FREDDY LYNXX 'No Pleasure Thrills'

Freddy Lynxx is a long-time activist. In 1983 he starts with a band named Les Aristochattes. The following year he's involved with glam-punk group The Jet Boys wich opens several times at Johnny Thunders gigs in Paris. Their sole LP 'Larger Than Life' is released by Skydog Records. When they break up he's already recording with The Watchmainz.

Freddy Lynxx is known for touring Europe with US underground legend Jeff Dahl. He also founds his own label Sucksex Records (Johnny Thunders, New York Dolls, Kevin K, Ghost Train, Johan Asherton, aso) and is the man behind the French Johnny Thunders fanzine and tribute CD.

'No Pleasure Thrills' is his first solo LP released in 1996. It is more or less a compilation of acoustic demos and cover songs played during live appearences or jams with heroes & friends like Johnny Thunders, Nikki Sudden, Johan Asherton and Nicky Hopkins. Sound quality varies from song to song but it's a pleasant listen. Especially the great rendition of 'I Love You'.

'A' BOMB 'From Memphis To Detroit'

Hailing from Strasbourg, France, 'A' Bomb started during the mod revival movement in 1980 and got their name from 'There's An 'A' Bomb In Wardour Street' by The Jam. 'From Memphis To Detroit' is their sole LP self-released in 1985.

When the first incarnation of the band broke up, the two remaining members — Loukoum (voice) and Dominic Sonic O.D. (bass) — took another musical direction influenced by The Stooges, The Saints, pub rock and '50s rock'n'roll.

UNDERBEAT STATION 'What's Your Dream Today ?'

Thierry Duvigneau is one of the great rock artists from France. He owned excellent critics for his work during the Kid Pharaon era. After the band broke up in 1991, he resurfaced three years later with the Underbeat Station moniker just for one album before dissapearing again from the musical scene.

'What's Your Dream Today ?' was not the commercial success as probably expected. The album is not even listed on the Kid Pharaon Wikipedia page and is now a rare item. Some songs are influenced by reggae dub and the whole production sounds slightly different from Duvigneau's previous work. It may not be as good as a Kid Pharaon album but it's worth a listen. You decide !

COUPLE 'Top Of The Pop'

In the serie of posts submitted by the bands themselves here is Couple from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. They were formed in 1995, and have since recorded and released 5 demo tapes/CD-Rs and have amassed a reasonable amount of fans simply through word-of-mouth and through positive reviews and articles.

Couple's debut album, 'Top Of The Pop' was self-released in April 2006 in Malaysia and sold by hand at their gigs and through their MySpace profile. The album was later picked up for a licensing release in America by Sizzleteen Records and in Japan by Wizzard In Vinyl.

The band's brain is Aidil Rusli. A gifted songwriter if you ask me. He writes melodic songs with memorable hooks and energetic beats. That's power pop isn't it ? While a lot of bands have a really nice sound but not all that much to say 'Top Of The Pop' contains songs among the best I've heard this year. As simple as that.

But I realize that my telling to get this album of a band you've never heard from the other side of the world is not enough. Here are some clues:

On a first listen I was thinking Weezer, Teenage Fan Club or even Big Star.
They were picked by Rolling Stone magazine as one of their '25 Best Bands on MySpace'.
They were invited to play at International Pop Overthrow festival in Los Angeles and San Francisco which they had to decline because of lack of funds. Nevertheless the song 'Gotta Be My Gurl' is included in the International Pop Overthrow Vol. 9 compilation CD.
Even if it's not enough with all that sugar-sweet power pop, you have to wait track 11 to hear the best song of the album — at least to my ears. In French we say: la classe !

LINKERS 'Dusty Memory Lane'

Recorded between 1996 and 1998 this is the final release for The Linkers that, for professional and family reasons, the singer Jean-Michel Fauché leaves in 1998. 'Dusty Memory Lane' can't be promoted live without a frontman so the LP is a limited pressing of 200 copies, each one hand numbered, published on Time Warp Records.

14 tracks of Hammond and Farfisa fulled, Fuzz powerded garage mayhem. This time recorded at two different places: Teyssonneau Mobile Unit and Le Chalet Studio. Thierry 'Kid Pharaon' Duvigneau is again involved in recording and mixing among other people.

The addition of a saxophone, female background vocals, and the unusual dark mood on some songs ('Dusty Memory lane', 'Ligeia') make this LP something special in The band's discography.

After playing a while with an Irish singer, the group broke up definitively at the end of 1999. A reformation of The Linkers took place in January 2007 for the 'Bordeaux Rock' festival that revives ten bands of the '90s. A book - or rather a bible - by Denis Fouquet also entitled 'Bordeaux Rock(s)' redraws among the multitude of bands from the '60s to recent days the story of The Linkers.

This single has 2 versions of 'Countdown Love'. The first side features Johnny Thunders and the Que Sera Sera 'Black Cats' band. It was recorded in 1985 at London England's Tin Pan Alley Studios. Sound is crisp and clear with the vocals and guitar taking prominence rather than the bass and drums. Background vocals by Stiv Bators and Michael Monroe are, unfortunately, not too exciting. They just add a couple of oowwws and aahhhss.

Side B features Jerry Nolan with the Teneriffa Cowboys again performing 'Countdown Love'. It was recorded in Stockholm Sweden in 1983 at Decibel studios. This is a more interesting version of the tune with slightly different lyrics and Jerry singing the chorus at a different pace.

YEAAAAH !!! Here's another super-fuzzy Farfiza-driven record by the French garage kings. This 4 tracks EP, once again recorded at le Chalet Studio by Jean-Marc Sigrist, was originally supposed to come out on the Outer Limits label from Berlin. Things being what they are it was finally self-released by the Band on their own label Time Warp.

If you like their past releases, this one's in the same line but with that 'something more' that makes it my favorite from the Linkers stuff already posted here. This record is limited to 300 copies. A few copies are still available from the band. (contact: thelinkers@free.fr).

This compilation album released by Sonet consist of tracks recorded throughout the seventies by Jona Lewie - with Terry Dactyl and The Dinosaurs and as a solo artist - before he signed a record deal to Siff Records. It's a time-warp blend of skiffle, blues, jug-band and his particular sense of humor.

Lewis formed his first group, Dramatis Personae, while still at school in 1964, and started in the music industry as a session pianist. By 1969 he joined Brett Marvin And The Thunderbolts and recorded an album for United Artists Records called 'Gasolene'. In 1970 they went to Sonet.

After a few singles came 'Seaside Shuffle'. Released under the pseudonym of Terry Dactyl and The Dinosaurs it made No. 2 in the British charts and was a big hit across Europe. Sometimes believed to be borrowed from Mungo Jerry's 1970 chart-topper 'In the Summertime', it was a song in the Brett Marvin and the Thunderbolts repertoir before the days of Terry Dactyl and the Dinosaurs, and as a composition predates Mungo Jerry. Interestingly Mungo Jerry, before his hit, played as a backing act for Brett Marvin a number of times.

In 1975 Brett Marvin And The Thunderbolts went their separate ways and Jona Lewie signed to Sonet as soloist and released a few singles. An early version of 'Hallelujah Europa' was rejected by the selection team of The Eurovision song contest. No more was heard of Jona Lewie until 1977 when he was taken on by the leading independent label Stiff.

One Stiff act that stands out for the sheer eclecticism of his work is Jona Lewie, who was signed in late 1977 and set to work on his debut album, released as part of a package to accompany the 'Be Stiff' tour, and was promoted as an unlikely combination of Fats Domino and Kraftwerk!

While he wasn't one of the biggest names on Stiff records, Jona Lewie was one of those irresistible characters who gave the British indie label its unique flavor singing boogie-woogie meets synth pop tunes in a dry Ian Dury-ish voice.

Playing his voice like an other instrument in the band, Lewie adds his own style to an already eccentric generation of vocalists. Most distinctive was his taste for musical nostalgia.

He scored a solo hit with the humorous number, '(You'll Always Find Me in the) Kitchen at Parties' wich made the British Top 20. By the end of the year he was back in the charts with what became his biggest (and, to date, last) hit, 'Stop the Cavalry'.

This is the French edition of 'On The Other Hand There's A Fist' LP distributed by Barclay. Same songs but different cover. The record inside seems to be the regular Stiff one.

LINKERS 'Voodoo Eyes'

After Their debut EP 'Suzy', Weed Records released this 6-song mini-Lp in March 1995 titled after one of the record's song 'Voodoo Eyes' wich brings The Linkers' garage type of sound a little bit further and much beyond the usual efforts of a garage band.

This record is once again recorded and mixed by Thierry 'Kid Pharaon' Duvignau and contains some pretty impressive songs with the organ and the guitar on the frontline, the lead vocals adaptable to the different moods, and a high powered rhythm section.

What they deliver to us is far from the average garage band. Listen to their version of The Sonics' 'The Witch', and hear that absolutely demented lead guitar to be convinced. But it's their original material that will make you listen to them again and again.

LINKERS 'Suzy'

The Linkers is a Bordeaux based band formed in the early '90s by enthusiastic garage true-belivers with a sound full of thick organ in the same line than garage bands of the '80s such as The Cynics, The Miracle Workers, The Fuzztones or The Creeps. They have three EP's, two LP's, and several compilation tracks on their credit. I can't find better words than Timothy Gassen in his book 'The Knights Of Fuzz' about their debut release on Weed records :

The EP really is a fine slab of garagemania. 'Suzy' blasts an organ led stomper, while the fivesome rips through The Creeps' 'She's Gone' with demented determination.

Get the picture ? If you're not convinced yet, it is necessary to add that on this EP it's Kid Pharaon recording and mixing at Le Chalet Studios. The Linkers are one of the leaders of the continuing garage movement during the '90s. They recently reformed for one night playing at the 'Bordeaux Rock' festival.

NEEDS 'Hatemarket'

The Needs is a French groupe formed at the beginning of 1990 in the area of Aix-en-Provence and Marseilles by musicians inspired by the American garage and psychedelic scene from the 60's. Produced by Henri Gauby The Needs also had sponsorship from Lucas Trouble (keyboards of The Vietnam Veterans) for several albums and the contribution of Steve Wynn who wrote 'Smooth' for their album 'As The Wreck Knows The Waves...'

After three albums ('Dyin' On Blue Pebbles', 'As The Wreck Knows The Waves...', 'Hatemarket') and several contributions to compilations, The Needs gradually stopped their activity in the second half of the 90's before being reformed in 2004 for a tribute concert to their producer and inspirator Henry Gauby, deceased in november 2003.

The Needs decided to start again their musical activity in 2005 with several concerts. A new album 'Songs From The Grave' recorded in the Kaiser Studios (Lucas Trouble's place) was issued at the end of 2006

MOTÖR HEADGIRL SCHOOL 'St Valentine's Day Massacre'

This three track EP, released on Valentine's Day 1981 featured Motörhead and labelmates, Girlschool each covering one song by the other: Girlschool took on Motörhead's 'Bomber', while Motörhead did a relentless rendition of the Girlschool's 'Emergency'. For the third track the two bands collaborated on a remake of Johnny Kidd & the Pirates' 1959 classic 'Please Don't Touch'.

For the album sleeve they dressed in gangster attire, in honor of one of the most legendary Capone-directed mob hits in gangland history, the 1929 Valentine's Day Massacre. When the EP hit number 5 on the British singles charts both bands were at the apex of their careers. Produced by Vic Maile!

MOCK TURTLES 'Two Sides'

The Mock Turtles followed a line of success stories that had emanated from Manchester, between 1989 and 1991. Like many of their contemporaries, they had been playing the independent circuit for several years before realizing their potential. As the Mock Turtles, Martin Coogan, who had previously fronted Judge Happiness, was joined by Steve Green (bass), Krzysztof Korab (keyboards) and Steve Cowen (drums).

The band started their career signed to the Imaginary Label and contributed to a number of the label's tribute compilations. They covered tracks like 'No Good Trying' by Syd Barrett, 'Big Sky' by The Kinks, 'Big-Eyed Beans From Venus' by Captain Beefheart, 'Why' by The Byrds or 'Pale Blue Eyes' by The Velvet Underground and they did them justice. Before long they were recording their own material and displayed a wide variety of styles from pop to rock via folk.

Hot on its heels came a well-received debut album, 'Turtle Soup', which fared well on the independent chart. This was enough to lure Siren Records, and for their first major label single, the band chose to rework the b-side of 'Lay Me Down', 'Can You Dig It?'. The single was an instant hit, with BBC Television's Top Of The Pops appearances to match, and in its wake came another reissue of sorts, 'And Then She Smiles'. This failed to build on the success of 'Can You Dig It', and the Mock Turtles' highly commercial 'Two Sides' suffered from a low profile, despite its abundance of musical muscle and carefully crafted songs.

By this time Madchester had fallen. Labels were no longer so hot on Manc bands. And the Mock Turtles were thrown into obscurity and they were dumped by their record label. It was a crying shame. They could have been major players in the soon to come Brit pop scene if it hadn't been for a label that didn't recognise true talent when they saw it.

KARA'S FLOWERS 'The Fourth World'

The Kara's Flowers members had been friends since attending junior high school in Los Angeles when, in 1995, they formed a power pop band named for a girl and the flowers to her on her birthday. The band signed with Reprise Records and released its first and only album, 'The Fourth World', in the middle of 1997 that failed to take off commercially. In 1999, the band parted company with Reprise Records.

They were featured very briefly on the television series Beverly Hills, 90210 as a band for the Peach Pit After Dark in the episode 'Forgive and Forget'. Adam Levine (vocals/guitar), Jesse Carmichael (guitar), Mickey Madden (bass) and Ryan Dusick (drums), with the addition of James Valentine will later have more success under the name Maroon 5.

WARM GUN 'Chinese Gangsters'

Originally named Bitch or sometimes Bitches, this parisian band gives up the name for Warm Gun when they sign a contrat for the Isadora label. Produced by Paul Pechenaert (in the first line-up of Les Dogs), their sole EP issued during the punk era has now become legendary. They were 18 years old, they had the good influences (The New York Dolls, The Stooges, etc.), but what makes the difference with a regular band of that time is the poppier aspects of the songs. A second record was planned but never saw the light of day.

Band member guitarist Thierry Dionisio now plays in a band called DKP with Zox (also in the first Les Dogs line-up) on bass. See their MySpace page for more info.

In 1983, Philippe Debris is the owner of the Closer record store based in Le Havre when he founds the label of the same name to publish The Barracudas' second album wich at the time are searching for a record company.

Alternating records of Le Havre-natives (Fixed Up, Marc Minelli, etc.) , national (Les Thugs, Batmen, Kid Pharaon, etc.), and international bands (The Sunnyboys, Beasts Of Bourbon, The Ramones, etc.), Closer Records won't deviate from its 'real rock'n'roll' trajectory until 1990.

In collaboration with Teenage Records (another label from Le Havre led by Stéphane Saunier) this compilation presents thirteen French bands of 1987.

Abus Dangereux is a French fanzine existing since 1987. Every two month they give an open approach of independant music with a particular focus on new groups. A free CD is given with each publication. Here is Abus 11…

Bruce Joyner's 'Science Fiction' is an outtake from the 'Sir Real' session issued by New Rose in 1992 and produced by Tom Byars. The backing band is Out Of The Fire wich was initiated by Byars back in 1984.

After 'Southern Decay', Bruce Joyner and the rest of The Unknows went their separate ways. A record was planned for them to be issued in 1992 but is still unreleased. Only 'Cigarette Chick' found the light of day on this CD.

The Shaking Dolls is a French band hailing from Anger. They were signed on the Black & Noir label and have released a single 'Teenagers are Nuts' and a LP 'God is God'. This is their version of the Mudhoney classic.

Suspense had been the singer of a parisian garage band named The Cherokees for several years. In 1990 he moved to Los Angeles and began to work on new songs with Pat Byars (electric guitars, steel & slide, organ, vocals) and Marko Fox (bass) - both have played with Bruce Joyner - but also with David 'Country' Hollis (drums), Lizzy Ballogh (vocals), and Patti Thornton (vocals). Pat Byars also produced the record, and co-wrote one song

Following the album, Suspense founded Ultra Orange with his girlfriend Gil Lesage. The band released three albums and more recently collaborated with actress Emmanuelle Seignier for the album 'Ultra Orange et Emmanuelle Seignier'. As a bonus you can find a non album track released on a free CD given by the French fanzine Abus Dangeureux.

UNKNOWS 'Southern Decay'

In 1983, Bruce Joyner began collaboration with Tom Byars. In 1990, he returned to Georgia, and the Unknows got together again for a new LP 'Southern Decay' produced by Byars and issued by New Rose in 1991. After that, Joyner left again to focus on his solo work and also because suffering some health problems. In 2002, With Byars, they re-activated Out of the Fire, a band they actually had in 1984. They have since recorded new songs with another band named Reconstruction.

'Backbeat' is a 1994 movie that chronicles the early days of The Beatles in Hamburg, Germany. The movie focuses primarily on the relationship between Stuart Sutcliffe, Sutcliffe's German girlfriend Astrid Kirchherr and John Lennon. The soundtrack to the movie features no Beatles songs, but the cover tunes they used to play in Hamburg, written and recorded by other artists.

The idea was that The Beatles' pre-recording stage act was 'the punk of its day'. Rather than re-create the early Beatles sound, musicians from well-known alternative American rock bands were recruited: Dave Pirner (Soul Asylum, vocals), Greg Dulli (The Afghan Whigs, vocals), Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth, guitar), Don Fleming (Gumball, guitar), Mike Mills (R.E.M., bass guitar), and Dave Grohl (Nirvana/Foo Fighters, drums)

Paul McCartney, however, was disappointed, stating: 'One of my annoyances about the film Backbeat is that they've actually taken my rock 'n' rollness off me. They give John the song 'Long Tall Sally' to sing and he never sang it in his life.'

I can't find a good reason why Christmas records are not a trendy thing for French rock artists . Only a few songs come to my mind: 'La fille du Père Noël' by Jacques Dutronc, 'Noël interdit' by Johnny Hallyday and 'Le twist du Père Noël' by Les Chaussettes Noires.

Served by Agneta Nilson, here is an anti Christmas punk rock tune by Les Félés. They were about 12/13 years old at the time of the release of 'Rouge come le sang' (meaning red like blood) and were presented as a punk-rock group but most of the people considered them as fake. Listening to it now, I must admit this record is not bad at all. Quite funny too!

In 1979, when Telephone had a huge success, every major label wanted to sign a rock band singing in French. To promote new acts on the label, Philips had the idea to organize a festival named 'Frenchrockmania' at the Palais des Sports in Paris on June 9th.

A 6 tracks EP was given for free, and the festival was recorded to be mixed and manufactered during that night and released the following day. This is probably the reason why it sounds mostly like a bootleg. On the bill: Paris-Foxy, Ciné Palace, Go-Go Pigalles, French-Cancan and two of the best bands of that time, Les Dogs and Bijou.

The first studio recording released by Philips from Les Dogs is 'Gotta Tell Her' on the 6 tracks EP but here you can listen to two cover songs: 'I'm Real' (Don & The Good Times) and 'Boris The Spider' (The Who). This is a good picture of Les Dogs, now as a trio, just in between the 'Go Where You Want To Go' 12 inch and the 'Different' LP released later that summer.

Bijou were the headliners of the festival and have four song on this live compilation with the privilege of one song with Serge Gainsbourg on vocals ('Relax Baby Be Cool', later re-worked for his reggae album). This is his first apparition on stage since ten years. Chris Spedding is another guest on 'Il revient' (a Gene Vincent cover song).

Both bands justified the purchase of this record. The others are rather poor but someone asked for the Dogs songs and I think it might be a good idea to post the entire LP.
