Curtis Salgado (Blues/ R & B /Soul)
Curtis Salgado's musical journey began with his birth in Everett, Washington, in 1954. His family moved to Eugene, Oregon when he was one and he grew up there listening to jazz, and to his father, an aspiring singer of classical music. His ambitions coalesced when, at age 12, he saw Count Basie's band perform in Eugene. Curtis became a part of the burgeoning Northwest blues scene starting in 1972 with a band called Three-Fingered Jack. Eventually he hooked up with up-and-coming guitarist/vocalist Robert Cray, and recorded the album "Who's Been Talking." In six years with Robert, the higher level of visibility enabled Salgado to sit in with the likes of Muddy Waters, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Albert Collins and Bonnie Raitt. Aside from being a tremendous vocalist, Curtis is one of the finest blues harmonica players in the country. In 1979, when John Belushi was in Eugene filming Animal House, he caught Curtis' act and liked what he heard and saw. Curtis took the actor under his wing and schooled him on blues and R & B history, which Belushi soaked up like a sponge, and used a good portion of Curtis' show as the basis for the Blues Brothers act he and Dan Akroyd put together. Chris Hillman:
He is a folkie who wound up in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. He is a journeyman sideman who wound up singing lead on 10 top-10 country smash hits. He is a bluegrass mandolin picker who detoured to three Gold Records in rock bands. He is a self-taught composer who wound up cowriting some of the cornerstone songs of the country-rock repertoire. In the beginning, he was just another curly-headed, guitar-playing kid from Southern California. But his life in music has taken him through several of the major movements that have defined modern American pop -- folk-rock, hippie psychedelia, country-rock, jazz fusion, contemporary country and modern bluegrass. His name is Chris Hillman. During his three decades as a music maker, his laborators have included Emmylou Harris, Stephen Stills, Vern Gosdin, David Crosby, Gram Parsons, Dan Fogelberg, J.D. Souther, Bob Dylan, and Roger McGuinn. He has been a member of The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Desert Rose Band. He is a living history of popular music. But since he is nowhere near finished making memories, that's a book he's not ready to write.
Herb Pedersen:
Herb began his career in Berkeley, California in the early 60's playing 5 string banjo and acoustic guitar with people like David Grisman, Butch Waller, David Nelson, and Jerry Garcia. For the last thirty years, Herb has lived in southern California, and participated in select music groups, either in recording, or traveling on the road doing concerts. His recording discography is like a who's who of the singer/songwriter scene, so prevalent in the 70s and 80s. His own groups, like The Desert Rose Band, and The Laurel Canyon Ramblers, show why Herb is so respected in the industry. With his lifelong pal, Chris Hillman, Herb is in the process of continuing the type of music they both grew up playing and singing. There is a work in progress most of the time and that's the way Herb likes it.

Greg Brown
Greg Brown's mother played electric guitar, his grandfather played banjo, and his father was a Holy Roller preacher in the Hacklebarney section of Iowa, where the Gospel and music are a way of life. Brown's first professional singing job came at age 18 in New York City, running hootenannies (folksinger get-togethers) at the legendary Gerdes Folk City. After a year, Brown moved west to Los Angeles and Las Vegas, where he was a ghostwriter for Buck Ram, founder of the Platters. Tired of the fast-paced life, Brown traveled with a band for a few years, and even quit playing for a while before he moved back to Iowa and began writing songs and playing in midwestern clubs and coffeehouses.Brown's songwriting has been lauded by many, and his songs have been performed by Willie Nelson, Carlos Santana, Michael Johnson,
Shawn Colvin, and Mary Chapin Carpenter. He has also recorded more than a dozen albums, including his 1986 release, Songs of Innocence and of Experience, when he put aside his own songwriting to set poems of William Blake to music. One Big Town, recorded in 1989, earned Brown three and a half stars in Rolling Stone, chart-topping status in AAA and The Gavin Report's Americana rankings and Brown's first Indie Award from NAIRD (National Association of Independent Record Distributors). The Poet Game, his 1994 CD, received another Indie award from NAIRD. His critically acclaimed 1996 release, Further In, was a finalist for the same award. Rolling Stone's four-star review of Further In called Brown "a wickedly sharp observer of the human condition." 1997's Slant 6 Mind (Red House Records) earned Brown his second Grammy nomination. His latest CD, One Night (Red House), is a re-release of a 1983 live performance originally on Minneapolis' Coffeehouse Extempor頒ecords.

If you like real honky tonk country music you will love this. Dad?s guitar playing and singing is at it?s best. With lots of steel guitar and even some glass breaking in the background. The last seven songs are recorded live at Maxines in 1977. They feature, Dad?s partner of twenty-five years on the steel guitar, Joe Green. A songwriting legend returns to KC after 25 years!
JD was Glenn Frey's roommate (the downstairs neighbor was Jackson Browne) and went on to write "New Kid In Town", "Heartache Tonight", "Best of My Love" and others for The Eagles. One of the principal architects of the Southern California country-rock sound, Souther famously played a key role in the formation of the Eagles as well as writing Linda Ronstadt's classics "Faithless Love","Simple Man, Simple Dream", and "Prisoner in Disguise".

You know J.D., even if you don't think you do. On top of a successful solo career, including the hit "You're Only Lonely" J.D. was an "unofficial Eagle" who wrote a ton of their greatest hits. He also penned some of Linda Ronstadt's best songs, was a member of Souther Hillman and Furay, a 70's group that featured former members of the Byrds and Poco, and he appeared regularly on the television show Thirtysomething.

Souther has just released his first new CD in 25 years, and is coming to Kansas City for the first time since he opened for the Eagles at Kemper Arena on the Hotel California tour.

In 1984, singer/songwriter J.D. Souther followed the chart-topping successes of "You're Only Lonely" and the James Taylor duet "Her Town Too". With HOME BY DAWN, an album that Rolling Stone declared his best, with songs that "rank right up there with his forlorn classics "Run like a Thief" and "Faithless Love". And then, in 1985, after a brief tour in support of the album, J.D. Souther disappeared. A highly sought-after songwriter and session man, Souther also released three critically acclaimed solo albums -- "John David Souther", (1972) "Black Rose",(1976), and "You?re Only Lonely" (1979) -- and two albums as a member of The Souther Hillman Furay Band, the supergroup which united Souther with Poco's Richie Furay and the Byrds' Chris Hillman.

But in 1985, after countless hit records, Grammy nominations, American Music
Awards, and gold and platinum albums, J.D. Souther decided to walk away from his solo career. According to Souther: "I just wanted to be a good songwriter. I wanted to just stay home and write."

Relocating to Nashville, Souther wrote for and with artists as diverse as
India.Arie, Brooks & Dunn, Jimmy Buffet, Glen Campbell, Joe Cocker, Crosby Stills & Nash, Diamond Rio, Dixie Chicks, Don Henley, One Flew South, Roy Orbison, Bernadette Peters, Bonnie Raitt, George Strait, Brian Wilson, Trisha Yearwood, Warren Zevon, and most recently the newly re-formed Eagles, who chose Souther's protest song "How Long" as the debut single from their first studio album in twenty-eight years.

Which is precisely why I jumped at the chance to see Bob Wootten play the Chambers Hotel; I never had the opportunity to see the Man in Black live, and Wootten provided fans with a strikingly familiar performance of Cash's best songs. From 1968 to 2005, Wootten played alongside Cash as his main guitarist, providing the signature "boom-chick" sound that listener's associate with Cash's music. The formation of The Band of Heathens is as natural and organic as the music they create In early spring 2006, the three principle songwriters, Colin Brooks, Ed Jurdi and Gordy Quist were sharing the bill every Wednesday night at the venerable Austin club Momo's. Originally it started as each songwriter performing his own set. But in a short time they started sharing the stage equally and collaborating on each other's songs, with bassist Seth Whitney as the anchor of the rhythm section. The singer-songwriter left the Great Divide to follow his own path. It would have been easy for Mike McClure to remain with the Great Divide. The successful country band, which formed in 1992, was a rock-solid act, with a strong fan base. But the Oklahoma-based singer-songwriter was compelled to leave the group in 2003. "I had to do it for me as a musician and a person," McClure said while calling from Laguna Beach, Calif. "I did it even though it meant that I went from playing for 2,000 people to 30 people back when I started doing the solo thing. I had to go because of artistic differences. I had to do things my way."

A European tour capped off a Juno nomination and a win at the Western Canadian Music Awards. 2007 saw the band continue to expand and grow with the release their third album, "Tow Truck" (nominated for WCMA's for oustanding blues and independant album), the recording of their just-released live album, 2008's "Live at the High & Lonesome Club" and a very successful second European tour which including the recording of live radio specials in Germany and Belgium. like a couple of favourites of mine -- Stevie Ray Vaughan and George Thorogood.
I was instantly reminded of Thorogood, and just as quickly found it impossible to sit still.
This is dancing/drinking/shooting pool music at its finest! Sulher is not only
exceptional as a guitarist, but as a songwriter, too.
