9:00am to 12:30pm
CHB’s Bay Patrol Director, Jeff Barney, will be leading
kayakers in a trash pick up along the shoreline of
Commencement Bay from the water. Restoration Mgr,
Jeanine Riss, will be leading a group to collect debris
from several restoration sites along Marine View Dr.
Both groups will finish the day at Yowkwala Beach with a
picnic lunch. Kayakers please contact Jeff at

Esplanade Project

The esplanade construction project, that will affect parking for a bit on the north side of the marina & cause a few parking challenges and make a little noise, will be well worth the inconveniences! The work is scheduled to begin at the beginning of July (for this reason, and because of parking concerns over the 4th of July in past years we will not be giving guest parking permits during this holiday- please have your guests park in the republic lot on the south side of the Murray Morgan Bridge) we will keep you updated on the expected completion date and any changes to that plan in the monthly newsletter and on this blog.

It will be worth the small problems to have a boardwalk-type esplanade with shopping choices and other new ammenities. Please be patient with the intermediate stages because the end result will happen quicker than you think :)

Does the Marina have Talent? Because here comes America's Got Talent

The reality TV show “America’s Got Talent” is coming to Tacoma people. Well, according to their press release they are coming to Seattle, but the auditions are actually at the Tacoma Convention Center. G-10
What is “America’s Got Talent”?
Each week, the show features a colorful array of hopeful stars, including singers, dancers, comedians, contortionists, impressionists, jugglers, magicians and ventriloquists, all vying for their chance to strut and perform on stage in front of a panel of celebrity judges in the hopes they’ll be chosen a winner by the viewing audience.
Expect hoards of frantic fame seeking talented people to flood our town April 25-26. Especially when everyone finds S-11 out that new host Nick Cannon will be there.
From what we hear, the public is invited to come out and watch the auditions. Any takers?

Dark Parks

There are several state parks slated for permanent closure &/or "temporary closure" this legislative season as a measure to meet budgetary concerns. They are not being closed due to a lack of use or interest; they are busy parks that are being closed to keep a budget. A partial list of parks slated for closure are: Fort Casey, Larrabee, Millersylvania, Peace Arch, Flaming Geyser, Rainbow Falls, Potlatch & several others. As boaters, as campers, as hikers, as fisherman, as Washingtonians, we use these parks! We need these parks!

The parks you grew up with could turn into lawless zones costing the state even more money than the budget for simply maintaining the parks. Recovery of a park that has been closed is not an easy proposition either, but the legislature is facing difficult choices. Without our imput the officials may think of the money over the people. We should not let that happen.

Do you have your Boaters Safety Education yet?
The requirement is stepped to age as follows:

25 years and younger are required to have a safety card

30 years and younger are required to have a safety card

35 years and younger are required to have a safety card
By Jan 1st 2012
40 years and younger are required to have a safety card

50 years and younger are required to have a safety card

After 2014 -- all boaters are required to have a safety card
The Tacoma Police Department's Marine Services Unit will conduct a class on 5 Saturdays from April 18th to June 13th. This class will fulfill the course requirement for obtaining a state Boater Education Card. The class is given at 3701 S. Pine St and is free, but boaters will need to send their completion certificate I-18 and $10 application fee to the state to receive the Boater Education Card. Living aboard your vessel can be a challenge for people, because of space limitations, moisture and other issues that landlubbers don't face. We have several boaters that are new or returning liveaboard tenants and it is time to help them out a little bit.

The best information, though, comes from fellow boaters. Do you have a unique idea for space, storage or overcoming other hurdles that you would like to share with your fellow boaters? Please post it here so everyone can benefit.
Don't forget the Foss Waterway Liveaboard Association's Clean Green Boating Fair on May 2nd. That will be a great place to network with other boaters and find that piece of information that saves time, energy, space and headaches.
Living aboard can be fun- we can't wait until the weather gets better so we can prove it!

Free Vessel Safety Check

Saturday March 14th we will have the Coast Guard Auxillary members here to give vessel safety checks. If you are interested, please sign up in the marina office. If you are interested, but unable to make the March 14th B-12 date, let us know so that we can make other arrangements for your boat.

How to tell if your boat is suffering from S.A.D.

S.A.D. or Seasonal Affective Disorder can touch so many aspects of our Pacific Northwest experiences, but is your boat suffering from this condition? Read on and find out.

If your lines are so worn they wouldn't hold a bird if it landed on them, your boat may have S.A.D.
If your boat is still decorated for Christmas, or for that matter, Halloween, your boat may have S.A.D.
If you've tarped it off for so long you forgot the color, your boat is probably suffering the effects of S.A.D.
If your cabin is as damp as the outside hull, if the weeds growing off the bottom are taller than the mast, if the pirate on your flag has surrendered, your boat may be one of those with S.A.D.

Come check-out your boat and make sure it is still the happy place you spend your spare time in the warm weather. Don't let something that makes you HAPPY become S.A.D.

Changes in the weather have led to weakened imune systems around the office, or Randy brought it back from Hawaii (thanks Randy). Q-5 So, if we keep our distance, it's not personal.
