Voted Best Comedy Group in San Francisco (2007) by the SF Weekly, Best Laugh Factory by the San Francisco Bay Guardian and two-time winner of the Best of the Fringe Award at the San Francisco Fringe Festivals, KML has produced over two –dozen theme-based comedy shows. In 2006, KML produced the world premiere of its first produced full-length play, Hunter Gatherers, by KML alumnus Peter Sinn Nachtrieb. Extended five times in its 4 month run at SF's Thick House, the play went on to win Theatre Bay Area's Will Glickman Award for best new Bay Area play of 2006, and the Steinberg Award for best play produced outside of New York in 2006.

The group has produced almost 20 short films that have screened at over 40 film festivals including Sundance, and the San Francisco International Film Festival where the Lobsters took home a Golden Spire Award. The San Francisco Chronicle calls Killing My Lobster "the closest thing the Bay Area has to its own Second City."

Since the Lobster's first show in a 25-seat converted office in the Mission on Valentine's Day, 1997, Killing My Lobster has worked with over 300 Bay Area actors, writers, directors, designers, filmmakers and musicians to create exciting original work for local and national audiences. Killing My Lobster shows regularly include live bands, thematically coherent through lines, and an emphasis on high-production values. The material is created collaboratively which results in a range of comedic styles that fuse raucous slapstick with sharp satire, wacky monologues with indulgent musical numbers and once in a while gives rise to a slide show about cats and nuclear physics.

SFState Theatrenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2408735535630121466.post-78887028374090602252008-05-30T14:18:00.000-07:002008-05-30T14:21:00.886-07:00The Journeys of the Angels - Tickets on Sale NowTickets are now on sale for:

"The Journeys of the Angels"

A World Premiere Play
Written by Roy Conboy
Directed by Gabrielle Gomez

Follow this link to buy tickets:
http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/36018

ABOUT "THE JOURNEYS OF THE ANGELS"...

Two decades after a war, a daughter is lost on the freeways, and a father is lost in the forest, while two tenacious tias are trying to rebuild their family from beyond the grave.

Produced by:
El Teatro de la Esperanza
SFSU Theatre Arts
21 Voices

Featuring:
Richard Talavera
Aileen Clark
Rocky Haro
Cat Callejas
Claire Rice
Augustina Fresquez
Steve Ortiz
Paul Rodrigues

With Designs by:
Darcy Villere
Mia Baxter
Nick Brandon
Mike Gurnari

Preview: Thur. Now it is time to assemble a production team

What would you do? Partly that depends on your background and interest. An interest in African American wouldn’t hurt since our subject is an Af-Am author, but talent and experience can transcend racial distinctions, can’t they?

I believe I have designers, but haven’t signed contracts yet so will still accept resumes in those areas.

I am hunting for a Stage Manager. I also want a Production Assistant, to help keep things organized as we transition from the reading series to a full production. I want to train someone to do Publicity, an Assistant Director ...what are your skill areas and/or areas of interest?

There isn't much money, so this would not be your 'day' job. The stipend will be around $200-$300, depending on your position. But it will give you a crash course in producing and Bay Area theater, and this play will be opening a new space, so we expect to get quite a bit of attention.

Below is a copy of our grant proposal, which should give you the scope of the project, check out the following, and if you think it might be something you'd like to do, let's talk soon. I hope to have folks on board by the end of the month.

PROPOSAL

Had he lived, Richard Wright, the renowned author of Native Son and Black Boy would be 100 years old on September 4th, 2008.

Local playwright Richard Talavera approached Oakland Public Theater with a proposal for a piece marking this centennial. It focuses on a community of African American writers and artists in Paris in the 1950s, including James Baldwin, Chester Himes (best known for hard-boiled Black detective novels like Cotton Comes To Harlem) and Black political cartoonist Ollie Harrington.

The proposed play centers on Wright and this group of Black American expatriates living in Paris shortly before Wright’s mysterious death, their friendships and tensions (including some intrigue with both government and Communist agents) which each of them writes about, a disagreement that explodes between them and, finally, a last-minute appearance of Langston Hughes visiting Wright –almost literally on his death bed. It is a little bit Amadeus, a little bit Travesties, a little bit Laramie Project and all Black. The project was quickly approved.

Once research began, it quickly became obvious that this material warranted more than could be encompassed by just a single play. The connections between the fiction and non-fiction of these very different men –Wright, a former Communist and mostly self-taught son of a southern sharecropper, in self-imposed exile from America; Baldwin the gay intellectual son of a preacher from New York; and Himes the ex-convict son of a Negro Professor –all come together to re-define the American Negro in the mid-20th Century and give voice to a school of thought that helps to spawn the Civil Rights movement.

Thus the Richard Wright Centennial Reading Series was born. Using their own words to create a sense of dialogue between these writers, OPT has been presenting readings in theaters, libraries, and meeting rooms. OPT continues its history of bringing theater to the community, using this project to introduce and re-acquaint our community to this important yet largely forgotten literary figure.

This was the first phase in our process to create a new work, which has now been invited to inaugurate the new performance space at the Noodle Factory in West Oakland in September. We seek a CASH grant to support the next phase of development and the production of this fall’s show. The grant will help us to bring designers and actors into the process for the next phase, the distillation of the reading series material into a theatrical format.

Oakland Public Theater is a professional company based in the East Bay. Established in 1998, our mission is to reexamine the American experience by presenting not only new works, but also those traditional pieces capable of acknowledging our roots as a diverse culture. We strive for a theater that entertains, educates, and celebrates our whole community.

OPT was founded to contribute to the creative vitality of this city so central to the Bay Area, yet so often aesthetically overlooked. As both working artists of color and members of this community, we were no longer content to wait for the occasional ethnically-oriented production, or the typical token ‘person of color’ role which too often passes for diverse casting. OPT brings to the stage a world of all kinds of people, together, for better or worse. As it is in the world most of us live in.

Our last production, American Limbo, by writer and performer Deontay Wilson was also developed with the help of a CA$H grant. It was workshopped at the Marsh, and then fully mounted at the Magic Theatre, to strong critical response.

Norman Gee, Director The Artistic Director of the Oakland Public Theater, Mr. Gee has been an actor, director, teacher and a part of Bay Area theater for over a decade. As an actor he has worked with such companies as Word For Word, California Shakespeare Festival, Centralworks and others. He is also a member of the Bay Area Playwrights Foundation and serves on the Theatre Services Committee of TBA.

Richard Talavera, Playwright/Curator A Bay Area playwright for many years, whose works include The Trail of Los Siete and Rain forest Magic, he has worked extensively with Oral History projects. Mr. Talavera is an associate artist with Opera Piccola and Teatro de la Esperanza, and was the Artistic Director of Tale Spinners Theater.

Karina Welsh, Researcher/marketing Consultant A former librarian, Ms Welch received a MBA in Marketing and Finance at UC Berkeley, and has been a marketing consultant for over ten years. She has also promoted visual artists, speakers, authors, performers and musicians in Northern and Southern California

OPT's Richard Wright Centennial Project
next reading Earlier this month he staged a contemporary version of "Don Juan" at his alma mater, San Francisco State, and he'll oversee a new production of "Macbeth" with the Shotgun Players. In May, his production of "Yes, Yes to Moscow" with the Art Street Theatre will be included at the San Francisco International Arts Festival. We asked the Hayes Valley resident to give us a list of the places where he likes to do his thinking.
Emma's Coffee House, 1901 Hayes St. "Emma's is a simple, small, clean, comfortable neighborhood cafe with the usual drink and pastry offerings, as well as free Wi-Fi. I like it because it's quiet and relaxed. It's near the Haight, but not thronged with the tourists who pack the cafes there. I go to Emma's to do work, read, or to have business meetings that won't feel rushed by the atmosphere."
La Boulange de Hayes, 500 Hayes St. "In the '90s I lived in three different apartments around Hayes Valley, and watched it crawl from skank toward posh. I miss the days when the neighborhood was lingering somewhere between two worlds, before it made its final, total transformation into a wealthy hipster mecca. Now I feel out-priced there, but I do enjoy La Boulange during its off hours, when it's less crowded and I can enjoy the good coffee, pastries, and atmosphere without all the fashion and hipster chatter."
San Francisco Botanical Garden, Golden Gate Park, Ninth Avenue at Lincoln Way. "My gal pal and I often go for walks through Golden Gate Park and inevitably end up in the Botanical Garden. It's free, gorgeous, and a very calming place to walk, sit, meditate, or debate art and politics. I also like the old Russian folks, seated on benches in their heavy coats and fur hats, who seem to have been transplanted from Gorky Park."
Arizmendi Bakery, 1331 Ninth Ave. "This small, worker-owned bakery makes a lot of good things, but I always go for their pizza. They offer one kind of thin-crust pizza and the toppings change daily. It is always good, without fail, and makes a nice way to punctuate the end of a walk through the nearby Botanical Garden before heading back into the park or home."
Magnolia Pub & Brewery, 1398 Haight St. "A good, loud pub that brews its own eclectic roster of beer and serves up very tasty food. The food menu has become a bit overpriced for my tastes - a recent $13 bowl of clam chowder was so $8 - and as a result I find I'm increasingly less inclined to go there to eat. But the beer is excellent, creative, homemade stuff, still affordable and well worth a regular visit."
Sundance Kabuki Cinema, 1881 Post St. "The newly remodeled Kabuki is classy, uniquely designed, a green facility, sports the only cinema seating in town that my aching back actually feels comfortable sitting in, and - hallelujah! - does not show annoying television commercials prior to the film."
DSW Shoe Warehouse, 111 Powell St. "I hate shopping for clothes. Even more, I hate paying a lot of money for clothes. But unfortunately I also like to like what I'm wearing, and for it to fit me well. DSW has last year's line of shoes from good brands at discount prices. Since my shoes are my car, this is the place I usually go to buy new tires."
North Beach. "I used to hang out in North Beach a lot when I was in college. Typically I'd go to a tiny Chinese joint next to an old porn theater off Washington Square. For $3.50 the house chow mein kept me going all day. I would digest it farther up Columbus Avenue at Cafe Greco with a well-made cappuccino and a book, and that was my afternoon. The Chinese joint has since closed, but I still like to sit with a cappuccino and a book at Cafe Greco and pass a couple of hours failing to read while I watch people and think about the world."
Theater Salon at Last Planet Theatre, 351 Turk St. "The Theater Salon is something I've been involved with over the past year. Every three months or so a salon is thrown on the stage of Last Planet Theatre in the Tenderloin. A cross section of Bay Area theater artists, critics, administrators, and audience members gather to eat, drink, and talk seriously about the theater. It's an invite-only affair at present and always a stimulating event."
Original Joe's, 144 Taylor St. "I mourn the loss of this place, which was hit by a bad kitchen fire back in October. It's not that the food was spectacular by current foodie standards, but rather the cheap red wine and overly generous plates of ravioli were extremely satisfying in an old-school Italian American way. The authentic atmosphere wasn't designed to look retro. It actually was retro! The friendly, no-nonsense waiters wore tuxedos and spoke in accents one couldn't always place. It was a favorite hangout for Exit Theater artists and audiences for years and years, which is how I came to know it. I dearly hope they eventually reopen."

E-mail Aidin Vaziri at avaziri@sfchronicle.com. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
Copyright 2008 SF Chronicle

SFState Theatrenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2408735535630121466.post-89575146631175963372008-03-20T11:21:00.001-07:002008-09-05T14:28:06.599-07:00Rules for Room Reservations
The Theatre Arts Department is happy to reserve rooms to theatre arts majors for rehearsals and meetings, but we would appreciate it if you followed these basic guidelines.

1) Campsite rule: always leave the room better than you found it. Do not leave props, costumes, drinks, food, papers, trash, or anything behind in the rehearsal rooms. If you move furniture around, put it back the way you found it. If someone else has left props or furniture in the room that is obviously for a production or class, be courteous and do not use it. If it is in your way, set it aside and replace it at the end of your rehearsal. If you are a stage manager for a show, make sure that props and furniture are moved out of the way for classes and student rehearsals. Do not move pianos out of rooms they are assigned to.

2) CA 119 is for quiet meetings and homework. If you need to have a production meeting for your showcase or organization and would like to use 119, you must come to the office and reserve it. Students need to use that space for design homework and quiet study. If you need to use it for a meeting, we need to let design faculty and design students know the room is unavailable to them for a short time. It is unkind to hold meetings in that room without telling anyone. There are lots of places on campus to hold meetings, but very few places to do drafting homework. Again, we don’t normally rent out ca 119 because we want to leave it available for students. But if there is no other place you can hold your meeting, you must reserve it through the office. Main stages and faculty productions who are holding production meetings reserve through their stage manager and Nicole Mitchell.

3) If you did not reserve a room, you don’t have the right to stay in that room. If you are holding a rehearsal without a reservation, a group who has reserved can come and kick you out.
