Confused in their expectations of netbooks, that’s their issue. If they don’t want their customers to be confused about their expectations of netbooks, they should check how they are also marketing these netbooks. If people get confused about

My netbook connected via Synergy to another laptop.

Anyhow, I think that this boils down to people not doing their homework. For sellers, or those who bundle netbooks with their services (like telcos), they should research on their offerings before they do the marketing so that they will not make messages that could lead their customers to confusion. It matters what they say in their marketing copy before anything else. Sometimes catchphrases and slogans are culprits in giving customers the wrong impression. I hope that those who are selling netbooks will learn how to NOT give false expectations. Especially because Linux on netbooks is not what users know about all the time. If they don’t want high return rates, then they should do their homework first. If they know that they might have to add trained customer service representatives who will be called for help, then they should make a way. Just because it’s a netbook with Linux shouldn’t make their customers that it is an inferior product.

As for those who are enticed by offers of bundled netbooks with their telco or something, they should do their research first. I personally use a netbook for work. But that’s because I know that I can use Ubuntu Netbook Remix on it and be happy. And even before that I asked around. My co-workers who are more knowledgeable about these matters did agree that with what they know about my work, they knew that the specs of the netbook I chose will work for me. A netbook is a tool after all and it’s up to me to see if it’s something I could work with or not. And this is something I could do even before buying it. I also know people who’ve bought netbooks for the convenience of travelling with a lightweight machine and still have the means to check their email and surf the internet.
So think things over before buying a Linux-powered netbook or before you decide to sell them. It’s better that way.

Post from: New Linux User

Read More... [Source: Linux Blogs2k - Posted by FreeAutoBlogger]

Some of the problems we have:

Temporary files which never get cleaned up

Duplicate files. Maybe those we’ve downloaded before. But never removed after using them or maybe we copied them in another directory aside from the download directory. (This happens to me too. Especially when I get careless.)

Empty directories. We get lots of these when we move files around.

For us to manage our files, a tool such as FSLint would surely help.

This utility helps you search through your file system in order to find out if you’ve got duplicates, bad names, name clashes, temp files, bad symlinks, bad IDs, empty directories, non-stripped binaries, redundant whitespace. It also shows you what packages are installed.

One of the things I am guilty of is that I keep installing all these packages when I try them out but I forget to remove them and the other files related to it afterwards. No wonder I don’t have as much disk space as I think I should have. And lots of duplicates. Geh. I fail at cleaning up and I hope to change that with FSLint.
The nice thing about the user interface is that you could select which category it should be looking for. Once you have selected it, click the “Find” button and it will give you a list of the files it sees. Once you have a list you could select the files for deletion one by one or you could enter the wildcard for you to select multiple files in an instant.

Try it and see your directories cleaned up, hopefully giving you a whole lot of space left. Also, they have a blog that’s not just about FSLint, but Linux in general so maybe you’d like to add them to your list.

Post from: New Linux User

[Source: Linux Blogs2k - Posted by FreeAutoBlogger]

Telco Planning provides consulting services to network operators that encompass technology evaluation, business plan modeling, network design, integration and installation.

Telco Planning has a long history of participating in the evolution of Carrier Grade Linux and being a conduit between vendors and carriers, said Amanda McPherson, vice president of marketing and developer programs, The Linux Foundation. Their expertise will be an important contribution to the Linux Foundation and all of its members as Linux becomes even more pervasive in network environments.

Weve been closely monitoring Linux development and advising clients on how to implement open source software for two decades. And now, with the Linux Foundations inclusive membership packages, were able to make our participation official, said Kelly Daniels, president, Telco Planning. Were looking forward to actively contributing to the Linux Foundation workgroups and collaborating with the best of best in the Linux community at the organizations annual events.

Telco Planning works with network operators to take technologies from concept to operational product to full deployment. It develops prototypes with its customers that include Linux and open source software as the foundation.

The Linux Foundations Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) workgroup is focused on interfacing with network equipment providers and carriers to gather requirements and produce specifications that Linux distribution vendors can implement. It also works as a community to translate requirements into development projects that assist in their upstream integration.

About the Linux Foundation
The Linux Foundation is a nonprofit consortium dedicated to fostering the growth of Linux. Founded in 2007, the Linux Foundation sponsors the work of Linux creator Linus Torvalds and is supported by leading Linux and open source companies and developers from around the world. However, I am just a newbie when it comes to sewing using a sewing machine so curves are really not easy for me right now. Anyhow, I’ve been looking at some T-shirt surgery guides and I think that some of them are fairly easy to follow. There are two things I’d like to do with some of my shirts.

Use the entire shirt as a bag. Well, if not the entire shirt, then the body of the shirt. The sleeves could be discarded or used for something else altogether. There’s a guide to using an old shirt as a tote bag. That one’s fairly easy because the main material is the shirt, then thread and 2 big buttons. The sleeves will be cut off, the bottom part of the shirt will become the handle and it will be sewn at the shoulder part of the shirt. The neckline is the opening. Another idea for the shirt as a bag is a drawstring knapsack. Obviously, the sleeves will be discarded again. This will be awesome for shirts with really big prints. I have yet to look for a pattern for a drawstring knapsack. I suppose there is one that doesn’t require grommets because I don’t have tools for that.

Use the design on something else. Make the design into something like a patch. I have some Linux shirts with cool prints. It’s just that they’ve gotten so worn already but some of the prints seem to be useful because they haven’t been damaged. One could make them into patches, probably. Or simply sew them onto bags or shirts, maybe even pillow cases just to show Linux love. I might actually do that for myself when I get some fabric paint so that I could express myself in a creative manner while advocating Linux.

Who says advocating and showing love for Linux needs to be expensive, right? Making your own Linux crafts is unique. At the same time, you manage to have new things even if you’re experiencing recession.

Post from: New Linux User

[Source: Linux Blogs2k - Posted by FreeAutoBlogger]

Issues that need to be addressed include: course management as well as ensuring that the training room is managed well so that learners can focus on the lessons and not be distracted by other applications.

Let the Training Room Come into Order with iTalc

Today, I’ve learned about iTalc. It is an application that lets you manage your training room’s computers by ensuring that your students will not be distracted. If you are the trainer, then you can do the following:

View snapshots of each unit - just so you could check if they’re still doing their exercises or if they’re goofing off already. Better yet, you could use this monitor if they’re just passing messages to each other.

Lock all the computers so that they will listen to what you are trying to explain. This will be very handy when you are explaining the instructions of an exercise.

Remote control of computers. In case one of your learners needs some assistance, you could access it without a hitch and you could help him/her.

Allow access to the network even if the learner is remote. As long as your learner has the iTalc client, then he/she can join via VPN-connections. He/She doesn’t need to be left behind by her peers.

The developers have made this software available for Linux and Windows users but especially those with Debian and Ubuntu Linux, as well as Windows XP. The minimum hardware requirements are listed here. Ubuntu LTSP users of iTalc have a specific guide too.

Moodle Gets the Distance Education Classes Going

Managing a group of learners not interacting with you face to face might not be easy. It’s not the same as guiding someone personally. Some people don’t really do well with just emails and forums. As a teacher, you’d need to announce deadlines, etc. With Moodle you could do that too.

Other things you could do with Moodle:

Manage a student profiles. People can enlist in your class and you would be able to view their profiles and let your students manage their profiles too.

Have a place for your reading lists, course outline, etc. Whatever is relevant for your course, it’s possible to put them all on Moodle.

You could also manage your Moodle setup so that you could make the students more comfortable in their native language since it supports 70+ languages. If ever, students can select the language of their choice too. This is especially for those with a students from everywhere.

Moodle supports various media and file formats. This would hopefully enhance the courses so that students will have a variety of material to choose from and learn from.

If you’re thinking about how to make learning better for your trainees or those who are interested in having their training with you but they are so far away, Moodle seems to be a good choice.

Post from: New Linux User

[Source: Linux Blogs2k - Posted by FreeAutoBlogger]

Admittedly some of the web services are a very
big deal for Gentoo, like our Bugzilla service, running on 4 machines sponsored
by the Dutch social network, Hyves. Very recently we’ve gotten new hardware for
Forums, sponsored by Gossamer Threads. The next largest slice after that is the
machines that provides rsync.gentoo.org service. Only then do we get down to
individual machines for purposes. There’s some cases where having more hardware
as fail-over in case we lose a machine would be nice, but I think the place
that’d we would benefit the most presently would be a newer mail server
infrastructure, so that we can deploy heavier spam filtering.”

Robin H. There’s a two-part article on Linux Insider by Jack Germain. The first part talks about Linux sharing a room with Windows, and the second part talks about migrating to Linux without separation anxiety.

Ah yes. The experience of moving from Windows to Linux. It’s always something interesting to read because each one has a different story to tell. Some people do migrate to Linux immediately because they want to just get familiar right away and others take their time. Both are perfectly fine in my eyes because each of those methods seem to work best with particular types of people.

Linux from Within Windows

The first article talked about this and if not for the article, I wouldn’t have known that there’s such a thing as Portable Ubuntu. It lets you load Ubuntu while you are using Windows. You could run apps from within Ubuntu even if you are on Windows. One good thing about using Portable Ubuntu is that you don’t need to set up a virtual machine. And you don’t need to worry about rebooting, which is what you do with a live CD.

I wonder if other Linux distros are already available as a portable type of OS. I think that if users get to use it often enough, they would probably think of Linux distros as nothing too alien. Well, there’s always virtualization of the distro of their choice is not available as a portable version.

Migrating painlessly

The second part of the article talks about migrating painlessly from Windows to Linux. I saw that he talked about trying out free and open source software while he was in Windows. A lot of times people complain about not having anything to use in Linux but really, if they get exposed to other software, they’d most likely feel more comfortable about switching.

Getting familiar with new applications to regain the efficiency you had is not always easy. There would be times that you’d still look for that keyboard shortcut that you’ve been used to but it’s not always possible that things will work in the same way. In any case, if one does take enough time to learn new applications, then that’s something very good, especially when he/she switches to Linux.

I hope that more and more people will appreciate Linux more. Experiences like the ones mentioned above is simply awesome. I hope you get to share it with your friends.

Post from: New Linux User

[Source: Linux Blogs2k - Posted by FreeAutoBlogger]

All the supported systems have a common root. Id imagine that at least supporting Ubuntu LTS might be something desirable, since that is aimed at being stable and offering long term support.”

I forwarded this to our management team and they are asking what we need to do to provide better support. I would appreciate any comments that you may have - to start the ball rolling here are some of my own thoughts.

- Provide DEB packaged versions of ASM with scripts that work on Debian based distributions (to avoid having to convert the rpm and manually edit and setup the init scripts) - see http://linux.adaptec.com/2007/11/15/how-do-i-get-adaptec-storage-manager-to-work-with-ubuntu-710/

- Provide support for users other than root to have admin privilege within ASM since the root account is often disabled or password less - an issue raised by Thomas. On this subject, although not yet publically available, the next version of ASM provides “administrator” equivalent privilege in the GUI for user account aac if a member of the wheel group as an alternative to using the root account.

- Perhaps, as Vincent suggests, adding Ubuntu LTS to our validation and test matrix and potentially include a driver deb package for folk who wish to use the latest if this would be useful.

Please add your comments. I will be away for a week but would like to present them to the management team mid August.

thanks, Phil

[Source: Linux Blogs2k - Posted by FreeAutoBlogger]

Still, with so many netbooks running specs that are just too low for daily use, the charge remains that many distros can run on them no problem. Sure, unless you use YouTube or anything else that is not viewing a website from 1999.

Look, netbook or notebook, get as many hardware upgrades as possible when shooting for the low end. While you might not really need the next Dual-core system with four GBs of RAM, it would also be cool to be able to edit documents without it taking all day for them to load.

Should you steer clear of the VIA setups? For me, I break it down this way. Never buy from an OEM unless they are also providing you with aftermarket support. If this is too much trouble, then you need to think the hardware you are about to select.

[Source: Linux Blogs2k - Posted by FreeAutoBlogger]

I am very pleased to be contributing to KDE and the community, and want to make us the best we can be!

State of things:
To be honest things are not going good For lots of different reasons progress has been stagnant on the project. There have been changes in the plan, and now focus will switch to do refactoring on a more textual level (instead of the initially planned purely conceptual level). I am currently working on the refactor framework, and a refactoring concept to “make a class implementation private” or as it is known in QT and KDE: the ‘d’ pointer.

What to do now?
Well I have met up seriously with my mentor, and we have discussed in what direction things should go now. Focus will switch to implement refactor concepts only until we have a decent enough framework, so concept implementation can become easier

Track plan:
Merge branch into trunk
Set up unit-testing environment
Hunt down selection context bug
commit first iteration of MakeImplementationPrivate
Implement temporary file changes and reparse of DuChain/AST

This last task seems quite complex, so more collaboration with the kdevelop team will be needed, however it is essential for any kind of decent refactoring concept

More details as they arrive!

[Source: Linux Blogs2k - Posted by FreeAutoBlogger]

My take? Who cares. It seems silly to continue on with those pointless “boycott NVIDIA” rants that we see everywhere when the fact of the matter is, going with ATI is not really “better”. No, I say good for them. If they feel that Windows CE (not Win Mobile) is where they want to be, whoopie for them.

Frankly with as much trouble as NVIDIA has with drivers on any platform, I doubt it will matter much anyway. I have not been able to remember a single new Windows release in which NVIDIA wasn’t dead last in getting it right. Actually, the truth is that NVIDIA has seen better support on Linux in not screwing up than it has on Windows, but this is just my own experiences with countless cards and PCs.

NVIDIA knows full well that Windows CE is a “safe” bet for them. Because Windows is expected to be a market leader with netbooks, NVIDIA is following the money and leaving common sense at the back of the bus as per usual. So good luck to the video card maker, supporting a Windows styling that has been plagued with issues over the years. From what I understand, this release of Windows CE is “different”.
