it was HOT) all the animals...the bats with the massive bolitas (April's words), the rainbow butt monkey (Loubie's words) and the very close hippos...

This is very close. I only had my 50mm lens, so you can see I am not far away, in fact, I touched his nose! I just had to!

This is the 'fish head rainbow hair' doll I made inside the craft area of the wonder museum...

Talking of crafts, Loubie has been doing some culture classes at his school, here he is with his Star Festival bamboo. He's very happy and proud of it...although he looks so serious in these photos!

I am not sure what made me post all these random things, just wanted to do something personal. Plus, it reminds me that life in the moment is special. Sometimes I forget that. I wanted to say that I am thinking of my friend Shelia right now, she just lost a brother...you are in my thoughts, Shelia...

I heart Faces - Wedding Bells

I was lucky enough to photograph a Hong Kong couple's pre-wedding shoot a couple of weekends ago, so I am entering it into this week's 'I heart Faces' category...which is 'wedding bells'...

It was a hot evening here in Okinawa (what night isn't these days!). We managed to catch a real nice sunset too...This is my first (and probably only 'wedding'). I love this moment I have captured, it's very real. To me, at least. :o)

Kelly and the Great Typhoon...

Kelly, hubby Joe and gorgeous honey child Gabe are such a sweet family, I was so glad to get to photograph them connecting...

and enjoying their last days on Okinawa...

If you are on Okinawa, you may know Kelly, for two reasons:
If you read Okinawa Hai, she was until recently the TO EAT editor. Kelly's family are leaving the island heading Stateside very soon.
Kelly is also a children's book author. I thought it was really cool when she told my she was writing a childrens book about two Shisas. I love Shisas. Even before coming to Okinawa, I began to get obsessed with them. Now, I take them for granted because they are everywhere.

Just like the beautiful East China Sea...I try not to take that for granted.

and it was cool to photograph G's recreated traditional Korean birthday table...

Apparently, the food/item he chooses represents his future. I think Kelly told me he chose cheerios?! Whatever he chose, he looks so noble, doesn't he?...

April couldn't believe that her 'famous photographer Mum' (yeah, her words, she actually thinks I am famous LOL) knows a 'real live famous writer' (what she wants to be when she grows up...well this month anyway!)!!! Kids, you have to love 'em...
I had a great time the few times we hung out Kelly and the shoot was a blast, I hope you all laugh long and hard...

Bisy Backson

It's been a busy few months to say the least. School's out, Albert's redeployed and time is flying.

The kids and I spent 4 days up at Okuma with our friends and their kids.
Sixteen of us in a 7 bedroom condo! It rained the whole first day, but we had good times and the second day we got to the beach. Some of us went jet skiing and later in the afternoon took a boat out for some snorkeling.

We didn't see too many fish, but we all had a blast jumping off the end of the boat. Even Carrie's mother. I always say if the Mums and Grandmas are last in the water when the kids have gotten out, then you have some very cool Mums and grandmas! ha ha

Thank you for everyone who has made the last couple of months so busy for me, I have been all booked out. I feel like Toguchi beach has become my second home (not bad, huh!). Thank you also, weather, for the pure luck I have had with missing the rain!

I will be shortly (finally) doing some traveling...LONDON, here I come! I haven't been 'home' for 6 years. Lewis was 9 mths old when we left back to San Diego. April still remembers everything though. But, she has lost her British accent :o(

Mary Maternity - Okinawa Photographer

Mary is eight months preggo with her first baby, so off we went to the beach...Mary, hubby Don and one lovely baby belly...It was another one of those is it or isn't it going to rain down kind of days, but it turned into a beautiful evening...

We got some of the gorgeous Okinawa turquoise sea in the background...

and some 'have to have' shots...

It was a real tropical feel shoot...

I love it when I can get some flare in just the right spot...

And then of course, it was time for a sunset silhouette of the most gorgeous of female forms...

Jenny builds refined bodies - her own! - Okinawa Photographer

Jenny is one brave woman...she just spent many months training for the 2009 Pacific Muscle Classic figure building competition. That is long months of working out and not gorging on chocolate and the like. Plus, lots of other stuff besides. It's no joke. WOW. I need to get to the gym!...

Now, I have to say that when Jenny first emailed me asking about a shoot, I replied and asked her if it was (ice) figure skating LOL. She obviously didn't think I was too crazy as we went ahead and did the shoot a few weeks later. It was one of those mornings where it had been seriously raining (men!) all night, the sky looked ominous in parts, but it was 2 days before the competition. We either did the shoot now, or we didn't do it at all...Glad we did as we got some really nice shots...and of course the rain held off for us!

I have to say (touch wood) I have been really pretty lucky with my shoots of late. it really is hard to schedule shoots in the rainy season especially when the shoot has to be completed in a timely fashion, but I have gotten them all done with a few reschedules here and there!

The show is over, but Jenny could always kickstart a modeling career...

I heart Faces - Boys

This week's 'I heart faces' is all about the boys. Well, I love this photo I took of Loubie (AKA Lewis AKA the Snugglebubble AKA pain in my bum ha ha).
He had been in the sea and on the water slide all day, it was his 5th birthday and I just grabbed this shot. And it came out just as he is, if you know what I mean? He's got some smiling (quarter) Irish eyes and the smile is all his. I can look at this in 20 years and I will be right there back at this time saying that's my boy!

Heather and the Haunted Hotel - Okinawa Photographer

Answer: Charlie and the boots belong to one fantastic teenager named Heather (nickname: Hayner). We headed up the the haunted hotel for her senior shoot. It was quite creepy up there, it was just the 2 of us and I haven't been there for a while, so it felt like a crazy adventure. We had a fabulous time and the rain held off for us (Never trust an Okinawan weather report). Plus, I got to see Heather's billion watt smile a number of times!

I got to know Heather through her equally fantastic mother, Dasha. Dasha is one of those people you meet and you hope you will know them for a long time. We have a lot in common: we walk to the beat of our own drum (a rebel as hubby would say), we LOVE horses and we just love an adventure...Looks like Heather is a chip off the 'old' block...

Dasha had asked my about photos a long time ago. She thought me, Heather and the haunted hotel would be a perfect match and I have to agree: it went great...I just LOVE this wall we found...

One of my favourites from my Mum and Dad's visit here (haven't really got to any others yet...life is flying by...)...April looking at my Mum's locket of her photo. I think she was about 18 mths old. There is also a lock of April's hair and the locket is held together with some blu tack since the clasp broke. LOL.

I just love it when I am doing a shoot and something so cool happens in my images. Here we are at the end of the shoot, splish splashing around and we get an image like this...

I just LOVE it! I was like a little kid in a sweet shop!
Hayley and Tommy were such a fun couple to photograph. It was a real international affair...me (British), Hayley (New Zealander) and Tommy (Japanese).

Hayley said it was OK if I did a blog post about the shoot if I told everyone how cool New Zealand is and that they should have beaten England in the rugby world cup (that's American football without padding LOL).
