Moosehead Lake from a visitors seaplane ride looks like the head of a Moose. Can you see it? This picture was taken last week as a guest took a ride with Jack's Air Service, right here in Greenville, Maine. The lake is 20 miles by 40 miles and is the largest instate lake east of the Mississippi River. Taking a seaplane ride is one of two very popular activities for vacationers. The other activity is of course a Moose Safari. Moose can also be spotted from the air, with a keen eye.

This bull moose was recently spotted within a mile of the Lodge at Moosehead Lake. He has been living in this area for about ten years. Take a Moose Safari from the Lodge and you maybe lucky enough to see him too.

Lodge at Moosehead Lake Opens for Dinner Service

The Lodge opened for dinner service last night and is now open Friday, Saturday and Sunday through Columbus Day weekend in mid-October. Chef Abby Freethy kicks off the season with her Maine Lobster, Parsnip and Asparagus Dumplings, Grilled Filet of Beef, Crayfish & Spinach Stuffed Native Trout and many other Up North specialties. Dennis and Chloe enjoy the Moosterpiece Craft Fair in Greenville Maine on Saturday morning. It was a great day to view local art and crafts only a couple miles from the Lodge at Moosehead Lake. This was one of many events in the Moosehead area to honor the Moose. Other events included the 15th Annual Moose River Canoe & Kayak Race in Rockwood.

Keeping our wine list current and enjoyable requires ongoing maintenance. Dennis and Linda attended a wine tasting sponsored by our distributor in Bar Harbor. As Dennis says, "This is a tough job, but someone has to do it." We were looking for a great Sauvignon Blanc and less oak Chardonnay based on guests requests.

The Lodge received its 15th AAA Four Diamond Award this week. We quickly arranged the most current awards in our foyer and made room for the new highly coveted plaque. We are very proud of this award; it truely shows the effect we put into making the Lodge the wonderful place it is. The Lodge is inland Maine's ONLY AAA Four Diamond property and to have earned it for fifteen consecutive years is quite an accomplishment.

Dog Sledding From the Lodge

Ann Marie and Michael from Long Island were recent guests at the Lodge celebrating their anniversary. They enjoy winter and this was not their first dog sledding adventure, but it was their best. Booked through the Lodge, their Maine guide took them through a wonderful scenic ride, experiencing everything from harnessing the dogs, running the team, to helping cool down.

New snow at the Lodge as of 8:00 am this morning. About 20 inches on the ground now.

It's now noon and we are still digging out only to learn more coming this afternoon. We have guests to leave and guests coming in tomorrow. What a winter wonderland in Maine.

Winter Maintenance

After over 8 inches of snow yesterday, Robert McGee, the Maintenance Manager at the Lodge, is here bright and early to be sure all paths are shoveled and the drive way is clear for guests to easily come and go. Robert has worked at the Lodge for more than 10 years. He works hard to be sure the grounds are beautiful winter or summer and that every guest is happy We "love" Robert.

Valentine's Day Dinner

It was a full house for dinner at the Lodge at Moosehead Lake. Guests were treated to a 5-course dinner prepared by Chef Jack. Featured were our famous Maine Peekytoe Crab Cakes and our very own Moosehead Lake Lobster Bake including grilled Maine Lobster with Rope Grown Mussels in a Creamy Corn Fumet over Mac & Cheese. And of course, there was chocolate! It was a beautiful way to celebrate the love of your life, just be sure your table is reserved early for 2010. Lodging guests came back to their rooms to find, hand dipped chocolate strawberries before retiring for the evening.

New Year's Eve 2008

The Lodge offered a 5-course New Year's Eve Dinner with seatings at 6:00 and 8:00 pm. Guests enjoyed options of appetizers, entrees and desserts along with a soup and salad course. Participation was up over last year and even though the weather was very cold, guests enjoyed a cozy and delicious celebration to ring in the new year...it is becoming clear that the only way to guarantee participation in New Years at the Lodge is to reserve your rooms and dinner seats early!

Chloe Adds to Relaxation at Lodge

Chloe, the Lodge French Bulldog, takes her job seriously. Guests often come to the Lodge to relax and enjoy the great views of Moosehead Lake. Chloe is here to help. She knows they miss their dogs. She is always the first to greet a new guest and provides special affection that only Chloe can do.

Lodge Goes Green

The recent installation of an outdoor wood furnace is part of the Lodge's commitment to "Go Green" where ever we can. This unit will allow us to greatly reduce our dependence on heating oil and control heating costs. The original oil burning system remains available as a backup.

The outdoor furnace is tucked away in a small grove of spruce trees. Out of sight, but conveniently close to the Lodge. The growing pile of slit firewood is testimony to some honest labor in the crisp north woods air. Guests tell us the occasional smell of the wood fire adds to the Lodge ambience.

Sailing on Moosehead Lake

This week the lake has been wonderful. The pictures are of an excursion we took with a friend's sailboat on Moosehead Lake. The lake is 20 miles x 40 miles, plenty of space for sailing and what wonderful sights we see, from cabins, many islands, loons, geese, motor craft and much more.
