I'm not too sore but I am feeling the weight I've packed on over the last month or so of being on the road. It's the price I pay for loving food a bit too much and living in Bangkok doesn't help. </span> <span style="font-family:arial;">Another bonus of living in Bangkok is that we are always hosting out-of-town guests that come for a multiple of reasons. Most recently Prof. Santos stopped by while on vacation from the Emirates on his way to Brazil. A real pleasure to have him visit our class.<br /><br />A few things I would like to bring up on the blog to keep people in the know. I've made some changes as far as the sourcing for t-shirt production so prices should come down from what I had originally quoted. I won't give the price just yet cause I think I've spoken too early and don't want to confuse people more than I already have. I am working towards having them ready by mid-August. Cross my fingers. I have a lot of t-shirt ideas that relate to BJJ/MMA/Muay Thai but those will come out slowly. Besides wanting to promote the scene, my goal is to raise enough money to build a full website for BJJ-ASIA. Right now it's just me at the helm but ultimately I'd like all of you to have more direct involvement with the content of the site. Especially with the calendar as I see more and more need for real-time input. When that happens, I can then say that the site truly reflects the community.<br /><br />Still trying to get in touch with all the black-belts that I know are out there. Thank you to those who've already taken part. Spread the word! Help promote your coach/instructor and school!<br /><br />This coming weekend we have the </span><a href="http://www.bjj-asia.com/2008/05/2008-java-submission-championship.html"><span style=";font-family:arial;font-size:100%;" ><span style="white-space: pre;font-size:130%;" ><b>JAVA <span>SUBMISSION</span> <span>CHAMPIONSHIP 2008</span></b></span></span></a> <span style=";font-family:arial;font-size:100%;" >on<b> July 26</b> at the <b>Kridosono Sports Hall </b>in <b>Jogjakarta</b></span><span style="font-family:arial;">.</span> <span style="font-family:arial;">Always an intense and action packed event and best of luck to all the competitors.<br /><br />The <a href="http://www.bjj-asia.com/2008/06/thailand-bjjgrappling-open-sept-27-28.html"><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">FBT THAILAND BJJ/GRAPPLING OPEN</span></span></a> is calling for all <span style="font-weight: bold;">female competitors</span>. Show your support, get involved and compete! Come out and have a great time, let's make this event a fun one to be a part of. Taking time from his vacation, he stopped by to watch class and answer a few questions with BJJ-ASIA. Having already interviewed Prof. Santos earlier this year, we took a few moments to catch up with what he's been working on.<br /><br />I will preface the video by apologizing for my shaky hand as I had just finished training, still wearing my soaked gi and not prepared as I would have liked to have been. Even so, it's always great to have a few words from those with such a rich background in jiu-jitsu and still leading the sport in other parts of the world.<br /><br />A special thanks to Prof. Santos for his time and Pedro for putting us in the know. -Luke<br /><br /><object height="344" width="425"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Z7rn1qEQ8tU&hl=en&fs=1"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Z7rn1qEQ8tU&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" height="344" width="425"></embed></object><br /><a href="http://emiratesone.blogspot.com/"><span style="font-size:130%;"><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">EMIRATES BJJ BLOG</span></span></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.bjj-asia.com/2008/01/carlao-santos-abu-dhabi.html"><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">PREVIOUS INTERVIEW</span></span></a><br /></span>LUKEnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2456765418480247631.post-37100097111013686292008-07-18T08:21:00.000-07:002008-07-19T01:18:19.688-07:00NIKO HAN<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://bp3.blogger.com/_xRN063YbHqY/SIC2Yzk2SVI/AAAAAAAABso/sGltp2k-ZOE/s1600-h/sidebar.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_xRN063YbHqY/SIC2Yzk2SVI/AAAAAAAABso/sGltp2k-ZOE/s400/sidebar.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5224376105027651922" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">NAME:</span> Niko Han</span> <span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><br />INSTRUCTOR:</span> Marc Laimon</span> <span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><br />ORIGINAL TEAM:</span> Rickson Gracie</span> <span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><br />SCHOOL IN SEA:</span> Synergy Jiu-Jitsu</span> <span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><br />WEBSITE:</span> </span><a style="font-family: arial; font-weight: bold;" href="http://synergyjiujitsu.com/" target="_blank">http://synergyjiujitsu.com/</a> <span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><br />CONTACT INFO:</span> </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="mailto:nikohan@gmail.com" target="_blank">nikohan@gmail.com</a> <span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><br />HOMETOWN:</span> Indonesia</span> <span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><br />ACCOMPLISHMENTS:</span><br />1st place South-East Grappling Games<br />1st place Desert Quest<br />2nd place Grapplers Quest<br />1st Place Pan Am Submission Wrestling<br />2nd place National No Gi<br />2nd place Rickson Gracie Int'l<br />1st place Joe Moreira's De Brasil Jiu-Jitsu Championships<br /><br /></span><span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> PERSONAL HISTORY:</span><br /></span><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: arial;"> I started with Rickson Gracie in Los Angeles, then with Marc Laimon, Ethan Milius and Marcus Vinicius at Beverly Hills Jiu-Jitsu Club, then with Jean-Jacques Machado and Eddie Bravo in Tarzana, then Nova Uniao and Cobra Kai in Las Vegas with Marc Laimon.</span><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"><br /></span><span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> TIME OF STAY:</span> Permanent</span> <span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><br />SPONSORS:</span> Oakley (</span><a style="font-family: arial; font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.oakleyindonesia.com/" target="_blank">http://www.oakleyindonesia.<wbr>com/</a><span style="font-family:arial;">)</span>LUKEnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2456765418480247631.post-15813716567449172672008-07-16T21:54:00.000-07:002008-07-19T01:16:25.715-07:00BANGKOK BJJ<span style="font-family:arial;">I thought I'd make a short announcement on a modest space that I've opened here in Bangkok, Thailand. We have a weekly open-mat session every Saturday morning from 11am-1pm. I say modest because it's just enough room for 2-3 pairs to roll at a given time. If you're interested in taking privates with one of the resident instructors (EMAC or BFC), the space is available but notice needs to be given to me first. Because we don't offer any formal instruction at this point we just offer a space to train/drill/learn.</span> <span style="font-family:arial;">Everyone is welcome regardless of school or rank, just give us a heads up if you're from out of town. There are 3 gate-keepers besides myself so when I am away on business there should be someone to open shop.<br /><br />I imagine a lot of academies out there started like this, a group of friends wanting to push each to improve and expand their skills in jiu-jitsu. We hope to take root in a similar fashion to promote the sport that we love.<br /><br />-Luke<br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://bp0.blogger.com/_xRN063YbHqY/SH7ROmPiBGI/AAAAAAAABsg/O87TjBTuSgM/s1600-h/PHOENIX_LOGO_label.gif"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_xRN063YbHqY/SH7ROmPiBGI/AAAAAAAABsg/O87TjBTuSgM/s400/PHOENIX_LOGO_label.gif" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5223842666510419042" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;" >LOCATION:</span><span style="font-family:arial;"> SUKHUMVIT SOI ONE, BANGKOK THAILAND</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;" >DATE/TIME: </span><span style="font-family:arial;">EVERY SATURDAY OPEN-MAT, 11AM-1PM</span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;" ><br /></span><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><span style="font-family:Arial;"></span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-style: italic;font-family:arial;" >Out-of-town guests, please contact e-mail below prior to arrival.</span><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;" >CONTACT:</span><span style="font-family:arial;"> bjjasia@gmail.com<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">WEB:<br /><a href="http://www.bkkbjj.blogspot.com/">www.bkkbjj.blogspot.com</a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=18165017858">http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=18165017858</a><br /></span></span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;" >NOTICE:</span><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-style: italic;">By training at Bangkok BJJ, you accept the responsibility that BJJ/martial arts is a contact sport and the establishment and it's partners are not liable for any injury caused.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Because there is no formal instruction we do not recommend complete beginners to attend and would suggest contacting one of the established schools in the Bangkok area. Most recently within Hong Kong and China, several have made the move from both Brazil and the US to teach. So while this blog is limited in some ways, I thought I would create a new category tentatively titled, "RESIDENT BLACK-BELTS". It's done now and I will be stationed here in Bangkok for the next couple of months which is a nice thing to know. I love traveling regardless if it's for work or leisure but it's also nice to be home. I can finally get back to training and to posting on the site.</span> <span style="font-family:arial;"><br /><br />Most recently I was in Hong Kong for a quick business seminar that took the majority of my two day stay. I did get to visit Kowloon BJJ to observe their no-gi class but was not prepared to train. I took some pics which I'll probably post tomorrow once settled in. </span> <span style="font-family:arial;"><br /><br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_xRN063YbHqY/SHrLS_ZiAWI/AAAAAAAABrA/izO6VSFaPmw/s1600-h/xandinho_aramaki.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_xRN063YbHqY/SHrLS_ZiAWI/AAAAAAAABrA/izO6VSFaPmw/s400/xandinho_aramaki.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5222710245006115170" border="0" /></a><span style="font-family:arial;">Now, a permanent fixture at Kowloon BJJ is Makoto Aramaki, a BJJ black-belt hailing from Japan. Aramaki-san was one of the black-belts that competed in the open-tournament at <a href="http://www.bjj-asia.com/2008/04/copa-de-hong-kong-recap-part-1.html"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Copa De Hong Kong</span></a>, facing Xandinho from BTT. I am hoping this can be done by the end of July or early August. I will keep everyone posted on its progress. Besides representing the community with these shirts, it's also my goal to use the money from sales to develop a full website with an interactive calendar and data-base. So for it's just been me at the helm but for it to be a real community site, I want everyone involved and posting.</span> <span style="font-family:arial;">A work in progress of course but that's one of my goals here. This coming September will be the 1st year anniversary of the bjj-asia. Perhaps I'll make a commemorative shirt, hahaha. </span> <span style="font-family:arial;"><br /><br />-Luke</span>LUKEnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2456765418480247631.post-35411958716757578482008-07-13T20:04:00.000-07:002008-07-22T02:24:21.142-07:00SINGAPORE BJJ INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT: AUGUST 2008<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_xRN063YbHqY/SIWm_ydDoHI/AAAAAAAABtA/_z-e2-k2Hs4/s1600-h/singapore_bjj_tournament.gif"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_xRN063YbHqY/SIWm_ydDoHI/AAAAAAAABtA/_z-e2-k2Hs4/s400/singapore_bjj_tournament.gif" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5225766557438943346" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;" >SINGAPORE INTERNATIONAL BRAZILIAN JIUJITSU CHAMPIONSHIP 2008</span></span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family:arial;"> </span> <span style="font-family:arial;">Date: 30th & 31st August 2008</span> <span style="font-family:arial;"> </span> <span style="font-family:arial;"><br />Venue: SAFRA Tampines. 1/ A Tampines Street 92 Singapore 528882.</span> <span style="font-family:arial;"><br />(10min from Changi International Airport Singapore )</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"> </span> <span style="font-family:arial;">Categories:</span> <span style="font-family:arial;"> </span><span style="font-family:arial;"><br />1) White Belt (novice)</span> <span style="font-family:arial;"><br />2) White Belt (advance)</span> <span style="font-family:arial;"><br />3) Blue Belt</span> <span style="font-family:arial;"><br />4) No GI (novice)</span> <span style="font-family:arial;"><br />5) No GI (advance)</span> <span style="font-family:arial;"> </span> <span style="font-family:arial;"><br /><br />For more information, email: <a href="http://www.blogger.com/fightworksasia@gmail.com"><span style="font-weight: bold;">fightworksasia@gmail.com</span></a></span></div>LUKEnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2456765418480247631.post-15318851336990864942008-07-08T10:23:00.000-07:002008-07-08T10:29:52.850-07:00MING WU MMA: TAIWAN<span style="font-family:arial;">Got some new video from the recent Ming Wu MMA event in Taiwan. I plan to send these out to the printers by Friday afternoon.</span> <span style="font-family:arial;"><br /><br />As of now, the I believe the shirts will cost $18 USD per. The semi-finals have been set and will conclude in the coming month. BJJ was well represented in what was an informal match up of style versus style. I really hope this can help the promotion of both BJJ and MMA here in Thailand. -Luke</span><br /><br /><span style="color: rgb(153, 0, 0);font-family:arial;" >***note: I've removed these videos because they have consistently made my browser crash and automatically play whenever I am on the blog. I do have other interests of course but that's not what this blog is about. I've been thinking about how I can keep myself focused even though I unable to train consistently like at home. I've mentioned before the practice of watching tournament footage, visualizing techniques, dissecting my recent matches and creating plans for when I can return to the mats. More than anything, I try to focus on the aspects of jiu-jitsu that make it so much fun. I can't get bent out of shape for not training as much as I'd like because these are my circumstances. I just want to be sure that when I do return, I really appreciate how good it feels to put on my gi, smell that funky dojo-aroma and get that edge back from training regularly.<br /><br />These days I am feeling a little doughy, haha.</span> <span style="font-family:arial;">Will try to fit in some training this trip before heading back to Bangkok. -Luke</span>LUKEnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2456765418480247631.post-46048990564847174482008-06-24T18:28:00.000-07:002008-06-24T18:31:51.948-07:00JIU-JITSU PARADISE<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_xRN063YbHqY/SGGfp1yfAsI/AAAAAAAABpQ/_ZRGGbpzskk/s1600-h/imagex.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_xRN063YbHqY/SGGfp1yfAsI/AAAAAAAABpQ/_ZRGGbpzskk/s400/imagex.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5215625384634024642" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Check out the link from Gracie Magazine on Niko Han's new spot in Bali:</span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: 10pt;">Dojo Aora<br />Jl. I was able to watch some tournament footage while traveling to curb my frustrations of not being on the mat with a lot of down time to think about my game and approach to competition. A friend of mine recently asked me who my favorites were in regards to BJJ fighters. It was tough for me to reply since there's a number of guys that I really enjoy watching but doesn't mean their game influences what I can/try to do.<br /><br />With a few individuals I've been able to collect a number of their fights from purple to black-belt. In these clips it's pretty clear that the person has already established their game but is just one point of development. From purple to black I can see the same sweep, the same pass and setups but that they are being refined as time passes. I'm sure new things are added to the mix but the core is basically there. I'll admit I probably don't see everything yet when watching tournament footage but it's adding up and when I revisit certain fights I may catch something new here and there.<br /><br />There's two guys from Japan that have gotten my interest: Yusuke Honma and Dai Yoshioka. Dai in particular has been one of the early black-belts to come out from the Purebred Japan camp. Nowadays he sports a super-loose judo gi with no patches which probably means he's unaffiliated. Both took silver in their weight at the last mundials and represent the growing number of high-level of competitors outside of Brazil and United States. Just some food for thought as it helps me better understand how I want to progress and find my own voice in all of this.<br /><br />Renan Borges vs. Dai Yoshioka<br /><object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KCItoWX-Gzw&hl=en"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KCItoWX-Gzw&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>LUKEnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2456765418480247631.post-25119361739339348602008-06-23T01:42:00.000-07:002008-06-23T01:43:49.644-07:00MARIANAS OPEN<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:180%;" ><span style="font-family: arial;">MARIANAS OPEN<br />2008 AUGUST, 30 2008</span></span><br /><span style="font-family: arial;"></span><span style="font-family: arial;"></span><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">LOCATION: </span><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">F.D.
