I've come to question the value of putting everything out there on the www for just anyone to read. I've stopped wanting to share so much information. Which is too bad, b/c looking over my old posts, I love reliving those memories. I'm trying to find a solution - maybe a personal journal... How did my generation come to be so bold about their dear diaries... Really? We need more? LOL.

Watch out, world. Texas has licensed yet another lawyer.

The most important part of the 2008 Texas State Bar Exam Pass List:

Chapman,Lauren Jennifer, , ,3602
Charnitski,Jonathan Wotell, , ,3053
Chase,Amanda Lynn, , ,3160
Chase,John Harold, , ,1056
Chastain,Laura Lee, , ,1783
Chelly,Frank David, , ,1770

I had a dream the other night. I was back in college at the University of North Texas. We were sitting in the courtyard at the dorm. My friends were asking me, why are you so old. I told them, "I'm only 27, that's not old at all." But then I thought, no, I'm still 23. How did I get to be 27? I was really troubled about this in my dream. I went through my life sequence. Graduate high school 18, Begin college, Father dies 19, Second year college, Third year college 20, Fourth year college 21, Meet Joshua 22, Move to D.C., Get married 23, Move to Houston. Then, I couldn't remember anything. Total blank. What happened after I moved to Houston between 23 and 27? Oh dear. I've been in a coma, or a time warp, or worse.... law school. I didn't figure out what happened during those years of my life until I woke up, rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and rolled over to look at sleeping Joshua. My subconscious had completely removed law school from my dream world. How lovely.

I became a new person in those three years. A more critical, concerned, and careful person. A more cynical person. I learned to think. I learned to listen. (Thank you Professor Weigel.) I learned how to learn. I grew. I became hermit-like. I developed a love for sushi. I forgot how to read for pleasure. Reality shows like Project Runway were great escapes, but made me feel very guilty. Saturdays were work days. Bedtime was negotiable. I now type at superman speed. Overall, I wouldn't have done it any differently. Though, I'm not sure I would do it all over again.

I have struggled with whether I should encourage my youngest sister to go to law school. She is far sharper than me, and a million times more compassionate. She would excel. She could and I'm sure will, take over the world one day. But its impossible to describe the kinds of changes that must occur within you in order to excel. Are those changes good? Is the responsibility too great?

I did my absolute best in preparing to take the Bar Exam. Never have I been so disciplined, every day, hour after hour. Before the exam began, I reassured myself that there was nothing else that I could have possibly done. I completed every task assigned. I used every hour that I could. I took as many tests as time allowed. I managed my sleep, my health, and my time to the best of my abilities. I knocked my socks off. I was impressed at my stamina. And at the end of three months, I was worthless. So, how do parents do it - raise kids - for years - every day, every hour? Thats the only thing that I can imagine compares to the kind of effort we put forth this summer.

Joshua was my king. So supportive, so sweet. Helped me to balance life this summer. Keep things in perspective. Reminded me that the world would not, in fact, end tomorrow if I did not pass. Can't describe how much I love him. He knows it without me saying so. :) I talk enough as it is.

My only advice for future Texas Bar Exam takers is to do your very best, every day, starting at the beginning of the summer. The better you can get ahold of concepts early, the more you will be able to memorize at the end of the summer. Memorization is basically the heart of the exam. I freaked out less because I was diligent early. It kept me calm, and in control. My mental health the three months after the exam before results came out was significantly better than some of my peers because I knew I had done everything that I could over the summer.

Very grateful for the love and support of family and friends in this 3 year journey. Couldn't have done it without you. Much love - ALC

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_mVxcdOj_8ik/STHIRoFaibI/AAAAAAAAACg/Un_sVdBkLps/s200/DSCN1810.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274216843771021746" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_mVxcdOj_8ik/STHIB5HzQUI/AAAAAAAAACY/4J8umDjHm00/s200/DSCN1792.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274216573466526018" />

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://foggybottom3.blogspot.com/2008/11/amanda-l-chase-esq.html' title='A new lawyer. The PH in Foggy Bottom's urine was tooo high, causing him to have crystals in his cat-pee, and pain when he had to use his litter box. Foggy Bottom, how appropriately named, has to be on special cat food to help the PH levels get back down to normal. Unfortunately, Shady Grove hates the food, and while she will lick her own booty, won't touch the new kibbles. I've tried a variety of things. I tried mixing the new wet food w/the new dry food, putting out the new wet food and dry food alone, putting a little cheese on the food (don't be mad at me Dr. Oeben), mixing their standard kibbles w/the new kibbles. This last technique has proved the most successful, except that I found Shady rooting around for the standard kibbles and avoiding the new kibbles this morning. What a tricky little cat.

Shady Grove does serve as an excellent exterminator, however. Our new house has beautiful shady trees, which creates an area that attracts giant winged mosquitos. Shady Grove is like King Kong Kitty sweeping helicopters out of the sky when she attacks these pests. Her jaw makes a terrific chomping sound as she shovels the bug into her mouth. When the kitties spy a bug, its like tunnel vision killing.

Can't wait to have yall to the new house. Its so beautiful and Joshua & I couldn't be happier. We are still only 1/2 unpacked, but next week is Spring Break, and I'll have a few extra hours to play house. :) Much love from the cat family -

Lien Free!

The seller on our adorable little house got the IRS to remove the liens! Closing is Feb. 29, so maybe we only pay property taxes every 4 years, yeah? Also, I look like an authentic Texan b/c Joshua & I bought our first truck today. Also a pic of me in my last day of Monkey Jammies. :)

December What?

What's the date? December 9th? How is that possible?! The last day I remember is November 20th. I've been in some kind of Bermuda Triangle. But now finals are OVER! Woo hoo! I'm going to waste the next several days of my life catching up on my Tivo'd shows. The Monkeys are in the washer, and my semester books & notes are stacked under my desk wooing dust bunnies.

You wanna know something really sad? Some of that last paragraph is a lie. I watched about 5 hours of TV and I'm tired of it. I'm actually sitting at my desk working on a paper, because I really want to. I really missed my computer and sitting at my little study desk in my study cubby. Ouch, the truth hurts. So why all the bitching and complaining? I don't really know. I know I hear a lot of it from my friends, and likewise they hear it from me. And I semi-enjoy the pitty party. I guess most of it is summarized by my better and cuter half. On Joshua's MySpace page, he writes:

"I'm training for the Houston marathon in January so if you see me gimping around you'll know why. I don't know why I'm doing this really. Maybe I like to make people feel bad about themselves but that's not the main reason I guess. I probably just want to have people feel sorry for me. You also probably assume I'm doing it for some sort of cause. I'm not and that's only and added benefit to aid in my martyrdom and is not a factor in my running."

Yeah, we're a couple of heros, real mentor material. Sign me up to be a Big Sister. Wait, I'm a miserable example. *Has a drink before noon and continues working on her paper.*

Holidays Schmolidays

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_mVxcdOj_8ik/R0dfLmjE0ZI/AAAAAAAAAAc/SZvLej-OJAY/s320/DSCN1573.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5136178552970203538" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_mVxcdOj_8ik/R0de_mjE0YI/AAAAAAAAAAU/S_n8wuMJSm8/s320/DSCN1571.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5136178346811773314" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_mVxcdOj_8ik/R0dewWjE0XI/AAAAAAAAAAM/IHpMZ6kfcbQ/s320/DSCN1562.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5136178084818768242" />
I'm looking forward to the days when holidays don't equal dread. (Though popular culture and holiday comedies don't give me any confidence in this possibility.) For the sad law student, Thanksgiving means anxiety b/c finals are just around the corner. Ew, this semester is the worst. Makes me want to puke. Too late, just did. I look forward to next turkey day when I can stuff myself into a coma and sleep away the afternoon without nightmares about my Corporations final. Also, this is the third year I will spend my birthday in my study cubby. Lame.

But its almost over. Fifteen more days of monkey jammies and finals. Ashamedly, I have a sticky note on my desk that reads, "you can do it, its almost over!"

Hope you enjoy the pics of our recent holiday endeavors. That's what we were supposed to be for Halloween. Well, there is a twist... Joshua was not going to be Baby Bear, though if you saw the one piece bear costume Emily and I made for him several years ago (captioned below), there would be an encore for sure. That, and I think Joshua would be a sight in a skirt. I vetoed his costume idea that involved placing a sheep in an compromising position on his body. Yep, Joshua grew up on a farm. The stories I haven't heard.

We would have attended the Halloween parties we were invited to (I know, I'm surprised that we have friends, too) but getting us to leave the house is like trying to squeeze the last dab of toothpaste from a crusty tube. The wildest thing we will have done this year is play a drinking game to Antiques Roadshow. We hear the description of the item, put the show on pause at the conclusion of the facts (thank goodness for Tivo), write down our individual estimates, and then resume view to find out whose bid was the closest. The person who guesses closest takes a drink. I always win, which means I always loose. That's as crazy as we get. At home. In pajamas. Bottle of wine. Woo freak'n hoo.

This weekend will be another rave-like event. Me in my cubby finishing a paper. Joshua in his man chair-power station, creating new spreadsheets. Only a couple more of those wknds until semester five is over. Can't come soon enough. *Hearing Joshua in the back of my mind, "That's what she said."* Oh dear.

Sending love from us four kitties.

Handcuffs, Cheese and Cat dumps

OMG friends. I am so embarrassed that I have neglected the blog for so long. My blogging mentor Heather reminded me several weeks ago about the shameful blog status, and I just sat on it like the lazy walrus I am. I don't deserve to be a blogger. My account should have been terminated.

Social Updates: While neglecting school, I checked my Facebook account. There is a new application on Facebook called "Compare People." The pictures of two of your friends pop up before you and then you anonymously compare them. Questions range from, who is the most trustworthy to who would you rather be handcuffed to. Evidently, I'm among the top of my friends list when it comes to "hard worker" and "trustworthy" but only one person wants to be handcuffed to me. I can be fun, promise! I was a little hurt by this. Evidently, I'm not as pretty as the other people on Facebook either. I'll remedy this by wearing less clothing. There appears to be some kind of relationship between popularity and skin exhibitions. Seeing that I haven't had any sun in the last, um 25 years... doubtful. I have subsequently terminated the "Compare" application in an attempt to restore my shattered self esteem. Ha!

School updates: I'm in the final lap. Only one more year to go. So excited. A little tired b/c still working 30 hrs/week. But the job is the best part. Getting the protective orders for our applicants is so rewarding, and talking to the respondents is the most interesting EVER! I feel like I'm part of some massive social science experiment and a wizard is going to appear from a big velvet curtain and say, Just kidding, can't believe you thought that was real! Its unbelievable the things human beings will do to each other. Had an interview w/DA's office btw, and am crossing my fingers for a callback. Talk about a dream job!

Life updates: Recently discovered that I have high cholesterol. Guess its in the jeans. That, and my unhealthy obsession with cheese. Someone should have me institutionalized for my failure to control my mac 'n cheese intake. Clearly, the problem has unloosed itself. Fortunately, the family has put the dairy goodness in a fool proof lock box. Speaking of fam, Joshua just may return to a full-time husband. Looks like his traveling may take a break for a couple of weeks, knock on wood. Kitties are happy. Tried to take them for check-ups recently though, and Shady was so pissed-off that she climbed on top of me in the car and took a massive dump on my beautiful "I'm a badass" suit. (my suits have moods) When I tried to throw the floaters out the car window, it just so happened that the ONLY person in Houston that cares about the environment thought I was littering and proceeds to "digitally" f--- me and honk his horn. It's freak'n biodegradable.

Promise to provide more consistent updates. Sending hugs - ALC

Joshua's Update

I am apparently close to ending my repetitive trek to Birmingham, Al that I've been making since last July. I may be done at the end of June and from there I plan on doing a whole lot of 9-to-5's in the Houston office and take a lot of long coffee and lunch breaks as I try to get back in a normal schedule again. I miss being home with my 3 cats at night.

The Cardinals are beginning to creep out of their funk. They keep finding new ways to make this season a struggle but I'm pretty sure now that they are tired of getting humiliated and will continue to fight for wins. They don't have the raw talent that they've enjoyed since 2004 but they are pretty damn scrappy at this point and I'd much rather see them struggle into the playoffs than coast in as the previous 3 years have clearly shown. Through all the struggles this year it is still early June and they are down 6.5 games to the upstart Brewers who are, conceivably, playing well above there natural level. As long as no one else catches fire (read: Cubs/Astros), we will be okay. Both Mulder and Carpenter are coming back, our MV3 should produce at near historical levels or at least better than the beginning of the season and the injury bug should subside long enough for us to get some streaks going.

In other news, I'm a disgusting fat-body and I may need diet intervention soon. I either eat unbelievably healthy or really terrible.

Case in point: This weekend I consumed 2 whole frozen pizzas, 8 mini corndogs, 1 huge ham sandwich, 1 BBQ plate, 2 ice cream sandwiches, 2 slices of peach pie (to my credit I had ice cream only once with the two slices), 8 or 10 Sushi rolls and an estimated 15 beers. I can't seem to think of an example of eating really healthy but you get the point.

That's about it, I gotta go eat some bratwursts before I pass out for the night. I miss home.

Monkeys In the Washer

Exams are finally over, which means monkey jammies jumped the washing machine last night. (see previous blog entry) They were such great troopers over the last two and a half weeks. But now, they are ready to give another pair of jammies a chance to keep me snugly and warm. Though seasonally inappropriate, maybe I'll don the snowmen jammies that my auntie gave me. But I guess snowmen would always be seasonally inappropriate in TX, no matter the "season," whether it be summer, or summer. Though snowmen prolly won't be as cute in haikus. (a prev blog reference... for those of you who were also stuck in exams, not checking blogs)

After a whole semester of 15 hrs/week of classes and 20 hrs/week of work, an 8-5 work day sounds so easy. This is going to be a great week. I start my summer classes, Secured Transactions and my writing project next week, but this week my evenings are totally devoted to catching up on television and going to bed as soon as the tylenol p.m. kicks in. Tonight, I fired up a Red Barron frozen pizza, thin-crust, supreme variety, and devoured the entire 10,000 calories while catching up on the last three weeks episodes of Gray's anatomy. Its about 3x the amount of fat I should have in a week. Oh, the pizza was good too. :)

Laptop and I have really bonded this semester. I thought I would be sick of her after exams, but today is the first day of freedom and I find myself curled up in under my snugly blanky in my sleigh bed warmed by my friend, laptop. I think she needs a name. Any ideas?

Monkey Jammies

My best girl Emmy sent me the sweetest care package before my first semester of law school finals. I know, I'm very lucky, she's amazing. In the care package was a set of pajamas with Monkeys on them. It has become a tradition for me over the past 2 years to wear my monkey jammies during the weeks while I was studying for finals. As appreciation, I drafted a set of "Haikus Honoring Monkey Jammies" last fall while procrastinating at the beginning of finals. Thanks again Emms. The monkeys have really helped.

Ode To Monkey Jammies

Oh Monkey Jammies
You keep me snug'ly and warm
My favorite pair

Monkeys are so cute
Reminding me of good things
Helping through exams

Monkeys arrived one
Year and a half ago and
Golly, I was glad

They came in a box
With finals goodies tucked in
I wore them daily

Fifteen days on me
Loyal true monkey jammies
Breakfast lunch dinner

Sobs spills sadness sleep
Study Sloppy Celebrate
Through all emotions

Put them on today
Eighteen days left my monkeys
Finals will be hard

We got through last time
We can do it again friends
Are you up for it?

Yes! the monkeys cheer
You wear us for eighteen days
And we bring you luck!

Emms is the best friend
We will tell her that we love
The monkey jammies

And thank her for the
Many other things she does
She's special to us

Eighteen more days left
Finals will be over soon
Monkeys will be glad!

Fortunately, I have two finals down, and only three to go. Will finally be done Monday the 14th! Much celebration. I really need to prioritize.

I have made lotsa new friends in the last two years since we moved to Houston. I need to email them the "email manifesto." For your reading pleasure, I've attached it below. Its an email I sent out to my e-buddies when they get too forward happy. Just a few guidelines, warnings, and threats that are central to my personal web-ethics. Below is the Christmas version. I send it out when Christmas songs start playing in the department stores because I have found a direct correlation between Jingle Bells and email forwards about reindeers.

And contrary to what Dallas folks think, Houston isn't so bad. Since the Astros play the Cardinals all the time, Joshua is relatively happy. He has gone to all the Cardinals games here, and is filled with glee and sprinkles when he comes home. When I accompany him, I glady partake in the nacho activities. It's like chip soup, and the soup is can cheese, 4x reheated chilli, chunky Pace salsa, hot sour creme, and jalapenos. OMG. I can't even describe to you the funness. Like seeing Miles Davis in concert. You just start drooling and your eyes glaze over and your heart expands like the Grinch after he as restored Christmas to the Whos in Whoville. When you ask the cashier for more cheese, they don't frown, but they smile because Houstonians recognize the spiritual and holy nature of canned nacho cheese.

Anyways, one last blog post before the insanity of finals takes hold and destroys my intestinal fortitute where I will be constrained to my little home and my monkey jammies.

Oh, and happy b.day to my best girl, Emmy. I love you girl.

AMANDA LYNN’S EMAIL MANIFESTO

The holidays are approaching and I know that you may be tempted to send me email forwards containing reindeer pictures, manger references, snow storm survival stories that happened the night before Christmas. Therefore, I have decided to supply you with the guidelines of sending forwarded mail to me.... For future reference, violators of the following restrictions on e-mails will be disciplined in the following ways:

• First time offenders: Warning along with another copy of the manifesto
• Second time offenders: Warning along with a torrent of emails with extremely large files.
• Third time offenders: Termination from the address book and a block on your emails.

Choose wisely in what is sent over the communication lines to me, my friend, I would like you to remain as such.

1. No mention of any kind of fruits, citrus or otherwise.
2. If the phrase, "Send this to 10 of you friends” and you will have a special day appears anywhere near the e-mail forget it!
3. If you got it from a forward at work, rest assured that I’ve already read it.
4. The chain letters will not be tolerated. If “something bad will happen to you if you don’t email this immediately” occurs w/in the text, its probably too late because something bad has already happened to me by just reading it.
5. It CANNOT contain any poems or poem-like phrases, whether deep or shallow.
6. If the e-mail has a moral, (For example: Don't drink and drive) I don't want to hear it! That's what shows on the WB are for.
7. If it contains any warnings or threats, keep it to yourself. Good ol’ G.W.B. would think that your email is un-patriotic, and I'm already on too many lists.
8. No reference to princess Di or any other deceased celebrity
9. Note* if it has been around the world nine times it will stop at my house so don't bother.
10. Mentions of roses or other things that smell and grow in dirt are simply not acceptable
11. If it discusses, 'The touch, the feel, of cotton,' you know something's wrong right away.
12. If it includes instructions on building nuclear weapons as well as other types of artillery it will probably just get me in trouble with the FBI, and I'll blame the whole thing on you anyway.
13. Should not require excessive scrolling. I get the urge to commit ax-murder after about 4 seconds. (Remember these rules only apply to forwarded mail, not original compositions.)
14. No repeating letters. (Such as WWW or KKK) They either make me dizzy or religiously offended.
15. No asinine questions about meat products. Example: "If you were a hot dog...and you were starving...would you eat yourself?"
16. Absolutely no twenty page list of your favorite hobbies, movies and pastimes or how you are going to devote your life and body to scientific research.
17. Positively no light bulb jokes will be tolerated- after all I have probably doubted that even you could figure out how to screw in a light bulb.

I hope these rules will help you in choosing more wisely on you next forward to me.

(Please be aware that the rules and regulations posted within the preceding text are subject to change, editing, and the induction of additional restrictions. If any of these cases may occur. The recipient will be provided with an updated version that will be expected to be upheld within 10 days of receipt.)

Amanda Lynn

PS. For the most part this is in good fun; please take no personal offense. Please be cautious, though, in sending your next forward to me.

Amanda Lynn & Things are going so well here. The honeymoon was PERFECT. Never been anywhere so beautiful as Maui. Surfing and snorkeling and sushi-ing. Will post pics soon. Holiday w/fam was awesome, too. Spent 1 wk in New Orleans doing legal aid - so rewarding and good to give back. Now we're back to school and work. I'm on a new job with Family Criminal Law Div in the DA's office. Joshua still on the same project. With the new year, we have made new goals. Joshua's goal is to work out 2x/week and my goal is to be soda-free for 1 year. I think we can do it! Big projects going on at school. A public interest career fair in early Feb that we have been working on for a year now. So exciting to get people involved in public interest law. Kitties are doing well. Fat and happy babies. All four of us. :) Sorry its been a while since the last update. One of my first role models was Professor Charles Weigel. Professor Weigel passed away this week. We will miss you so much, Professor. We were extremely blessed to have had the opportunity to learn from him.

I was Professor's research assistant. We developed the Child Abuse Nurse Examiner Program together. He was more than a mentor or professor though, he was like an all-knowing, all-caring, all-accepting of faults, grandfather. In our time together, he taught me that the legal profession can be the noblest and most influential calling. He showed me that the greatest lawyers are still the most humble people.

He read me this poem when we were working in the office. He said he believes that it describes attorneys.

These, in the day when heaven was falling,
The hour when earth’s foundations fled,
Followed their mercenary calling
And took their wages and are dead.

Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
They stood, and earth’s foundation stay;
What God abandoned, These defended,
And saved the sum of things for pay.

– A.E. Housman

I too believe that these words describe attorneys. Attorneys who are called into service for others, who hold up the sky for them. The responsibility is great, and the reward is given according to a non-traditional scale. But how awesome is it that the world relies on our strength of spirit, of character, and of mind to hold up the sky. This poem describes Professor Weigel.

Thank you professor for teaching me this and for so many other things. We loved you very much.
<img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/23850268-116363662089580486?l=foggybottom3.blogspot.com'
